Hi guys, i've been using MIUI Rom on my Galaxy S i9000 for a week now and it's really really fast, smooth and just excellent!
The only problem I have is that my Data connection seems to be very slow.. I'm in Australia on the Telstra network. I get the "E" in the notifications bar which means i'm connected to Edge data, but the speeds are really slow. I'm starting to think the modem band (850hz?? or 1200hz??) in the MIUI rom is not well suited to my network carrier.
Anyway, my question is -- Is it possible to flash an Australian modem for the MIUI rom i'm currently running?
The ROM i'm running is the one in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992251
I'm running it with the Glitch Kernel - V9B.
I realise these CM7/MIUI roms are not really based on Samsung firmware, but I can't tell if they are good for Australian network carriers. The modem I would want to flash are either 'UGJL2' or 'UGKC1'. (both for American/Australian locality).
Apart from my 3g data speed, the phone is phenomenal -- especially after I overclocked to 1.2Ghz.
Btw, this is my first post but i've been visiting these forums almost daily since August 2010. I've tried searching but just cant find the answer
Cheers!
Hmm i dont think u can use UGJL2 nor UGKC1 but i could be wrong.
U should backup ur rom in recovery and try it out.
If u flash the modem from odin or recovery and cant boot into miui after then reinstall the miui rom and see if it works and if it dos then restore ur rom.
I am 90% sure u cant brink it that way.
Or meby someone else has a better idea?
Edit : overclocking to 1.2 dont it drain up power quicker?
Hey thanks for your reply.
I tried a number of different roms -- firstly I tried flashing Froyo and GB roms. They all caused my phone to not detect any network carriers and also triggered a reboot after 5 minutes of running.
Turns out you can't just flash any modem you want based on Samsung Roms if you are using a CyanogenMod build. You need to use the ones listed on this site: sourceforge.net/projects/teamhacksung/files/galaxys/
After trying some different modems, it turns out it's just this sim card my company gave me -- I don't think it's setup correctly for data. I will be calling them to sort it out.
I tried a SIM card from another australian carrier - Optus - and it works quite nice and fast.
In regards to OC to 1.2Ghz, I have not so far noticed an increase in battery drain. Speaking purely in numbers, it surely must use more juice. I charge the phone each night while I sleep so in the morning it's always 100% -- with this routine, the performance boost is fantastic and i'm not impacted otherwise.
Cheers.
if you are overclocking, you could try a little undetvolting too, this will keep the performace but decrease the battery consumption,
it can make ya battery last a little longer
also, i use JVO modem for MIUI, and i must admit its the best modem i have tried, always full signal with data and wifi, perhaps you could give that one a try.
its also been reported to increase battery life (as the phone is not constantly searching for a better signal)
I just did a clean re-install of the latest MIUI -- MCGv3.11 & Glitch-V9C-D
It came with the JVO modem, which was a little bit better than before.
Afterwards I installed the CM7 KC1 Modem and it's flying! It's too early to comment on battery life but others say its decent.
The KC1 modem is recommended for anyone running 850Hz band in America, Canada or Australia.
As for the UV, I was not able to get a stable 1.2Ghz OC without -75 UV. So I figure that's a good thing for my battery life
Could u link the overclocking and undervolting guide as i would like to try it ou ?
each kernel responds differently to undervolting / overclocking so its up to you to find the best set up.
download pimp my cpu and toggle between settings till you find the right one.
when i OC'd i used Tk-Glitch kernel overclocked to 1.2ghz and undervolted 250mv and that was awesome speed with better battery life

