thanks
Yea, saw that also on YouTube. Definitely not 1080 although no means to check..

Most likely it's 720p(it was discussed many times before)-
720p extreme quality is also limitation of Google Cast 14.123.1.4 for Chrome
720p extreme quality setting = Video bitrate 4000-5000 + Audio bitrate 128
720p high quality setting = Video bitrate 2000-2500 + Audio bitrate 128
480p standard quality setting = Video bitrate 750-1500 + Audio bitrate 128

Correct.
Tab casting is limited because of the fact that it's doing real-time compression of the screen. For the gamers, it's like running FRAPS except you're streaming rather than saving to disk.

Is your TV set to tell you your resolution? I.e. My Samsung will say 1920x1080 or 1280x720. Don't do much tab casting so I gotta say I've been pretty pleased that the Chromecast seems to always be pumping out 1080p and my receiver on Netflix stuff always lights up the Dolby Digital+ icon.

Netflix has example movies that show the current resolution and bitrate. My CC certainly streams 1080p from Netflix @ 5800 kbps

Hey guys,
I was thinking about buying a Nook color but I had one question.
Will the Nook Color be able to play 720p mkv files? With subtitles? I noticed that the archos 70 can play 720p mkv files and It seems to me the cpu is similar in both units.
I am pretty uninformed about this topic so I was hoping if anyone could enlighten me? I did not want false expectations that one day someone will be able to get it to work on the Nook Color.
Btw I know that Nook Color can not play it natively, but since the archos 70 I was wondering if the Nook Color could 2 in the future?
Thanks for your help!
is there an app?
At the moment, I don't believe the nook will play .mkv files without rooting it. I haven't rooted mine yet (waiting to see if 2.2 really does come out next month and what changes it brings, first) so can't say if there is an app that will play them.
I would think that it could, as long as the necessary app is installed and the codecs are available. The hardware seems like it would be perfectly capable of playing a 720p file, no matter the format, it would just be squished down to the correct resolution of 600 (or smaller depending on ratio).
Don't know about 720p, but as long as the video and audio streams are something the NC recognizes it should play an MKV (h.264, mp4 for video, aac or mp3 for audio). Although I had much better luck with just straight up mp4 files.
The built in player only even showed subtitles if they were hardcoded to the video.
i can play 720p mp4 files just fine with no lag what so ever.. Quality is awesome.. Rock Player doesn't like MKVs or AVIs, it will play them just really really slow..

Are you using the stock player or Rock Player?
rock player plays mkv's fine on my evo but i cant get it to activate on my nook
mvideo player plays mkv 720p anime with subtitles that i have on my samsung captivate. (although it seems you have to start the video from beginning to end (ie: can't skip around) or the audio will get out of sync)
wondering if you download android market and get mvideo player if mkv 720p subtitles will work on nook color as well.
if so i would be interested in the ereader/tablet
Why? The root takes approximitly 15 to 20 minutes. Is practically completly automated, and improves the device 500%.

I loaded up a 800mb standard def AVI and it played fine in rockplayer. Bit of stutter at the start but it smooths right out after about 10 seconds. Just FYI

Nook Color can only play these video formats: 3GP, 3G2, MP4, M4V, and OGG. And supports MPEG-4 Simple Profile up to 854×480, H.263 up to 352×288, and H.264 Baseline profile up to 854×480. So if u want to enjoy video on Nook Color, u should convert video to Nook Color compatible formats. I suggest u a powerful video converter called Foxreal Video Converter, which enables convert all video formats to Nook Color with the optimized video format (MP4, 854×480, H.264 codec, 1500kbps avg bitrate, AAC 48KHz 160Kbps) to give user the best visual enjoyment.
U can try it, hopefully it can help u.

You can download an app from market and then you can watch rmvb on Nook Color. So, your post is not 100% accurate.
There are a couple apps vplayer and rockplayer that can play just about every format on armv7l (our cpu)
More importantly I heard the ffree and awesome VLC player is coming to android VERY soon, that will be the best for the NC for sure
I have tried half a dozen video apps and have been unable to play 720p mkv.
720p youtube vids don't work
I tried downloading 720p and 1080p videos from youtube with tubemate and they wouldn't play. They'd skip and stutter - totally unwatchable.
Also just tried playing a 180meg 720p AVI of the office in VPlayer. The video plays fluidly but the audio is completely out of sync.

I'm afraid 720p and 1080p are out of the question.
What's the point of 720p on a 480p device? Do you just not want to convert your video files?
Sent from my Nook Color.
Vplayer works better than rockplayer. Plays mkv. Ratings are bad because developer said application would always be free than started to charge for it. Paid version is highly rated

Because the nook's screen is 600 pixels so 720 would be the smallest "standard" size that doesn't have to be up-converted.
I play mkv files on my HTC Desire - Rockplayer and others all stuttered and displayed a blocky effect.
Then I installed Vital Player (neon) and they all player wonderfully - even 70p ones! For some reason it struggles with 720p mp4 files but who uses those?
The chip that handles video on the NC wants to play video smaller than 854x480.
Any video larger than that will not go through the hardware accelerator.
I have a thread where I attached a handbrake preset for the NC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992214
If you use that preset, you have to set the video size yourself (defaults to original size)
Use the original size if it is smaller than 854x480. If it is larger (like 720p would be) then set it to 854 width with "Keep Aspect Ratio" and the video file that handbrake puts out will be nook hardware accelerated.
Also, MoboPlayer is much better than the alternatives as far as the player itself goes.

