I unlocked the bootloader, flashed CWM recovery, took a backup.
Factory reset, wiped cache, dalvik cache and then installed CM10 build#3 from here. I had extracted the boot.img so I did flash the boot using fastboot but it says
sudo fastboot flash boot boot.img
sending 'boot' (0 KB)...
FAILED (remote: unknown command)
finished. total time: 0.000s
Next, when I boot the device normally, it gets stuck on the white screen with HTC displayed on it.
So I went back into recovery, wiped everything again and installed the ROM again. This was repeated a few times, but to no avail.
I use only Linux on my laptop, not Windows so HTC Sync and stuffs strictly related to Windows do not apply. Now, I have these options:
1. Either I restore my phone to the saved backup successfully, but CWM won't let me do it. It exits with the common MD5 mismatch. And I don't have an SD card reader. So is it possible to boot my phone via fastboot and mount the SD card somehow and access the backup file so that I can generate the md5 again?
2. Or, next option that I have is to download a ROM which is *working* taking the help of a friend using his SD card(which might delay the process) and install that new ROM on my phone. In that case, please direct me to some such ROMs and the exact way to flash if I did it wrong.
I'd prefer Option 1, so please provide some help for the same.
UPDATE: Generated md5 and restored.
UPDATE #2: Unable to flash boot875.img NOPE kernel after installing CM10 again. Did a full wipe, and installed CM build#3 again and tried flashing boot875.img via fastboot and it doesn't say anything in the terminal.
Your phone was connected via fastboot when you were flashing and was there any problem, like your phone disconnected or something?

I did use a USB 3 port. Let me try it again using USB 2, and I'll post back the update.
UPDATE: It still says

Anyway I could access my phone's shell using my Linux laptop? adb shell doesn't work. If I enter the shell, I can modify the md5 navigating to the backup directory.
UPDATE: Restored md5.

Already did that, I flashed the ROM and then tried to flash boot875.img and boot750.img NOPE kernel. Still same error!
When I got error, then I was extracting in laptop just to check the contents of the zip file, and then it said that error as mentioned in picture of the last post.

u have tried a 4.0.3 rom based. the boot image it will boot for this time, you have to see if the rom is the problem or the the phone is, or maybe the pc, the other thing that can solve it is to relock bootloader, after try to unlock it again and reroot it with the CWM maybe it will help you

Hey guys!
I have a problem, and to be perfectly honest I am not a massive expert at this sort of stuff, but bare with me.
I am trying to install Virtuous ICS Rom RC2 on my Incredible S, but once I've done so it won't boot past the HTC logo. Tried a clean wipe (factory reset/cache/dalvik cache), and even changing from EXT3 to EXT4 and back, but nothing works. Now, I've had this problem before with other various ROMs, and it seems that I can only get flawless installs and boots from Cyanogenmod 7.1 and MIUI (not the ICS version).
Currently running 4EXT recovery and MIUI, but I want the ICS rom really bad, and other Incredible S users are flashing without any problems, so I'm not sure what gives.
Any and all help would be appreciated (and sorry if this is a noob-ish question and/or in the wrong forum)!
Make sure you have the newest ClockWork Recovery Mod installed. If you do try reinstalling it and an engineering hBoot. I would say the problem would be that one of those are corrupt.
I will try both of those and get back to you with the results! Thanks!
Okay, so I updated CWM to 5.0.2.0, which did not do anything. When you say reinstall, do you mean a completely removal of CWM and then installing it again? Because I'm not sure how to do that.
Also, as usual, MIUI 1.2.30 installs just fine, but I just tried installing MIUI 2.12.13 and ended up in a bootloop. So, thus far, I can only flash two roms; CM7.1 and MIUI 1.2.30. These two were the first two roms I ever flashed, not sure if that has anything to do with anything but I thought it might be worth mentioning.
Unlocked bootloader with htcdev? You might need to reflash the boot.img from your desired rom's zip file with the command
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
i think you should flash the new ROM image

Read the FAQ sticky post for info on how to flash the boot.img file in a custom ROM.zip file.
Will do, thanks guys, wish me luck.
The correct first question is: Is the OP S-Off or HTC unlocked? if it's the latter, follow Nonverbose's advice.

Okay, so I highlighted FASTBOOT and pressed the power button, then plugged in the USB and it changed to FASTBOOT USB. However, my PC doesn't find my phone, so I can't run the cmd prompts. Should I just go through the steps listed in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105?

