As a previous owner of Samsung's Captivate, and Infuse I have had plenty of experience of how bad GPS can get.
Also having owned the Note 1 and Note 2 I was able to realize just how AWESOME GPS/GLONASS can be! My S2 was somewhere in between.
With EACH of the previous 5 AT&T devices I always left WI-FI assistance OFF for better accuracy with at times down to single digits of feet using a purchased app called GPS TEST PLUS.
Enter my two day old Note 3. It sees more than twenty satellites like my earlier Notes, but doesn't use nearly as many. GPS on Note 3 also seems to go to sleep in less than a couple minutes whereas all 5 earlier Galaxies didn't.
Google Maps starts to hone in and gets within several yards and then jumps a mile or so away before coming close again.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled gps app. Cleared/renewed agps data.
Full factory reset also without any improvement.
Accurate GPS is critical to me for marine navigation using Navionics app a couple of weeks each year on rental boats in FL Keys. Last spring we broke down and I sent owner an edited screen shot for him to come tow us.

Yes, I have noticed the same thing. Not sure what do about. I have also noticed that my signal quality is really lower than it used to be on Galaxy Note 2, as well.

Considering return within 14 days. Not acceptable for me especially if custom ROMs won't be available to improve upon.
Have not compared GN 1,2,& 3 FCC diagrams to see if GPS antenna was moved.

I also have the same issue. I explained this to an att store that the gps is half as good as it was on my s4 or note 2. Lock on in maps kept going in and out and when i drove, my arrow would be driving over houses. All they said was they can't do anything because they can see anything wrong. While maps is open it locks on but accuracy keeps fading in and out. Again i said well it's more noticeable when driving. He said that i should take a photo of it happening... and that Gps accuracy is normal within 100 feet. I looked at him in disgust and repeated "normal within 100 feet?". I basically lost my sh*t immediately after that grabbed my phone out of his hand and walked out. I have no idea what to do.

Same issue with my Note 3. Very inaccurate GPS. I have sent mine for repairs and if they can't solve it I will not keep it.

YEAP .mine does the same thing. Hear we go again with a galaxy and a gps ! Note 2 was flawless and this issue makes me miss that phone

I exchanged my pre ordered unit. It is stronger/better, but still not up to note 1 and 2 standards.

That's exactly what I would like to know, because I have a similar issue. For me, using google maps works great until it suddenly says "GPS Signal Lost" and stops working. If I turn off GPS and turn it back on, it gets a fix again pretty quickly, but this shouldn't happen so often. It happens at least once every time I use maps, and often it will happen multiple times.
I have the "GPS Essentials" app so I ran it alongside google maps and checked it when the signal got lost. The satellites basically went from a count of about 17 down to 0 and then started adding themselves back.
I was going to exchange my phone for an exact replacement tomorrow. But if this is a software issue or an issue effecting the hardware on all phones, then it doesn't make sense to exchange it. I'd really like to pinpoint the issue exactly. Has anyone managed to get rid of this issue completely?
Someone should try exctracting a old version of maps from a note 2 or note 1 rom, uncheck auto update in the play store and see if the older version of maps is any better or if it will even work. I'll give it a try.
I just exchanged my phone today for a new one because of the GPS issues I was having. I used google maps navigation twice since and didn't hear "GPS signal lost" once. Seems like my new one doesn't have the GPS problem, but it may be too soon to tell. It could just be that a significant portion of the Note 3's out there have buggy GPS chips and my new one has a good one.
Another thought I had was maybe it has something to do with software we all have installed. Did everyone who had this problem root their phones? My old phone was rooted with Root De La Vega. I also froze AT&T navigation. I'm hoping the problem doesn't return when I root the new phone and install all my apps, but we shall see.
Having mobile data "on" helped me improve the GPS signal on my Note 3
Thanks for posting your experiences.
My phone has been on repairs twice with no improvement. I will go back to the store tomorrow and give them one more chance to solve the issues before returning it permanently.
I love the phone in every possible way except for the poor gps. It looses the fix constantly even in places where the sky is clear and reception should be perfect.
Below is an example of note 3 vs S4 running the "GPS Status & Toolbox" app. Worth noting is that the Note 3 had been searching for a fix for 20 minutes while the S4 was booted up just seconds prior to the photo:
i43.tinypic.com/2a7781g.jpg (copy paste in browser)
Both phones having the same settings enabled (wifi, gps) and swapping their positions did nothing to improve the situation. 1 minute after the photo was taken the S4 was down to 3m accuracy. Note 3 never goes below 10.

