check out the article in businessweek.com/technology/ regarding honeycomb source (sorry, not enough posts to add links to my thread)

This actually kind of makes sense. By not releasing the code, Google can control what kinds of devices actually run Honeycomb. Look at how many extremely crappy Froyo tablets there are out there from hole in the wall manufacturers. The hardware is crap. Performance is crap. The reliability is crap. It makes Android look horrible. If Honeycombs source got released today, you'd see crappy $100 tablets in Wal-greens running Honeycomb. They would suck huge monkey balls and make Honeycomb look horrible. People would buy the $100 iPad alternative, find that it was a POS, return it and never buy an Android device again.
I wish they would have released it though and done something else. Like maybe not allow any maker to use the "Android" name in advertising unless it met their requirements? Similar to what they do with the "With Google" on the back of phones.
Heck they could take it a step further and only allow phone manufacturers to produce pure Google Experience phones instead of wrapping it up with their own skin.
And this is why Richard Stallman is always, always, always right.
yeah this blows, a lot. Engadget has a good article too.
This is not going to help Android gain more market share. The money hats are sure working on Google.

By doing exactly what he said in his post. Not allow them to use the android name. Also, don't allow them access to the market and other google apps. They can't force OEMS to do anything, but they can give them incentives. I think them restricting the android name to google experience devices would be excellent. Ubunutu is based on Debian Linux, but you don't see them calling it Debian anywhere. In fact, if you didn't look it up, you would have no idea that Ubuntu even had anything to do with Debian. It's very similar, but it's been modified and is therefore no longer called Debian, just like sense, motoblur, touch-wiz and others should not be called android.
They already do that though. The $100 tablet you can buy at Walgreens doesn't have the Google name on it. Doesn't have the market or google apps. Still makes Android look bad. Besides, not giving them the Android name would be great for OEMs. They would drop it all together, call it HTC Sense OS or MotoBlur OS or whatever and the consumers would then be extremely confused.
I was upset about this at first, but it makes perfect sense. Like people have said, it makes Android look like crap. IMHO, Honeycomb is an embarrassment as far as polish when it comes to iOS. Get me right, I'm an Android fan through and through, but lacking polish and stability can really hurt Android right now. I'm sure we'll get the source eventually while it's still relevant. Remember, the first commercial device running that software is barley a month old...
I see a final SDK Honeycomb build in our future.
i assume we will never see a 3.0 aosp at all. it isnt meant for phones and i think google initally wanted to branch off but decided against that. and from seeing our development they have realized that >3.0 is bad for tablets and 3.0 is bad for phones. they know we will try to do it anyway and just discover that the other half (phones or tablets depending on version) is very inadequate so they plan on making ice cream the version of android that works on both
still sad that they wont even let us try to get it working, hell the preview release is running pretty well already, this " we decide what is good for you " stance is worrying from an open source os
By "indefinitely" I understand the exact release date is not definite. Thats all. Android >>>>>>>> iOS
Pretty terrible news. Really puts a mark on future android releases for the community. Really sad even if there are business reasons for it.
You can't have your cake and eat it too. They're either open source or not. They can't try to have it both ways.

Yep. I can't tell you how many times I've rolled my eyes at something he's said and considered it to be extreme but it's true.
They are probably just working on making it stable...
Remember, google is the forerunner for open source.

chome os( based off chomrium open source)
android(obviously linux)
Definitely disappointing. Would love to see my Nook Color running Honeycomb AOSP.
I don't buy their reasoning. I don't see why anyone would go rushing to put Honeycomb on a phone??? If anything it's all these cheap tablets running pre 3.0 that is making Android look bad.
This is pathetic!!!! So much for it being "Open Source"!!!
It's probably full of stolen code or something.

That's the point. Google is trying to avoid cheap tablets running Honeycomb. Let's be completely honest here. In terms of polish, iOS is a better OS than Honeycomb. That's to be expected given that Honeycomb is a first-gen tablet OS. Google is pushing it as it's answer to iOS though. They don't want it plastered on crappy ass tablets that barely run and definitely don't want it on phones that won't run it well at all. It would make Honeycomb look awful even though it's a very nice OS if it's run on a device that can actually run it.
Since Samsung has had their Android Wear version of their Gear watches announced (and available for order today), what's the odds of that ROM being loaded on our Gear 1 devices? I, for one, have not gone to Tizen yet in hopes of this taking place and it seems like we are on the verge of this happening. I know it will not be an official release, but something where a rooted device would be needed.
I second ur hopes - held off on Tizen for the same reason
Whether or not Android Wear's better than Tizen all depends on which apps you use on your phone. Android Wear (like Google Now) is dependent on using Google's apps and services. Most of what Now reports off of is scraped from Gmail. I don't use Gmail or any Google apps I don't have to so Now and Android Wear are useless to me and those like me. Most corporate/professional users that use MS products, Exchange, and connect to secure networks (which typically limit apps used for personal use) aren't going to be Android Wear candidates.

