Troubleshooting: Volume always turns itself up! - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Folks, I hate to admit it and I nearly have to cry writing this: Since a few days, my shiny HTC ONE automatically turns its volume to the maximum by itself. I clean my HTC ONE about every two days and hope that nothing happened to the volume rockers while carefully cleaning my phone with love and a small amount of santizer. How do I know that this behavior is not caused by the AOKP 4.4.2 system running on it? Well, when in bootloader, same thing happens. I just have to turn my phone slightly to the right and then the blue bar in the menu moves up all the way.
Dafuk, what happened to my awesome phone? Is it uncalibrated, are my volume rockers stuck? What to do now?

same issue here. but I found it 1 month ago. This issue happened because of app installed. Mine was happened when I installed Tango. So if you install it you should uninstall Tango and test it again.

I don't have an app named "Tango". @tamimifarokh, did you have the same issues like I had in the bootloader, too?

No I haven't this. maybe volume button problem. check that

Send it in to HTC... had the same problem with the power button. Sometimes it got random input.. even in bootloader. I got a shiny new HTC One. Everything was back to Stock except S OFF.

@LibertyMarine, thanks for your hint. I hate this, but it currently seems like the only solution right now.
There are two concerns that I have: First, I rooted my HTC ONE via HTC DEV. If they recognize that, I might have to pay a huge amount of money. And second, what if I get back a REPAIRED phone with a new motherboard? It'll highly likely be unrootable..

they WILL recognize it! But they can't prove that you actually used the unlock_token binary file! You can follow this guide (I think, based on your thanks meter and so on, that you know how it actually works, but saying too much in that case isn't a bad thing). I did everything except the S ON part. And they replaced it the first time and the second time... right now,... I don't know if they accept it too... but if they didn't I will fight for my rights. And in the warranty statement is written that the warranty is void only if the issue is CAUSED by modification. And on HTCdev they also write this MAY void your warranty! But things that aren't written in the warranty statement, you didn't accept. You bought the phone and accepted only to the statement that was with your phone in the same box!
And a unrootable HTC One because of a new motherboard? I didn't here about that. I only know from people that got a new motherboard and that they also rooted it again succesfully.

Well, not unrootable, but extremely difficult - happened to me when my friend wanted to root his repaired HTC EVO 3D.
I'll probably give this replacement a shot. How long did it take you to get back your new phone, @LibertyMarine?

That's annoying. I hope this won't happen to you too!
I am from Switzerland and I gave it to the shop where I bought it from(Microspot) and they sent it to an official HTC Repair Center and I gave it to them on a saturday and got it back 12 days later. They said it needs generally 2 weeks.
I hope you can do something with these informations and if they want to charge you - or even to be prepared - I have a few examples how you can convince HTC that this issue is not caused by you and that this is covered by warranty.

UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER DOESN'T VOID THE WARRANTY FOR HARDWARE SUCH AS THE POWERBUTTON!!! I think it's point 7 in the warranty statement where they wrote that the fault has to be CAUSED by this particular ---- whatever is listed below.

Someone had an issue with a sunk powerbutton, like me:
LibertyMarine said:
Now, send them an email and tell them that in the warranty is written:
ONLY if it's CAUSED by external action, warranty is void for ONLY the part that got influenced by this cause! And also tell them that it is ridiculous and that they can't be serious saying that a few scratches and a unlocked bootloader caused a sunk power button! Tell them that this is against every human logic! Tell them that you have the right to use this warranty because the powerbutton sunk under normal usage! And this is definitly a production problem and not your fault! Describe them that you use your phone the way it has to be used!
But remember, be friendly and try to comunicate.. otherwise they won't deal.