I had the same issue, except I would lose the GPS signal every time I plugged the phone in. I would have a good signal then plug it in and it would drop the GPS. Even the GPS icon would disappear. I took it to the ATT store and they exchanged it. I don't have that issue anymore, although my compass app seems way and useless.

So that's more evidence that the hardware may be to blame... unless you had a profile manager or something that launched conflicting software when the phone was plugged in. Seems like poor QA on the GPS chips to me.
About your compass issue, I think you have to rotate the phone at least twice around each axis to get that to calibrate. Although that may be just with certain apps.
So I installed maps apk from a note 1 rom so I'll give it a try and report back if it is any better. Its a long shot but worth a try.

Just an update...
I rooted my phone again and installed all my apps, and my GPS still works perfectly. So basically my software stack is the exact same as it was when I had issues, but now the hardware is all new. This tells me the software is not to blame, and the GPS issue is most likely caused by a crappy GPS chip with poor quality control.
A word of advice: If you have GPS issues in your Note 3 and you're still within the 2 week window AT&T gives you for returning the phone, exchange it for a new one. It seems to have fixed my problem.

I was a pre-order (received it on the 4th) so I'm well past the 2 week window. I didn't really use the GPS until after I rooted with the initial Root De La Vega (MI1 FW). Then I noticed just terrible GPS performance (jumping around, poor refresh, losing lock, etc.) I re-rooted using the MI9 FW, and my GPS performance improved dramatically. My compass is still terrible. But I can navigate with Gmaps without always jumping to different streets. Just my experience.

For what it's worth, I rooted with MI9 on both phones. The first one had the GPS issues and the 2nd works perfectly.
So im not sure if this affects 4.4 4.4.1 4.4.2 or all of them. However i did not notice this UNTIL 4.4.2. It could of possibly been happening with 4.4 but i dont think so.
Ive had this happen twice this week, atleast that ive noticed. And the situation has been the same. I will have service, and then i will jump on wifi and end up walking into a no service area. After im done in the no service area, i will kill wifi and walk back to an area that i have coverage. The walk to and from both locations the coverage is spotty. However when i get back to the area where i have full coverage the status bar indicates i have bars, however if you look at the tiles, it shows NO SERVICE, but WITH BARS. I dont know if i actually have service or not. But either way its a graphical glitch.

Glad to know im not the only one. Question is, do we really have service when it says that, or do we actually have service. I forget to physically test it. I hope we actually still have service and just the NO SERVICE text is the glitch.

I spend my precious time trying to get page views on a internet forum? Are you kidding me?
A phone showing you that you have service when you may not isn't a major bug? Youre joking right? I guess when your car shows that your gas tank is full when its really about to hit empty isn't anything to be worried about either.
its not an issue, thats how its supposed to be. notice how it shows the service bars in orange? that means that no data is flowing even though theres a connection. when data starts flowing, they turn white.

I dont think that's the issue. Orange dictates no connection to Google services which may or not be down to the fact that there's no service.
However, regardless of this, H + bars should not co exist with "No Service" on a regular basis.
No service should mean no voice, no data, no bars

I've had this problem for a while. My signal bars will show full even when I have no signal. Have to toggle airplane mode on and off to get it resolved.
I'd say it was a major bug. Thinking you have signal when you've got none is bad ESPECIALLY for a phone.
Its intermittent. Sometimes I can go days with no problems and then I'll have it three times in 1 day. Very annoying.

