MAG2GA rev6 what is safe for me to install to emmc? - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been attempting to sort through all the information but, have come to a standstill. I have the MAG2GA rev6 emmc. I have heard that rev 5 is the one to worry about but I wanted to double check.
I am looking to install CM10.2 to EMMC, is this safe?
Is using trim safe?
I have heard mention of a special kernel made by verygreen that incorporates a patch from the nexus 7 is this something I would need?

That patch is now part of CM10.2 stable. No one has reported a brick since he did that. But that does not mean it won't happen.

Certain batches of the Nexus 7 contained the same faulty Samsung eMMC. Google engineers patched it up. Verygreen viewed the fix and implemented it for CM 10.2.
No one has report a brick for months now. Seems to be safe.

Help with compiling CM10.1 and Onskreen Cornerstone
I'm interested in using cornerstone with my nook hd + as well as nook hd. (if possible I'd prefer to build in windows, but I don't have to)
I found this guide
http://www.kernel-xp.net/index.php/en/guide/25-android/32-build-cm10
actually, maybe I'll use this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36416819#post36416819
which I guess doesn't show me how to use 10.1, but I can start with 10.
but the real question remains (and maybe I'll need to reach out to those that have done it already). Is how do I implement cornerstone into the mix?
Well. For starters, where would I find the drivers for the nook hd+.
I think I found a website for it,
https://nookdeveloper.zendesk.com/entries/21943338-nook-developer-sta
but I'm not sure exactly which one I'm supposed to plug into the tutorial guide.
Then after that I think I can figure out the rest until I need some instructions on how to implement the Cornerstone
Verygreen has a CM10 git repository all set up for the HD+. And he has build instructions for Linux. Look here:

is there a link for 10.1 build instructions? Although I guess I said that wasn't so important...
so there we have it, I have a set of instructions for installing cm10 with correct drivers (possibly...), but how about implementing cornerstone... I know such person probably doesn't have experience with it, but I'm certainly going to get stuck on that part. I wrote a rom writer who wrote a rom with it included, but no word as of yet.

No. You can download the git by using the - CM10.1 line instead of - jellybean. That will get you the upstream repository, but verygreen has not yet published his local manifest. For overall info on building, go to the cyanogenmod site and search their wiki for building. They at least have a guide for the Nook Color and the Nexus 7. They may have more.

how to backup before upgrading rom?

so i have a HD+ (don't think this matters) running hybrid, 4/22 10.1 build. there have been some updates to the 10.1 recently, my question is do i need to do anything to back up my current apps/settings before upgrading? will my things still be there after i update?
doesn't seem like it would be, but who knows. thanks

Do the latest cm10.1 roms i.e 11/5 and 12/5 work with your Hybrid method? Because I thought I read somewhere in your hybrid thread that they wouldn't work

Custon Kernel on a N2ACARD setup?

Hi there, I have a Nook HD+ with CM10.1 running out of a sd card I got from NCACARD
I am very happy with my setup, however I'd like to install a kernel that would allow me to overclock the cpu a bit. The kernel that comes in the card doesnt alow for ovecloking.
What are my options to do this? what kernel should I flash? do I just flash it in CWMR?
I am very experinced in flashing roms/kernels/radios/rpm etc into my GSIII but I am new to the nook business.
Thanks for any help.
If you can find an overclocked kernel that is for the Nook HD+ and has been set up for flashing with CWM on SD, you can do it. But I doubt you are going to find such a thing.

[Q] Nightly CM10.2 Build Info?

How could I find info related to each CM10.2 nightly build for Nook HD+?
I would like to know what change(s) are in each build so that I could either update it or just skip it.

IF you have CM10.x already installed, just go into settings -- about tablet -- cyanogenmod updates
Then click on the available update for a changelog.
This will list both cm10.1 and 10.2 nightlies and the changelogs!

If you're running a nightly earlier than 8-16 for 10.2, you should update immediately to avoid getting bitten by a likely firmware bricking bug.

verygreen says he thinks he has a workaround for the firmware bug in the Samsung emmc. Luckely, I have the SEM32G (sandisk) emmc which doesn't seem to be affected. It seemed to be a bit snappier running a ROM with TRIM activated.

Here's how to find out which part your Nook uses:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44823487&postcount=210
Mine's affected by the emmc bricking bug, and I've used LagFix three or four times on CM10.1 without problems. Guess I can consider myself lucky.

