[Q] Urgent help needed please - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
hi guys, am really desperate, helpless & feels like dying. my problem is.... a heavy knife (Gerber http://www.gerbergear.com/Military/Knives/06-Automatic-Knife_30-000850) fell on my Xperia Z1 & cracked my screen!!! :crying: the screen looks like it has a hole but when toughing it I feel nothing, unfortunately I can't unlock the phone coz I have it locked with a pattern to keep nosy people away from my private stuff of my family. Screen touch is a mess! it's not working & behaving like crazy jumping from camera to anything you can imagine, I tried connecting the phone to my PC to take my private stuff out of it but failed because the screen is locked & I have to unlock the phone first, second; I can't take my phone to the repair shop coz I don't trust any body on my private stuff & am dying to keep eyes away from those private stuff, so am kinda stuck between 2 living hells... am really mad, the feeling is beyond words coz I spent a lot of time to save the money to buy this 2 months old phone & now this happened.. is there anything to be done??
Only way I can think of is to lose all your content and flash the device using flashtool or sus

Your warranty is already void m8, cracked screens are not covered by warranty (at least not in the UK anyway)
You could use the USB OTG cable and attempt an unlock with the mouse in an effort to retain your data.
Or you could hold power vol up and down and power it off, plug it in whilst holding vol down to get to flashmode and flash an FTF using flash tool.
To do that just open flash tool, obtain an ftf file which you know you can flash, then click the lightening bolt, select flash mode and flash the thing.
But like i said because your screen is cracked, warranty isn't going to cover it anyway (unless you're in a location with a very generous warranty service) insurance is more than likely your best friend right now, in which case it won't matter if your phone is modded or not, with that in mind, your data is your only pitstop on the way to getting a new phone.

this is really a brilliant idea, never crossed my mind coz I was really depressed & can't think straight, thank you; one question regarding this matter, is my phone capable of powering up a simple PC mouse?

I know my warranty won't cover this incident & they are not generous at all here in Jordan!!
Regarding flashing the device, to tell you the truth am not an expert in this matter, infact never did it before & I don't know how & where to obtain the right FTF for my device so am confused about the whole idea of flashing, guess trying to access my data with an USB OTG cable is a more easier approach for me but am not sure if I have to unlock the screen first to enable this feature in the device!!!
To be honest with you, I've been watching too many youtube videos about how to replace the screen with a new one using the the right tools, it's a bit tricky & it needs expert & delicate hands of a surgeon, but I guess I have nothing to lose. Since yesterday I've been looking for a replacement screen & found some on eBay for ~160$ including the replacement tools, my only concern is the waterproof feature of the phone coz replacing the screen includes removing some special adhesive tapes/stickers & honestly am not sure where to get the original replacements for these tapes!!! I found some of these adhesive tapes on eBay but am not sure about the quality of these & I found different kinds/layers of tapes for the device?!! Second, am not sure which part of the screen is broken in my device, I have uploaded pictures of my device on flickr to give you a clue

so,
1- which part of my screen is broken & need to be replaced?
2- replacing the screen won't guarantee a waterproof device??
3- Should I do it my self or just buy the required screen, the tools & the adhesive tapes & give the whole stuff to a repair guy?
Am thinking of repairing the device & selling it, I know I might sell it for half of the purchase price but a new Xperia Z1 or even a new Z2 would add back a smile on my face
Sorry for making this long.. much appreciate your sympathy & help

