[Q] Can't boot HTC One - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Small back story. Mom's phone. Cracked screen along time ago but doesn't have insurance. Then while installing OTA Update, phone got stuck at boot logo. Obviously can't do warranty with cracked screen so I decided to give it a try. Tried a factory reset and still stuck on boot logo.
Here's what Ive tried. I unlocked the bootloader. installed custom recovery. CWM and TWRP both tried with everything. I did a complete wipe through custom recovery, then tried to start fresh. I'm on a mac with parallels for windows 7. Couldn't get adb to work all the time so I've been using an OTG cable for installs. I've tried RUU.exe, ruu.zip. I've also tried custom rom's. I've even tried installing custom rom and then flashing the boot.img in fastboot. I've spent countless hours trying to get this thing to boot anything but to no avail. I tried to s-off but rumrunner wasn't working for me for some reason. Please help, as I will be greatly greatly appreciative. I've read tons of forums including htc1guru.com but nothing has worked so far. Thank you! So here is all the details on the phone:

I am not 100% sure of this but you may also need to flash stock recovery before running the ruu.
You can extract the recovery.img from the ruu and flash it before the ruu

You have to use the 3.24.531.3 ruu
the 1.27.531.3 is too old and is a downgrade to your phone, can't do without S-Off

Ok so I ran the ruu.exe from the link after I relocked it and it appeared to go through perfect. No error messages.
As the phone rebooted, it went right back to the htc splash screen and wont go anywhere from there, so once again, no boot.
I don't know if it makes a difference but I also have an HTC One M7 and my boot logo includes the HTC logo with "quietly brilliant" underneath, whereas the phone I'm working on doesn't have show quietly brilliant.

No worries, as hard as I have tried, you can't brick these things, it may seem hopeless, but there is always a way back. Flash a downgrade Hboot to like 1.44. Flash stock recovery. Find the T-Mobile zip that's in the forums. Flash. Should work.

Ignored it, ran ruu.exe again and of course nothing.

Thank you for that! I've considered myself a pretty determined guy but I am starting to get a little worried.
I'll try to downgrade Hboot. Any reading material for me on that process? I have been unsuccessful getting S-OFF and I thought you had to have S-OFF to downgrade Hboot
I really appreciate it guys, I know i'll get it, i'm just not use to having all these problems.

Which ruu did you use? the one from htc or the one you had?
Just curious not sure that's the cause of anything, but it doesn't like something on the phone cause signature failed.

Well the file that was in the link was just an .exe file and I don't know how to pull the recovery.img out of that. so I just used the .zip file on htc1guru.com website for the recovery image.

That recovery is too old, you need this one http://d-h.st/pVo
Will likely have to unlock bootloader to flash, then lock again to run the ruu

This was because you flashed the old recovery. Flash the one I sent you (red triangle is normal) Then flash the ruu again, it can take 10-20 in for first boot

Ok followed it to the letter. unlocked bootloader, flashed stock recovery you gave me, relocked bootloader, rebooted phone, ran RUU.exe, phone rebooted, let it sit for 30 minutes but still no boot past htc splash screen.
Any ideas on what I can investigate? And please know, I really do appreciate the help.

Just another thought, wonder if its a bootloader issue cause of the ota failure, although I thought 1.55 was OK for 4.3
Try this
fastboot erase cache
install ruu again (the one downloaded from htc)
try a reboot, if it doesn't work lets try twrp recovery
unlock bootloader again
flash TWRP 2.6.3.4 recovery http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7ul
fastboot erase cache
Try a reboot at this point, if it hangs again try the arhd rom below
flash arhd 53 rom (essentially kitkat stock) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183023

Decrypted RUU need s-off to be flashed. That is why this one failed to install. With S-ON you need a signed ruu.exe or .zip and must be flashed in ruu mode with a locked/relocked bootloader.
Also ARHD from android 4.4 and up require TWRP 2.6.3.3 to be flashed, not sure if it will flash properly with CWM but ARHD thread specify to use TWRP 2.6.3.3 only. Did you cleared cache after flashing each rom and recovery?

