MotoMaker - Which carrier? - Moto X Q&A

Hello, I hardbricked my previous Moto X and Motorola is exchanging it. They gave me a redemption code so I can customize a new Moto X and get it for free. My previous one was with Verizon with a 2 year contract. I haven't paid Verizon anything and haven't activated the previous Moto X for them neither. Should I get the Unlocked GSM Moto X from Moto Maker? Or should I get Verizon again since I did get the previous one with a 2 year contract? I'm asking because I dont want Verizon to charge me the $350 for leaving contract. Or will they?
I do plan on rooting

If you're on Verizon, your only choice is either the Verizon one or the Verizon Developer Edition.

Since I never activated the phone before return/exchange, will I still be paying monthly for Verizon? They don't have my phone's IMEI or ESN or anything.

If you have an active plan with them right now, yeah. They don't care if your phone is working or not. They're still gonna charge you. If you're a new customer and you don't want to use their service, call and cancel and tell them you're returning the phone to Motorola (or listen for their instructions).

I called Verizon and they said that there's no account in their system because I never activated service. They still will charge?

I'm so confused. You bought the phone but didn't sign a contract? Then you have nothing to worry about. If you don't want to use Verizon, return it to Motorola and call it a day. After that you can order any model you want (if they let you).

If you're a new customer or just signed a new contract, it sounds like you're within the period to return the phone and cancel. Just ask them what they need.

[Q] Cannot activate Moto X

How can I get my phone activated? I ordered the 32gb Moto X on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013. Had to go to at&t store a get the card. Got the Navy Blue back and Black front. With black accents. I also order an extra skip, earphones, clear snap case, and car charger. The phone status said it will get here by Sept. 4, 2013. Got to shipping emails yesterday about accessories. But today, FedEx brings accessories and phone. Could not activate. Then I went to at&t store. The At&t guy could not activate. He calls at&t support and they could not do any thing. Told me they would open a case, sent me a text that is should be resolved by Sept. 9th 2013. I'm thinking that I have a 14 day window to return the phone. Call Motorola, after being switch around from one dept to another, they get someone in activation. After about 40 minutes on the phone, she talks to her supervisor, still could not activate. Told me she would see what she could do and call me tomorrow. This is strange. They could not locate my IMEI or Serial number in their system. The phone even has my "Power On" name I picked out. Any one else have this problem? BTW, the at&t people here are now thrilled working with these moto x phones.

I went to activate online and the IMEI number they had listed for me didn't match the one I had on my new phone so I had to call. For some reason it took a little while. They asked me if I had done a "cross upgrade" I said no, was put on hold a few minutes and when the lady came back to the phone it was done.
I think I was on the phone with AT&T about 20 minutes.
We have to "activate" it? I can't just pop in a SIM and be done with it? Ugh... So much for using this on Aio.

sadly the Moto X uses nano Sim. I imagine people coming from an iPhone 5 or a Nokia 1020 will be fine.
Everything else is micro sim.
Why they didn't activate the sim at the factory is a mystery.
It took me 2 hours on the phone and an hour in the store to get mine working. They did no training with their phone support for the moto x

At&t employees do not seem that interested in selling the motto x. I do not know why Motorola gave at&t the exclusive for Moto Maker. Just about all their employees in the retail store use Iphone. It should be at&apple. If Motorola or Google send a "shopper" to a retail store from at&apple, they will see why the sales will soon dry up for the moto x from at&t_appple.

Possibly because you can't have 2 sims related to the same number and I doubt many people would want to go phoneless for 4 days as a requirement.

AT&T sales people are the worst and have no idea what they're talking about most times because they just get the specs and told what to sell more of. I'm pretty sure ATT wanted the exclusive to try and get away from AT&Apple sterostype

This is easy to fix. Ask your carrier this question: "May I please have a nano sim? Thanks!"

Everyone,
I recently purchased the MOTO X as part of a new ATT plan, but want to be able to move my phone number over in order to avoid any convenience. I am told that it has to be done in store and then I was told that it had to be done over the phone. Noone knows how the hell to set this system up, but has anyone else had a similar experience with PORTING their phone over as well as the overall upgrade process or have they just been terrible in general.