My guess is that both the front glass and the LCD below is broken, otherwise you'd be able to use the touchscreen, theres a protective screen over the front, i'm thinking that is the reason that you're not feeling shards of glass poking through.
Prices for the screen can't be cheap, heres one on amazon, no reviews and only one available, couldn't tell you that it's authentic or not.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Display-Scr...589979&sr=8-10&keywords=z1+replacement+screen
There are probably more people on here who know more reputable places to buy screens, i've never had to before so i'd be guessing m8.
As for the FTF's here is the mega collection thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469191
Grab one for your phone from there and make sure to match the hardware up, so for example I myself have a C6903 so I will only ever flash an FTF for that hardware, doing otherwise could brick your device.
Flashing an FTF on lets say 290 to your phone will put it back to stock.
Flashing with flashtool is easy.
Download the firmware of your choice, lets say 290 for your hardware
Put it in the firmwares folder which is in the flashtool installation directory
Open the tool
Turn off your phone, (HOLD POWER AND VOL UP AND DOWN UNTIL IT VIBRATES THREE TIMES) then connect your phone whilst holding volume down and it'll put the phone into flash mode, nothing will happen on the phone but it may make a dink connection sound on your computer and flashtool will say device connected in flashmode.
Click on the lightening bolt
Click flash mode
A list will appear
Select the firmware you just downloaded.
Click flash.
Let it completely finish, if nothing happens or your phone tries to reboot, then repeat the turn off your phone step and allow the flash to finish.
Don't whatever you do unplug during the flashing process.
Thats all from memory m8, there are more detailed tutorials on XDA which you can follow, theres more than likely one in the MEGA Collection thread which i posted above.
Read up on it, but this is generally the way to do it.
As for fixing it yourself, I don't know how skilled you are m8, in all fairness I would get a quote from Sony how much they'll charge to fix it, at least that way you would retain some form of warranty. Going to a registered Sony engineer would give you the chance to put your case forward and most likely get the best price too.
But that's up to you m8.
Good luck.

well, I can't use the touchscreen because it's messed up that's why I can't unlock the screen which is locked with a pattern like I stated before.
For the part of having a registered SONY dealer here in Jordan yes there is but am not sure if it's registered & I don't think they have the skills to deal with an issue like this (at least guarantee a preserved waterproof feature after repairing the screen) because my sister's Xperia Z suddenly died, so she took it to this dealer & they told her the main board is dead, so they tried to repair the device (by installing a new board) instead of giving her a replacement, after 2 weeks of waiting she received her repaired device completely messed up: scratches on the back cover, back cover installed upside down !!! & they lost the SIM tray !! so she & I returned back to them & started a fight (not a fist fight lol) & we asked for the manager & after 2 hours of conversations they agreed to give her a new one. My point is, I think these dealers are SONY certified dealers to sell their products but they are not skilled to fix a thing though they claim the capability to do so!! Just for the record, if I want to buy this screen here in my country it will cost me 300$ for the screen only not the repair service, that's why am thinking of getting it from eBay/amazon...etc & try to do it myself or give it to a non-SONY repair shop coz we got smart repair guys that work in their own private workshops. Things here is my country are a lot different from the UK & many other countries that's why when an incident like this happen we suffer a lot & most of us ended buying a new phone on installments or cash if they are rich enough which is not my case!
For me having the skills to do it, well... I have great skills in assembling PCs, some PC software skills, I fix basic house electric & water problems when they occur, & when it comes to maintenance/repair am always patient & delicate & I don't start repairing things blindly, I make my own search, read repair tutorials & watch videos for these particular repairs & then go step by step repairing & I don't care if I spend 1 hour to finish an 8 min job, as long as am doing it right it doesn't matter. There are too may videos on youtube & they are pretty helpful in the matter of replacing my screen, all I need is the right tools & the guts to do so.

You don't need the touchscreen to do what i said.
If it were me in your position, i would do a good bit of research and bite the bullet and do it myself.
OR
Get those guys to do it, if they are registered Sony engineers then they represent Sony on a business level, which means liability afterwards is directed at them if something unrelated happens to the phone like a certain component misbehaving which could be directly related to what they've done then you're clean and they're to blame.
I'd be hesitant about going to a third party as they're more likely to give you the finger if something goes wrong afterwards.

I've ruined my device....is there anything that can be done?
Even worse, its a MDA Compact V. Basically, I got the newton rings issue a few months ago and after reading threads on here, tried the duct tape trick which worked a treat....for about a month. Then the issue came back of the screen not responding, so I continually used the tape to fix the screen. It got to the point where I had done it that many times, I was having to carry a roll of tape around with me, and the front of the front facia began to lift on the left hand side of the phone each time I did it. It got to the point where I didnt need the tape anymore, I could just use my fingernail to pull the layers apart which would make the screen respond again. However, recently I noticed a spec of dust under the screen. I put up with it for a while but last week I decided to try and get it out. I stupidly lifted the layers apart and blew into the phone. This caused the touchscreen to behave very erratically and did not move the dust. I was a bit tipsy at the time and actually lifted the whole of the front off the phone (thinking I could clean the screen and stick the front back down) but now the phone will not respond to touch no matter what I do. I was thinking of trying to replace the front parts myself, but as mentioned its a Compact V not a D2, so the shape of the front of the handset is slightly different and I cannot seem to find anywhere that I can order the front facia. I've got a lock on the phone, so I cant even flash it if I wanted to sell it as 'broken' Can anyone think of ANYTHING that could help? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
You can flash your phone if you just put the Rom on a storage card and update it from there, and new digitizers are just 4 dollars, so just put a new one in ( or I can do it for you if you pay for the costs) I've replaced my digitizer about 3 times now... and im pretty good at it XD
i really hate to say it. but i think its just time to buy a new phone. I know money may be an issue. i dont have the cash to fork out for new phones either. but if this happened to me. i would do my best to back everything up. then just buy a cheap phone untill i saved up . i have an htc pure right now saving up for an evo 4g. I just upgraded my contract so i will have to pay full price for the evo 4g around $500.00 . unless ya can limp this one along . but from what it sounds like is its about time to bury that one ... devices messing up does suck, im sorry.. Good Luck