LibertyMarine said:
Try to give them your perspective.. how you experienced the sunk powerbutton. I said that from time to time it sunk deeper and deeper. And because I was afraid of destroying something I even pressed it softer and so on.. But once the point was reached that this ESSENTIAL part of the HTC One was unusable, so I felt forced to send it in on warranty because this is definitly a hardware fault and not a user fault! Try to give them your perspective!
This is almost everything. Be rethoric(Ask questions so that they must answer Yes! Ask questions that already include the answer) For example, Isn't it ridiculus and totally against every logic thinking that you say a unlocked bootloader is the cause of a sunk powerbutton?
As long as they are humans, they have to say, yes... this is the only answer... otherwise they would be ridiculus.

holy crap, say them they HAVE to, or are they willing to see a BIG article in a popular newspaper with your problem and their answer... ask the shop assistant if he wants his name to be published etc... Hey @LibertyMarine, here's the strange thing: To make sure that it really is an issue with the heardware, I downgraded my firmware and reflashed my ROM. Same thing happened. Then, the same night, I upgraded back to the firmware I had before. And while the issue still persisted (tested it again), I went asleep. The next morning, my volume rockers worked correctly again!
To everyone reading this thread, here's what I expect what happened: While carefully cleaning my phone, a very small drop of santizer might have entered the spaces where the volume rockers sit. I expect that it took a while until it vaporized. everyone should take a look at how to properly clean the HTC ONE. I hope that my volume rockers continue to work as they should, I would hate to be without my shiny new HTC ONE and receiving a REFURBISHED ONE after sending it in. Generally, I don't like refurbished stuff. Yeah, call me old-fashioned, but I prefer to know that the stuff I bought has never been touched or tampered with. For now: THANK YOU for baring with me and responding to this thread - I'll be back if volume rockers go crazy again.

HTC TYTN II Warranty return

Hello people... I read all the stuff here and I start to:
1. install Hard SPL 3.56 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396922 all went ok
2. I've proceed to Security Unlock from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=361236 all went ok
3. I flash Dutty's rom and latest radio - all went ok
with a minor problem 3G HSDPA and Video Call stopped working. I read from the net that many people had this problem and the way to resolve is to send back to warranty (the phone worked with 3g until I flash and unlock him).
4. I read and proceed like here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335568 but phone show on three screen HardSPL 3.56
Now I download the original rom from here http://www.htc.com/www/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=13&cat=2&dl_id=21 and flash him, I proceed to relock from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=361236 all went ok, but in the three screen I have : KAIS130 on first line, SPL-3.28.0000 in the second and CPLD-8 in the last line.
My question is: CAN I SEND HIM NOW FOR WARRANY RETURN NOW ?

honestly, i dont think they care what the spl is as lng as the rom is the default rom. ive sent mine back for warranty by just flashing the stock at&t rom and they didnt even check the spl
This should have been posted under the existing thread for returning devices to their original state for warranty.
Short answer: Yes.
Thank you for your answer. Tomorrow I'll send the HTC TYTN II to the warranty return.
Not to sound funny...but I would smash it. lol I know it sounds like I'm being a smart ass, but I would.
Or what I have been told to, from someone tha works in an AT&T store.
"Just tell them you dropped it in a lake and you dont have it to return it."
Just make sure you have the phone turned off when you do that. They send a test out to that phone.

This is what I was told by a customer service representative of AT&T.
Please read before you quote and call someone out.
Zaf - you are fine you can take your phone back - best luck
mbarvian - hello ... some technicians are weirdos they dont look at SPL but some of them they particularly look for changes in its properties i was in my agnet last saturday and apparently all technicians now must validate ROM and SPL before taking the repair request! they just look for a reason to void our warranties... so it is recommended we revert our spls before going to agnets

Hey man... take it easy. I'm not trying to offend anyone here. You need to be a little more comical when suggesting someone drop their phone in water in order to facilitate getting a replacement device.
Now, speaking as someone who has been through 15+ warranty exchanges with AT&T/Cingular over the last 3 years, I'm gonna have to call BS on your original statement. One of the first things a representative asks you on the phone is: "Take a look under the battery. Is there a pink strip anywhere in the area?"
Here in romania they not change or repair your phone if you drop it, lose, steal, make underwater photos or whaever other stuuf like that.
They change or repair if you have problems without harm him.