That is too simplistic for at&t apple. They do not have the same nano sims here at this at&t store. They got an email in their updates that the new sims will come next week.
Well, today call Motorola. Nothing happened on their part. Asked for a RMA, he gives me an at&t number. The rep on the phone tried to activate it. Said the sim card has been activated. I had another sims card from at&t store yesterday. It had been activated also. So, she will overnight me(supposedly) sim I can use. When I got off work today, I decided to stop by the at&t store. One on the managers was helping me and the he said something about getting a memo that the nano sims the had was not the right kind. Suppose to be a little smaller. They will get some next week. Just don't know whet to believe. I inquired when my 14 day return windows starts? The day the phone ships was the answer. That was Tuesday. With the Labor Day Weekend coming, look like a week will pass before I can even use the phone. Then just one week to decide if I want to keep it. THIS IS CRAZY.
I had to spend about an hour on the phone to activate my X. The rep (an exceedingly patient young man) eventually pinpointed the problem with the grandfathered 2 GB data plan. Once he was finally able to activate, I had to reboot it before it worked, but once I did so, it has worked just fine. Not sure if this will assist anyone else, but thought it worth mentioning. :fingers-crossed:

Sorry to here about your story. I would have returned it also. I'm getting my Moto X today and hope I don't have any issues. I'm coming from tmobile and if there are problems activating the phone or they tell me I have to go to the AT&T store, I'll just return the phone, and stay with tmobile.

[Q] Off contract still has carrier branding?

Do all off contract moto xs still have carrier branding? I dont find it pointless but why have the carrier branding when you specifically bought off contract to be away from the carrier for a reason. Its not as big of a deal as say on other devices like an lg g2 but i still would like to not have verizon on my phone. Anyway to not have it?
My understanding is that only the T Mobile version is provided without carrier branding.
And sprint.
And Rogers
Sent from my Moto X cell phone telephone...
I understand if I buy a phone, in store, off the shelf that it'll have the carrier branding. But with Motomaker, there is no reason to have it on a custom one when you buy it out right.

I am with you 100%. I just bought my Moto X last night under the impression that it's not locked to any carrier. And that it's unlocked. However, I find out this morning after talking to customer support that the phone is locked to AT&T. I thought high of Motorola before but they are flat out liars. When they posted the promotion on their website for Cyber Monday, it clearly said "Unlocked Moto X" phone for $349; discounted $150 for Cyber Monday.
The number of phones sold off contract is so insignificant that the cost to change the production to not print on them probably wouldn't be worth the added cost. Sure, for phones like the Developer Edition that can only be purchased off-contract, I could see an argument, but they aren't going to change their product for 1% of their sales.
somebody posted a pic of the VZW dev. edition with the VZW logo AND the Dev. edition printing remved from the back of the phone. IIRC, the buyer scraped it off with a scissors.
I may do the same to the VZW logo on my DE.
So no way a sprint moto x would work on verizon would it? Both CDMA and sprint is bootloader unlocked and therefore could you flash vzw dev edition roms on it? i really dont want that verizon logo haha
It was posted 349 off contract for any carrier. There was no sign of saying it's unlocked. U must have read it wrong.

I think what really annoys me too is that when im buying off contract im expecting it not to be carrier tied or i would have boughten it ON contract. So for verizon i personally just dont want that bloat wear or any of that junk. Guess theres no option?
I hate to be that guy, but... Does it really matter? I don't care for Verizon's logo either, but it doesn't look horrible. It's subtle.

[Q] Moto X for $1 and Keep Unlimited Data?