No that would not be applicable in your case from what you have told us. If you are S-Off and have a custom ROM installed, then you probably don't have HBOOT 1.16 or 2.00. That is why I wanted you to get the Fastboot getvar all information.
Have you installed HTC Sync on your PC to get the appropriate drivers set up?
Just installed HTC Sync and got all the appropriate drivers. Still won't show up as a disk when I'm in Fastboot, but I'm guessing it's not supposed to either.

No it won't show as a disk drive. Open a command window and set the working directory to the one where you installed adb.exe and Fastboot.exe and then type:
Fastboot devices and it should respond with your device serial number. If it does then you can type:
Fastboot getvar all

Ok you still have S-Off and now that you have fastboot working I would try reflashing CWM 5.0.2.0 recovery image in fastboot mode.
Copy the CWM recovery.img file to the directory where you have fastboot.exe. If you have a zip file for CWM5.0.2.0 then open the zip and copy the .img file.
Then in fastboot mode type the command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Then I would try flashing Virtuous ICS.
Hm, sadly that didn't help, it still just bootloops and/or get stuck on the bootscreen (depending on the ROM, tried both the Virtuous ROM and the new MIUI).

You're not supposed to clear /system.Anyway, Looking at your screenshots seems like you've lost recovery.
So flash CWM recovery through fastboot [ here is the Link]
Then flash any custom rom upon that.
If the above solution doesnt work out, then Flash lollipop from SP Flash tool [ LINK ] .Make sure you read flashing instructions properly this time.
Hope it works! Cheers!

Its not hanged. Keeping your phone in FASTBOOT MODE ( which you did in that screenshot ) , then through your PC you have to flash recovery(following the link for flashing CWM recovery). If this process seems to be complicated, try alternative soln i.e, Flash Stock ROM via SP Flash Tool.

flash a stock rom and everything will be back as it was. dont worry its very hard to brick a mtk device
it seems like you have no idea what you are doing, so no wonder you end up breaking your phone. next time read the instructions carefully and then watch a youtube video before doing it. actually watching a video is better than reading.

Flash userdata.img using fastboot and mounting data error will go. Similarly flash system.img and other images using fastboot commands and your device will run as usual. All img's will be in stock firmware ( sp tools flashable). Of you can directly flash your mobile through sp flash tools and ur device will be up and running. You may loose your imei but it can be easily fixed.

PC:
Install HTC Driver the decompress ADB-Windows.zip.
Phone:
Go to (Settings -> About -> Software information -> More -> Build number), Tap it 7 times to enable developer options.
Go to (Settings -> Developer options), Check OEM unlocking and USB debugging options.
PC:
Go to ADB-Windows folder and hold Shift + Right Mouse Click the click open command windows here.
Input the command below to test adb function.
Code:

Download mode is same as fastboot in bootloader on old devices, so you must to do UNLOCK, FLASH or RUU in download mode.
Go to HTCdev website to unlock bootloader, you can search many guides on Google.
0x02 Flash TWRP Recovery
TWRP 3.0.2-0
Reboot to download mode and flash recovery.
Code:
adb reboot download
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-0-e56ml.img
After flash recovery, reboot to bootloader then BOOT TO RECOVERY MODE.
0x03 Format Data
Wipe -> Format Data -> type yes to format data
Please reboot to recovery after formatting.
0x04 Install SuperSU
Please download SuperSU v2.78, i've test this version and work like a charm.
Before flashing su, please ensure that BOOT image is stock.

I have tested on dual-sim device (Taiwanese model) but single-sim devices, need volunteer to test it.
In this situation TWRP will request password, stock BOOT and boot into android once, in the meanwhile userdata will be encrypted.
BUT you won't do nothing if you flash TWRP, just format the userdata and install SuperSU, encryption doesn't matter anymore.

please advice.
Now I use magisk.
I downgraded my phone to 2.17.401.1 (with RUU) and then updated via ota to 2.23.401.1.
Then installed TWRP. From there I installed all three files from the links in the magisk section. Booted into recovery and installed the two zip-files, this time I had to format data to be able to install.
When booted I installed magisk manager from my download directory and Phils superuser app from play store.
Checked root with Root checker to confirm.

Hey can u help me? When I try fastboot flash recovery part, I get cannot load 'twrp-3.0.2-0-e56ml.img' message.
Hello, sorry if I am asking such a beginner question, but here is the deal, I am trying to install lineage os on my motorola moto g 2 (2014, titan), anyway, I tried to boot in recovery the twrp but it doesn't work because my phone says "no command", however I managed to find out that if I press the power button for 2-5 seconds and at the same time press and release the up button I manage to enter the options for recovery mode (such as boot normally, boot bootloader, wipe all data etc, etc).
Anyway I wanted to know what I should do in this situation so that I could root my phone (yes I already copied the lastest supersu to my sd card).
Sorry again for such a "noob" question, but it is my first time and I can't find anything.
Thank you so much!
Edit: I know that supersu doesn't root, what I am trying to say is that I am trying to root my phone (I can't do it) and also twrp is not working because it says no command.
No command is stock recovery. To get the options in stock recovery hold vol+ and then tap power.
As for the TWRP... you'll have to unlock your bootloader with fastboot. Then also use fastboot to flash TWRP. Then once you boot into TWRP click install and then navigate to the SuperSU zip file and select it. Swipe to flash.