lol Its cool bro. My B for going off. I thought i was putting a bit of comical spin on it. But the interwebs doesn't convey that very well.
Oh, and dude, thats a LOT of phones in 3 years. lol. I swear on my life the guy at the store told me to just tell them that its at the bottom of a lake and make sure the phone is tuned off. This way you dont have to turn in the phone. The reason the guy told me this is because I wanted to get a new battery for my smt5600 and it was going to cost more than the phone itself. Thats what they told me to do. So I dunno.
Anyway, im cool. I have no beef with you....that is unless you're going to bring some mashed potatoes and gravy...Oh, and tell me about this 'pink strip'. I've never heard of such a thing...llol I even pulled my battery to see if there was something there. Is it to tell if the phone go wet or somethng?

There is a white strip under the battery of all AT&T phones. It turns pink if exposed to water/moisture. The reps will try to trick people into admitting there is a pink strip because they don't mention that it's normally white. I always cut them off and say "no the phone has not gotten wet", before they can even finish the question.
Do you carry insurance on your phones? If so, then it doesn't matter what happens to it, they'll still replace it.

I will most likely send my phone back with a changed spl. My micro usb pin must be damaged since it will no longer be recognized by computers. There is no real way to revert back to normal, just the stock rom... and then reflash and take the battery out half way. I am hoping someone can verify this is no problem in the U.S. ? Thanks

thanks you for your rapid ask, but i sure , exist a solution for the brick.
my phoneis not guaranteed because I bought it used
SNIFFF
There's no current solution for a brick. A brick is a brick and you're done. Sorry
I had the same issued as you are having i was also stuck on the t-mobile logo screen because of the radio update, and yes my phone got brick. but since i had insurance on the phone i took it to my local t-mobile made up some excuse that my phone stop working and they gave me a brand new one in store for free. gotta love the extra at 5 dollars you pay for insurance saved me from buying a new one lol.
Yup, you've got a brick. Most common brick actually, downgrading radio 9/10 times seems to leed to a brick. Currently there are no working fixes. There are rumors that either a serial->USB cable might help fix a brick or wiring up a jtag setup. There's info about both on the interwebs but neither has been proven to work on the dream yet afaik.
Here is my question. What were you doing before the brick happened? By chance did you install the special spl?

How is it bad advice? Hardware problems are covered by warranty, software are not. the brick is a SOFTWARE problem. T-Mobile does not give replacement g1s that are screwed up because of something you installed that wasn't issued by T-Mobile themself. If you tell them you dropped it , its a HARDWARE problem and they provide replacements...

Telling them you dropped the phone and it no longer boots is your problem and they will say so. "Was it working before you dropped it?" Yes it was "Then it soulds like when "YOU" dropped the phone you messed it up" Hope you have the phone insurance that's the only way you are most likely going to get a new one but it's going to cost you.
While it's a software problem if you drop the phone and break it they do not have to replace it.

simple The OTA got to you for cupcake and you went to install it when the phone rebooted it was stuck at the G1 screen. they will walk you through a few steps and confirm it's messed up. At that point they will send you out a replacement. You do not have to say anything about it being rooted. I just did this for my friends moms phone. He messed it up I called and got her a replacement sent. Now if you are not a T-mo customer you are out of luck though which sucks :/
Hell I had to do this for 2 phones. 1 G1 and 1 Shadow this past week (both phones were modded by me/friend) Shadow was a true hardware issue though and not the mods fault though.
just tell them your phone wont boot up if you cant get to recovery or android screen neither can they on your phone so they will never know what u did to it

Lol okay then. Still think that if you report a hardware issue like you broke it, T-Mobile will still replace it as long as you still have the 1 year warranty that came with it. Like Cyanogen's issue where his touchscreen was messedup. HARDWAREE issue and T-Mobile replaced it

