I am still on stock 4.3.
But I'd like to root someday.
Is it recommended to do this before updating to 4.4. or can I easily do it afterwards?
Thx

thanks in advance

I would like to. I installed ARHD 51 but it made my phone feel laggy and i also had reception issues. Had to put in my APN settings and even then my phone would pretty much stay on 3G and not go to LTE. i used my nandroid backup and reverted back. I wondered if i had to upgrade my firmware but that seems like a whole other issue to me. i don't know which firmware and some say to relock the bootloader while others say it's not necessary...just so confused.
maybe i'm making this more difficult than it is but as i've said, i'm a newb and really don't want to mess my phone up.

I know what you mean, but that's the great thing about having nandroid backup, if you end up with something that you don't like you can always go back. Have a try of the rom in my signature, or the sinless sense rom. Both are 4.2.2 and run exceptionally well for me.
I would recommend staying unlocked, though others will probably suggest you relock, ruu etc.

I have an HTC ONE on verizon.
I have been reading up on unlocking of the bootloader, rooting and achieving s-off, I have a few questions that I am hoping the XDA community can help with.
1.I am on 4.3 jellybean on my ONE will the new tool for HTC devices?
2. I just checked and the new software for the one 4.4 KitKat is out for my version of the one finally! My question is would the new tool still work if I took the 4.4 OTA update or would I loose the ability to use the new tool?
3. Also I know in this process some where that you loose everything on your phone, can someone recommend a method and/or an app to backup all of that stuff so that I do not loose it?
As for backing up your data, I'd suggest Helium. Since you're not rooyed, you will need a companion app on your computer.

anyone else ideas?
Noobies should not attempt to root or modify
Dont take the kk update and use firewater to unlock and get s-off. Once s-off flash a recovery and use it to backup the phone. Make sure to move the backup to your pc. Then reflash stock recovery and take the ota. Then reflash custom recovery and flash superuser with it. You would then be s-off stock rooted kitkat.
On the other hand, if you don't want S-Off (I doubt you need it), you should OTA-upgrade first to get the newest firmware for your device, then unlock and root. You should still be able to S-Off after that if you want.
If you go this route, you will lose all the contents of the phone. Helium (buggy as it is, it mostly works) a backup of SMS/call log/contacts (if they're not stored in a Google account), and a backup of /sdcard is approximately everything. Also take screenshots of what your desktop looks like, just in case you have a hard time getting that back.
You can take the ota first, it has been confirmed that firewater works on the new ota.

I agree. I doubt you will need S-OFF. You really only need it if the phone didn't allow flashing kernels, radios, and images with S-ON. But since you only need root with the HTC One, I'd suggest to stay away from S-OFF. A simple typo could brick your phone if I'm not mistaken.

Are you sure? I have been reading around these forums and others and haven't heard anything? Not doubting you just don't want to take the OTA update and then loose my chance to do this to my phone?
I just Ulocked, rooted and S-offed my Freshly OTA updated to 4.4.2 One. No problems or issues.
I used :
HTCDEV to unlock
CWM for recovery and root
and FireWater to S-off
Had some hiccups along the way but nothing that came close to bricking it. Just had to change a few settings and permissions.

Mmmmm not sure how to use that for backing up my phone.
Hey guys, I just bought this phone yesterday from AT&T. Just out of the box I received an OTA update, which I thought was the KK update. But no, I am stuck on android 4.1.2 and Sense 5.0, and when I try to update, all I get is a message saying that everything is up to date and there are no updates available for me.
I am on the AT&T network at the time, and my phone is completely stock, no mod whatsoever. Any ideas what is going on????
You might want to exchange for a new unit or request for them to update, for all we know applying solutions suggested by us might just void the warranty instead.

use this RUU to get to 4.3 >> http://androidruu.com/getdownload.p...13_10.38j.1157.04_release_334235_signed_2.exe

+1 .. do it now!
Lets say I don't do S-Off (i don't really know what that is, my earlier phone was a crappy samsung) and I do the update with the RUU, will I be able to do S-Off later???
The thing is that i don't want to void the warranty. Coming from a really bad phone, where I had to mod EVERYTHING to get it working acceptably, I would really like to settle down and be stock for a while. Of course, that feeling will probably last a few months and then I will be flashing roms every 2 days lol.
If I flash the RUU manually, that doesn't void the warranty right? I mean, its an official firmware i suppose. On the other hand, if I can only do the S-Off thing right now, i might consider staying a while longer with 4.1.2 ... after all it is not so bad.

Mmm I think I'll start reading more before I make any decisions. Eventually I will root and install custom rims and kernels, so I'd like to keep my options open. If it's HARD but not impossible I might upgrade and stay stock.
Would you say there's a big difference between 4.1.2 / Sense 5.0 and 4.3 / Sense 5.5 ???
It's not that hard really.. i decided to s-off when im already running a KK rom. Firewater worked like a charm.

Well, I just came over from the iPhone, but I've had an Android phone before that I rooted, but now it seems much more complicated.

