After reading some of the reviews, this phone is supposed to have some kind of face detection mode for taking pictures of yourself. When the rear camera detects your face, the power button is supposed to flash green so you know to take the pic. I can't seem to get that feature to work. Also you are supposed to be able to use the volume button as a shutter button as well but it also doesn't work for me. All it does is zoom in and out when I'm in the camera app.
Go to camera, then settings, then focus, and select auto detect

Worked. Thanks!
Welcome, also change the volume key from zoom to capture. That's also done in settings

As above, I'm trying to find a good camera app for the DHD that lets you take Self-portraits using either the volume key as the shutter or by touching anywhere on the touch screen or similar.
Most phones now have no physical shutter button so I wanted to find an app for this purpose for taking Self-portraits if there is one? so far I have tried apps such as Volume Key Camera but it just force closes. I'm aware there are apps for the iphone that let you tap anywhere on the screen to take a shot so was hoping there is similar or using the volume key for the DHD.
Any help would be appreciated thanks.
Have a mirror in front you your phone screen while taking a picture.

Your right that probably is the best way although was hoping there is an app that lets you tap any part of the screen or use the volume key to take shots.
You already have self portrait function in htc camera. It automatically takes photo when it sees face. Works great for me.

There is an app called "Sensor Camera" that will allow you to turn the shutter sound off amongst other useful things like using the volume key as the shutter as opposed to the touch screen.
It has been a little buggy for me though, so I would like to hear other non-root suggestions as well.
Anyone know how to do this?
I cant take a under water photo because touch screen dont work on water.

you might confuse the poor guy with the actual zooming in the default camera app. abd_alazeez2002 meant the Camera Zoom FX app, which allows you to map hardware buttons (except for the power button) to camera functions.
I have the Vol down button as my shutter.

thx for the correction
Is it just me or my camera controls are always horizontal no matter the phone's orientation? I have to either focus somewhere or flip the phone to make it right.

The camera App has always started in the landscape position since I can remember back to the OG Evo no matter if the phone is held in portrait or not...If you ever take a photo in portrait that ends up in landscape you can simply rotate the photo in edit mode right from the gallery app
I have noticed this but if you hold in portrait mode and tap the screen to focus, it will kick it in portrait mode. The LTEVO was like that also.

I did a brief search but didn't find anything useful. Is there a way to turn off the shutter sound when taking a screenshot?

I read somewhere...Sprint required that the camera sound not be able to be turned off (i dont know if that is true with the screen capture too )...

Turning off your ringtone volume is the only way I can think of (on a stock phone at least.)

You can turn off the shutter sound for the camera on a stock sprint phone... it's in the camera's settings menu. not the screenshot sound though
