[Q] Motorola A855 viable?

Hello all, Quick question about the Motorola Droid. I have heard that this is/was a popular phone for custom ROMs. I found a new one locally for $40 and am thinking about purchasing it. I have am currently using a Galaxy S3 which has limited possibilities due to the know that came with 4.3 OTA. I also have been playing with a Samsung Charge but that never really had a lot of ROMs developed and traffic on that forum has come to a standstill.
So my questions, Does the the Motorola Droid forum still happening and functioning? Are there many custom ROMs to play with? A quick glance at post dates lead to mixed data.
Second, the phone I found was a A855 with slide out keyboard. When I see a reference to the 'Motorola Droid' or even the Motorola Droid 1' as in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098483 are they referring to the A855 or the A853 for even some other phone? Seems confusing.
Thanks for any help!
You know it was a great phone and still is (build quality, screen, qwerty, etc) but it is really outdated.
I mean RAM is the bottleneck of Android and this phone has only 256MB.
If you want a phone to mess around with it, then go ahead, if you need a qwerty Android phone, buy a Moto Photon Q.
Afaik, there are no active developer on the Droid (the development on the Milestone halted a year ago).
Btw, A855 is the NA edition but you can look it up on wikipedia.
It was a great phone while it lasted, and there are a ton of roms out there, but as far as I know there aren't any with active development. I still get mine out every once in a while to mess with, but it isn't really good for anything except a toy at this point.

My MiA retired.

After 2.5 years of using this great piece of hardware, I've moved on and got myself a Moto G.
During those years, I've dropped my Mi410 multiple times, drenched it in rain and manhandled it in many ways, but it never complained and always went strong. The only time I had to use another phone was when I had messed up a flashing and soft bricked it. After Spice service centre returned it without repairing, I, with the help of this great community and some crazy experimentations got it back to life.
Also, I've been using it without a screen guard for almost 2 years and not even a single scratch on its glass. Truly amazing and it makes me wonder if all this hype about Gorilla glass is artificial. So hats off to Foxconn and all other parties involved in the hardware. It's a pity that such great hardware doesn't get the success it deserves because of lack of software support. But thanks to XDA, we could enjoy a large variety of Roms (especially MiUi )and made it a pleasure to use the phone. I was hopeful of a KK update for a while, but then decided to move on to another VFM phone.
So thanks to TjStyle and all other devs and users for sharing their work. I'll keep checking back for a KK update. Hope to see some familiar faces in Moto G forum
Congrats for Moto g.
I'm on same boat.. Got my moto g on last Saturday already upgraded to kitkat. Feeling awesome experience with KK
Had very good time with mi410, still I'll be using fih-fb0
I miss u guys
Got my Moto G also.. Using mokee KK..
Still using Spice Mi410 for my secondary number. Truly great n badass phone.. Never complain bout ut strength..

[Q] Other OS?

I know my moto x android version works flawlesly out of the box with some xposed mods just to personalize it, but today I decided to check the development section to see if there are some cool and interesting things to flash.
To my surprise I haven't seen much action there, I would have expected some port of firefox os or at least ubuntu (like there was for the Samsung Galaxy SIII) why is that? I'm not a developer so unfortunately I lack the knowledge to do something like that or I would.
Are there really no moto x owners wanting to try some (probably broken ) alternative OSes?

If you lack the knowledge, learn lol.. Not all of the Moto x can get an unlocked bootloader so development is restricted or limited to a certain extent for some devices like the Verizon Moto X or the ATT version . But even though that's no excuse, most people prefer stock and decide not to go through the hassle of porting a different OS. Just my opinion. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.
Lack of interest, most likely. Firefox OS is a little pointless on devices with the hardware spec to run Android without batting an eyelash. As for Ubuntu Touch, there are a lot of devices not seeing it just due to a lack of interest in the OS itself from a lot of people (sadly). Only the most popular devices are likely to see ports of it.
That being said, I'd love to see Ubuntu Touch on Moto X, it's one of a few reasons I originally considered getting a Nexus 5 when i decided to get my Moto X.
Any non stock based ROMs we have still have major issues after a year.....can you imagine the issues with anything out of the ordinary like Ubuntu, Miui and other very different systems.
The X is just not a phone for developers or flashaholics. Its best run stock, (or stock based roms) maybe with Xposed for extra features. No one wants to lose their moto features either, and you only will have those on stock or stock based ROMs.
Things may change after the X stops getting updates. You may see more development then.
I have always wanted to run Ubuntu touch. I am trying to get it to work on my Samsung note pro but the selinux enforcement is a road block.