I'm sure it'll fit perfectly with gear 2. I see the .tar having the drivers for the watch it's a dependent of
I would be very interested in a Wear port too.
As far as I can see, not too many things have changed on the Gear live compaired to the Gear 1.
Sure, the CPU would be faster but the screen and memory size are the same.

It's a discussion forum, no? Everyone here is a wearables early adopter so are interested in whatever comes next. And not everyone here uses their devices the same way or wants the same things. Other than blind fanbois who clearly have no objectivity, I enjoy hearing people's different views; even if I don't agree with them. Your post added less to this discussion than mine did. People wetting themselves over something no one here knows the functional value of (yet) is the height of fanboi-ism. Android Wear could change the world as we know it. It's going to take more than a five minute conference dog and pony for that to happen.
A discussion by folks who want wear not about discussing why someone doesn't need nor want-not a fan of any particular aspect - just bored with Gear 1-if motor 360 looks good I'll purchase, if not then wait a while
Does it only work with Samsung products, I have an invite for an one plus one I want to know if it'll work with the phone too?

I have been waiting for Android Wear to be released. I believe it would be a wonderful fit for the galaxy gear 1. Let's not forget the functionality of the gear 1 using the Null ROM....android based. Today's conference reiterated how coding would not be that much different for normal Android code. Sounds promising to me.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using XDA Free mobile app
From earlier discussions and threads I believe Android wear requires a 4.4 based Rom to operate. The Gear 1 Roms and Null Rom are 4.3 based. The real hurdle will be getting a 4.4 Rom on the Gear. The Devs and contributors on XDA are very talented so with this release of the Gear Live maybe they can accomplish it.
I am curious what the battery will be like on the Gear Live with the always on features of Android wear. The screen has to go into some type of low power mode for the 300mAh battery to last through a day. I also have a Qualcomm Toq that I picked up cheap on ebay, that uses a Mirasol Screen and only has a 240mAh battery. I get 4-5 days always on with it (even over night). The Toq has a tiny processor, runs a unique OS, and the colors are not vibrant, but it is a very capable demonstration smartwatch. I think there may be a future for more advanced Mirasol screens.
Anyway good to see some excitement over our Gear 1. I have enjoyed being an early adapter and experimenting with Null and Tizen on the watch. Maybe Android Wear is in our future.
I want to see this. I really need to get off of this touchwiz train. Wear works with any android at least 4.3.
Hey can someone help me unbrick my alcatel one touch evolve tmobile? I tried using adb and sdk but its not working correctly for some reason. It just says closed every time i try to execute a command... :/

Sorry i was refering to @Mr Ian B's question on watchstyler on Android Wear, didn't realize it could have applied to your original question in the OP. :cyclops:
Android wear was just announced yesterday, so it will probably be a while before devs can get their hands on a device, then another while before we see a port, only after that will we see if other features like watchstyler will be able to be ported onto android wear, should not be a major problem as both are of the same platform.
Personally I cannot wait to see a port of Android wear onto the gear1, I would like to see how my gear1 fares withe the screen on feature:laugh:

In terms of visual design, what is most likely going to change when Samsung puts Touchwiz on it? Do you think most of the card style interface will remain? what about the bright contrasting colour theme?

I assume not much since Google is doing its best to limit OEM skinning on android
Guys its too soon to talk about Android L now cuz it is still under development from google and after its release in Fall as they assume, Samsung will then take it and develop it itself to be compatible with touchwiz and all bloat ware then test and then release to public and in phases not all at once.
I assume it will take 6 to 7 months, maybe when S6 arrives will arrive with new android L.
I plan to start development for auto extension of L. However I am curious about supporting it from car makers. Did Google already shared info which maker will make HU compatible with Android L? What kind of interface do they plan to use? I assume BT isn't sufficient for transferring video.
1. Brightness slider in notification bar
2. Battery saver
3. Pop-up notification
4. DND
5. Knox
^^ All these above are already present in many Samsung phone. Stock Android have lot of catching up to do with OEM software in terms of actual usability.
UI tweaks for me is the last thing I am worried about.

