i will be getting my z1 this weekend and i would just like to ask for tips on checking the unit for the most common defects so that i can replace it on the spot. i've already read about the yellow tint defects, how can i quickly check it if the unit have it? i also read about old screen panels being used and how would i know if old panel is used on the unit? i would really appreciate for more tips on checking the unit so that i could save time for going to the store again for replacements.

If you have the opportunity to, then test sliding keyboards and apps that require scrolling. Test them with the phone in your hands and on a flat surface without touching the frames. If scrolling stutters or cuts off and if sliding keyboards don't work then that device could have a known problem with the touchscreen. You can also try the pattern lock to test for this.

@zhane0513 for the yellow hue, it is noticeable on the gray areas like the notification bar when you pull it down. It's yellowish than grayish. It's better also if you have other Xperia phones to compare it with like for example the demo unit of Z1 (provided that the demo unit doesn't have this issue) or any other Xperia unit that's on display.
Concerning the yellow hue: I've only realized that I have the yellow hue after I changed to a blue theme. It was definitely notable with a blue background

hello.
from about two weeks I have Xperia z
recently in the lower left corner of the screen, began to appear a strange spot (visible in bright background, such as the white
background, the stain is "yellowish" the gray background is just a bright spot;
becomes more evident usually after a while (after warming up?)
I called the sony hotline -do not know the problem
sometimes it does not resemble a known Xperia S issue ?
ps display mdy70, phone from orange
ps sorry for my English. it's not my native language

what is this Gray background?
did u use any app for screen test?
anyway use this code for testing screen quality;
*#*#7378423#*#*
i saw problem in some pixel with a screen test app> like dead pixel
but after i use stock android test menu i couldn't see any problem
:good:
thx for response.
the color is gray
jpg in full screen
* bottom of the screen is hidden from view by the buttons on the screen (in service mode) but the spot is still visible
the white screen (white board jpg / LCD test pro app) is a yellowish spot-intensity depends on the time you use the screen, after you turn on the phone after a long break the stain is very little visible
regards K.
Isn't that the yellow tint issue that the Xperia s suffered? You might need to get it exchanged if it doesn't go away.
As the phone gets heated up it causes the glue between the screen to melt? I forgot it was sth along those lines. Thought they fixed it.
Can you post the production date? Should be sth like 13w10 aac at the bottom of your phone.

hello after the break ...
today I received new c6603 from the operator- the same date of manufacture, the same lcd manufacturer (jdc) etc-but this time zero "bad" pixel(in previous I have 1), and at this moment no spot on screen...
in the previous xz -authorized sony service confirmed the presence of lcd defects.

Hi All,
I've just purchased an Xperia SP and I noticed something on the screen that makes me consider trying to return in, but I'm not sure whether this is actually a fault in the device or not.
I noticed that there are evenly spaced, faint lines running vertically across the screen from top to bottom. They are especially visible over light backgrounds, and although not that bad, they are definitely there. I compared the screen to that of my previous phone (Arc S) and it doesn't have these lines.
Could someone tell me whether the lines on my new phone warrant a replacement, or if this is the way it should look?
Thanks in advance!

Anyone having issues with their screens?
I have a red tint near the top right corner.. the bottom left is more bright than the top... it appears like a gradient accross the screen... noticable on dark greys... What should I do? is it a defect or are all devices like this?
Help please. any inputs will be appreciated.
How low is your brightness and is it set to adaptive?

The brightness is set to full, adaptive is off. When set to full, the tint is low but noticable.. when set to 50% the tint becomes more prominent.. and I do not have a problem with the tint.. it is just that it is not uniform.. the top right is tinted while the rest of the display is not.. it is really disturbing when reading an email or typing in landscape.
I think color uniformity issues are quite common on this device. You see some threads on reddit and also here on xda about this issue, most people have some sort of yellow or red tint on parts of their displays. The display of my Nexus 6 is a bit more yellow to the lower right of the screen, however I really only notice it on higher brightness with darker colors in apps like Google Camera or the Material Dark keyboard theme. It used to bug me in the beginning, but I somehow got used to it. I don't see the need for an RMA and get a potentially worse device with other defects as mine is perfect otherwise.

I was thinking the same.. it doesnt bug me that much. but when it comes to keyboard on landscape and specially the google camera dark grey background.. i can clearly see it... otherwise my device is perfect. I read a lot of articles too.. the device is expensive and at such a price getting a flawed display is unacceptable. My main question is are all amoleds like this.. because I had a galaxy s3 and it had a perfect display with no tint. Are all nexus 6's suffering from this problem or is it just a defective batch that is affecting some people. ? My device is just 2-3 day old so I can get a replacement.... although I am hesitant to do so..

