(work in progress) DIY Xperia SP dock - Xperia SP Accessories

Hello all! As i saw earlier in february a user had made his own homemade sp dock, so i taught to myself to make one.
Here it's my concept and the main idea was to be a minimalistic and modular easy to mount dock. The material that i'm thinking is plexiglass (not hobbyglass, most of laser cutting workshops won't cut hobbyglass because it's made with vinyl and also plexi is more resistant). Soon i'll upload the drawing with measurements and the cad file ready to be cutted, but i need to figure out a way to make a modular holding for microcharger without affecting the dock and to do this i need to build a test model first.
Cheers!

haha im glad i inspired you, that idea looks neat and i do happen to have some plexiglass which i can use maybe when i get some fee time i can post 2 guides, for the carger try getting one with a square plastic cover over the charging tip and then cut out the glass and sort of wrap it around you will get like a charging stick type thing and with that you can make a cut out in the stand in which you can put the cable

Thanx man! keep in mind that i've used 3mm thick plexi, i forgot to mention but i'll update the topic next week probably
Cheers!

i had an idea where instead of using the 3mm plexi in layers with spacing you could use a solid piece and use a light diffuser so that the xperia sp lights diffuse into the whole stand lighting the whole thing up

I thaught myself, but i don't know where i can obtain a full piece, beside 3d printing wich is very expensive for this kind of diy project.

Nutshell: http://tuff-as-nuts.com/index.asp?PageAction=COMPANY
I had contacted Nutshell regarding a customized Horizontal Case (black) that will fully enclosed the HTC Advantage X7510 with the leather pouch included about 2 months ago. I was able to get intouch with Ian Miller and was basically received with open arms. I was asked to submit my design and the dimensions.
The dimensions are: 5.8 inches (lenght) x 4.4 inches (height) x 1.30 inches (depth).
It is closed by a velcro flap that fully covers the top of the case preventing any accidental exposure to the elements.
The back of the case has the D ring and metal belt clip lined with leather. But in all honesty, I think it would have looked better if the metal clip was left without the leather strip cover. It would looked nicer if the silver finish of the metal clip was shown rather than hidden.
But all in all, the case is very well made. The stitches and cuttings were done right and very clean. The case will protect the X7510 and it's leather pouch while having the ability to clip it to your belt or trousers on the go.
I paid $95.00 for the case, but it may become cheaper if it will be popular.
I have attached pictures for you guys and gals to check. I believe NUTSHELL will mass produce them if the demand is high enough.
THANK YOU NUTSHELL (Ian) for a case well done.
Feel free to ask questions...

nice find as i just bought myself another case but this one i like a lot better although the case i bought was only $49
Thanks Christian. Glad to help.
As this was a prototype, we have not yet given it a part number...but we shall and then post it to our catalog.
With your blessing I"ll use some of the images you have posted here.
Obviously we shall try to price it right, but as the first few will, like this one, be hand cut, pricing will have to stay the same in the short term.
However, if there is an interest (and it has to be considerable to make it worthwhile, we'll likely look at getting the assets that will enable us to run off some volume).
That said, it really is over to the community to determine if this product gets wings...or....?
A suggestion: Maybe someone could open a book to register interest (bulk purchases work best and enable us to finetune our pricing). As I am not a regular on this forum, maybe that someone could run point for me on this.
So it really is over to you guys.
We'll do what we can.
All the best.

Nutshell,
Very well taken pictures indeed. Looks like real good quality pouch. Is it made to custom sizes? I normally carry my device without the keyboard, so it is quite a bit thinner and smaller. What would be the total cost shipped to Australia?
Also, a question for cktlcmd. Currently, I have a soft pouch, and taking it out is easy, as I can squeeze the soft pouch to push out the device. With a hard leather one, I imagine it is not easy to squeeze the bottom to force the device upward, so one would have to lift it up. Would that be easy? Or would the device be too slippery for that, even that I carry it naked?

In my case, since it also houses the X7510 with keyboard and the leather case, it is not slippery at all. It is easy to grab it on top and just pull it out. The case itself is not made of really hard leather plus it is lined inside with felt like skin to protect the device from being scratched by the case itself. The technique I use to get it out fast is to pull on top and press each sides of the case because that is where I notice the greatest hold on the device occurs.
In your case, since you will probably want Nutshell to adjust the measurements to accommodate just the device, it won't even be a problem because of the soft felt lining, it will just slid easily in and out.
It trully is a nice case. I wish they had designed it like this from the start.

I have listed the product for the x7510 in our catalog:
Horizontal belt case for HTC x7510
Sure, we can make you a slimmer horizontal case.
Costs would be the same.
We would need the dimensions without the keyboard.
Shipping to Oz from NZ depends on how quickly you would want one.