I work for T-mobile and telling them you broke the hardware on the phone is NOT covered under warranty. The manufacture's warranty only covers phone defects not people dropping their phone. A touch screen going out is an example of hardware covered under warranty. Software is covered under warranty as well and all you have to say is the phone won't boot past the G1 screen. Thats all you have to say.
All right. I rest my case then O mighty T-Mobile worker. No sarcasm haha.
Yeah its true, you do have to be careful if you plan on using the warranty route if its not totally legit, but then I suppose it differs depending on region. Over here in the UK it covers quite a few things like accidental dropping of the mobile, water damage etc. Which reminds me, I need to add my mobile to my monthly insurance policy...
The insurance isn't really worth it =/ Even if you claim it you still have to pay 130$ here in NY
Blimey... I pay £6/m (thanks to my credit card policies) instead of the usual £9/m that covers the mobile phone over accidental damage, theft, water damage, software damage etc. However if I do make a claim I think its £30-£40 for a replacement G1.
HELP! Is my g1 bricked?
After reading a few other thread I believe my g1 is bricked.
I was trying to install Superhero G3. After installing the radio provided in this thread:
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f56/official-hero-g3-build-rom-18471/
My phone hung at the T-Mobile g1 boot logo.
I can't get into recovery or anything.
I bought the phone from craigslist, so I don't have a warranty or anything. My parents would kill me if they found out I have to buy myself a new phone.
PLEASE I hope there is something I can do to fix this.

Help.. Bricked G1 (HTC Dream)

ok, to make it easier to explain, I made a video. Sorry for talking so low.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypQBEARaw9E
I recorded that with my G1, the "broken" G1 is my brothers.
We have a serious problem, we cannot exchange it, we bought it last week and since we bought it has been having problems. We were going to take it to the store and then yesterday morning, it was like that, it was working "fine" at night. The problem is that we took it to the store, and the "dot" behind the battery is red, which "means" it got wet... but it didn't, I'm not going to lie, it didn't get wet my brother has taken care of that phone more than anything, it still has all the plastic protectors, even if the phone was acting really weird...
Ok ok, to the point. It doesn't do anything, as you saw in the video, when you press the power button the buttons flash until I depress it, and then they just stay on. The same happens when I try going into recovery, or bootloader modes, nothing... I decided to leave it like that for a few hours, nothing.
Either the device is bricked, the screen is damaged, or the whole device is screwed.... What do you guys think??
Thanks in advance.

It could very well be all 3. Did you guys get this from T-Mobile?
The dot in the battery compartment of my phone is red (well, orange I supposed) and my phone has never been wet and is working fine. I'd argue the case if I were you.

Dave

Yes we did get it directly from a (official) T-Mobile store (not a 3rd party retailer).. we went there and they complained about the phone "getting wet"... the phone looks perfect and never gotten wet.

I am going to argue, I already started arguing by calling tmobile directly but they *****ed about why didnt i take the phone within the 14-day warranty if it was giving me issues and waited for this to happen....... they couldn't do anything, whatever, I'm going to try to take this further because, just like you, I can assure you my phone hasn't gotten wet.
Can you help me an send me a picture of your phone? So I could have some proof, my own phone's dot is white, and some other phones from friends/family are also white...
Thanks!
I've heard stories of that indicator turning red/pink when people have left the phone in the bathroom while showering... supposedly a lot of steam can turn it red.

Yeah they told me about this, and I actually *****ed my brother about this but he doesn't do this, I do, and my phone is fine. Anyways, he told me he just leaves the phone charging in the room while he showers...
So I had to get a new one by claiming the insurance ($130 deductible.....) there was no win for me here...... the only thing was that I was able to keep the damaged phone.
I called HTC to try and figure out how much it would be to fix it. The lady that answered the phone said the symptoms were like those of a bad motherboard, and she said it'd cost me around $475 to fix it, wait, what??.....
So, know, idk what to do with this crap. I might try to repair it.
Thanks anyways guys!