Okay so a local Verizon authorized retailer is selling 16GB Moto X for $1 for new customers and for existing Verizon customers who are upgrade ready. I asked the guy if there were any catches, how it works with Verizon and all with future upgrades, he said there's no strings, they just upgrade through Verizon and I purchase the device from him instead of Verizon.
So... can someone tell me if this plan will NOT work?
1. Family member is eligible for upgrade, already has 2GB data plan. Go into store and upgrade to Moto X for $1 and extend Verizon contract for 2 years.
2. On Verizon account, swap family member's new Moto X and my device (Galaxy Nexus, unlimited data still).
3. Buy Developer Edition Moto X from Motorola off contract at $550
4. Active Developer Edition Moto X on my account.
5. Sell the $1 Moto X on Swappa or like
All of this so I could get a Dev Edition Moto X and keep unlimited data for only about $201 assuming I can sell the 16GB $1 Moto X for maybe $350. Family member gets upgraded from Droid X to my Galaxy Nexus. Come March of this year, move my upgrade to family member's account if they don't like my Galaxy Nexus.
I called Verizon, the rep assured me there's no difference in buying and renewing contract at retailer versus at Verizon.
It seems like a bargain... what am I missing?
If you are using a family member's upgrade to receive the Moto X for $1 through the retailer, then yes, this will work. It's exactly like doing a buddy upgrade swap directly through Verizon. It is suggested that you activate the Moto X on your family member's line first, before you swap the device over to your line though, just to make sure Verizon processes the device upgrade on their line.
Yes, on our family plan, one of the lines is eligible for a discounted upgrade. So I'd go with them to store, upgrade/active the $1 Moto X, then maybe a day later login to Verizon account, swap phones with that line so now I have the Moto X and they have my Galaxy Nexus. Then I'd buy a developer edition Moto X at full price. Once it arrives, active it on my line. Then sell the original $1 Moto X on Swappa or somewhere to recoup costs on the Developer Edition Moto X I purchased. Then, if needed, I could also give my upgrade (coming in March) to the other line I used to get the Moto X for $1 in case they aren't happy with my old Galaxy Nexus, but probably won't be an issue, they're coming from a Droid X on 3G.
So I should be safe and fair game right?
just make sure you activate the phone on the # you got the upgrade for BEFORE you put it on the unlimited plan. i just did it with verizon. used my dads upgrade, activated on his #, went to verizon and then moved it to my unlimited plan.

Make sure this retailer doesn't have "charge backs" meaning they charge your credit card the full retail price of the phone if you take it off your account. I used to work at a retailer and this was something I was in charge of doing, seeing where we lost commission.

Ooh, okay, see that's good to know. So you're saying I'd probably be safe if after upgrading I swapped, but if I sell it and it shows up on another different Verizon account, there's a chance that they would then they bill you for the phone afterwards?
Doesn't seem right, if they're selling the device for $1.... Do retailers have the ability to track MEID numbers for this? Or do they just hit up Verizon all the time to check if phones have changed accounts?
How would I find out if they have charge backs?
After some reading, it sounds like you'd only get a chargeback if the line you upgraded on is cancelled, as in you sign up with Verizon, 2 years later you're eligible for upgrade, walk into retailer, upgrade line, then close VZW account and run off with device. Which is dumb anyway cause you'd have to pay the ETF, unless I guess you're planning to sell your contract and port your number over to a different service. So if I'm just upgrading the line, swapping phones, activating a new device on my line, upgraded line is still active, and sell the $1 moto x....
I assume I'd be fine then? as long as whoever I sell the moto X to doesn't cancel their contract??? Or as long as the line that was upgraded is still "on" then it wouldn't matter?
I found a post on HowardForums, google search howard forums chargebacks and it's the first link from about 2010, can't post links yet that talks about this.
Anything else someone can think of? I'm kinda out of ideas.
Just one note: If the upgrade line that you have coming up in March is the unlimited data line, you CANNOT ever use that upgrade, including transferring it to another line, AND keep unlimited data. When you transfer the upgrade you are effectively renewing the contract and they won't do that with the grandfathered unlimited data lines.
So if your friend/family member is not happy with the Nex, you won't be able to get a new phone for them with that upgrade. That is what I've been told at Verizon and read on this forum. If someone else has different info, please post, I'd love to be wrong!