Will the 7510 case also fit the 7500/7501? My understanding is that they are the same dimensions... Anyone know offhand?
Thanks for the topic
Have anyone ever seen a vertical case for X7500 for the use without the external keyboard?
This is a bit off-topic, but personally I find the HW keyboard to be the ultimate screen-protector and would not dream of leaving home without it (even though I use my Advantage in portrait-mode 95% of the time).
On-topic again I would guess that one could use any case made for the 7510 WITH keyboard as this unit is just a bit thinner than the original 7500/7501.

No. The keyboard is the most effective way to ruin your device with scratches. Take it away if you want your unit to look new all the time. If you really must have the keybaord, put a piece of cloth between the unit and the keyboard to prevent them from rubbing against each other.
We have different experiences then eaglesteve. I have used my HTC X7500 for well more than a year with the original book cover (with the 3 clips) and have only miniscule scratches on the keyboard itself, not on the main unit.
I now also have the Piel Frama Case (since a month ago) and with this case it would be even more difficult to scratch the unit with the keyboard.
And even if this was NOT the case I would much rather have endured a scratch or two than having my screen broken due to a fall or pointed item pressing against it (even in the pouch). The solid steel of the keyboard over the screen gives me an ease of mind I will not trade for the sake of a marginally smaller "package" to carry around.
And now, with the vertical Nutshell-Pouch I hope to enjoy my Advantage X7500 for a long time since no better device (for my needs) seems forthcoming from HTC or any other manufacturer.
I agree with eaglesteve - I've had more scratches/rub-marks from the keyboard than from anything else. Keeping the keyboard as a screen protector is a non-issue, just make sure the screen faces towards your body when its in a pouch, or in a pocket. On the weekends I leave my Nutshell and the keyboard at home, and just face the screen towards my leg in my pocket.

finally after many, many tries, a case that really works. well made. beautiful. sturdy. i got the mag lock. very nice, highly recommended.
Well... I just order mine from Spain... 10/14 days to wait... will see. I'm risk 99.95 USD on it.
I just receive the confirmation email... good signal, my VISA still works.
Received last week.
Well finished... and the quality is according the price.
The X7500 fits perfectly even with it's case. Since I'm not placing the X7500 in the case with the original one there is place for my backup battery.
Great job Nutshell
This case is nice! But I always wanted a case that would allow me to hold my X7500 without the keyboard,so it would look like a slim and supersized-screen IPOD! That I can put into my pocket easily..like an IPOD.
So, I have a question for Nutshell: can you build us one? But I can someone here volunteer to provide some dimentions for an X7500 or X7501, coz I really sucked at the whole designing and measurement thing, afraid I would screw up the whole thing.

Android Screen Cleaner :D

These things look like they were made for the fingerprint magnet that is the NookColor lol
AndroidSwag used to have them, but I dont see them available anymore, so heres a place on eBay that does have them.
http://stev.ca/ev86NJ
So this would hook onto the otherwise useless little gap in the bottom left of the NC? How does this thing work? You just get one cleaner? Is it washable? how long does it last before it needs replacement or gets too dirty to do any good?
Just wondering, if any of you have personal experience with this thing. It would certainly be lovely if I didn't have to carry around eyeglass wipes.
Looks like the lanyard would be too short to cover the NC.

Got a few of those. The back of the android is the felt cleaning part. It's about 5cm wide actually.
The lanyard is elastic so that you can reach (just about) the whole screen by stretching it (to the max).
It does a good job, not sure how long it will last...

My Custom NOOKcolor stand

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to post some pics of a stand that I put together. At first I bought one from BoxWave that they had up labeled as a Bamboo NOOKcolor stand.
http://www.boxwave.com/nookcolor-cradles-and-mounts/bamboo-nookcolor-stand/bwpdd/tpt-zfkf
Since I purchased it, they have changed the image on there website, though. Originally it was pretty misleading on the dimensions of the stand. I paid $30 for this thing and really it's only meant for a cellphone. It's absolutely way too small to hold up the NOOKcolor without tipping over.
Anyway, I liked the design of it so I went out and bought a bamboo cutting board from Walmart for $20 and cut it up into a bunch of pieces. I made myself a cardboard template based on that smaller stand I originally bought. I stacked all the pieces and then glued them together. I don't have a band saw so I found this really nice guy who has a shop over at Etsy who agreed to cut it out for me. He really did an awesome job. The link to his shop is here
http://www.etsy.com/people/irishmanswoodworks
in case anyone wants him to make one for you.
After I got it back from being cut out I sanded it up a bit more, put several coats of Tung oil and glued on a piece of felt. I think it came out really nice in the end. I attached some pics, so let me know what you guys think
That looks Amazingly Simple to do.
That is really quite snazzy!
I love it! Great work!
The only wood I'm good at working is ......
LOL tooo easy.
It does look beautiful. Does he use other exotic woods and stains?
I supplied the glued up bamboo board for him to cut, but I'm sure he can make it out of whatever you would want.
What a sweet stand. It looks really nice.
This is exactly what I'm looking for! I use XBMC in my living room and my Nook color is my remote. Thing is it runs out of juice all the time since I keep it on 24/7 and its a pain to charge. I'd like to see you drill a small square hold in the center of the bamboo where it can "dock" and run it out the back USB. Then we can run the usb to the AC outlet/USB Charger and have a Charging Dock!
Thats pretty awsome
Great work!

