If you just want root use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276 and if you want a custom recovery + root then you can flash this via "Mobile Odin" (use the free version as you'll only be flashing a kernel) just extract the .zip file so you have one .tar file and flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108

ok maybe try again but instead of rebooting and losing root first install SuperSU or SuperUser then update the binary THEN reboot and see if that works. not sure if it will but it's worth trying.
EDIT: did you test for root after you rebooted because I'm not sure but sometimes the SU app icon is hidden.

For i9000 you should use SuperOneClick root tool, enable USB debugging, extract and open the tool and simply connect the phone while booted in OS (not download mode) it will root your phone through ADB.
It is more recommended to flash any custom kernel that will give you also custom recovery with which you can make a nandroid backup.

you have to flash a kernal with CWM in it using odin first.
Then:
1.) put the firefly zip file on the root of your SD
2.) boot into clockwork, and flash by selecting zip on sd card.
What did you use to root your phone? Z4 doesn't work for me.
Root via Upate.zip
Try this if you don't want to use a one click
DL the file attached
Rename it Update.zip
Copy TO ROOT of internal SD
Reboot to recovery
Install
Reboot
Superuser Granted
which kernel do i have to flash? for firefly
I tried "one click root", "Super one click" on my office's XP but never worked. I came home and repeated "Super one click"on my window 7, it just worked and I see the superuser icon there right away.

Follow the instruction in the website:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
You can put back the appropriate kernel into your SGN.
Can it be possible that my rom kingdroid 1.6 cant work with this kernel?
franco kernel ics(r1/r2/r3) is ok for ICS stock rom and also for kingdroid ICS

If you can paste a file into the system folder then you have root. You need a root file manager like es explorer available free in the Market. You need to go into the setting of this program, enable root and allow write on the system folder.
I checked and my phone is rooted, when im trying to flash the kernel from cwm app it says zlmage not found.
Whar should i do?
Install a kernel using the odin?
Can u just extract zimage and flash it using mobile odin... pc odin wud increase the flash counter and even bring triangle with exclamation on boot screen...
OK, that's what i did,
i downloaded the r3 kernel zip, turned it into a tar file using this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644240
flashed via odin and that's it. everything is back to normal, i can enter the recovery
By the way, that yellow triangle, i got it since my first custom rom, what that means? and the counter to?
Thanks for the help guys.
that means, your warranty has been voided if you show up to a service center with that yellow triangle. there are ways to remove, but that includeds re-flashing kernels and/or roms, removing the triangle notice (and flash counter) and doing everything from scratch.
search the forum.
Can any kind soul guide me as how to flash CF Root Kernel and CWM using Mobile Odin? Can't seem to find any instructions on it...
Btw the way i'm from Singapore & i'm on stock ICS rooted ROM XLP9. Any benefits from flashing the CF Root Kernel and CWM? Sorry i'm a nood...
& i find that rooted ICS on stock ROM on our Note not very stable. Now sms on driving node not working. It doesn't read out the sender's name or number anymore, but on others like calls & alarm it works. & a lot of apps after restoring using Titanium Backup, they dun work anymore. When u click to open the apps or games, it will hang for a while on a black screen followed by an error message after a while saying "Unfortunately the "name of app or game" has stopped. Then i have to click "ok" to continue... Any one experience all these after update to ICS???
A lot of t imes when i click on an icon to open the apps, it doesn't respond till i waited a while try again then the icon can be clicked to open it... Seems like everyday having new problem with the ICS ROM...
you say that your device is still rooted, so first of all you must buy mobile odin on the play store, then you can download the kernel here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784 and flash it with mobile odin

You can flash CF Root with Odin on your pc but that will increase the flash counter and show a yellow triangle when booting. Or as Vampireblood above already stated buy Mobile Odin Pro from the playstore and flash it with that app.

Place the downloaded cf root kernel on you external sd card. Go to MobileOdin and select Open file, select cf root. Tick: EverRoot, Inject superuser, Inject Mobile Odin.
Then flash firmware, select wipe cache.
Done
How do i know i have install CF Root? I follow chainfire's instructions using already rooted.bat to install CF root fpr my LP9 Kernel. But after everything done, i go Setting, About Phone, my Kernel is still the old 1!

Should have waited for your instructions bro! Now i messed things up! any remedy? Now my CWM click on it open, no response, hang. Mobile Odin Pro same hang. When open keep showing Loading... Checking SuperUser support...
Sob...
I followed everything via this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147852 and successfully flashed CWM to my GT-I8190.
The problem arises when I attempt to boot into recovery mode. Every time I attempt it, I am taken to the stock android recovery screen and not CWM. I've tried different versions of Odin... the touch version of CWM.. using a different computer... all to no avail.
I even downloaded Rom Manager thru Google Play and attempted to flash/update CWM from there (as it said it was, indeed, installed on my phone) but it wouldn't let me reboot the phone into recovery from Rom Manager - I imagine because I am not rooted.
I'm attempting to root my phone and flashing CWM is the first step. Like I said, the flash was, indeed, successful but the problem is that it always takes me into stock recovery instead of CWM.
Thanks in advanced, guys!
try another custom recovery, for example this one.
Wait until Odin says "success" and then reboot into recovery via Vol+ Home and Power

Same deal, xXPR0T0TYPEXx... I extract the .zip to find merely an image file.. I tried it with Odin anyway but Odin will not recognize it.
Hmmmmm.... I may have to go with vROOT if you tell me it's safe to use.
Another way of root is by flashing unsecure kernel. You can do it easily by Android Toolkit.

The file that you download is a .zip file, not a .tar file.
