Ive had this phone since October been rooted since last week and now that I'm on 4.4.2 I miss root. I'm running the rogers ota on the rogers phone and I'm just wondering if you guys would reccomend unlocking the boot loader? I loose my warranty which shouldn't be to much of a problem but is it worth unlocking?

We have enough messed up politicians without his help.
Had two, sold one, decided I wanted a spare again so I bought another. Will probably sell my spare once wireless charging has been added to both. With Fido giving them away like mad around Christmas there were lots to be had for a great price.

That is the plan. Waiting for more wireless charging pads. Once they arrive I will test them, if they will charge the phone via a usb cable I will open up the phones and attempt to stuff them inside. Based on the pictures I have seen there is enough space to sneak them in. Of course I also need to find solder points for the USB power internally(micro soldering is no problem). It is the one feature I so wish the phone had, so if it can be done I'm going to do it.

Long story short the vzw rep told me to install the leaked update saying it would fix my 3g connection problems (which it didn't) and now I'm stuck with no root. I would like to either get root or go back to stock if thats possible. Is it possible to use the sbf and go back? Any help would be appreciated.

Won't work.
If I'm not mistaken. There is no way to go back to release stock. Since that update updated the bootloader / or kernel, FXZ ( SPF ) which ever you perfer to call it won't work since the updated bootloader.
sucks i know.
I have never heard about a vzw rep telling you to install something that is leaked. (most of the time voids warranty.)
About the only thing i can tell you is to try to get a hold of @p3droid on twitter and try to get a root method from him for test. but that may be unlikely but could be worth it if your willing to test stuff for him.
Anyway, Good luck with the phone.
I hope you get it

A Verizon rep telling you to install a leak... that reminds me of the Verizon store near me. They're (almost) all a bunch of idiots, at least every one I've encountered in there was. One guy tried to tack a note onto my account saying that my insurance should be removed since I "rooted" my phone, when I actually just had go launcher running. wasn't actually rooted at that time, I know better than to tread in their turf with the Superuser hanging around.
Couldn't he just apply the FXZ image since that's basically a whole phone image?

Ya dude they aren't the brightest but I couldn't get data on 3g at all the airplane toggle, factory reset, and sbf didn't fix it so I took the plunge to the latest leak with no success. When you call the tech people up on the phone they read from a script and its like dude I already factory reset a battery pulls not gonna fix it.....
For what it's worth, I've been seeing some issues with 3G lately myself, but I'm in an area where we have had LTE for less than two weeks. Every time I use 3G only, I get network issues as well, so my guess was it's just Verizon doing backend things and ****ing with the network.

I don't normally comment just to comment but I agree I came from an S3 to a Note 2 to an S4 all Samsung obviously and by far and away this is the best phone I've used in a very long time if ever. Blazing fast great screen good build quality and I love that it isn't locked down like the S4. I just switched 2 days ago as I was tired of fighting with ROMs and not being able to use an AOSP version. My g2 is considerably faster than the S4 overall.

Lol "fighting with ROMs". I feel you bro. You won't have to worry about that on the G2. Stock ROM is awesome and so is CM.
On the Motorola Defy however... let's not go there. You're lucky to have come across the G2.

It will still say rooted in your about phone section in the settings menu. Luckily there is nothing wrong with my phone. But if there was i would just buy a new phone. I have had horrible luck with Verizons replacement phones.
But as far as i have seen there is no way to fix the "rooted " message in the settings menu.
Like the title says, is the Verizon Wireless Dev Edition worth the extra $50 for the unlocked bootloader and additional 16gb?
Coming from moto devices with locked bootloaders (Droid 1, 3, Razr Maxx) you would think it would be an easy answer because of the unlocked bootloader the Dev Edition has. Just want to make sure if it's really worth it, as this will most likely be my last Moto device (Thx to Lenovo).
Do you want a warranty if you plan to unlock? Do you need the 32gb or is 16 good?
I don't see any other need for discussion ....its what you need. No one here can guess what you need?
But my quick answer ...soley based on the fact that 50 is not a huge amount of cash....yes. I'd get it for sure if I could have. Why not?
Sent from my Moto X cellular telephone...
Do you want root without having to jump through hoops and ladders, hoping that someone finds an exploit after each OTA? If so then yes, the extra cost (which is just for the extra 16gb) isn't that much in the big picture and is definitely worth the convenience if you are a root/rom user.
Also, I don't think Lenovo is going to ruin Motorola like everyone is thinking they are, but that's for a different topic.
For me yes. I don't want a device that I cannot unlock the bootloader.
It's the same price as a non-DE 32 GB Moto X. The real question is, "what's more important for you: a custom-designed phone or an unlockable bootloader?" For me, the decision was easy, I took the DE and bought a diztronic case to cover the white back.

