Oleophobic cover on new display after repair - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
i have had, and still have, quite a few issues with my HTC one but im very stubborn so ill stick with this phone cause i really love it. I had the issue with the camera, sent it to service and it came with 1 dead pixel. Sent it back and came untouched cause they have minimum 2 dead policy. Argued with them over phone and convinced them to exchange the display. Sent it and came back with 2 dead pixels . Ok now the pixels are visible on white and they dont bother me that much but the screen is not as smooth as the old one. Its hard to explain but the swipe is not feeling the same.... I was reading and seems that smoothness is given by the oleophobic cover which its probably is missing. So my question is .. is there any way to test this. I really want to avoid sending it back to service again.

I am currently really interested in a Diamond, however the thread Oily liquid underneath screen - from nowhere kinda make me reconsidering it. Because of that I contacted HTC and received a surprisingly quick reply, stating that nearly every device sent in had a physical damage
Dear Sir, I can confirm that this fault is normally caused by physical damage to the device. Nearly every single device we have repaired with this fault has had some form of physical damage that has led to the fault. Of course the few that haven't were repaired under warranty. I quote directly from our repair centre: This issue is caused by air/liquid entering the LCD layer, and is nearly always OOW (Out Of Warranty) as it can only be caused by excess pressure on the screen. As long as you look after the device, and take care of it, this issue is unlikely to affect you. We have numerous Touch Dimonds here in our support centre, around 3 or 4 for each language we support, and not one of them have displayed this issue.

Today I took a look at some models on display in several stores and except for one all showed the same effect described in this thread. However I have to admit that this might not be the perfect example for a comparison as those poor phones probably not get treated extremely well in stores.
So I hope to find out with this poll how many people really have got this issue, respectively how many of them can explain it with too much pressure.

I had exactly the same problem. Just went back to T-Mobile Netherlands, and they admitted directly that this is a common issue. They repaired it under warranty conditions at no fee at all. They just replaced the entire screen and luckily I've never faced the problem again.
Also, when the oilish liquid was there, the screen alignment was always a little outlined, and when you tap the slylus on that spot you can hear a strange hard "click".

I've got it on my 7 month old diamond - screen works ok, but tapping it isn't soft like it used to be. Not a bad enough problem to send it back and be without a phone for a couple of weeks, or risk being charged for!

Those who voted the third option, are you definitely sure it couldnt have come from too much pressure - maybe unnoticed in the pockets?

Hi Lutent, I can honestly say I don't believe I've put any abnormal amount of pressure on the screen - I'm pretty careful with the phone, it doesn't have a single scratch on it yet.
What is strange though, is that I've just tried to take a photo of the liquid for you, but it has completely disapppeared!
The only reason I can think of for this is that it hasn't been in my pocket all morning so will be cooler than usual. Also it doesn't show up so much in daylight - I'll have a look later tonight and see if I can photograph it

I have the same issue. mine covers 50 % of the screen.
Whats funny is that its exactly right smack in the middle of the screen
its like a zoom box of the screen.
It appeared suddenly and all my touch screen alignments runs as well.
didnt have time to send for warranty until recently.
have sent it in now currently waiting for repairs to complete.
so far no news about if its OOW

Had this problem for some short time, the touchscreen has become hard to handle, as it's not very precise in the area of the "liquid spot", covering 1/9 of the center of the screen. Have no clue of where it came from.
Just sent an mail to the store, demanding replacement refering to this as a common problem after doing some reseach at different forums online.

Same problem with my HTC Fuze. It looked perfect. Never dropped. Made call. Looked good. Pulled it out 5 minutes later...the square was there. (I had just flown from Atlanta to LAX...I wonder if atmosphere had anything to do with it???)
Definitly a defect in design.
PS...The letter they sent is BS. It's not the LCD but the touchscreen. The touchscreen is touching the LCD...in my case anyway.
You will probably also notice a slight curvature of the touchscreen down toward the LCD if you look closely.
The reason they don't want to repair them is because this is the most time consuming repair. The phone has to be completely disassembled to attach the cable.
I am really pissed. i had liquid under the display just two days after I bought it.
I am super careful with all my electronic devices and not once did I have to send in any device to get it repaired.
the D2 was also always in the leather pouch.
For some reason, initially the oily liquid disappeared and I could keep on using it, however not it is there permanently and when I called the warranty place, they said that most likely I will have to pay for the repair as displays are not covered by warranty.
I am really pissed and would recommend buying a different phone. Sooner or late I bet everyone will have this problem. It happened to me after just two days, I can not imagine it to last 2 years or so...
Sigh... same issue here. I just bought a TP from a good friend of mine who is exceptionally carefull with his phones and I've just noticed a big part of the screen (1/4) being full with the Newton Rings.