Sorry to say this but your analogy is incorrect. With the volume you'd have a constant reminder by the music playing to tell you what the volume is. And same for adjusting it up and down as well.
The problem the OP is describing is having a car that's showing you've got a full tank only to have it cut out on you on the motorway on Christmas day leaving you stranded in the countryside while someone else eats your Christmas dinner.
In case it wasn't already obvious. It cut out because the car had no fuel but the fuel gauge was faulty.
PS just to clarify, on the main status bar my signal bars will be full. However when I click on the notification and click on settings. My signal bars will show NO SIGNAL. This doesn't happy all the time and I know exactly what the orange bars mean.
Me and the OP are talking about the status bar showing full signal when in actual effect you have none.

I know bars are just a graphical representation. But when i glance down at my phone i always look at them to make sure i have active service. I could care less how much. But the liking of seeing bars, or reading straight dB numbers is pointless if what its telling you is a lie.

but more to that, when i turn wifi off, i have the same thing for a few seconds, meaning that the switch from wifi to cell is not as instantaneous as you think it should be. i will still see the H+ or LTE for a few seconds before the icon turns white again. that is normal as far as i can tell.
Its literally done this for 3 or 4 Android versions, ever since they introduced the quick toggles. Its not an issue at all. The toggle just lags behind a bit in updating in certain situations. Its not like data isn't actually working. Its just a bit of a graphical glitch.

This has happened on my phone since day 1. My experience is that it does not have any actually service at all. First thing I tried when I saw this was airplane mode, then airplane mode off. No bars, no signal, nothing. Turn it off and on, same. It fixes after a few minutes. Even if you don't turn on/off airplane, it is still no signal. I is cause I'll get emails from 3 or 4 different accounts at the same time, where my tablet has already received them.
I've only seen it happen in my house, so I figured lte was the suck in my house.

Not trying to offend anyone with my post, but I was simply pointing out that an icon that doesn't update quickly/properly in the quick settings panel isn't a major bug. Now if you tell me that in settings/phone status your phone is showing you have signal - say -100dbm - and you actually don't have service - well, even then I would only call that a mild or moderate bug. But an icon (in one location) that isn't accurate isn't going to run me out of fuel and have someone eat my Christmas dinner (seriously that stuff made me chuckle a bit). I didn't have a cellular device 15 years ago and I was eating my own food TYVM . --But even if someone showed up at my place and ate my plate of food, shouldn't I get in the car and go to the next house? :silly:
@samagon- turning airplane mode on and off turns off the radios and it's completely normal for the phone to delay a few minutes before getting any reception. Not getting emails could be that the phone isn't syncing as often (among other variables).
And I believe the car analogy should have been-
You have a car. You turn the key and it tells you it's running, but the engine isn't making any noise and the car doesn't go anywhere.
The fuel analogy IMO would likely reference the battery not reporting the correct amount of charge (fuel) remaining.
I just upgraded from Note 2 to Note 3. My push notifications (for gmail, hangouts and facebook chats) are delayed by 15 mins to upto 2 hours in some cases. I never had this issue with Note 2 (4.1.2 stock), I always used to get notifications instantly. Now with note 3, I receive all notifications with delay and all of them come at the same time after the delay.
I created a text file and I logged my wifi connection using tasker. Wifi doesnt get disconnected, its always connected. My wifi sleep policy is to have wifi always on. I know I have steady wifi connection cause I am using it with other devices.
This occurs only when the phone is idling. If I am actively using it, it works fine. But this is really pain cause whenever someone sends me "instant message" I usually get it after an hour even though I am in full wifi coverage (60Mbps)
Anyone else experienced this problem with their android devices lately? Know of any solution?

I had this happen like one time and never looked into the cause of it. It never reoccurred so I just kind of shrugged it off. That's really bizarre...
Just got a note 3 a week ago and all my push notifications (whatsapp, facebook, etc) are delayed when the screen is closed. When it is opened, it delays less.
I tried using the PNF app to change the heartbeat (the non rooted version), messed with all the configurations on the wifi (it happens with wifi on or off).
Still happening after 2 weeks!! No one else having the same issue?