Keeping the warranty while unlocked would be nice. I currently have a 64gb external + 16gb internal on my Razr Maxx, so I probably will need all the space possible.
I just wanted to hear some opinions of people, if think it's worth it or not and why.

All my phones have been protected with an Otterbox, never have been naked so there wouldn't be a point in getting a custom one.
How good is a diztronic compared to an Otterbox?

If you're an otter box guy, you'll want to stick with that brand. I have always gone case-less, but just can't stomach the white back on the DE. The diztronic is merely for looks -- I can't imagine it would be of any use if the phone were dropped.

No, but it's about as easy as rooting a Nexus device (unlock the bootloader via Motorola's website, flash a custom recovery, then flash SU). And you get to keep your warranty.
Without the DE, you cannot unlock the bootloader, and to get root you need to downgrade to 4.2.2 and run an exploit which involves executing some scripts via telnut. And once the next OTA comes out, it's likely this method will be patched and you'd need to wait for another exploit to be found.

I might miss it more since I paid ~$500 for the Limited Edition (Employee Edition) one, so to me it is much more than just a Razr Maxx, dumb I know...How different is battery life between the too? I would think that the X would hang in there with the Droid regardless of battery size since the Maxx is 2 years old.

With the MAXX I could easily get 24+ hours with 5.5-6 hrs screen on time with heavy use. Some people on here have been able to get close to that with their X, but I'm getting closer to 3.5-4 hrs of screen on time.
As always you're mileage may vary.

Well you do have to re-root after an OTA (assuming you haven't made system changes so that you can even take it) just like a Nexus, but it's still simply just reflashing a custom recovery and the SU zip. The bootloader stays unlocked.
For me yes its worth it. Rooting a non-Dev edition, looks like too much monkey business for me to be involved in. And I do like the extra 16gb.

Very easy I see. I thought that with every OTA even on the DE you have to re-root. So on a DE/Unlocked Bootleader SU/Root stays permanently, thanks for clarifying. .

If you're going with a case, then the woven white back of the DE vs. customization of the moto maker version is off the table.
That brings it down to how much do you need root? and how easy do you want the root process to be.
Yes, you need to re-root for every OTA. To root in the first place, you flash a custom recovery (like TWRP), then flash/install SuperSU. To get ready for the next OTA, as long as you didn't touch system files, etc, just flash the stock recovery back on, take the OTA. Once its on there, re-root by flashing custom recovery then flash/install SuperSU.
I for one wanted root enough to purchase the Dev X for Verizon in early Nov, just two days before the first price drop. I don't regret it. Its easy to root, easy to put back to take OTA and re-root. And has 32gig (the 16gig version only had 11gig available to me out of the box which was not enough).
$50 for 16 GB was enough for me. The bootloader that is easier to unlock made the cost even more justifiable. I really don't care what my phone looks like as long as it is not gaudy, so the color choice, or lack thereof, didn't really bother me.
My only complaint with the phone is the current lack of development. Coming from a Galaxy Nexus toro, I knew there wouldn't be as much development, but it's drastically less. There have been no official releases from CM or AOKP which still baffles me.
The phone just isn't that popular for some crazy reason.....boo Google....hopefully the new guys turn Motorola around. Also the things that make the Moto x unique are gone on CM. So demand is low. Xposed fills the gap nicely tho.
Voiding warranties unlocking non dev boot loaders probably adds to the lack of interest too.

So I now have an upgrade available for my Verizon Wireless account. I have mulled over waiting for the X2 love enough and with the rave reviews I always see for the Moto X (minus the camera), I'm pulling the trigger. Have a few questions first. Asked on another thread but nobody addressed my questions.
1. I would like to have root for Root Call Blocker and Greenify but have read that there is no root for new phones unless it's a developer edition, correct?
2. If question one is correct, am I able to use my upgrade (which makes the phone one cent) towards the price of the dev edition, or would I have to pay the full amount for the dev edition X?
3. For those that have had experience with the wood backs, do you have any positive or negatives that are noteworthy? I have found that there is a brand that makes wood cases so maybe a wood back isn't necessary. I just think it's so unique. Haven't seen one in person though. Maybe they look crappy in person for all I know. From the pictures it just makes this beautiful device even more appealing.
4. Is the X wireless charging compatible?
Can't think of any other questions at this time. I'd probably get the 32 gig. Open to any other issues good or bad that I am not aware of.