Ok nvm the links i found it and done it.
altho i had my phone meltdown and freeze when doing -50mhv and -75 as well so i left it at 0 this time and its faster but still same bat drain tho.
you need to set the overclock at boot, so the phone is always running at whatever you select.
i tried putting mine at 400mhz when in standby but the phone would never wake up
oh man i installed the overclocking and now i cant call and when trying to setup my carrier it said i had to insert the sim
I think i am sticking to the normal speedmod kernal
I've had my captivate for over a year now, with mixed results.
Honestly i love the phone, and if i could work out my issues, probably can go another year without having to get a new phone.
My biggest problems are the battery, and the bugs.
When i bought my phone my battery life was ok. When i finally put a custom rom on and re-calibrated my battery, i would go as far as to say it was pretty good. (I even have a screen shot from the good ol days when i would go to work, and come home, and it would say something like - unplugged for 11 hours, and i would be at ~70 percent)
Now on an average day, i leave for work at about 630 and when i get out at 2 its usually down to 20-30 percent. I actually own 2 captivates and its the same case with both of them.
I dont understand what is different now from before. Ive actually tried the old roms which i got such good battery life from (serendipty 6.2 i think, and cognition) and still its terrible now.
I have recently used apex, cyanogenmod, miui, GR12, and maybe a few other, all with terrible battery and bugs.
Thats the next issue, the bugs are getting to a point where the phone is almost unusuable.
Many times google voice has just failed on me. Ill get out of work and see no texts, my data will work, so i figured theres no problem, but then ill restart my phone and everything will come in.
Im currently using apex, so thats my biggest problem with bugs, but cyanogenmod/miui were really bad.
Then theres the ugly, which is when my battery goes in super drain mode. Itll go down 1 percent every 2-3 mins sometimes, and the only way to halt the super drain is to plug it in for a few mins
I dont get what the difference is from then to now, but i was wondering if anyone else experiences these issues.
Maybe its the way im flashing or something, i dont really know anymore.
Any suggestions?
Have you seen which process/app is eating your battery? Could possibly be an app from market causing this
what is it you need from a custom rom? i've found i get the best battery life and stability from stock samsung roms, ie KH3. CM7 was wiped about 15 minutes after flashing.. it seems very experimental on the captivate, definitely no way i'd be able to use that as a daily rom
I had the same issue when i was using CM7. more battery drain on standby. Now i m using KH3, there is no battery drain on standby.
Try KH3 based ROM, if you are losing battery on standby
Well havent tried a KH3 rom yet, but i think apex is js7 based, which is an official rom.
I agree CM7 was very buggy, but ive seen the same with apex.
Honestly I used to get awesome battery life with cognition, and i reflashed that same rom, and now it sucks.
The only apps i have installed are:
adobe reader
beautiful widgets
colornote
docs 2 go
google voice
maps
pandora
screenshot
titanioum backup
zeam launcher
My biggest reasons for using a custom rom are:
tethering
adblocking
not as laggy (RFS)
screenshots
maybe a few more
I would glady give it up though if i could get some good battery life, and no bugs.
Am i better off just going back to stock jf6 and letting my phone update automatically?
Or should i try out a kh3 based rom? or just KH3 Stock?
i'm getting the best battery life from kh3. js7 is an i9000 rom that is not specifically optimized for the captivate so it may not be as good as kh3. regarding reasons for custom roms, i have all of that (except RFS) on the stock rom using these apps: adfree, screenshot er, open garden wifi tether -- all work great
Js7 is froyo.
apex is jvr gingerbread.
Both I9000 firmware.
Idk what you mean by "optimized for our device" but let me just say from personal experience that porting I9000, we don't just grab a firmware and theme it. There is coding to make it work. Plus I9000 has this thing called SOURCE CODE so that you can have a much more customizable kernel, instead of the time it takes to reverse engineer a kernel and then try to add things to it.
All in all custom roms will always be better than stock, because they take stock and improve on it. Also there is no such thing as bug free as every one uses their phone differently with different apps that may effect the phone in odd ways. You will have to just experiment and see what works best for you and your phone.

i don't see how a modified i9000 (J**) rom/kernel could ever have better battery life or general stability than a stock K** rom on the captivate. the way i look at it, there is a great value in having root on the phone, but not so much in having a custom rom. i just haven't stumbled on any rom that will give me a better experience than stock while at the same time keep the battery life. i've tried quite a few.
this is coming from a standpoint where battery life and stability are a priority
Hi,
I have a SGN and CM10 nightly, and updating daily.
The only bad thing for me in this JB based ROM is the heat and the battery drain (almost can see the energy flying away the battery )
As I have been reading a little bit, I think, and please correct me if I'm wrong, that the KERNEL can change some equipment behavior...
Question:
Do I have to stay with the kernel of the nightlys?
If not, what options do I have, and what are the main differences between them?
If I change it, do I have to re-flash it every time I update to the new nightly?
According to your help... I'LL BE BACK!!!!
Thanks a lot

The new cm10 kernel uses updated Mali display drivers. Currently there are no alternative kernels with these drivers so you're stuck with the stock one.

I guess you have a rogue app misbehaving. I can clearly remember when I had this problem as well: battery drain and heat.
You might install the following 2 apps, to see whether your device enters deep sleep, if you already haven't.
- better battery stats (1.11)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15869868 and
- CPUSpy (0.5.19 beta)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28045183
Then, after you checked "deep sleep or not?", you could go to this thread concerning wake locks&battery life, a very informative thread by ahalford - and he is being very helpful!

whenever i use my phone while charging it is so slow and the cpu goes to 1000mhz its not even useable no matter what i try to do it does not stick i never changed the temp settings there is no option for that and the cpu only reaches 120f i dont know what to do it never did this before and now it does thank you

Unless there are some apps in the background going crazy i`d say it may be hardware related and you should claim warranty. Install GSam battery monitor (or similar app) and CPU Spy for more info mate about whats going on on your phone. Never xperience this issue you discribe.
ive tried everything im on clean rom with lean kernel ive switched roms/kernels and still same thing

Do/did you have this issue with stock too?
not that i can remember just started doing this about a week ago im going to put it back to stock and see if it fixes it
Try a different cable.
Hi
There is a wierd problem withy battery usage
On stock factory image
On pure Nexus ROM
And with elemen x kernel
I have this problem
My system UI is on top of battery usage
What should I do?
Thanks
Install better battery stats and see what app is offending the system. Otherwise clean flash and try again to see if the same problem still exists. Also stay on the Purenexus kernel to see if the problem is still there. Hopefully that should identify the wakelock.

i changed to stock
with stock kernel
clean install
and the problem still there
That's what better battery stats would tell you to localise the issue and this would require a days observation and so on. Try different gapps packages perhaps but I wouldn't know specifically what your issue would be.