I have same problem. Took back my first note 3 thinking it was defective and the new one doing samething. Frustrating.im thinking I'm gonna have to go to different phone sadly
I got the same problem. I have a European version. Sent it back to Samsung but they couldn't find something... Did anyone found a solution yet? Because it's really frustrating.
As of late, I have been running into similar issues, though they don't seem to on a permanent basis (sometimes I get notified within seconds or minutes, sometimes it takes a few hours or until I unlock my device).
My phone is a german version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 running the Samsung stock Android version 4.4.2
One of the possible causes for this upon which I stumbled during my search for a solution was that the push connection might time out once in a while and take up to half an hour to be reestablished due to the long heartbeat interval set in stock Android.
But since the interval should be between 15 minutes (WiFi) and 28 minutes (3G) as stated in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142503, this would not account for notifications being delayed by several hours or even not to arrive at all while the screen is turned off.
Does anybody know whether Samsung stock might be implementing some kind of additional sleep mode which might prevent the connection from being reestablished by heartbeat monitoring and maybe even how to turn this 'feature' off without root (last thing I heard, rooting a Note 3 might trigger an e-fuse used as additional security measure for Samsung KNOX, but also allowing them to entirely refuse hardware warranty on rooted devices)?
Thanks!
I sent it back 2 times now, but still no solution. I also want to try a custom rom to see if that fixes it, but I'm also afraid that I lose my warranty if I root my device. If anybody can confirm that the stock rom is the problem, you'd help me a ton!

I do face this problem on my note3. I already do hard reset few time but still delay on my whatsapp and yahoo mail. Im using Note 3 LTE running Kitkat 4.4.2
I guess no one has a solution for this yet?
The problem is not app specific. The delay in notification happens all across the board. When my phone is sleeping, i dont get any notification. As soon as I wake it up, all notification come at the same time, including Yahoo mail, Gmail, hangout messages, whatsapp, Google voice, twitter and others.
It seems like the wifi/data is disabled when phone is sleeping. I double checked in the Advanced Wifi option that wifi is always on.

It most likely only happens if the provider (your router for wifi, your carrier for 3G/4G) closes a connection after a certain amount of time goes by that it's not used. The heartbeat (the phone sends out a message on the connection every x minutes) keeps the connection open. Either 4.4.2 doesn't send the heartbeat any longer (it's not really part of Android, so there's no guarantee that Google will keep it when they update Android), or the provider of those people seeing the problem has a shorter timeout than the 15 minutes(wifi)/28 minutes (3G/4G) that the phone uses. PNF allows you to shorten the heartbeat time. 5 minutes is usually short enough to work for any connection, but you can shorten it more if you need to. (It won't use more battery - sending a keep-alive message takes a lot less battery than reestablishing the connection.)

Do you have power saving on? Cos for me I had it on all the time and as soon as I turned it off it solved the issue! Maybe give it go

I'm having the same problem on GALAXY DUOS 2...
its very irritating, if you got solution plz tell me..:highfive:
I had 2 VZW Moto Xs and they rocked. About 10 days ago I switched to TMO Moto Xs and the GPS loses lock on both of them. Much like the first set, they get lock very quickly, but both the TMO units acted strangely during nav and when I installed GPS Status I see that the GPS gets lock, the coordinates are displayed, then about 10 sec later it searches for lock again, the coordinates aren't returned, and then it relocks.
This causes a real usability issue when it comes to navigation. If it was one of these I'd think I had a dud, but the VZW units worked fine and the TMO units both have this bug.
Has anyone seen similar issues?

I use gps daily and i've only come across an issue with it 2x when i went to New York City. basically, it was putting my location all over the map, as if it couldnt find me. Im guessing the high rise buildings had something to do with it.
as far as gps losing lock, I have notice that as well. I never toggle it off and yet I have to turn it maybe once/twice a month
The lock problem I have is pretty continuous, and restarting doesn't seem to help. Wondering I'd there was a bad run somehow.

I also encountered this issue.
I reset the phone and it went back normal; however, it occasionally still acts weird. I'm on tmobile as well.
Hope someone can figure this out

For those of you seeing this issue, when it pops up, go into settings > location and see if you see LocationServices listed twice... One with a size of 120k, and the other 136k.