Ah, right. Tell you what... since I'm volunteering my time to trace the circuit and my phone works perfectly, there is nothing for me to gain out of this, so I'm not the one to be asking for money.
If you can't afford it yourself, might be a community thing, but hold off for a while, there is someone else I've been communicating with privately who may be sending a bricked board, if it works out, then I won't need yours.
Ill volunteer a bricked board

Find a broken G1 on eBay or CG and try repairing it yourself. Might run you under $100 to do this and it's probably a great learning experience...not to mention you could end up with another working G1.

Thanks, and yeah I was already looking into one, found one locally with a broken screen this guy might be giving it to me for like 30 bucks so that'd be great. I have the tools and everything, Ive fixed phones, including iPhones, and also HW unlock on iPhones when there was that moment were SW unlock was not possible and I did like 2 HW unlocks... ok too much talk
Thanks anyways to every one, If I can't fix this I'd definately consider sending the MB to lbcoder
My ebay board just arrive! i hope to fix my phone tomorrow.
Shoulda just swap the stickers and got the warranty replacement.

[Q] HTC ONE lost camera focus

Hi!
I am using HTC ONE about 10 days. No drops, no hits against walls or anything. 5 minutes ago wanted to take a picture and suddenly focus went "offline"
Camera makes that noise when you are focusing, but nothing happens. I rebooted phone, but nothing changed.
Am I the first one with this problem?
Solutions?
Thanks!
edit: factory reset did not help
I think the problem is optical image stabilization which is/are jammed. I don't hear that "click" sound when starting camera app. That click sound means that IS started to work.
sorry for my bad grammar. Not my native language.

Hi Please see my post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2288668&page=3
same problem...This might be big issue
I think my problem is different. After night I realized that if I don't use ONE for several hours than focus works for ~5 sec. I start Camera app and can focus one time. When camera focus then image stays sharp for like 5 sec and then goes all blur. And after that focus is not working and I'm back to where I started. So everythink works for like 5 sec and then all goes wrong. After some hours I can focus one more time and again - all stops after some seconds. First time I see something like that.
I've got the same problem. I honestly think the only solution is to exchange for a new phone.
try change iso manually

I had the same problem and tried to play with the Iso settings, and i change it manually on 200,and it worked for me,now it focuses on a landscape photo just well.in the indoors,i let iso automatic and it focuses fine,i guess is a software issue, and they'll solved it with the next update
throw the phone very hard onto your bed. that should unjam the sensor
Got the same problem. Got worse over time. Now it won't focus at all.
There's no other way than send it to repair. Hope I don't get problems with the unlocked bootloader...

Yes, the phone is gonna go to htc Germany Hope they fix it. As long as there is no S-off, I have no other chance than hope.
I already have been anxiously following the S-off announcement ("very soon "). But time goes by and there is no s-off yet
Well, let's keep fingers crossed.

Well I sent it too from germany (o2), repairing company is Arvato. Arvato declines repairing when bootloader is open...
Well, I had long discussions with HTC because here in Switzerland HTC only offers three days of DOA, while Samsung, Apple, Nokia and other all have 14 days.
I noticed the camera problem (which got worse over time) on the 5th day, so out of DOA. I finally got them to accept to exchange the phone on DOA terms. So, the phone probably goes to HTC directly, hopefully not to some repair company.
But considering your case: Germany has much more consumer friendly laws than Switzerland. I am pretty sure, the seller needs to prove (!) that you are responsible for the defect within the first 6 months. Otherwise be must repair the phone. I think an unlocked bootloader is no proof that you have damaged the camera. I would talk with them and tell them that they must abide to the law. It should be must easier than here in Switzerland.

people scoff at this, but when my focus gets jammed I give it a sharp whack on the back and then it focuses again. Doesn't work every time but there is nothing else to do.