[Q] Dark Stripe on AMOLED Screen

Just got my Captivate, the screen is beautiful, but this has been bothering me ever since I got the device.
It's just a dark, skinny, blurry vertical stripe that comes up form the bottom of the screen. It's really only visible when a solid color is being displayed in that area.
I hope you guys know what I'm talking about because apparently I can't post pictures.
What is this? LCDs get dead/stuck pixels and AMOLEDs get this?
Is there any way to fix this using software? Like those stuck pixel fixer apps for LCDs?
if u just got it return it for another one, why whould u accept something thats obviously broken
Definitely a problem. My screen has always appeared just fine, and never with any sort of vertical stripe or other artifact like you've described.

There's a couple scratches on the back of the phone. Does that matter? Will they take it back?
Id raise hell till they took it back. One of the main selling points of the Galaxy S phones is the screen..Hows a ****ty screen gonna look for PR on a brand new phone??
Id say take it back..if they dont take it, make sure you have the accidential warrenty and tell em it went for a swim..theyll prolly give you a refurb sooooo...might wanna thing about that as well.

Weird I have the exact same issue. its a darkish line on the left side of my screen that almost goes the whole length of the screen, it really is only visible on a solid gray background but its definitely annoying.
I was just kind of dealing with it, but now you're making me want to see if i can exchange it.
Never dropped my phone or bumped it in to anything either.
Ill probably go to ATT tomorrow and see what they can do, Ill show them this thread as well.
The AMOLED screens are meant to be notorious for color sticking. If you use your phone as an always on desk clock, music player with screen on etc , you stand a chance of burning colors (dimming the specific LED's), resulting in a faded vertical/ horizontal line where the taskbar would be.
Might not be the case, but worth looking into. And if its a brand new unit, replace it.
I had this happen with a Captivate that had never been dropped I think it was a crack in the LED behind the glass, they replaced it no questions asked it was 3 weeks old. If you are within 30 days take it back.
You have a one year warranty - take it back to AT&T at any time.

[Q] Question about display

Hey everybody, well I just got my pair of tangerine Google Glass this morning and am currently running the set up and update to xe12. During both of which I can see about 5 lightly colored white specks on the right hand side of the screen. Is this normal or can anyone else explain why they are there? I called glass support and asked and Chris answered that they may just be from shipping so I wiped all sides of the prism with a clean micro fiber cloth and I can still see them. They almost look like stars in the distance if that makes sense. Anyway I also asked about the protective film that is installed on booth the front and back of the prism and Chris said those are suppose to stay on and are permanent so I shouldn't remove those. Any ideas would be appreciated. It's not a huge deal but still something I noticed right away. Kind of like dead pixels on a cell phone or tablet display.
I didn't have it but I went in for a fitting a few weeks ago and it still feels like it was just a blur

Yep that's exactly what they are... dead pixels. My Glass has two from what I can see and they are along the bottom. Now when I first noticed and contacted Glass support I was told since the 2 dead pixels were not interfering with the function of Glass and I could still very clearly see the display, that it was not enough to warrant a swap. This being a beta or prototype, it won't be perfect so unless it hinders you from using Glass you may not be able to swap. I'm hoping my hardware swap will be flawless ?

Thanks for your reply. I've actually decided to return my pair of Glass for primarily battery life concerns and actual use case scenario's. I've found that instead of Glass being a companion to my cell phone it has really become just another separate entity and that is usefulness in my everyday life doesn't currently justify the $1,700 I spent. The battery drain and drop overnight for unknown reasons is very troubling and needs to be addressed before a consumer release. 3-4 hours of real world use just isn't enough for me. Anyways good luck to the rest of you explorers out there and I'm sure I'll be rejoining the forums after the retail release. That is as long as the price is reasonable enough and my issues have been addressed from the pre-release version.