I read entire thread but I really want to know why archos 70 or 101 (with same GPU!) manages to play 720p hardware accelerated.
Is there any way to improve the video playback quality?
I'm a heavy user of Voddler (a swedish Netflix) and Plex (video streaming from computer). When I watch the movies I have a little problem with the quality. Small blocks appear on the screen during playback. Is there anyway to make them disapear?
Or maybe it's just my Wifi connection too slow?
But this also appear when I play videos from the SDcard. These clips are in 720p, but the phone should manage to play them better, right?
Hope you can help me!
Best Regards
Jimmy
Try MX Player to play videos. and of course WiFi bandwidth matters for Quality video playback.
Those spot depends upon the bandwidth you are using and stored videos depends upon the bitrate which used to decode the video. Try to use more than 3mbps bitrate videos and higher bandwidth for streaming.. You won't see blocks in these setup.
For example YouTube video (This one for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d61FPSXnTLc ) has 1080p 720p 480p.....
I know on my laptop I could barely stream 720p smooth, let alone 1080p, but most of the time I am at 480p. For some reason the Youtube on automatic default to the 480p or lower, even though I could play with 720p with minimal hiccup.
So when I cast to Chromecast, it is always smooth (so I pretty much know that it is pulling the 720p stream or lower). Is there a way to know which stream it is pulling?
I could always force it to play the 1080p stream by feeding it the direct URL to http://googlecast.github.io/cast-chrome/ but I want to know what it is pulling naturally.

Its probably just like the Android app. It'll pull what it is being allowed to pull down due to the bandwidth.
The reason you and I and most people have YouTube issues is the load to those servers is high. Hence why at 5pm streaming YouTube at anything but LQ is pointless.
Google subverted this issue by not actually directing Chromecast to the YouTube servers but instead to another far less congested one. Makes sense to provide the best user experience.
So yes you will get better quality on the Chromecast then any other device using your network.

Not sure for RealPlayer Cloud, but with Avia, you can Share items to the Avia app, though Avia can't necessarily play some items that are classed as video.
Realplayercloud is just wasting space, not sure why I haven't deleted that app yet. I have yet to get anything to play without uploading first to their server. Very stupid. Pay the $3 for Avia.

RealPlayer Cloud will only cast direct if (it thinks) the media is Chromecast-compatible.
On the plus side, it's free to use with Chromecast..
For Avia to work with Chromecast you need to buy the $2.99 add-on license.
On the plus side, Avia will try regardless (it will warn though), but it's not guaranteed to succeed.
Is it normal that Avia won't play a 1080p movie through chromecast? Its in mp4 format. However, 720p works fine. 1080 will play fine on my nexus 7, but always get not supported when trying to cast.

Short answer, yes.
Digital video consists of five main things: Container type, Resolution, Sample type, Sample rate, Encoding type and Bitrate
1080p is just the vertical resolution (1080) and sample type (p = progressive, as opposed to i for interlaced)
It doesn't say what the container type or sample rate.
Container type doesn't matter too much for Chromecast as its main formats (H.264) is not usually in a container anyway (though it's valid to have H.264 in a MOV, AVI or MKV).
Sample rate can be safely assumed as 30 or 60 Hz for US/Canada/Japan, or 25 or 50 Hz for Europe and elsewhere.
Most important for Chromecast are encoding type and bitrate.
Encoding type because Chromecast needs to know how to decode that format. Check Supported media formats for Cast devices.
Bitrate is also important because if the bitrate is too high, the wireless network will get saturated and the audio/video data won't arrive in time, which will cause pausing, skipping, jumping or complete failure to play. This is especially important for playback of local media since it can take twice the bitrate on the wireless network. Check WiFi Bandwidth and Router considerations for pictures.
Thus, Avia recommends 720p video... It'll depend on your casting device and network conditions as well - not all devices can fully use 802.11n bandwidth, and your Chromecast may not be getting optimal WiFi reception (and therefore limited bandwidth).
From Avia's FAQ:
Chromecast does not support many 1080p and high bit-rate video playback. Videos recorded at 1080p may stutter and buffer frequently while streaming to Chromecast. You can configure your phone to record at 720p to have a better casting experience.
Open your device’s camera application, go to video mode, and under Settings option change Video Quality to HD 720p.
For Samsung Galaxy devices: The default bit rates for video recording on Samsung Galaxy are too high. For an optimal casting experience, switch from 1080p to 720p, and change “Recording Mode” to “Normal” or “Fine”.

If other DLNA clients aren't seeing the media, then it's something on the Plex side... maybe the Plex database needs to be refreshed?

Hi guys
I'm wondering if Mi Mix Pro can run 4K videos from YouTube, also are there any news about a Nougat update or is it being left with Marshmallow? Also, does it run 60 FPS videos without lag?
The YouTube app doesn't let me select anything about 1080p. I never noticed that until now.
60FPS video doesn't really mean anything. What matters is the codec, the resolution and the bitrate. Is the video DivX or h264 or h265 or whatever. Which profile? The Mi Mix has an Adreno 530 which can handle 4K up to 60FPS. I tried a few high bitrate (~60Mbps) 4k test clips at 24, 30 and 60FPS and they played fine.
Does the screen shows pixels?

I noticed that the screen pixel density is way too low 361, compare to the S8 or other phones which have 400+?