You are right here. You must be locked/relocked to flash a ruu with s-on. Also remember that you need S-OFF to flash a decrypted RUU

Flashing stock recovery before flashing the ruu is not required. The stock recovery is flashed during the process. With S-ON the ruu will flash if all these conditions are present:
Bootloader must be locked/relocked
ruu must be signed with htc private key (not decrypted)
CID must match the ruu
MID must match the ruu
With S-OFF:
Bootloader can be locked/relocked/unlocked
ruu doesn't need to be signed
cid and mid must match

If you didn't get any error message then the ruu should have flashed correctly. How much time did you waited on the ''htc splash screen'' ? First reboot after flashing a ruu can take up to 10 min to boot past the splash screen...

This screen with the exclamation mark IS the stock recovery. When on that screen you needs to press and hold VOL+ then hit power and release both buttons and the stock recovery menu will appear.

You bootloader was relocked at that point, so you can't flash recovery!
Please post an updated ''fastboot getvar all'' and your bootloader status again. You should try to flash the ruu again, erase cache then boot the phone and wait at least 10-15 mins to see if it boots.
Btw sry for the very long post...

IMHO, keep S-Off no matter what, even if you have to return it for warranty (hopefully not) or even sell it. some phones are actually shipped with S-Off and (from what I've read) it's very difficult to say that you "tampered" with your phone because you have s-off. several people (on the posts) have returned their phones to service center for repair, and got them back s-off again. no complaints, unless it said RELOCKED, UNLOCKED, or TAMPERED in the bootloader. S-Off is OK.
now you can go ahead and get it back to stock.

Last time I tried using Sprint 1.31.651.2, now that I am on S-OFF, can I use 1.29.651 version since that is a .exe version instead of a .zip version? I'm also asking this so I can strictly follow QBKING77's tutorial on going back to stock.

Don't know "QBKING77's tutorial", but you can use pretty much any RUU now that you're S-Off. Downgrading is possible thanks to S-Off. Just stick to SPRINT RUUs, ROMs etc, as I understand they (and possibly Verizon) are different from other carriers.
And remember to keep S-Off, that will always allow you to downgrade if needed or flash firmware, etc.
How do you get S-Off after custom ROM
So I'm also getting the "12 signature verify fail" the OP was getting... I don't have (never have had) S-Off. I htcdev unlocked and rooted by AT&T HTC One and put the GPe ROM on it... now I'm trying to go back to stock. Can't run the RUU w/o S-Off apparently, but also apparently can't get S-Off with this ROM? Halp! How do I get out of this situation?

Check the date in bootloader; if it's before June 2013, then revone should work. If the date is June or after then it's a patched hboot 1.44, and you need to downgrade before running revone, check this thread it has the downgrade instruction (T-Mob and ATT only): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2431515
and remember you need to be on a Sense 5, 4.1.2 based ROM.

So this is part of what I'm struggling with... It seems I can't get S-Off without being on a Sense 5/4.1.2 ROM, but how can I get that ROM loaded without S-Off? All the "stock" images I've found seem to all be RUUs or otherwise not work with S-On. What am I missing here?

1- first thing, did you check the bootloader date? if it's the patched 1.44 (ie June 2013 or after) then if you do the downgrade (only for ATT and T-Mobile), I think that also includes the ROM.
2- and just to get a Sense 5/4.1.2 based ROM on your phone, you just flash it through custom recovery (any custom or stock ROM will do), if you can't find one I'll PM you a link to one that worked for me, but first check point 1
Thanks nkk71... So yeah, hboot, while v. 1.44, is dated Jul 5, 2013. So it looks like I need to downgrade that. But as you note, that link says I have to be on a stock Sense 5 ROM. I have found a TMO Germany rom, but I haven't yet found an AT&T one.

I just took a quick look at the ATT downgrade guide and the first thing it asks (actually point 3) is to install a nandroid backup, that will put the correct Sense 5 ROM on your phone, no need to go look for one.
Hit the thanks button if I've helped
Score. Thanks so much. I think finding a nandroid backup (and then switching to cwm from twrp) was really the key here. But I'm now all fully restored to stock. Thanks again!!
Can someone link me to a thread or video on how to go to S-off, I don't have any rom installed and I can't go back in to recovery.
Hope I'm not screwed

same problem . Please help!