I've found the same to be true. The entire left side of glass is empty, why not have a battery on that side... I think years from now they'll be selling dual display glass, where the left would display one set of info, and the right could have another. It's so early though, there's not even an option to look at a "photo" app. I think the entire setup needs a little rethinking. Why not have an "APP" card where you can scroll through apps? and a "Gallery" app where you can see photos/videos you've taken, once the cards have gone so far you've lost that picture completely unless you connect to a PC or use your phone.
Lot's of things simple things like displaying date/weather on the main screen or controlling brightness manually aren't even options?!? I see this going another route once it gets out of the hands of the current folks at Google, it's like Android is one way, and Glass is a totally different entity itself at this point...
Getting my $1,620 back and buying some parts for my Mustang! Good luck explorers, I've had fun but it's just not there yet.

First, you shouldn't lie about something being wrong with your phone to get a replacement for normal wear and tear. Second, maybe take better care of your phone so it doesn't get beat up. But if you want to do it so bad, just deal with whatever kind of phone you get.

And yes, unless they do not have any refurbished at hand, which is pretty much never, you will get refurbished.
I echo the above. Don't lie to get a phone replaced for wear and tear.
And yes, the phones are refurbs. Even if they don't have an identical refurb (same Moto Maker selections) they will ask you to accept a slightly different color before they offer you a new phone. Refurbs fall into a couple categories... primarily they are going to be 1) phones that were purchased and returned or 2) phones that were sent in for a warranty repair and replaced with another refurb. The first category is typically going to be free from wear and tear, but is often prone to minor defects like screen calibration issues, gaps in the body, etc... things that picky people would return the phone for. The second category will likely not have those issues, but will instead have wear and tear like minor surface scratches.
I have used my phone Insurance many many times back when I soft bricked my phone and had no clue how to return it back to stock. the best way to do it is to say that your phone is lost not stolen then you will be able to keep the one handset and then get a new one and they will ask you if you find your old phone to please return it but you and I both know that will never happen two phones are better than one. If you say your phone is stolen they will block your phone just tell them it is lost. And it sounds like you need one of those gigantic spongebob OtterBox cases.

I'd say it depends on how rare your phone design is. If you have black and black they'll probably give you a refurbished. If you have an odd combination then they'll probably make you a new one. I did an advanced exchange for a brick when upgrading and I got a new one (black with slate back 32gb). Although the top grill was loose and I had to glue it back. I wouldn't worry about nicks though. I've had mine for about three weeks and it's starting to look just like the old one. If you have issues then send it back otherwise it really isn't worth it.

Didn't know so many people were boy scouts about such a insignificant thing ....only considered because my warranty goes out it October why not take advantage and just get a new one but otherwise no I take good care of mine as all my phones it still looks great I'm just worried about getting screen burn in and other hardware problems after warranty is done

Screen burn in is not a hardware problem. It's normal wear and tear on an AMOLED display. Each display may be more or less susceptible to it, but given the right use pattern every AMOLED screen is going to develop burn in. If you wanted to avoid it you should have bought a phone with an LCD.
And it is significant because fraudulent warranty claims drive up prices across the board.
I know its not a hardware thing, I've gotten my answer anyway
I think that if you have insurance you should use it you are paying for the service and when your new phone arrives you also pay for the deductible. If there's a way to get something free or close to nothing in this world I will do it. I'm sorry that the majority of the community doesn't feel the same

anyone experience popping noise when pressing note 9 screen?

Got a Note 9 last week and day after receiving it i noticed when holding the note 9 and pressing on screen in certain areas (near sides/corners/centre) it would make a popping noise, sounds like adhesive behind the screen not adhering properly or something like that. I got Samsung to replace with a brand new one and same thing with this one, it happens whether phone is on or off, it's definitely not rite as you can hear it very clearly, feels like some flex going on in screen when it happens as i can feel the screen kind of dip slightly when it makes the noise, but ok when it does not make the noise.
Curious to see if anyone else have had the same issue? gutted as loved it for the short while i had it but sending second one back now for refund as worried something will happen with screen further down the road and Samsung may not cover it. I know of at least 3 others who had this issue when buying same time as me.

have no problem with that.
only have that popping sound when using tempered glass before. changed to plastic screen protector and no sound anymore

Hey thanks for sharing that. This is the first link I got searching for this, I have it happen to mine note 9 too. It's such a bummer since I had it for only three days and will have to setup a new one from scratch if they have to replace it.
are you sure the s-pen isnt vibrating when you tap it on that side? remove the s-pen and tap it. i bet it goes away
Wow. No issues like that. I've had three Note 9s and all three have been perfect. I'd definitely return for a replacement. Weak or loose glue could seriously affect the water resistance, since it depends on a water tight seal between the screen and the frame. I'd never recommend using your phone in water anyway, but I at least like the assurance that if my phone takes an accidental dip. There's a good chance it will survive.