How do we know if we have the faulty emmc?

you are welcome my friend
I was under the impression that the emmc check app from the play store was only meant for finding out the type of NAND device inside your Nook. IIRC, The actual sanity check performed by it is for a different (older) type of emmc brick bug and not the current TRIM related brick that could be observed in some CM 10.2 builds, which had TRIM enabled. So I wouldn't conclude yet, that your device is safe ... Better cross check the NAND type with the CM wiki article. (Sorry I don't have the link at hand. Just google it.)

The eMMC that has the bug is named MAG2GA.
I have this one too, but I'm running the TRIMfix Kernel for testing.

Yes, it's perfectly fine for you to run CM10.2 with no problems. Your device does not have the chip with the issue.
Your chip is: SEM32G, not MAG2GA. The MAG2GA chip is the one specifically with the issue.
All the best.

Just got my refurbished Nook HD+. Does it have to be rooted to get the correct information? I have made a backup of my stock and installed the emmc check from the Play store and it is saying I have the affected chip. This was done while running stock.
So if I have the affected chip, what exactly does that mean? I was planing on running CM 10.1.3 on it which I think is not affected. Will my device get slow as the memory fills up?

If you're going to run CM 10.1.3-stable, you're good to go. You don't have to worry about anything.
If however, you're planning to install CM 10.2 or decide to upgrade to it; you may have issues with the performance being degraded, as CM 10.2 is based on Android 4.3; and 4.3 introduced a new way of managing storage, using something called TRIM in attempt to increase performance.
If you upgrade to CM 10.2, and then revert back to Stock ROM, or CM 10.1.3 (or any other ROM), you will still notice the issues; as your hardware has been affected. If you try to install the TRIM kernel, that could also brick your device.
I'd only install CyanogenMod 10.1.3 (stable) and stick to it. Perhaps in the future we could solve this EMMC TRIM hardware issue; as the 2012 Nexus 7 uses the same chip, and it's been patched via a software update. In the future, perhaps we could port that patch onto the Nook.
Again, for now CM 10.1.3 is your best route.
All the best.
Even if you run CM10.1.3, you can still get lag, which is what TRIM is supposed to fix (TRIM is a repair utility, not a new way of storage). It makes no difference which you run, CM10.1.3 or CM10.2, it is possible to get lag. The difference between the two is CM10.2 has the TRIM utility built in and CM10.1.3 does not.
That said, I run CM10.1.3 and have never experienced lag. But I have a SEM32G chip too (not an buggy chip). However, many users have reported lag on CM10.1.3. Since TRIM is not built in, they run the TRIM app from the Play Store. And if they have the affected chip, some have reported a brick.

Hello guys,
I just discovered this thread and it seems that I got a bad chip (MAG2GA). Unfortunatly I installed CM 10.2 (20131106-NIGHTLY) the day I got the tablet (last week). So far I am pretty happy with the tablet but sometimes some apps are crashing. Most of the time it is chrome but not exlusivly.
Should I go back to 10.1 because of the memory chip i got? Should I send the tablet back and ask for a different device? This could be costly because I ordered in the USA but live in Germany.
Will future updates fix the problems? I planed to use the tablet at least for two years and so future updates should be possible for my tablet.
Thanks for your responses, best whishes.
So my chip is the supposed bad one. I am on liquid 4.3 and honestly it runs better than it did stock. I don't have any random errors or anything. Should I not be on any 4.3 ROM even though it says my chip is sane?

Supposedly brand new but with a MAG2GA chip. Should I be angry? If it has that chip is actually a refurb being sold as new?

No, they have stacks of these things they are trying to get rid of. They over ordered months ago and are trying to reduce inventory to improve their financial position. That's why the lowered prices. I don't think they are making any new ones.

If the revision number is the actual problem, then I should be OK as I have an 06. Need to try the trim command and see what happens.

I am on 10.1.3 and I ran that program and have the MAG2GA and under the Brick Bug? it lists No. Sane Chip.
I guess the program is wrong. lol
The brickbug app is not checking for the mag2ga chip as being faulty as that's not what it was designed for.
What if you have the bad chip?
If you do have the affected chip, any predictions on what the future looks like? Are these the only rays of hope:
1) Someone ports the Nexus 7 patch to 10.2
2) Google integrates the patch logic into android core 4.4 so CM11 might be safe on Nooks?
It sounds like stock nook OS is based on 4.0.3... so doesn't sound like B&N is too hungry to push the stock OS past this barrier.
