What options are there for making NANDroid backups? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since late November of last year my N900A has been running stock OS (Android 4.3) but is rooted via RDLV and soon after did the OTA update to MJ5.
I would like to start experimenting with Xposed modules but I would like to make a complete backup of my device just in case something goes wrong. Since our bootloader is still locked and and we cannot install Clockworkmod Recovery or TeamWin Recovery Project, what are my other options?
Thank you in advance.

Do you know if this is useful for stock ROM? Let's say I'm playing around with risky apps, before I use them, I could make a backup with Safestrap?
I'm a little confused about with all the custom ROM speak in the developers thread

Because the backup I just made (I went ahead and installed Safestrap, made a backup) is stored in the same place as the sytem, and if my phone were to become corrupt, that backup would no longer be available?
Thanks for the reply, just straightening this out in my head so I understand it better

If I wanted to then I could find that backup file, store it on my computer, and if it ever comes down to needing it, go out and buy an external and go from there? I assume Safestrap needs to be installed on the external sdcard, or just the backup file?
Thanks again for your help

First things first do not under any circumstances run the 2.1 ruu. Are you still using the stock 1.5 radio?

okay I am guessing that you said yes to using the stock radio. So this is easy do you still got your original recovery image and your original nandroid? Just go into recovery and nandoid back to stock 1.5 then reboot and download flashrec and rename your original recovery image to recovery-backup and place on your sd card. Install flashrec and either reboot or open it and press restore backup image

Right on the root of your sdcard. And you may know but others might not but the root of the sdcard is just on the sdcard but not inside any folders.

Currently, as said above, you must use Root Keeper from the market to preserve root. Just download it and make a backup now so that whenever the OTA eventually comes, you'll be ready. There is an updated kernel and baseband in the leaked 5.7.894 and the camera is better.

Thanks for the response. When you make a backup with Root Keeper, what do you do after accepting the new OTA when it's released? Simply restore the backup after accepting the OTA?

Yup! Open the app and hit restore root. I made a copy of the root backup file on my SD card in case the OTA were to wipe it. I could easily move it back onto the root of the phone and change the permissions and owner.

The only issues I've had with it are that if you create a Nand backup with su-backup (the root backup) on the root of the phone, that Nand will fail to restore. You can easily, from the app, remove su-backup boot into recovery and make the Nand, then reboot the phone and re-backup root. I hope this makes sense.

[Q] System Version 139.15.1 won't OTA

I have a Moto X developer edition and I've been trying to OTA update to 139.15.1 but my phone fails with the error code 410. I found the Flashable zip and so I'm going to install it with that but for future installs how do I do it with the OTA. The phone failed both while rooted and while running a stock nandroid I made before rooting. With the stock nandroid the only thing modified was the unlocked bootloader. Yes I am using the stock recovery. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

there are threads out there already describing how to take the ota on a dev phone. But pure curiosity here, how in the hell are you making nandroid backups with stock recovery? I had noidea stock recovery allowed you to make those backups. I thought that was the point of other recoveries.

It isn't possible to make a nandroid backup with a stock recovery. I meant I reflashed the stock recovery after making the backup. Anyway it is possible to make a backup that includes your stock recovery by using the fastboot boot command to boot to a recovery over usb rather than flashing it to your recovery partition.

interesting. Still wouldn't expect the OTA to work if you booted that way though. The OTA would be checking the files on the phone not the files from the usb that are running the phone. I wouldn't think. But I could be really confused on what you just said. Either way, there are several threads on the matter that should adequately answer all your needs.

Yes it would appear you are confused on what I just said. Anyway I guess I'll browse around to find instructions on how to take an OTA for the next time there's an OTA released.

i get what you were saying now. I thought you were saying that you were booting your phone from a usb drive that had the stock recovery on it so you could see if the OTA would take on your phone. Anyway, I dont' remember all of the steps that people were taking but it was pretty simplistic.

i have deleted my OS and now im stuck with cynemod(witch i hate) can anyone post a link for images when avaiable or extract a system.img from the phone.
Many thanks

Ill do a TWRP backup first thing and share but not sure it will work in other devices.

How about a quick "how-to" for the rest of us. TWRP, root etc. if used, or at least how you went about flashing the stock ?

according to a search in Google its not possible to be retail and have a demo because its 2 different ROMS.
you can use TWRP to wipe everything Data, Dalvik and System.
Then use the backup.
This are tips so please use at your own risk.

dont know what to say to that, however, you can try this:
http://repo.xposed.info/
install framework (use flash mode) and look for module BootManager. You can choose witch apps will run at system start. Disable demo app.

Depends on which TWRP you are using.
The one from suhas.holla seems to have some problems while adrianom claims to have fixed it.
just use this one - https://drive.google.com/folder/d/0B0AbMwIJ-N7xM25CdjlQOUl2Qlk/edit
It's the previous version. This one is relatively bugless except it only backs up to external sd
