[Q] problem with usb port and software - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an AT&T Captivate, I successfully installed ICS ROM using internal SD card method, but then I decided to go back to GB through a backup that I made before I install ICS, when I tried to restore a backup using CMW recovery, some kind of error appeared after I have formatted the phone.
after I restart the phone it seems that there's no rom installed and the phone won't start I can't even get to the recovery mode the screen becomes white and the phone get very hot but nothing else.
I tried to get a new software using odin but then I remembered that I used to have a usb issue the usb port wasn't welded in place in the right way so the phone was charging but not recognized by the computer so I think the power legs are welded correctly but the data legs aren't.
I took the phone to a person who can make this welding good but then he told me that one of the usb welding pads on the motherboard are missing and that he can't weld it and he need something like a blueprint or a map for the board to but a wire instead of that missing pad.
so I'm asking, is there any way to install a software that doesn't need a USB connection and if not is there a place where I can find this map for the motherboard??????
plzzzz help guys

I once had my Cappy seemingly hard bricked, black screen and nothing else. I was able to use one of the alternate methods of getting into Download / Recovery Modes to reflash the phone. See -- Captivate - PC Connection Issues, Download Mode and Recovery Mode Help I used one of the methods where I pulled the battery, and then held a button combo while I replaced the battery.
It sounds like you have a custom recovery, either CWM or TWRP. If so, you may be able to put a ROM on the external_SD using your PC. Once you have done so put the microSD back in the phone and see if you can flash from recovery.

[Q] Simply put, i'm SOL.

SOLVED: when having trouble with your computer not making a good connection to the phone, try your USB HUB on the mother board. it totally fixed my problem!
So here it is. I received a cappy from a buddy at work.
Basically, she is running cognition (FROYO BASED) rom, not sure of the kernal, and Cwm.
i can get the phone to reboot into RED CWM recovery, and even into DOWNload mode.
The phone was shut off during a factory reset. the battery died.
(IDK the girl was a dumbass and did it from settings on the phone not in CWM )
The phone will boot, ONLY after a factory reset from CWM but the setup google accs f/c's and the only thing i can get it to do is volume up/down pull the notification bar down and power off recovey dl mode...ect ect.
Task manager say's there are no APPS installed on the phone running? yet when i go LVL 2 RAM clear, the phone says 13 apps closed..
I think the Stock APK's have been deleted, since i cannot get into menu at all.
Since she factory reset the phone, and wiped the SD CARD, ALL CWM recoveries she created are GONE.
I have Cleared the cache, and wiped dalvik code, fixed permissions.....
I'm very familiar with the VIBRANTS, not the cappy's so this is a challenge to me.
my Vibrant has connected with all the usb drivers from samsung, but the cappy cannot. I've even downloaded the drivers for just the CAPPY, uninstalled all others, and Still not recognized, yet my vibrant does?
i've installed i think every driver on here for captivates, kies downloads, even went to the samsung website and Downloaded from there.
STILL NOT CONNECTING.
Even DL'd the AIO cappy toolbox (very nice to have for my VIBRANT)
Still no avail.
THE PHONE CANNOT MOUNT THE EX SD CARD. So that idea's out.
all my drivers are correct for the 32 bit vista OS. even tried on my GF's 64 Windows 7.
Still no avail.
I've installed the drivers with the phone in DOWNLOAD mode even, still not connecting.
Rebooted the computer after removing and also reinstalling drivers.
Changed between 3 diff cords, all work for my VIBRANT,
still no avail.
Any idea's would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

First, see if you can find out which version of Cognition she was running (Gingerbread- or Froyo-based).
Once you have that information, I believe you should be able to download the appropriate ROM on you computer and copy it to the microSD card (adapter or whatever method you need to do to get it there). Since you can get into CWM recovery, you could try flashing the ROM from there. Assuming it's a full wipe rom (and you're not concerned about keeping apps installed on the phone), it should reset things to a more workable state. (If you are worried about apps remaining... I don't know what to say at this point, since you can't get to Tibu.)
If that doesn't work, you could try the one-click back to stock (realizing that you're having connectivity issues, I'll get to that in a second).
When you connect the phone in download mode to ODIN, does the yellow COM:# show up?
If you have tried ODIN on your Vista computer, try running ODIN as Administrator.
I've had some luck in the past getting the phone to be recognized (assuming Froyo) by doing this:
1. With nothing connected to computer, start ODIN (one-click to stock would be good).
2. Pull battery on phone.
3. Reinsert battery, but do not power on.
4. Hold Vol+/Vol-/, and insert USB cable.
5. Wait for it to kick into download mode, release buttons, and wait again.
6. See if ODIN recognizes it.