you can transfer upgrade to and from an unlimited line without loosing unlimited. you just cannot upgrade on the unlimited line.
Ooh, that's good to know, or at least something to watch out for. So come March when I'm eligible, it sounds like if I want to transfer my upgrade to the line I used to get the moto x, there's a change I'd lose unlimited data? Doesn't seem like I should, but maybe. I'd think it'd just renew my account for another 2, give them the upgrade, but... then how does that work? If line 1 just upgraded to moto x therefore renewing for another 2, what happens when I transfer my upgrade in march? can they just not use it for 2 years still? or is it a "free pass" to get two discounted devices in a row on that line?
Just make sure he doesn't do a straight cross upgrade. He needs to do a regular upgrade on the line with 2 gigs then an equipment change to put it onto your line. An alternate/cross upgrade will kill your unlimited data and Verizon will not give it back

Thanks! I plan to just do a regular upgrade with the one line that already has a 2GB/mo plan. Activate it there in the store and then leave. I'll do the swapping myself via the Verizon page where you enter the MEID numbers and junk, that way Best Buy doesn't mess anything up. That should work right?
Then simply purchase the dev edition, activate it on my account, then sell off the Best Buy moto x to recoupe costs.

I just had to call Verizon to unlock my account and happened to ask the guy about swapping phones on the website after upgrading the one line, he said not to do that because it treats swapping phones like that as somehow upgrading both? So instead the guy told me to call Verizon back after just upgrading the one line to swap devices and they'd guarantee I don't lose unlimited data. Hmm...

You will need to buy another nano Sim then. When you deactivate it then put it on your line it will burn the nanosim in the phone itself and won't be able to be used again.

Well, I did the deed. Went into the store and upgraded the other line to the moto x for $1, had the guy activate it and that was it. About an hour and a half later, I called Verizon and we spent about half hour on the phone swapping phones. Moto x is now on my line with its warranty and Gnex is transferred to the just updated line, 2GB data plan and I'm still on unlimited data. No new sims, no fuss, just a half hour conversation with a nice lady telling me about her warm fur coat while waiting for the phones to swap... Purchased my dev edition moto x already... all that's left is to activate it once it's here, then sell off the 16gb moto x as well as this old Droid X that was left behind in the process.
Best part was when they told me the device was $49.99 and the $1 sale was over and I told them well the sign says $1... they had forgotten to take down a sign at a dedicated Moto X display... win.
So far I'm loving my Developer Edition Moto X! Ordered it and it arrived 2 days later. Successfully have transferred all the phones around and still have my unlimited data plan. Now I just need to sell off the non-developer moto x as well as an old Droid X to recoup costs! Thanks for the input from everyone!
Thanks everyone for the help. I'm a few weeks in now and everything worked out great. Much appreciated! Hopefully this helps others in the same boat unless Verizon changes their policies.
Did you sell the Dev edition?

[Q] Help with nexus 6 (several questions) (tmobile to Verizon)

After attempting to buy from 3 retail tmobile stores (who wouldn't sell me the phone without a plan) I ordered my nexus 6 via the phone. Several retail workers and customer support agents on the phone have told me I need to keep service on my phone for 45days to get the unlock code from them. Currently awaiting delivery (back ordered )
What happens if I don't wait for the unlock code And I just insert my Verizon sim?
The tmobile nexus 6 is suppousedly the same as the Unlocked GP nexus 6, so what exactly is unlocked?
I'm coming from a note 4 (my note 4 lags a lot more than everyone else and I can't take it anymore, couldn't figure out the cause)
will the nexus 6 have multi windows at all?
Also how do you use the notifications on this (I played with a 2013 moto x, is it the same?)
Sorry for all the question and thanks in advance for any help.
I just bought the phone from T-Mobile with their cheapest plan Wednesday and I'm canceling them today. From what I've been Reading I shouldn't have to pay anything for the plan. I haven't used it at all and just popped my Verizon Sim card right away.

Thank you, you pretty much saved me 45 days of phone bill payment.
Im assuming if i dont activate the tmobile sim, i can cancel/not have any charges.
I prev had the z1s with them for like a month and canceled due to their poor customer service , surprised they let me sign up again. (Then again theyre the ones who wanted me to sign up, i just wanted to buy the phone outright and use it on my unlimted data verizon line)
T-Mo Nexus 6 on VZW
OK, so I see that the T-Mo Nexus 6 works fine on VZW, however I see that all of you said you bought it outright, how about buying subsidized? Will it work if on VZW then, since the phone is getting activated, will it lock it to work only on T-Mo? Thanks for the help in advanced!