Been thinking about all this - why would we want Android Wear when it doesn't offer phone answering, camera app, music, storage, etc.
Seriously, the more I think about it, the more I think it would seriously limit the device.
So why are so many people dead set on putting this on the Gear?
(because we can is not a valid answer)

Basically I would like to see a port of the 4.2.2 moving closer in Android versions to 4.4 and Wear. So we basically would have Android 4.4 with the Gear goodies and goodies of the Wear (basically Google Now).
Yes a straight Android Wear would cripple all the great features of the Gear 1 / 2.
Chris
I don't understand it eighter...
Hardware wise we have a perfect smartwatch, with more features than the newly announced smartwatches.
Ok, we don't have a round form factor but actually I like the size and wear of my Gear 1 a lot.
All the new smartwatches are not able to take and answer calls indeed. Don't have a own camera for taking pictures and video's.
Only thing they DO have, is the latest version of Android (Wear in this case, based on Android 4.4).
But looking at it closely, is our Android 4.2 so very different than Android 4.4 that we can't do normal stuff anymore ?
No, we can still do everything the new smartwatches can (software wise then).
I have Null_23 on my Gear 1 and more than happy with it !
Not going to switch to Tizen or buy another watch....mine is just perfect !
I love the way my gear is with Null ROM...
Is there anyway to get google now working on the gear 1 that would make me so happy...
Has anyone tried side loading the google now launcher?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Yes, Google Now launcher works if sideloaded, but you also need a bunch of other packages to make it work. It's not worth it, honestly.
What really pisses me off about this watch is that it was rated worst product of the year by Engadget. Really?! Who's pocket are they in? Now you have a crop of watches with less features and they are being praised as revolutionary. Samsung was a true pioneer with this one. Yes, other watches also paved the way, but to be given such a terrible rep was completely unfair. It certainly needed improvements and was definitely a first gen smartwatch, but android wear went backwards! No phone, no camera, and in some cases, much worse battery life. I get it that the new crop have always on features but I was looking in the coveted Moto 360 forum and most were cutting that feature off...to save battery. Finally,I have never owned a gadget that got more compliments, questions, and attention than my gear 1. I still get, "Nice watch" constantly. So, did Samsung screw it up or make something brilliant? I'd say the latter, and I'm NOT a fanboy. I welcome someone who does a round form factor and improves on the gear 1 design.
Personally, I have been looking around at android wear products but I haven't been impressed by any of them that are currently coming to market now. The concepts look so much better than what is being offered like the Triwa Smartwatch concept. Samsung Galaxy Gear range looks and feels uncomfortable. Moto 360 had the right look. For now, I think I will stick with my Casio and Shark watches.

I don't see the appeal in a smartwatch either. Smartphones already offer us so much.

I honestly bought this watch on a whim. I thought it was a silly concept and literally walked out of Verizon with it on an impulse buy. My plan was to play around with it, and take it back, but then it quickly grew on me. I would feel lost without my watch now. People who haven't owned one don't understand. It sounds ridiculous to say you need an extension of your smartphone, but in practice, you learn to love it.

Exactly.... Never wanted or was interested in getting one, till they got cheap and I was away for business for 3weeks. Bought it as a toy to play with for my boring days at a hotel. And now I totally love it. Love looking at my wrist to see who is calling and then answering or ignoring it. Very handy . I also stopped my quest to load all kinds of sounds etc. I keep it on silent all the time. The vibrations are always felt. They even wake me with the alarm feature. I also cut back on all the notifications except the basics. Anyhow I'm extremely happy with buying it, and I wonder what I will do when this things kicks the bucket. I don't want a fancy time piece or a Wear device. Now if the next gen Wear devices have the stuff I have and use on my Gear then I'll take a look. But my must haves will be a speaker to talk etc. And a camera just because I can...

Unfortunately it's not that easy as you picture it...
Our Gears are running Tizen or Android 4.2.2 and in both cases the Gears need to be upgraded to Android 4.4 in order to run Android Wear.
But upgrading our devices to Android 4.4 is not that easy.
Besides the source code (for compiling) Android 4.4, we also need source for the drivers of our hardware (like camera, speaker, microfoon, etc).
Some source is open souce, like Android itself.
But other source code is so called closed source, source code owned by someone (in our case Samsung) which they don't publish on the internet.
Not having the correct drivers will most probably be a show-stopper for getting Android Wear on our Gears.
Unless a really skilled programmer can create drivers for the hardware, or we can get our hands somehow on the source code of the drivers.