Interesting. No errors with fastboot? Also, you could try fastboot boot command to boot TWRP without actually flashing it. It might work. If it does you can still flash the root file and then you could use flashify and root to flash the TWRP permanently. (If you so desire.)

I put the twrp img on my adb/fastboot dir, cd the dir and I tried again to flash the smartphone
In download:
cmd: download:007ef00
That is the one error I had.
Is it because I left a copy on the smartphone?
I can't flash other way if execute the command outside that it says the file doesn't exist (even if it is on smartphone).

Is this the screen you were on when you typed the fastboot flash recovery (path to twrp) command?

Nope, I don't even pass from the fastboot menu, when I try to flash TWRP.
I get that screen when I try to boot recovery, but it just says no command, it doesn't have all those letters..
Do you have a way of sending a pic of what your phone's fastboot screen looks like? PM me and I'll give you my email.

I think maybe your on the wrong screen. You may have to boot to android and use adb reboot bootloader to get to the fastboot screen.

I have a weird issue with TWRP that I cannot seem to resolve.
I have a 4GB Mix on the latest MIUI (China Stable). Bootloader is unlocked and I followed all the steps to got successfully TWRP loaded onto my device and i can come right in to it.
If i restart the device and use volume+ and power TWRP isn't there. Only the stock recovery from MIUI.
I tried the tutorial here on XDA and this one ''en.miui.com/thread-500625-1-1.html"
Is there someone who can help me please?
Many Thanks from the Nederlands!

I guess you jumped from Samsung, didn't you? Because i remember that you manually have to reboot into recovery at the first time(right after flashing the twrp via odin). So you need to do it from fastboot on Xiaomi(afaik). Just flash the twrp and enter this code in fastboot:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp-blabla.img

Hi,
i have a package updated for Mix...
I made quick *.bat command to easily flash what i need...
Try OEM unlock tool (bat file) before trying to flash TWRP...
Be sure to have ADB device found in first line and be in fastboot mode !!

Hope help a bit... Cheers !

Nope, from the Nexus 6P.
I just tested it and now I'm right in TWRP again. That great! Thanks!!
So every time I want to use TWRP, I need to go into fastboot mode and use that command line?
Nope... power and Vol - or + need make the job or you can install xposed and add a module MIUI Extended Reboot...
Will looks like something like that...

Sorry bored to take a picture from my device...
Thanks for your reply.
No, Power and Vol + i get MI-Recovery 3.0 (main menu) and if i use Power and vol - than i get fastboot mode.
So I now have two recovery's on my device. Is that possible? (TWRP and MI Recovery)
I think i have found the problem..
I've installed TWRP in fastboot mode. I've used ''fastboot boot twrpmrraines.img'' to get into TWRP the first time and i have tried to flash TWRP as recovery.
Now I get the following error message ''error opening: / sdcard'' So there seems to be an error with the sd card i think?
Nope Recovery and fastboot mode are different.... Recovery is used to backup, mount and flash ROM, Mod and various ZIP, IMG files...
Fastboot Mode is used to flash, push, IMG, APK, and sometimes ROM if you use Fastboot method...
Anyway, check in recovery if u can repair sdcard... in wipe feature, DO NOT WIPE, choose REPAIR / Advanced/etc......

Can not select sdcard if I click on ''Repair or Change File System'' If I go to Wipe-Advanced Wipe I must select: Dalvik, system, data, internal storage, cache or usb otg. There is no sdcard.
On Mix, SDcard is internal storage....

Invalid partition selection if i click Internal Storage..
then you can't repair internal storage... can u see, when Mix is on Android ROM, your internal storage... with explorer or PC when u mount as MTP... ?

Try an another version of twrp image. For me twrp by Mr Raines has no issue other than error 7(mount read-only).

Think I said you before only first boot of twrp.
mount read only can be fixed by go to Mounting and check/uncheck read only system and recheck system...
Then u can flash what u want... strange issue but works...

Man, my point was your installed twrp may have got an issue. If it has issue, that's normal can't flash something anything. Use fastboot to flash another twrp as usual.