Home made pogo pin charging dock

Hey everyone, I've grown tired of waiting for Asus/Google to release a dock for my nexus 7 so I built one myself. I'd like to share my work with you all.
I cut my dock out of 6.0mm thick acrylic with a 30W CO2 laser. Cutting all the pieces for one dock takes around 9 min on my machine (more watts=faster cuts). If you have access to a laser this is a very easy job. Maybe you could go use one at your local tech shop or something. The dock consists of 5 pieces that snap together and stay that way by virtue of friction. You could probably cut this design out of wood instead of plastic like I did here. That might look kinda cool.
I bought the acrylic sheet I cut the pieces out of as scrap from a local plastic store (TAP Plastics) for US$1.
The pogo pins I used are manufacturer part# 0933-0-15-20-75-14-11-0 made by Mill Max, purchased from newark.com for $1.20 each. I use bluetooth for audio so I didn't wire up the two middle stereo out pins, so my BOM comes to a grand total of US$3.40. I'm happy with the result for that price.
The dock works great. The device recognizes the dock and begins to charge first time, every time I seat the device. I've tried to avoid blocking any of the speaker grills, plugs, microphones light sensors and cameras. Unfortunately my dock does kinda block the ambient noise microphone that's right next to the pogo pin pads (stupid spot to put that).
For now I've just soldered pogo pins 1 and 4 to a 5v charger I had laying around. So charging works great.
EDIT: I'm working on making a PCB that supports:
-- stereo audio out via 1/4 in headphone jack
-- Micro USB B connector for charging
Stay tuned here for an updated parts list and schematic and PCB layout files.
As reported elsewhere on the forum, I can confirm that the device stops drawing current via the pogo pins when a USB OTG cable is plugged in (although the device still indicates that it is charging in the menu bar, seems to be a bug). So pogo pin charging while using USB OTG seems to be a no-go (pun intended!). Update: this may be fixable with a modified kernel.
I expect a 1st party dock will come out very soon since the OS software is now ready for it. Several of the features added by recent updates seem to be aimed directly at dock mode (Daydream, portrait home screen) and they work great (the daydream screensaver auto-starts properly when docked).
I'll attach some pictures of the docks I made. I made 3, two out of white and one out of black plastic. I like the black one better although the glossy acrylic in black is a fingerprint magnet.
I created the design files using the free Autocad clone software called Draftsight. I'll attach it here so anyone who wants to can get out and cut themselves a charging dock for their favorite tablet. The units for the drawing are mm. The drawing format is autocad 2010 ascii dxf.
If you do try to use my design to cut your own dock, be aware that the tolerances on the two curved side pieces are very tight to ensure that the other three pieces fit in snugly enough to hold everything together. If the cut width for your laser differs greatly from mine, you might end up with a dock that doesn't snap together or one that is loose and falls apart. Don't say I didn't warn you! In the case your dock doesn't fit together properly, you can make some very simple tweaks to the inside cuts on the side pieces to get things to go together for your laser.
The design will need some major adjustments if you use anything other than 6mm thick stock. The holes in the side pieces will need to change as will the width and possibly position of the slot in the cradle piece.
Be aware that it's actually pretty easy to put the dock together incorrectly (design flaw). There are 4 assembly possibilities that change the locations of the pogo pin holes, three of them are wrong. You'll figure that one out easily enough. The one that is tricky is the cradle piece (H-shaped piece) which is basically two rails that create a slot between them that the device rests in. If you look closely, you'll notice that the slot is not exactly centered in the piece making one rail ever so slightly thicker than the other. The thinner rail should be towards the front of the dock (there are only two ways you can assemble this part so you have a %50-%50 chance of getting this wrong if you're not careful here). If you get this wrong the device won't lean up against the back rests so it will be very unstable and will sit very awkwardly in the dock.
Cheers!
p.s. I'm happy to help anyone out who wants to try making their own dock. Ask away and I'll do my best to answer any questions.
Excellent work there. It's always great to see XDA member's ingenuity at work
Nice work I'm also in the process of finishing up my dock also..