1. Correct. A retail Verizon will probably come with 4.4.2 now and it can't be rooted.
2. No, I'm pretty sure you have to buy the dev edition outright. Well worth it in my opinion.
3. Not sure, sorry.
4. No built in wireless charging. Tho a few have opened it up, did some soldering and made it work. Bye bye warranty tho.
Hope that helps!
Very helpful thanks so much. Just pulled the trigger on the X. Very excited!

I went ahead and got the discount through Verizon. 32 gig version since there's no SD slot. Only cost me $50 so that seemed pretty good. It was a tough decision because I really wanted root, but I will just have to bite the bullet for the money I'm saving. I'll keep my fingers crossed that somehow the X I created through the Moto Maker site hasn't been updated to KitKat. Slim chances I know, but that's what I did. If it somehow hasn't been updated to 4.4.2, is there any way for me to prevent it from automatically updating when I receive it and root? All I need is root. Don't need to unlock my bootloader as I won't be installing any custom roms. Unless this is one of those devices that you need both to have one or the other. I think my Nexus7 was like that.

You have a 0.1% chance that it won't be pre-installed with 4.4.2.

You can keep an eye on the MiddleMan thread, and can hope your X is a winner, if you're willing to spend the money for a forever-unlocked X :victory:
Update: just saw you were already posting over there, good luck either way

I don't know about Call Blocker, but you don't need root to use the basic function of Greenify. It can't automatically hibernate apps in the background, but it can automate hibernating of all running apps manually. It have a widget so I just put the widget on my dock and press it once a while.
As for woodback, save your money and get the nonslip material, which is more comfortable and grippy to hold. I believe if it fell, the dents will be less visible compared to woodbacks as well. The woodbacks are nice looking, but is more slippy. Also they aren't real wood (some people say the bamboo version is real wood but it didn't seem that way when I had it). You could get adhesive real wood back from toastmade.com which I think is higher quality, but it will add more bulk to the phone and is not comfortable to hold unless you sand down the edges.
Also the app Helium for backing up apps data doesn't need root to work.

Once you're rooted you can freeze the Android Update service. This will stop it checking for OTAs.

The last time I used Greenify on a non-rooted device it was a bit time consuming. Everything had to be done manually unless I was doing something wrong. Or maybe it's better now from what you're saying. That'd be nice.
I did not get the woodback. I figured if I wanted a wood back I could always get one of the few wood cases or backs later. Toast Back was the exact one I saw that gave me confidence that I should get the regular back. I'm very happy.
And if I don't end up with root I will DEFINITELY be checking out Helium, thanks!

Helium not working on X yet. I have a link in my sigi.
I have both the T-Mobile and AT&T version with 4.4.2, no root, both have Helium working without problems. Check your drivers.

I just use the free version. What I did is:
-Install Motorola driver: http://download.clockworkmod.com/drivers/MotoHelper_2.1.32_Driver_5.4.0.exe
-Run Helium on the phone and run Helium PC program: http://www.clockworkmod.com/carbon
-Connect the phone to PC, then the Helium app will ask to enable USB Debugging
-In a moment after enabling USB Debugging, a window will pop up asking to allow ADB permission for the PC, if the permission window doesn't pop up, unplug and replug the phone
-In a few seconds you should see a green check in the Helium PC app

Well it finally happened, I dropped my X. Or more like someone whacked it out of my hands. It's fine, but there's a gouge in the metal frame that's already driving me nuts. So I wanna use my Moto Care to get a new one, but I want to make sure that the one I get will have KK, because it's a pain to downgrade. So, those of you who have recently gotten your Pure Editions- did they come with KK or are they already updated to Lollipop? TIA.
I received my MotoX 2014 pure edition on 2/13. It came with Lollipop. I did use the factory mage from here to downgrade to KitKat.

I don't need your help, tard. I just thought there were more steps involved... per you, actually. I'll show you the damage next time I see you, it's heartbreaking.