[q] my z1s screen is cracked!
I don't know why, but I'm sure I didn't do it. My Sony Xperia Z1s C6916, which I bought from T-Mobile USA, suddenly had a crack in the screen, across the screen, left to right. The screen now is unresponsive and keep reading wrong touch controls. I cannot use it anymore. Now I google it and found it's a well known problem amongst the Xperia Z series user, and that Sony, most of the time, won't recognize that is a manufacturer defect, and won't repair it under warranty. As much as I hate it, I need to get it fixed. Question is.... to those with a similar problem, did you send your phone in to Sony for Screen replacement on any Z series ( Z, ZL, ZR, Z Ultra, Z1, etc.). To those who paid for the repairs, how much was it? I just wanna know because a local mobile phone repair shop can do it for $150 USD, more or less. However, as much as I would hate the Sony right now, I trust them for repairing on their own products, resealing it the water-resistant ways, Though you can make sure that I'll treat it like any other phones, water-resistant or not. What I'm concern about is the cost. Xperia Care online are idiots who can't tell the difference between a Sony Xperia and a Samsung Galaxy. Also, I contacted Sony via email, twitter and facebook. I asked how and where to send the phone in. None have reply. on via email, they gave me the reference number. What I need is for them to open a case, RMA form and number, and an address for me to send it to. They are taking it awfully slow and I'm hating them for it. If I could choose, I would want to send it straight to Sony HQ in Japan for repairs.
Have you tried calling them? Their customer service is very good. Sent from my C6916 using xda app-developers app
I have to deal with support of various manufacturers daily (working as an it professional) In Germany it's like this: As end user your reseller must look at the case. If you bought it in a store go there and ask them. HOWEVER I've discovered that most of them are stupid and/or non cooperative. So your best chance is calling the Sony support. Go to their website and look up their telephone number. When you call them you most likely need to give them some kind of serial (imei). After, tell them your problem and you most likely will get a return sticker. Send in your device via mail and get a repaired (or new) I device about a week later. I've discovered that this way is the fastest and less troublesome way to deal with broken devices Sent from Xperia Z1
I'm in a similar situation. TMo US took one look at it and said they won't fix it, and then informed me that I didn't have device protection on my plan (thought I had, grumble grumble) so they can't do anything for me. Called their claims department, was again informed that they cannot do anything for me. Has anybody had luck with Sony HQ performing repairs? Or, has anybody had any luck with swapping over a clean screen and digitizer from another Z1s? I can follow teardown and rebuild guides to make the swap, and have all the small device tools necessary to swap the screen. Meanwhile, my wife has no phone until we find some solution ...

Click to expand... Click to collapse I sent my phone in to Laredo as well, my phone didn't have a warranty associated to it and they replaced the screen (along with some other parts) for free. If you want water/dust resistance, shell in the $25 for inspection / shipping and see what they'll charge you. For me they just repaired it without leaving an email or phone call. If they charge you an unreasonable price ($150 < x) then have them send it back to you and repair it yourself or have a third-party vendor do it for you.