As stated above T-Mobile doesn't sim lock phones.... They also don't subsidize phones because they are the "uncarrier" so it will work if you pop the Verizon sim in assuming you have a bank sim ready to go.
As what others have said, T-Mobile doesn't lock the phones.
AT&T and Sprint are on a different story, AT&T I've heard locked their phones via carrier.
Sprint doesn't lock their phones but some people have reported buying them from Amazon have carrier locked so be careful on that.
T-Mobile will however make you stay with them for one month (I believe) before you can cancel. If you cancel, your EIP balance is due. If you pay outright, you'll still have to stick with them for a month. At least thats my understanding of it.
U.S. Cellular also sells the phone now but I'm not sure about their policy.
I just bought a white 64gb off swappa, anything in particular to check for? (My tmobile one is backordered).
Pretty sure i overpayed, but as long as the phone is like new i'll be happy.

Check the imei of course to see if it has been reported stolen etc or if the user has paid off the financing if it is financed.

Wow.... I would have definitely waited a bit longer than pay that much for a phone.
Theres availability, you just need to stick around for them. Have a auto refresh script that alerts you when its available. They randomly add them in stock.

Ive tried that, they always sell out after its in my cart. Motorola had alot of stock earlier of the 32gbs, but i need 64 (currently have 32gb phone + 64gb card at about 75% full)

I just bought the phone from T-Mobile with their cheapest plan Wednesday and I'm canceling them today. From what I've been Reading I shouldn't have to pay anything for the plan. I haven't used it at all and just popped my Verizon Sim card right away.

Glad I caught this thread. Few questions to get clarification:
Assuming I buy the N6 from T-Mobile (subsidized or not) - what is their cancellation policy? Someone mentioned 45 day scenario where you can cancel without penalty? Is that true?
Thanks!

They dont do contracts. Just dont activate their sim and call them up saying you want to cancel.
If youre looking for a 32g id recomend buying off motorola.

[Q] if i buy Droid Turbo by paying full price, will that be factory unlocked?

if i purchase the phone from official verzon store or site, paying the full price of 600 usd for the 32 gb version..will the phone be factory unlocked? and will indian 3g sim work on it?
It will be locked.
I believe all Verizon phones are Factory Unlocked for GSM, so you should be fine, unless this phone is different for some reason.
It comes unlocked out of the box. There are plenty of reports right in this forum of people using it on other networks .
I believe it's required for any LTE phone that has c band on it to be unlocked per the FCC.
Now, whether the phone has the bands to work on Indian network or not is a different matter.

All I know is that you can't buy a Verizon phone without activating or associating a verizon line with it. As far as global usage that's something Verizon allows.

That is only true if buying directly from Verizon.
You will get a pre-installed Verizon Sim card.
So you can unlock the phone with it
Canadian here. Purchased Droid Turbo off the Verizon website and have been using my Fido sim card in it with zero issues. Comes fully unlocked.
Verizon no longer lock their Global LTE smart phones(at least the latest ones). You can pop any sim in them and you will have service after manually entering some APNs for data..
If you go into a Verizon store or order online from VZW you will be forced to get a individual plan for $60 a month. All you have to do is purchase the device, wait 14 and cancel the contract. After that you can keep the device and cancel the contract with no ETFs.
Or you can buy one off eBay or Swappa and not worry about the hassle of dealing with Verizon. And you might save some $$

Correct. Verizon phones are sold on craigslist all the time. But you cannot walk into a verizon store and buy one of their phones without a plan or activating it with a new plan.

That is not true at all. Any verizon retail store, "not corporate" will sell out right. I've bought quite a few devices off contract in my local area. I believe it's only the corporate stores that hold that standard.

If you are willing to purchase the device outright, you should be able to purchase it at a VZW corporate store as well. I am certain of this because that is what I did - paid full price out of pocket. Just offering information...