Yep real shame, my replacement was the same to, it's on way back, getting a refund, not worth risking something going wrong with the screen later down the road, i mean manufacturers do anything to not accept responsibility specially when it comes to screens. First one started on second day, it was great for the first day, replacement was doing it from the moment i took it out of packaging and holding it, it was worse than the first one.

After studying the noise a bit more, it is definitely an issue with the glue. It will not happen all the time I press the screen, but it happens more often when the phone is a bit warm to the touch (e.g. charging the battery). Also, it appears to be along the side where the battery resides - I wouldn't worry about the battery itself, it just makes sense that the glue will get loose where it heats up more often (in my case, I don't stress the phone all that often for the other side where the SoC is to play a role). Anyways I'll be returning it tomorrow once the shops here in Berlin open 'cause now it's christmas break.
One extra thing that might be interesting, the back-side also has some sort of a glass-separation issue, at least it looks like that. Notice the circular smudge around and right of the DUOS label - I tried cleaning it but it comes back, I think the glass is separated at that point too, but just a tiny bit. I've had the phone for four days and haven't dropped/hit/scratched it AFAIK.

i agree with you, seems to be adhesive/glue issue, it did not happen all the time for me either but as you mention it, i noticed it more after recharging (when phone gets warm) so think you nailed the issue on the head to be honest.
I noticed it around the sides (edges) and the centre of screen, second one was even worse much more noticeable and was happening straight away after taking it out of box.
Something i noticed but never mentioned as wasn't sure but second one was the same, maybe it's normal but don't think it is, on the curved corners of the screen it appeared to me the screen looked slightly lifted not flush with the frame but only on corners.
I live in the UK btw. I was thinking a bad batch but seeing Samsung had a good deal on with cashback and discount i imagine they sold allot between the time i arranged to send mine back to getting the replacement which was a week so i imagine they would have been separate batches although i could be wrong.

I bought it directly from the Samsung online uk store. There was a discount direct from Samsung for students/people who work in certain industries so it could be bought for £699 (£200 off), but also they were offering £150 cashback bringing total down to £549, plus cashback by going via a cashback website meant i would have had it for around £504, also they were doing trade in so people could get even more off up to another £150.00 bring cost down to £399, then people got the samsung game deal thingy, don't play games myself but people can get a Fornite theme by downloading Fornite playing 3 games then you get the free theme, kids going bonkers for the theme, people selling the theme upto £100. So people could have the phone at a bargain price.
So I got a replacement, and just as you said, the display had the same popping sound out of the box. It happens like once a day, but since there is really no substitute for this device right now (stylus + good DAC, besides all the other great features), I'll keep using it and if it gets worse contact Samsung down the line for warranty/replacement. Decided to leave this as information if some other person happens to have the same problem in the future.

feel for you, such a shame and disappointing to happen a second time, it's a great phone, i did not want to risk it so sent second one back too. Fingers crossed you won't have any issues. Mine was happening regularly so like you say just keep an eye on it.
I don't have that issue even with the tampered glass on my phone.

i actually noticed it a few times.. like last night it was doimg it. sort of right above where the keyboard is in portrait mode..
it seems to happen when its really cold outside for me.. its not enough for me to have it replaced thankfuly
I can replicate this when I clean my screen with a microfibre cloth. It happens on pretty much all of the screen. I believe I can also see some light streaks in the screen when this happens. The popping sound happens regardless of the temperature of the phone. Will have to inspect it more to see if I can spot any other issues with the screen. I got mine in the UK just over a week ago. Apart from that I think the phone has been great so far. Not sure whether to replace it.
glad i sent mine back now to be honest, personally i would send back, as you say everything else is great apart from the screen popping sound. The worry for me is the screen might cause issues further down the road, screens are the biggest issue with mobile phones and manufacturers are quick to blame user and deny warranty.

My Unlocked US Note 9 does it too. Mine mainly does it on the right side near the middle. It's not enough for me to warrant sending it back; it still works fine and I don't see any screen issues when pressing on the screen. Also I bought mine used so I'm guessing the screen was replaced. If it gets worse, I guess I'll fix it then.