Thats my problem, the cappy does not see that there's an EX SD card there at all? says no files, but i've tried to push a cognition rom to the EX SD and use CWM to flash it to get it to boot, but the phone cannot see that there's an EX SD, but the SD card is fine, even my vibrant used it..
ODIN as ADMIN? tried that and nothing, still no yellow com port,
i know how to use odin, as my VIBE has been "Bricked" a few times lol
the vol up/down button combo does nothing, just shows up as a charging screen, the only way i can get the phone to download mode is through CWM.
the phone is running a FROYO based cognition ROM. or that's what her bf put on there.
This may sound stupid and simple but is the device set on mass storage from the settings menu? If you know.
Also have you tried mounting your sd cards in CWM?

lol THATS MY PROBLEM> the phone thinks it boots normally, but i cannot get the settings menu. like the "SETTINGS APK" file was deleted when she formatted the SD!
but i was just playing around and i got google voice search to pop up!
then from there i used my WIFI and setup the google settings, then i went to the market grabbed CWM and used the cognition rom i've already downloaded, and used it!
then the GREEN CWM booted, and it still cannot MOUNT EX SD card. so the flash failed.. HMMMMMM
As of now i am gonna go into the rom i DLed (cognition) and try to DL Root explorer and hard push the Settings.apk file to the system. HOPEFULLY from there i can get my settings back to restore the phone.
Realizing that it's a long shot at best due to connectivity issues, have you tried using ADB?
If so, you could push the ROM you need to the internal SD.
so, used root explorer to move the NEW cognition froyo rom from the EXternal SD to the INTERNAL SD. from there i used CWM recovery to flash the rom, the rom flash was successful, but now the phone is stuck in bootloop on the AT&T world phone screen.
and CWM will not LOAD. FML
Looks like i'm gonna have to take this apart and get to the internal SD card. =/
Can you get to CWM with the Vol+/Vol-/Power combo - hold those past one AT&T screen and when you see the second one, let go?
Adb was not an option at that point, the phone couldn't recognize it even had a phone attached to it.
but now that i'm stuck in bootloop and with no CWM recovery OR DL MODE, yeah the jig isnt' workin... HAHA
i guess its just a paperweight now.. Owell, i tried.
i held it for about 3 mins... lol and the jig i got for my VIBRANT isn't workin either. I didnt know these phone's can lose the 3 button combo reset? i often flash I9000 roms to my vibe, thats why i have a jig, but i didnt think cappy's would do that unless i flashed an i9000 rom to it? lol
Just because I'm not sure if you tried it - have you tried plugging the cable into a different port on your computer? If it's not one directly connected to the motherboard, that can sometimes cause problems getting the phone to be recognized.
Also - does the phone show any signs of recognizing there is a cable inserted (like charging)?
tried every port. No the phone only acts as if it wants to display the batt charging symbol, but does not show, I cant believe it, i actually think i bricked a galaxy s.. haha
Another long shot, but you could try the One-click unbrick. Since it's Heimdall-based, there's always a chance.
Wow, didnt know that even existed. Definately gonna be useful for my Vibrant, haha i'll give it a shot.. THANKS, i'll report back after i try it.
I hope it does something. With the connectivity issues you're seeing it's starting to sound a little like hardware issues.
I'm going to throw out a checklist of stuff, knowing that you are already experienced with ODIN and ROM flashing, simply because I know I usually can use some sort of checklist to make sure I've caught everything.
- Redownloading/reinstalling drivers, rebooting before connecting phone
- Redownloading/reinstalling ODIN package
- Redownloading ROM to flash
- Hold V+/V-, inserting USB cable
- Remove battery, hold V+/V-, insert USB, insert battery
- Hold V+/V-/HOME softkey
- Hold V+/V-/HOME/Power
- If download mode reached, allowing phone to sit connected for long time
- If download mode reached, connecting phone after opening ODIN
- If download mode reached, connecting phone before opening ODIN
- If download mode reached, connecting phone after ODIN, disconnecting, reconnecting phone
That's all I can think of for a checklist of stuff to try/retry.
I appreciate the help but i've tried all of those options several times, The jig did work to get it into DL mode, but from there i'm still in the same **** position, my computer will not recognize that the phone is connected.
Is it possible that the phone somehow lost its drivers? what i mean by that is, the phone acts different with different USB ports, completely.
On one port it says unknown device, another USB android composite device.
Its as if the phone's changing as i change ports. Very FRUSTRATING!
i think it could be a hardware issue myself, but how could a corrupt drive work so well? To the T every time i've used the jig DL mode fired up, but my computer still cannot find the drivers to run it. Hell i've even tried using winusb drivers package to force install the phone, still no avail.
Like i said, I really appreciate the input, I figured if i couldnt figure it out, someone on here had some EXP in doing this lol i've just never had a driver problem give me so much trouble. IDK, bout ready to turn this paper weight into a pile of ash.
If you can get into cwm, have you tried doing another hard reset/factory wipe?
Thats the problem, earlier i COULD get into CWM, and hell i flashed the new rom perfectly!
now it is stuck bootlooping, therefore i just used the Jig, and first few times it didnt work, now its stuck bootlooping, download mode is attainable, and still NOT connecting to my pc via usb.