I can confirm this still happens some times above 90% battery, I think this is unrelated
hello i have the same problem
after i dropped my phone camera cannot focus on far objects then 15cm.
object further then 15 cm are blurry.
factory reset didnt help.
Same issue! I've posted a bit about it in Page 10 of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45010584
Does anyone with a Google Play Edition ROM have this issue? A user of XDA suggested that it is possibly only affecting AOSP ROM users.
I spoke to someone at HTC here in the UK and he basically said that they have NO grounds to refuse to repair it under warranty if the fault you return it for is not caused by something you have done, either damage or by unlocking and flashing. I think they are out of order to charge you to repair a phone that is faulty when you unlocking the bootloader has nothing to do with the fault.
I just sent mine back because the shots were all blurred unless doing macros. I had the same issue as a previous poster aswell, the click when you open the camera only happened about once every dozen or so times I opened it, even then the shots were still blurred. I sent it back with a relocked bootloader, stock ROM and tampered flag still present and they have repaired mine and I'm awaiting its return from UPS.

When you find out what was fixed can you let us know? And if it actually fixed the issue?
Just been reading this as I have the same problem. No close focus for me, but far focus was ok-ish. Gave it a few slaps on my thigh and it seems to be more or less ok again for normal focus conditions, although anything under 30cm distance isn't going to focus at all. It's been driving me mad for weeks now.

Hi! Am living in Germany as well. Could you get any answer from HTC service?

[Q] Wife's Vivid decided to die today.

Wife and I got a pair of Vivids in June of 2012, mine is rooted, has CM10 on it, her's is 100% bone stock.
Since this morning, it will not boot. When you go to turn it on, the screen's backlight comes on for 2-3 seconds, then off for a second, and a quick blink of the backlight and nothing. Then it starts a quick (.25-.50 second long) vibrate every 19 seconds. I've tried the battery from mine, same deal.
I'm not eligible for upgrade until June 2014, so if anyone has an ideas on what could be wrong or how to fix it, I'd greatly appreciate it.
If anything, I'd like to be able to get the data off it... pics and videos... for some reason she had no SD card in here and dropbox filled up back in April. Wish she'd told me that happened.
Thanks!
Apparently Vivid charging ports are fragile. Possible that hers has a short? Broken piece lodged in there causing the power to be wonky? I'd take a look with a good magnifying glass. Replacement part on eBay for about $6 if it is broken.

I'll see what I can find out. The kids have a couple of those toy microscope things, just need to get a battery so the light will work.
I plugged it into the computer without the battery and Windows wanted to install some driver qhsusb_dload? but googling that makes me think the phone is bricked in some way, which is odd because I never messed with hers.

Is there a way to definitively determine this? I'd hate to pay someone for this, just to find out it wasn't the problem.
Also, will this retain the data on the phone? I'm really aggravated at myself for not realizing there wasn't a MicroSD card in there, and more aggravated at my wife for not noticing the "Hey dropbox is full" notifications on the phone since APRIL. She's aggravated because all the pics and the video of the kids since April could potentially be gone. Good times for all.
Thanks!
You can try the Unbricking project...
dexter93's thread in development...
You need Linux... And there is no guarantee...
Iirc you only need a live CD... And don't need it installed...

The very same thing happened to mine mid summer. Here is the story from my experience. Sent to HTC for repair. They would NOT give an estimate up front. They wanted $210 to repair it. Told them no. Sent it for JTAG service. RIFF box could not talk to it. Replaced the phone.
I would send it for JTAG service. Especially if it is still showing some signs of life. Look on EBAY for jtag servive by nto1566. $25 if he can fix it. Money refunded if he can't. All you are out is postage.

Sorry if it was stock rom and suddenly dead, it is hardware issue, not bricked by corrupted boot loader or software issue.

Boot on recovery?
Hello friend!
I want to ask if you tried to charge the phone until green LED in upper left corner?, Then if you tried to put it into boot mode by pressing volume down and then press on? if you can load into boot mode, which is a white screen, you can scroll with the volume key down to "Factory Reset" and pressing the button on. Maybe the phone is restarted but surely erase all data are stored.
If you decide to JATG, the same will happen
Decisions, I hope you serve what I recommend, if so please let me know in the post, OK
If you plug it in to charge it either does nothing, or the orange "charging" light will come on for a few seconds and go out.