I know the feeling, when my device was just a few days old I freaked out like this too. It's hard to justify at this price point but the truth is, no device is perfect. I went through several N5's back in the day and none of them were perfect, most of them had a few dead pixels, creaking body or even dust particles in the camera.
If you say your device is perfect otherwise, won't you rather live with such a small and hard to notice defect than going through a cycle of potentially worse devices? If you ask me, don't go for a replacement. But in the end it's up to you.
Getting a replacement.

Here my vendor is sending me a new device. A box packed one. It should arrive in 2-3 days. The tint on mine isn't noticable when the brightness is above 70% , but I cant use the phone continously at night at such high brightness. Besides the tint is so bugging me when reading anything.. browser, play books.. the uneven color temperature from top to bottom.. it is really annoying and considering that I have paid so much for this I wont settle for this. Lets see how the replacement is, I'll post when it arrives.
Got my replacement.
I got my replacement yesterday. THERE IS NO TINT. BUT. the display has a vertical band that is noticable at time. Well, I can put up with this atleast there is no uneven color anymore. I cannot describe how awesome it feels to use a flawless / near flawless display.
Hi guys, I'm facing a problem with me Z1 C6903 with S/N CB51xx which I guess it's packed with JDC panel and from what I've understand, are one of the worst kind for Z1.
The colors are way to washed out for my taste, even if I look at the display dead on. I hate this....I've played with "White balance" on different settings, but didn't find anything that could fix colors being washed out. It's like, the screen is to bright from the factory to compensate the sunlight visibility, which I understand, it's really nice, but consequently the saturation gets washed out. I don't know what SONY was thinking....Opticontrast my asssss, I WANT VIVID COLORS damn it
Is there any solution to this ? A tweak in the build.prop or something, a workaround ? I'm running stock 4.4.4 / 14.4.A.0.157 btw.
Thx!
I know it's not justice for comparing the IPS desktop PC display vs Z1 display (see screenshot attachment), but just to get the idea of what I'm talking about.
Well... I didn't knew about different panels packed with different S/N groups. I have one starting with the same S/N CB512xxxx and to be honest I can't say it's bad or defective or simple placebo effect. The only thing that I've noticed is even on the highest brightness settings, my Z1 is way darker than my sister's M2 Acqua.
If it's a hardware issue as you stated then the only thing we can do about is change the panel and digitizer...
Edit: I bought mine on Germany.
Seems some of users have this defect and it would be nice to see how many are affected, I know there's another thread but I felt this issue needed a proper poll.
I have it too, it's only noticeable on white or nearly white backgrounds like in the settings app, it's a slight yellow/Amber tint covering around 1/5 of the bottom part of the screen, starting gradually and ending at the bottom.
Take a quick look by opening the settings menu, and having a close look, it might not be noticeable at first.
it might not be noticeable with very high brightness
Please let us know if you have this issue.
I have a slight issue in the display where the top left corner seems distorted as if the display is getting folded.

I guess the quality control is somewhat sub par, I'm leaning towards not sending my unit in as everything else works fine, and the tinting is mostly not noticeable.
I guess they have some issues gluing the display into the frame and it gets slightly distorted.

Yep! It's minor issue and the phone is excellent otherwise which is why I too am not bothering with claims or anything as such.
I exchanged mine and got a nearly perfect screen,
What I would suggest is try to go to your local phone repair shop and ask them to put it under the Ultraviolet Light for 10 mins. It should help since phones use UV activated adhesive (LOCA/OCA)

How perfect is nearly perfect?
And how would the UV-light help the issue?
Even i changed mine n its 2nd n7p. Still the yellow tint is present on this one but little less than the previous one. So sticking with it.. may be some live display or configurable colour settings would help if Nokia (hmd) put it on android p.
Or even in further near update . Otherwise m going to nokia care next month. Lets see what happens

Mine looks like this, it's very slight, how does it compare to yours? I don't think I want to risk getting a replacement.
I have to say it looks worse on the picture than in real life.

Yes like this only but mine is little less. On the 1st one it was exactly the same as urs.. but now on 2nd one its half of that yellowish
I had this, exchanged, got a new one with slightly less of the issue but still present. It's slowly going away with time, think it may be similar to some phones in the past where the glue hadn't completely set and required some heat from the panel being on, or possibly UV from the sun, to go clear.
I have it, but it's only really noticable at very low brightness and on completely white backgrounds. Even then it's pretty subtle. Sad, that this "premium" midrange phone has such a problem.
I sent mine back, it was bugging me too much, I even took a measurement with my Spyder3 calibrator, and comparing the top and bottom portions of the screen, I measured a delta E of 7.41 on a perfect white background.
I'm no expert but according to wiki and other resources 2-5 already indicates that is a heavy discoloration and is perceived as another color/tone, so it definitely wasn't just in my eyes.
I will try my luck with another unit, and if it has the same issue I will just leave it be.
Do you still have the problem (as of July)?

As of July 2018, do the products still have this issue?
Thank you.
It is hardware issue some part of phones, software update is not a solution. You have lucky and get phone without it, or you are out of luck and get it with yellow tint. Simple.