That is my first draft of a dock i was just going to just print out on a 3d printer, but its proving difficult to get access to it as i though i was going to lol. I think i'm just going to go convert my design to somethin similar to yours where i can use the waterjet and cut out a bunch o acrylic. Thanks for the inspiration.
Quick design intent question:
Why did you leave so much room (.5" ish) on the sides of the tablet, doesn't this force you to sit there and find the right positioning so it will interface correctly with the pogos.
Also in my post is a nexus 7 file i created if anyone wants to model it against that, its so much easier to just model an offset.

PS, what tolerances did you incorporate into your mating parts?

I do think it would be possible to bring the feet/side pieces in closer so that they define where the tablet would rest in the up-down (relative to tablet) degree of freedom. That could be be better than what I have done, but I'm not sure. Try it and let us know!
By moving the side pieces right next to the top and bottom of the tablet you would have to eliminate the connections between the two rails on the cradle (H-shaped) piece to make room. I like those connections because they:
1) precisely define the width of the groove that the tablet sits in
2) limit the up-down (relative to tablet) degree of freedom so there's no guess work as to where the proper docking position is (but you'd be taking care of this with the side pieces)
3) provide some additional stiffness/strength to the cradle piece
Beautiful done!
I tried making a small PCB with the pogo pins just to test if it indeed would charge and give me sound out, before i'd even bother drawing up a dock, but on mine, it just charges, there is no sound output, and it does not ask me to use the pogo pins for sound output. Running 4.1.2

Hey, that looks pretty cool!
I might raise the height of the front piece there so the lip comes up in front of the tablet a little higher. You don't want the tablet popping out while you're tapping on the top of the screen. Also note that your back piece will partially cover your speaker grill, but that's probably NBD.
Ta Da, works great, I'll plug in the audio and power soon. I purposely designed the front to barely reach over its very closely calculated tolerances and that puppy aint coming out accidently

Our 3M adhesives are amazing, and we actually use different ones depending on the materials of the actual device. We've been shipping internationally since day one, and to some of the most humid climates in the world. Rest assured, it will never be an issue.
Website?
I have some concerns about this skins. As you said the adhesive is different and I saw that for removing it we should use a hair dryer. Back plate of the N5X looks like a little bit naive. May you guarantee that this skin won't damage N5X's back if I want to remove it?
Sounds interesting! Please post some pics when you have the 5X version ready! Send one to me if you want an honest review as well!
I too would love to be able to review one of these skins... I dropped you a pm about that last night, op.
I had never heard of Toast until last night, and I spent a good 2 hours on youtube checking out all the phones that it has been made for with all of the colors and optional patterns & etching. Extremely neat stuff.

As for leather, we determined that it's going to take a lot of design work on these guys, so we're holding off until more requests start coming in. I've added you to the list, and I'll be sure to keep ya updated!

I have some concerns about this skins. As you said the adhesive is different and I saw that for removing it we should use a hair dryer. Back plate of the N5X looks like a little bit naive. May you guarantee that this skin won't damage N5X's back if I want to remove it?

Hitting the cover with a little heat from a hair dryer will help release the adhesive and it will come off with ease. If you do not do the hair dryer trick, there may be a little bit of adhesive left on the device, but you can literally roll it off with your fingertip. Rest assured, the OEM back will be exactly as it was prior to Toasting. We've covered countless devices without issue, however we would gladly replace your phone if it's damaged in the removal process.

Thanks, minnemike! :highfive:
We're shooting the other woods right now, so we'll have images with front covers and etchings up later this afternoon!

Thank you so much... but alas I really do not have any formal review site or channel. Maybe in the near future though, so maybe I can take you up on it for future iterations. My reviews would be pretty much limited to a few message boards such as this one.

Thank you for your quick response. I also want to be informed about durability. But I need an honest and objective response. It's wood so how durable is this skin? I don't mean protection.

Toast is built to last, and it ages gracefully. We use high quality hardwoods that receive 3 coats of a hand rubbed finish to protect from the elements. If it takes a hard hit, the wood may show a little scuff or scratch, but it looks natural. You can also apply a tiny amount of olive oil and it'll blend right in, but I personally prefer the worn look.

At least for me, durability, as far as cosmetic looks go, wouldnt be an issue. I love the look of aged wood. Love the idea of making my phone look like something carved from an ancient forest, transported back in time and now just rediscovered.