Not yet... but it seems out of place.
My history with GPS "not quite working" was about it being extremely hit and miss about detecting me driving. When this would happen, I'd notice problems with Maps as well.
After a factory reset, it all worked fine. But as soon as I reinstalled Yelp, the issue returned. I'm not certain that yelp is the culprit as in hindsight, I really didn't confirm proper operation after the reset for a long enough period of time given the intermittent nature of the problem.
Next step is to try and determine if two of these same processes is normal, and if not, which one doesn't belong, and where it's coming from. There is a thread in the Moto forums I started. One person there who sees only one occurrence of the process stated his is 120k in size. One of my posts also has a list of all my third party apps that use location services. It would be helpful to know which apps are in common with folks having this issue. The thread is at:

So you are saying this can be software issue? I have a T-Mobile Moto X and I use the phone mostly for Navigation and this is driving me crazy. I am thinking that my phone is defective and been on the phone for 30+ min trying to get support.
I have the same issue

I went ahead and posted my situation to https://forums.motorola.com/posts/8a2bf78f04?commentId=755612#755612. There are no apps in common with all three devices (yours, mine, my wife's). The quest continues.
I must add that I also had this problem on my previous phones, Note 2 and Galaxy Mega 6.3. The problem started around the past summer.

I confirm that I force stop the 120 k location service file, and the problem is gone. Need to do that again after a reset though.

When you say 'reset', do you mean reset or just rebooting your phone?
BTW, I have no LocationServices on my Nexus 4, so these seem to be Moto's binaries, which makes sense.
Would appreciate you keeping us posted if this continues to address the issue and causes no additional problems.

I mean rebooting the phone. I use Waze everyday for commuting. I will report back if this fix doesn't work.
In terms of side effects, I have not seen any yet.

I see both, and if I stop one, I get no better GPS lock.
I've been getting g terrible GPS lock recently and also posted a thread.

I have the same problem. XT1053 on T-Mobile constantly loses GPS signal while driving. Happens in wide open areas with no buildings. I have tried wiping the device and not installing any additional apps and have the same results. I can be sitting at a traffic light have GPS signal, lose it for a few seconds then get it back without having moved.
Here is a poorly shot video of this happening. I will try and get something more clear tomorrow.

I returned my phone for this issue yesterday. I had navigation issues along with the drive assist problem. While driving maps world just stop. If I was at a turn and turned left the map would stay stuck at the turn long after I turned. It eventually would catch up. Loosing and gaining lock would perfectly explain this.
Update: I got a replacement phone. The new phone has the same problems. May be a bit worse.

Been chasing this one for a while and still think this isn't hardware related (lots of Nexus 5 users seeing this on KK as well).
My latest theory, which I have yet to disprove, is that the GPS data downloaded from some cell towers (this is the A in AGPS) is either wrong, or is somehow getting corrupted.
When this happens to me, turning on airplane mode immediately restores a quick and persistent lock. And using GPS Status to reset/erase the AGPS data returns normal operation... for a while.
It's like the initial fix info is fighting with the actual GPS readings. As soon as you turn off the cell towers, or clear the data they are providing, all is well.
I am in T-Mobile fringe area and see it fairly often. So far it has always cleared up by trying the above.
This is am interesting theory. I will check it out a bit. Most interesting is the idea that the agps data structure may be slightly different for kitkat v ICS, and that it may also be different for TMO. The main idea supporting this (though purely anecdotal) is that it does happen on both my tmo Xs but neither of my VZW Xs.

I got my original Note 4 last Sunday. Since I use GPS navigation quite often, it is always one of the first things I check out when getting a new device. I found that it didn't hold a lock for long, it takes a long time to get a lock again, and when it does lock it's not accurate at all. I got an exchange today, and the same exact thing is happening with my new unit. A friend told me this would be the best place to come for help. She mentioned that rooting and custom romming might be the fix. I haven't rooted since my MyTouch 4G, and I've never used a rom. Can I get some help with that?
Also, I've tried waze instead of Google maps and that didn't help. And yes, high accuracy is turned on.
Thanks in advance!
Bump - any advice? On a different forum, someone mentioned downloading a GPS fix app from the Play Store. I did that, and I'll check it out on the way home from work. But ultimately I'd like a device with strong GPS natively. I'll try to exchange it one more time. I find it really weird that I'm the only one that seems to be having these problems!