[Q] No OS, no nothing

Oke guys,
I probally did one of the most stupid things. Got my One transformed tot a GPE 4.3 version works smooth. Yesterday an OTA update to 4.4 really messed up my day. Try to install everything gone....No i am not able to install any version at al.
Got the last version of TWRP installed. got myself an unlocked bootloader even an 4.3 GPE rom. But TWRP keeps giving me the message "Error flashing zip: 'sdcard/<M7_UL_JB443_STOCK_UI.
can someone help me solve this problem..
For 4.3 Roms you need twrp 2.6.3.0 and not 2.6.3.3.
Flash it and let us know

Thans for you answer. I now got another one. "Unable to mount /data
unable to mount internal storage
I'm also not able to mount then by the menu.
Why do you need to mount internal storage?
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
After installing the right twrp version. i use ADB to push the image.zip to my phone. Then i use twrp install and browse to my sdcard where the image.zip is transferred to. when i click it it gives that error. By the way he also starts with error flashing zip.
Comlete error is:
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/M7_UL_JB43..
updating partition details
e:unable to mount /data
e: unable to mount internal storage
i fear for my device...
Please anyone who can help me?
what about to boot to Bootloader, connect to some tools like Hasoon2000 Toolkits (cannot post links yet, sorry) and format everything you got, than flash the recovery again and push the rom via adb
make sure you download rom without any downloader
do not worry, i bricked my one the same day i got it and took me two nights to make it work again it needs lot of trying and searching but eventually you fix it
Thanks for your reply, i flashed everything a couple times. I guess is have the right rom. i do worry cause i tried so many things. Thinking about sending in my phone to HTC today..

what exactly are you trying to flash, link please.
i tried so many things is don't know exaclty the links. I tried different custom recovery. CWM and TWRP. Since i don't have an OS any more i tried to install de M7xxx.zip
Is the error still unable to mount sdcard? If so, follow post # 3 in my Canadian stock link.. You may need to use a recovery closer to your HBOOT version.

Every time i try to flash an image it gives me the unable to mount error. I am trying to use the Stock 4.4 GPE nandroid rom as suggested by @ipfreelytech. Any suggestions? Thanks

go back where you downloaded the file and read the instructions on how to install it

From here you can figure out what RUU you need to get your phone working again

Well easy enough:
* Guru Reset ROMs, are installed the same way as any other ROM, by selecting "install zip" in custom recovery (CWM or TWRP)
* ruu.zip, are flashed in ruu mode:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip <name of ruu>.zip
fastboot flash zip <name of ruu>.zip <- yes TWICE
fastboot reboot-bootloader

I don't know of any 4.20.707.6 (or higher ruu's... there could be but i havent looked), otherwise you need to s-off (to be able to downgrade) and use:

EDIT, or this ruu.zip: http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/ruu-zip...0-13_10-33-1150-01_release_311678_signed-zip/
unless if you can find an RUU which is 4.20.707.6 or higher.

okay, so you have an "(bootloader) product: m7_ul"
so from the beginning
1- do you have TWRP 2.6.3.3+?
http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7
or

2- what ROM are you trying to flash?
3- just run WinMD5.EXE and drag and drop the ROM you're trying to install, it'll give you a funky number... you compare that to the place you downloaded the ROM from to make sure the zip isnt corrupt

i was just thinking maybe the reason i was getting this error "error flashing zip '/sdcard/rom.zip" is because my phone is S-ON and that the ruu i was trying ti install is not compatible with my phone. by the way, what is the bases of having a older version or newer version since it has 7 digits in it. what i know is that for S-OFF phones having 4.20.707.6 can install other ruus as long as it is x.xx.707.x, am i right? what are the possible higher version of my phone? 4.20.707.8 something or 4.21.707.1? just an, example

mate,
1- ARHD 53.0 is compatible with your phone, otherwise I wouldnt have suggested it !!
2- S-On / S-Off doesn't affect custom ROMs... you can deal with S-Off later
3- "i was getting this error error flashing zip '/sdcard/rom.zip" -> is because it's either NOT A ROM, or a bad download.... you CANNOT use TWRP for RUU
so in conclusion, for the time being at least, maybe longer(?), just to have a working phone: download ARHD 53.0
put that on your phone, and install using TWRP
when asked to "Wipe user partition" -> select WIPE