Hi to all SM-G900F fans and for all developers!
I'd like to introduce this topic to discuss about the possibility of the Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F to have the new Android 8. Knowing about some amazing improvements that were made to the new Android 8 that will arrive soon, I'd like to know the following:
[ALL FANS] - What do you think about our S5 SM-G900F having an Android 8 ROM? With a booting time cut in half, with app performance increased in double, with drivers available to update, etc.? If that will be possible to the developers apply to the S5 SM-G900F, it would be great or not?
[ALL DEVELOPERS] - What do you think about the idea of creating an Android 8 ROM for a great 2014 phone? It will be possible to do that with all improvements that were claimed for the new Android 8? It will worth that huge effort?
As you can see I love this phone, no doubt about that. But, my wish is to have my Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F running Android 8 with all those features that were claimed to have in the new Android OS. If that can be possible, I think it would be amazing for this phone! Because I think the hardware is still good to support newer software and it would be very nice to see an excellent quality/price phone like this to match new ones.
I hope my wish can became true. . .please do not let this phone R.I.P!

"booting time cut in half, with app performance increased in double, with drivers available to update" Idk if it is possible, but it will be quite hard. If android 8 will come out, we developers WILL DO OUR BEST to get the best out of the s5. Seriously, we try our best but stop saying things like this, developers do this things without wanting anything in advance from you, SO PLEASE BE PATIENT! Yeah, you're absolutely right and I apologize for my behavior. I was only excited about that I just decided to try to share my feelings and thoughts with the XDA Community. I love XDA Developers. It teached me so much about everything related to Android over the years. However, I must follow all the rules and have a good behavior so please feel free to remove/delete this thread.
Once again, I'm sorry for having opened this thread. Just a BIG "thank you" to all developers for the hard work they always do and for all members that share doubts and solutions for everything related to Android.
Best regards,
Lu

It's alright to discuss about such things, but never push devs beyond what they can do. You simply show disrespect and it's one of the main reasons why devs give up creating something new.
Regarding Android 8 (Android O), I don't think it's going to be an easy task to port it to our device. At first, on Nougat was hard enough to make everything working (camera being one of the main highlights, since N has a completely revamped camera interface under the hood, like different process handling and stuff). I can't imagine, what O actually brings to the table and in no way it's going be a walk in the park.
And neither battery life nor camera is going to be as good as stock. Blame Samsung and Touchwiz for their closed source nature.
Even if it happens, camera will still suck. Why flash something that makes your phone worst and unstable, just to say that you have the latest android version in "phone about"
I don't know why you are so hyped about it, it has really small changes since Lollipop...

Of course not. It's about to have all the NEW features in your OLD phone (if possible, of course). I think there are several phones (like the Samsung Galaxy S5) that have plenty potencial to run newer software. Besides that, one teacher I had, one day, he told in the classroom that there's no limits when programming, it only depends on our imagination to create solutions. I'm nobody to say that his words are correct or not, but I believe if there's will and hope that things are capable to be made.

I'd love to see Android 8 on my S5. It is true and it will be always true that the stock TW camera is the best one. It has slow-mo and 1080p60 video (I know that OnePlus camera has 720p90fps slow-mo, but that's not that great comapared to the stock.) But in my opinion, for some picture shooting, it is a great camera with the stock Lineage camera as well. (Maybe one day someone can find Samsung's driver).
Besides that, the S5 runs great with the latest 7.1.2 Android, and I believe that it will run as fast (if not better) with Android O.
Definetly hope for an upcoming information, devs: take your time, make a great rom.
I don't see anything wrong with this topic? The guy just asked if it's possible lol He didn't tell you "MAKE IT NOW!!". About stock android 8 - no. Stock android is boring, even Samsung's version of KitKat has more features than the newest stock android from Google. But some sort of port from, let's say, the Note 8 or the Galaxy S9 would be awesome in my opinion. There already are S8 ports for the KLTE which work with little bugs that will be fixed soon (SkiesROM) or ones that don't really matter that much (DreamUX ROM). Hardware is more than capable. iPhones have super low hardware and Apple updates them for 4-5 years ahead. This means that 'old' 2014 hardware like the S5's can be used perfectly fine even in 2020...with the right developers. BUT, nothing beats official Sammy firmware. Sure, you'll get the new features from android O(reo?) and the new Note8/S9 but bugs are inevitable whereas TouchWiz 6.0.1 is fine in every aspect. I'll stick to my S5 until 2019-2020 and then buy a new S10 or S11 (xd). I just hope that Samsung bring back the features from the S5 like IR blaster, fingerprint scanner on the front, hover view in the gallery and video apps, etc. FM Radio won't hurt too (still envy my S3 Mini for having it, 1%=3h radio) :|