Yes, on both devices.
Are you the same penguin from the a/c forums?
Sorry to hear you're still having gps issues with your replacement phone. Silly question, but is high accuracy mode selected in the location settings? Is wifi enabled?
Have you tried installing GPS Status? How many satellites can you lock onto?

Yep, I'm the very same penguin . High accuracy mode is indeed enabled. I haven't tried it with wifi enabled, I usually disable it when I leave home to conserve battery life. I'll try keeping it enabled on my commute home tonight. I've installed GPS status and it locks on to like 13ish out of 20ish satellites (it fluctuates a bit) when I'm stationary so that's not a problem. I haven't tried seeing how many lock on when I'm driving since I don't want to fiddle with my phone that much when I'm on the road. I'm still trying to get one more replacement before my 14 days are up, but the day is approaching quickly, and none of the 7 or 8 stores in my immediate area ever have any in stock! I call every other day and I'm sure I'm driving the reps crazy lol.
I've had this same issue with my first Note 4 on TMo but replaced it last week and havent had any issues besides very occasionally having a slight hang after making a turn and the GPS not registering it for a few hundred feet.
On my first note 4 it would CONSTANTLY lose GPS signal and be wildly inaccurate (not recognizing my turns or the proper facing direction) but hopefully *knock on wood* its been fixed with my new phone. I know you've already exchanged it but...
If you find a fix, please post it here just in case
I had the same problem with the GPS, it was working only on wifi but not with the phone data. But after a full flash it is working fine again. Also, it was very laggy since the first day.
I had a thread around here for similar GPS issue.
I actually got a PM from someone called SamsungSupport.
Anyway I think this is a compass calibration issue.
I installed the GPS Status app and recalibrated the compass.
The next time I used it (yesterday), I didn't have any issues.
I don't know if it has resolved the problem and I'll keep monitoring it whenever I use GPS.
I got my second replacement yesterday, and it's even worse than my initial replacement!! It's as bad as my first device.
I chatted t-mo customer care today and they were of no help. They kept advising me to do the same troubleshooting issues I've already done. Then, I chatted Samsung care and the rep was A LOT more helpful than the previous Samsung rep I spoke with. Samsung has a remote app that you can download from the Play Store, and the Samsung rep can remote into your device and see what you're seeing. We couldn't do much at the time since I'm at work, but I'm set to chat them back right before I leave work. They're going to remote in with me and actually see the issue that I'm having while driving. HOPEFULLY a fix will come out of all this!!
Bump. I'm on my FOURTH replacement now, same issues. What is going on?? So far, I've:
Recalibrated the compass
Tightened the screws underneath the battery door (they seemed pretty tight anyway)
Samsung support reps haven't been able to work with me using the Smart Tutor (remote into my phone to see/manipulate what's on my screen) app. They always disconnect the session before I get on the road, or maybe the session just drops.
Factory resets
Clearing the cache
I got my firmware reflashed at a Samsung kiosk at Best Buy
Make sure high accuracy mode is enabled (these days I never take it off since I'm always fiddling with my GPS)
Tried a number of gps fix apps in the play store
They want me to send in the phone for repair, but I have this nagging feeling that they're going to turn it on, see that gps can indeed get a lock, and send it back. Plus, there's no guarantee that T-Mobile will have a smartphone loaner phone, since they say that those phones keep disappearing because there's only a $50 deposit, so people just take the phones (this is why we can't have nice things). Since no one else is reporting these issues, it's doubtful that Samsung is working on a software fix for it. I'm really REALLY enjoying this phone otherwise, but I NEED gps to work!!
Samsung Note 4 Issue with Waze
I just upgraded from the Note 3 to the Note 4 two days ago and I have the same issue. It took me a few hours but I figured what they have done. They have program the Note 4 for totally hands free driving and if you want to use a GPS program it will be the one they have. You have to activate CAR MODE and you will see and hear your Waze in the background come on line and start to work correctly. Then if you close their program quickly, you will see Waze running correctly for about 5 seconds and the go back to acting up without GPS signal. The GPS signal with high accuracy is tied to the CAR MODE.
TMOBILE will never offer a smartphone loaner as per policy. GPS works fine not sure what ur doing