Your main problem is you do it the wrong way.
You cannot fastboot flash zip ROM.zip.
The same thing with your problem of trying to install an AT&T ROM to your ASIA WWE device.
What you need to do is :
1. Re-unlock your bootloader if it is relocked
2. Make sure you flash a right recovery for Intl one either M7_u or M7_ul
3. Download a ROM.zip either you want to use my 4.20.707.6 ROM.zip or ARHD or any ROM.zip but it must be the intl version not AT&T
4. You need to put the ROM.zip that you downloaded onto the sdcard
a- either use ADB sideload
b- or ADB push in recovery (but you must have the correct driver install to your PC and right ADB version too)
c- or the easiest way is use the OTG function in the recovery with an OTG cable where you put the ROM.zip on a flash drive.
5. In recovery, make a full wipe and select install and browse to the ROM.zip to install

I didn't not have an OS. It's just that the number didn't show up in the boot loader. This number turned out to be the firmware number.
As I had a nandroid backup saved I used that to restore functionality to the phone and thankfully it was ARHD which able to be S-OFFed using Sunshine.
Have you tried unblocking the bootloader again?

The missing OS version is caused by some versions of twrp 2.7.x.x recovery.
These versions have a bug that writes a bad instruction to the misc partition for bootloader messages, and inadvertently wipes your OS version number.
The only way to restore it is to flash firmware.

I have an OS version but when I flashed the ARHD ROM and rebooted it when it was shutting down it told me that the phone needed to have SuperSU installed and it asked if Imwanted to install which I said yes to but it didnt install anything instead it just rebooted and stayed in the boot screen for the longest so I turned it off and restarted it but nothing would happen same stuck in boot screen. Went into recovery re flashed the ROM and rebooted the phone when I did that it sais that there was no OS imstalled and asked if I was sure that I wanted to reboot the phone. So now I am stuvk at yhe bootloader, Relocked for some reason with S-On and I have no clue on what to do.

If you are not able to unlock your bootloader, then you will need to find a RUU to reset your phone.

ok, you have an M7U, you must pretty much have the latest version main otherwise known as firmware as your on HBOOT 1.57, it will also be the 401 firmware based on your cid, so my next question is, are you returning to stock for warranty purposes or you just want it working as im not so sure there is an RUU available for your device, however its my understanding, you can flash M7UL rom's, just the LTE parts will be skipped.

probably not as its initially built for the M7_UL, you'll be stuck with custom rom's now unless you can find an RUU and get s-off to enable back flashing, you have to be full stock, nothing custom or modified to get HTC updates, to be honest, most Dev's on here release the rom's before HTC do, take Lollipop as an example, ive been using custom rom's since day 1 of getting my device, most of them blow the stock rom out of the water.

strange that it didn't work, as you'll see here, M7_UL roms are fully compatible with the M7 U http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2223236

Don't know how I missed that one , yes I very much expect that's whats wrong, however, how did that happen ?
should be able to fix it by flashing the firmware for your device, however that leads to another problem, no baseband, no version main = which firmware.
All I can suggest at this point is try all of the 6.09.401.x firmware from the link below, start with the earliest one (6.09.401.5) if it fails try the next one up, when one of those install, stop there, the 6 series firmware's came with HBOOT 1,57, if they are older than your current firmware they will fail, if its the same as your current firmware it will install, don't forget each firmware must be flashed twice, first time will say please flush again immediately (flush is HTC Typo, they meant flash), also your bootloader must be locked or re-locked to flash firmware whilst s-on.
on another note, you will need to open each firmware that you download and edit the anroid info txt file, change the model id number in that file to the same number as your phone, then save and flash.

Try flashing the firmware, it will contain the radio, that's your best bet, again make sure the bootloader is locked or relocked then issue these commands:
fastboot oem rebootRUU (screen will go black with silver HTC logo)
fastboot flash zip "name of firmware".zip
fastboot flash zip "name of firmware".zip - yup twice
at this point make sure it says successful at the end, if so:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