Try a different computer? also, which version o of odin are you using? I've found 1.3 & 1.82 to work best.

[Q] Bricked Captivate & Micro USB for data broken...

Hello everyone,
I installed a rom on my rooted phone and it did not go well. Now the phone is bricked.. Normally I would be able to fix this. But a few months ago the phone stopped being recognized by my computer. Still charges but the port is damaged some how and no pc will recognize it. I can not get it into recovery I have tried and tried again and again. Still stuck in android with the triangle around it. And sometimes I will get a symbol with a phone-triangle-pc. Does this mean it is done, shot, bricked for ever? LOL
You could replace the micro usb port...
Connect phone to pc and run samsung kies it will repair files then open kies, go to tools and install drivers then get into download mode and flash with odin

I can fix this. Send me a PM.
I am having a similar issue. My phone is soft bricked on the AT&T splash screen with no ability to get it into recovery. The micro USB is completely non-functional.
I am (was?) running CM7 when the problem occurred. I have considered just about every option I can think of (and have had the phone together and apart twice to see if I could get the port working... no dice) including having the phone boot from an external SD card but this still seems to need some ability to get into recovery, which I do not have.
Any creative solutions (short of just buying a new phone...)

You could send it to the guy above to have a new micro usb port installed or MobileTechVideos.com. I had them fix a hard brick on my Captivate and would use their services again in a heart beat if I needed to.

Upgrade from 2.3.5 without USB?

Hi,
I have a Galaxy S (I9000) which the USB is not working (I have tried cleaning it, different cables, different computers). I am not sure if the issue is due to a corrupt ROM image? I only say this because when I have the USB cable connected, and turn on the phone I get a picture of the battery (flat) with the white wheel/ring which freezes in the same position and nothing happens afterwards - I can only boot the phone with no cable connected.
As I do not have any USB connectivity, it means I cannot use Odin to perform any upgrade.
Anyone have any suggestions?
thanks
I have been searching the forums and I have installed Clockwork Mod recovery, but I would like to do a backup before I try anything. To perform a ROM backup you need root access. I have tried Gingerbreak but it does not want to work.
I know this is a newbie question and maybe my head is a bit full today of all the reading. Is it possible to download a ROM i.e. slimics, copy it to the SD card (external), put the phone into recovery mode and update from the SD card?
Or have I missed a major fundamental area
thanks