There's definitely a strong incentive to stay stock on the X.....but it didn't cure me unfortunately. I gave it to my wife, got an N5, installed multirom and have 4 ROMs installed on it as we speak. Lol

N5 is really tempting (or it would be if I wasn't on Verizon).

Yes, strange they can't be used on such a large carrier.

[Q] Third party roms? CM, AOKP, Slim, etc?

Hello all,
I am looking to pick up a Moto X (xt1095) to replace my xt1053. I am a little dismayed however at the lack of availability of roms for the device.
I am used to having CM or Slim or at least gravitybox running, and it looks like none of these are working yet for this phone. Is this simply because of the recent release of Lollipop and the scarcity of the Moto X or is there some underlying problem?
Basically, is there hope for the future?
Probably has more to do with most devs not touching Moto because of how developer hostile they were years ago. Also I suspect most are waiting to see if the Lenovo takeover pushes moto into a more "old moto" stance on devs again.
I was wondering the same, the phone has so much potential, why no development at all?
Thanks for the responses. I was hoping I suppose to at least see CM and some other mainstream developers already onboard, but I guess it's just because 3rd party devs haven't built around lollipop yet.
Same problem with Xposed.

There's a short thread in the General section with a developer looking for some files so he can start to build CM11 and 12. Several days old.
I got my pure edition on the way, and I also noticed the lack of ROMs. - I currently have an N5, my girlfriend really likes it so I'm going to give it to her for Christmas, was not really looking to upgrade, but oh well.
I really do hope the scene for this phone picks up a bit, otherwise I might just sell it and go back to N5... Unless the phone is so amazing that it will keep me from the ROM scene, but I don't know... I'm a flashaholic.
On the same subject - My friend got the same phone, but he mentioned needing to contact Motorola to get a bootloader unlock code so he could root it, is that a necessary step, or can that be avoided?
I understand the above step voids warranty, could also be why people are staying away from cooking ROMs for this.

You just have to go to their website( https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a ) and follow their instructions to unlock their phone.. Contacting them is not necessary. Voiding the warranty has been the case for multiple phones, however it hasn't stopped devs before.. Doubt that is the case
I bought the pure edition yesterday, I did my research and figured it would be better than a nexus 6 (way to big for me) and bought it. I assumed there was plenty of Dev work, I mean its a near stock phone and will likely outsell the nexus 6, but there's not even an official build of CM!!! Even the gnex is getting cm12. I just don't understand it. Z

That's funny cause CM is my least favorite of ROMs, they always seem to break things when they make changes, and ROMs based on CM are always left in the dark trying to catch up, fix whatever broke as result.
If there's not much being developed for this, I suppose I'd probably go back to 4.4 and work around it with xposed.
I think more development will come in time but I think most are waiting for stable 5.0 first. I look forward to gravitybox but personally I have never been as happy on any rom as I am AOSP(ish) and don't see the need with a phone like this to install any roms. It was more necessary back "in the day" to get rid of crapware and overbloated UI's (*cough* Touchwiz *cough*). Phones like the Nexus series, GPE editions, and the Moto X's have made me personally re-evaluate my interest in full ROM's.
If you guys were around when the original Moto x came out, then you'd remember that it also had a lack of roms and dev action when it launched... However now it's getting cm 12 like no one's business... I think it's just a matter of time before the roms start rolling in

Verizon model for att user

Okay, so to start off I've had an iphone for a couple years now and I'm way outta the loop on android things so please bare with me. I got my dad a moto x2 off ebay, its a verizon model. Looking on here I didn't see a verizon model posted in the phones section. Is there a difference other than software between models? Like could I flash a rom with an at&t radio and not have to worry about the dumb sim card error and have it work on lte? If so could someone just link me such a rom thats pre-rooted, debloated, and close to stock? I would really appreciate it. Also any tips or tricks on this phone would be awesome. (ps I'm not new to the custom rom scene just rusty)
Also did this thing get an official marshmallow update?
Thanks!
I have at&t, but I have the verizon moto x

Yeah, I was able to flash cm13 on it, which is made for the pure moto x 2014, and it works very well. I would highly recommend cm13, it is very close to stock and I run the google now launcher, since I dislike the app drawer in the default one. The only weird thing is moto display doesn't really work, but you can enable ambient display in display settings. If you have any other questions involving this phone I'd be happy to answer them!