You need to follow the instructions in that thread
Unlock boot loader
Flash recovery in fastboot from PC using adb with fastboot commands
Make a nandroid/backup of your stock rom
Place the SuperSu.zip on your sdcard and flash in recovery to obtain root. If you want root on stock ROM or you can just simply flash the BadBoys ROM it already comes Rooted.
Just read the OP of threads and educate yourself on what you are doing. You can learn a lot by simply taking time to read thru things thoroughly. Maybe read the same things more than once to completely understand what you are doing.
As far as the BB ROM you are already on the HK firmware. You might wanna look into obtaining Soff it makes things easier on this phone

Alright. I was able to succesfully root my phone, but now I'm a little confused on how to get the ROM I want. I'm not willing to pay for a ROM without seeing what I need/like first, so I figured I'd try some out. I was looking at Android Rev HD. Would I be able to flash that ROM if I'm still on 4.4.2? Also, whats the best way to get any app I'd might want? Sorry for the newb questions. I'm just trying to be extra cautious.

All Roms are free the only thing that cost is the S-off tool which is sunshine.
Put it this way since you are S-on you basically have to take the official OTA all the way up to 4.4.4 cause you are on 4.4.2.
If you want to flash any ROM that is based on a version other than what you are currently on you will have issues.
For example you are on 4.4.2 and have the firmware that comes with that version. Every time we receive an update on our phones are H-boot, recovery and firmware are also flashed with an ota. The only way to upgrade your firmware being S-on is to basically put stick recovery back and be 100% stick than take ota
S-OFF allows you to by pass the crappy part having to take the entire OTA. With S-Off you can flash just the firmware and or HBoot/recovery without taking the ota.
In order to run the newer Roms that are 4.4.4 you have to no if and or buts most definitely have to be on the firmware that is for 4.4.4 and also it is recommended to update your Hboot along the way cause if you aren't in the latest firmware you will have issues like no WiFi and long as hell boot times so if I was you I would S-off for 25$ before I even went past 4.4.2

Ended up getting Digitalhigh's GPE 5.0 ROM. I wasn't able to backup before I flashed the ROM though, because I did a factory wipe of all data in TWRP, and lost my backup with that. But I was able to flash the ROM succesfully, and it's running great. If I wanted to revert back to Stock ROM how would I go about doing that? Also, what about going to different Custom ROMs? And last question. Where's the best place to find some cool apps. I'd really like a one where I can download movies/tv shows if possible.
Also, thanks a million times. I think I've got the jist of things now, and feel pretty confident venturing on my own. I really appreciate everyone being patient with me.
My M7 isn't rooted, nor does it have any mods. It is and has always been 100% stock. Last week I received the OTA update to Lollipop and since then I'm experiencing a lot of problems (like so many others). But even without the problems, I just don't like Lollipop. I don't like the new notifications, I don't like the new toggles, etc. So I would like to go back to KitKat. I have found a few tutorials but all assume your M7 isn't stock. And like I said, mine is.
A few questions:
Does the fact that my M7 is still 100% stock make reverting to KitKat easier?
It's been many years since I last flashed my phone (it was a HD2) so I really don't remember what's involved. I do remember however I need the proper RUU. How do I find out which RUU I need (I'm in the Netherlands)?
Are there any tutorials that explain how to go from stock Lollipop to stock KitKat?
If these questions have been answered a thousand times before, I apologize. I just couldn't find those answers then.

should really post this in the help and support section.
but if you are 100% pure stock then the only way you can back flash is to get s-off first, and that will cost you $25 using sunshine s-off tool, there is no other way to backflash.
also if you do decide to get s-off and go back to kitkat, your phone will constantly nagg you and give you notifications about the Lollipop update.

Sunshine as far as I know is the only way to s-off HBOOT 1.61, 1.60, and 1.57, unless you have used it before, then its free to s-off the same device again, you only ever pay once.
and @Zippy1970 will be on 1.61 HBOOT as he has the official 100% stock update.

So Im no noob to android nor the rom/rooting crap. But i come from nexus devices and we all know how super simple those are to use and return to stock. I dont understand the HTC crap. I bought this m9 and thought it was going to be dev friendly like nexus's are but I was wrong. This is what I did. Unlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP (and before I made the backup, I set it to r/w) then i made a stock backup that was set on R/W and did some other things like flashing CM etc.. My question is, if i wanted to return to stock and be able to receive OTAs, what must I do. Would downloading a stock nandroid from here be enough or must I run an RUU(which i dont understand). Also, I still have S-ON and have not modified that. If read some guides but Im still confused. Nothing like a nexus. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks (tmobile USA)

So Im no noob to android nor the rom/rooting crap. But i come from nexus devices and we all know how super simple those are to use and return to stock. I dont understand the HTC crap. Your best bet is to run the RUU exe from your pc, its very simple and takes about 10 min. It wipes everything and put you back to 100% stock.
it will not change your unlocked bootloader or S-on/S-off. keep in mind since you are S-on you can only use the RUU for the current version that is on your phone, you cant go back to earlier version
you can get the RUU's here
also the get OTA you have to be unrooted, and have stock recovery
Hope this helps

So, if I S-off I can run an RUU for any version, even the newest? And as long as I have stock recovery/unrooted I will be able to get OTA? Its that easy? Thanks for the help