[Q] Phone Stuck in boot loop - USB port broken

First of all, i'm new here, so if I make a mistake, no hate please.
So I was trying to install Xbean onto my Galaxy S GT-I9000.
This phone has a broken USB port, and as such, I had to root and flash Clockwordmod Recovery mod onto it without a computer. I managed to get into CWM Recovery and went to flash the Xbean.zip file I had on the internal SD card, and when I did, it lasted maybe 3 seconds, then turned off and back on. It's now hanging at the "Galaxy S GT-I9000" first boot screen. For some reason, the 3 button combo doesn't work for either recovery or download.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this issue?
P.s. I have already taken the battery out and placed it back in multiple times.
same here. I have a galaxy s I9000 with a broken usb port and I can get into download mode but no recovery. because of the usb port can not use odin. searched a lot but I could not find a solution. without odin it seems it is not possible to fix the phone. One repair center guy told me that there is a chip or something on the motherboard that regulates the usb connection. that thing is damaged because of imporperly charging. I have a bricked phone.(though I have still download mode)
both of u. if ur on GB. n u success to boot to recovery before da problem occur, u need to flash cm9 stable first to gain da cwm not direct custom ROM. then first flash will bootloop. juz take out battery, n use 3 combo button to go back to recovery again. its da matter of releasing da combo button. release it RIGHT AFTER u see da first bootsplash n wait. if failed. try again. n if it still fail. it means da kernel doesnt even flashed inside system.so u need to flash back to firmware using odin.
note: first flash will install cwm n kernel only as upgrading partition.
second flash will install da ROM.
try to boot to recovery again.

Usually the way to fix this would be to use the adb shell to force download mode, or using a USB jig to go back to stock. However neither of them would work because you have a broken USB port... :/

Again, best way to do this would be to use download mode and flash in a stock rom. Bu tif the USB port is broken... :/
I think the only thing you guys can do would be to get the USB port repaired somehow. Most methods (although do try @compacity's method, it may work) rely on the USB port and a USB connection.

was struggling with the same problem for 2 weeks until I had to give up and send it in.
In my case though, it was not like the support guy said a broken chip but abrasion of the connector in the middle of the USB Port. Obviously plugged it in too often.
Sent it to W-Support, they replaced the small plate in the middle of the connector and everything is working nicely again. So probably a piece of hope for you that maybe some support can still revive your phone. Unfortunately afaik there is no way to recover it w/o reflashing. Was within warranty so no clue what the price would be.
Some people are reporting that removing the battery for like one night made the bootloop disappear.. desperate times etc. wo why not give it a shot

As I said before donwload mode is ok but conection can not be done due to broken usb port (even after fixing the usb port two times). So I guess there is something wrong with the main board. Anyway thanks to all...May be if there is a way to boot from an external sd (like installing ubuntu from usb stick) if not I have dead phone....

[Q] [i9000b] Broken Glass - Need data or format the SDCARD

Ok, so many posts about broken glass... I did not find one of my model so here it goes.
I broke my screen.
Well here's the situation. Already got another phone so will try to repair the screen somewhere...
But i need to do 2 things first.
1) recover the data in the internal memory
2) Flash a new rom (or do a factory reset if possible) and format the sdcard
The issue is that with the broken glass it's very difficult (duh), so what i need are the steps for getting to the mount USB in the CWM, and to the Format sdcard or factory reset
What i mean is something of the sorts of "3 times volume down, enter, 2 up, enter" etc etc
I checked download mode and it's working fine, Odin detects the phone, so basically i know it works.
So i'll go into CWM.... can someone guide this blind man? hahahahaha
Have the Semaphore Kernel for JB version 2.9.15
Thanks
Lordi
Have you tried to connect to the computer, it should show up as a removable drive. Also you could use the Samsung Kies software to upgrade the phones original rom, which would effectively reset the phone, all you would need to do is run Kies then connect the phone to the computer, switch the phone on and wait until the rom loads to the lock screen, unlock it and Kies should then connect to the phone.
[SOLVED]
OK, found the steps watching a video about another thing.
Basically you turn on the device using the 3 button combo to put into CWM and do: Up (4 times), Power, Up 2 times (power).
That mounts the USB.
Just for anyone who needs it.
Lordi
Thanks for sharing your solution!