The oem precut adhesive should not cause any problems with ruining your ip58 waterproof. I've done lcd swaps and it should be properly sealed if you use that. As I've read, brand new Z1s have leaked water aswell so it might be about luck. Sent from my C6903 using XDA Free mobile app

Click to collapse This just happened to my bf's z1s. He put it in his pocket when he got out of the car, walked into our apt, and when he took the phone out it was completely cracked and the screen was unresponsive. He's sending it out today be checked by Sony. The rep made it VERY clear that the "engineers" would look at the phone and determine if it was a manufacture defect or not. If it was a defect, they'd fix it and return it. If not, then they'll call and discuss repair options. You might not be able to tell from the photos, but the cracks are under the glass, and it's clear that it's not do to user abuse. Hopefully the "engineers" see it the same way. Posts like these helped convince us that sending the phone to Sony was worth a shot, so I just wanted to share our experience. I hope he has the same success you did with getting it fixed. I'll update in a couple of weeks on the verdict. PS: for anyone else that faces this issue, TMO insurance will not cover this without a $150 deductible. We were told that regardless of what caused the crack, they don't exchange phones with cracked screens. The TMO rep we talked to def didn't believe that the crack happened spontaneously. Don't waste your time.
[Q] Can somebody help me with a semi broken power button
Hey guys, good night/morning (or whatever) :silly: ,i'm here because i need help with my phone, months ago i was with the phone under the water, then one/two weeks later my power button got broken, the phone lock and unlock itself so many times, the volume buttons won't work correctly (but they work, u need to press them softly), and the camera button wont work (AT ALL) too... and i have no warranty (because they said there are a red dot in the sim slot), so, i saw the piece on ebay in like 10 bucks, The question is, can my self disassembly my phone? Do i need a special Glue or something? (I have all the screwers), can one of you guys help me? I will be pretty apreciatted THANKS :good: PS: sorry for my bad english :\

Hmmm, I need to do it myself because repair shops here they do that for like 50 Bucks, and the piece is only 10 bucks, so I'm saving much money, but risking my phone too :/ I'm a 17 years kid with no money haha, not working yet, that's because I didn't send it to the repair shop.
No body? :'(
I sent mine to Sony Service centre here in Singapore. My warranty covered it so it's free (despite having the liquid detector thing red). However it took me 4 and a half weeks for them to repair a freaking power button Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk

Click to collapse Don't worry, I know your troubles, im 14 and i'd repair my phone myself, im kind of like the risk it or always have it broken, i've taken computers apart before and back together but different from a phone since there's tinier screws more tiny parts and risk of breaking tiny little things lol, I should stop there since im probably scaring you, I would fix my z1 myself but then i wouldn't put it back in water because i wouldn't be sure if my phone lost it's tight seal ability or not, but first i'd watch lots of take apart videos for the z1, also have a computer next to you so you can review the steps, one thing i know for sure is you need a heat gun of some sort to take the back off, then from there more taking apart
3 failed Xperia systemboard repair attempts failed and what should I do. :(
So my latest of stupid fails entailed the attempt repair of my water damaged E6533 (this was because I decided to take it into a sensory deprivation tank. Which included pounds of epsom salts ouch). I actually took amazing care of this phone and it was in perfect condition and I was excited to use these forums to flash to my hearts content. ANYWAYS I tried drying the board as this happened in August and I left it powered off for approx 1 week in the sun, with more salts. At this point I was nearly sick to my stomach because of my stupid move for one of my most prized possessions. But somehow I kept going, I attempted to boot the phone again but alas no go, I had really fudged this this as salt is more conductive regardless of IP68 this is extreme salt I am such a [email protected]$$ I didn't want to admit it until now. But in hinds site it worked for the 2 hours I was in the salt water. Then for 10 minutes after. I then noticed it triggering touches all over the screen. Disregarding my own advice to everyone else I know I did the stupid thing at this point. I tried to turn it on even though it just shut itself off. It did and shut off again during bootup. I gulped as this birthday gift from a friend was turning out to be a "worst case scenario" type of ordeal. Next I kept going like a troubled child again and again I tried. Because in my mind I couldn't imagine how anything could have migrated into the phone. But it was to late ........ BECAUSE if anyone knows how these XPERIA repairs tend to pan out during display damage, you get the picture. Sorry to be so cryptic but for those of you who havn't had the misfortune or need to repair a broken display (*I assume the most broken physical feature of this phone but also any electronic device for that matter.) you may not be aware that the phone has fuse on the mainboard which during display malfunction clearly blows. Replacement of this fuse requires 1) a schematic 2) advanced soldiering knowledge and techneque 3) time 4) bravery ... so on . As it is quite small and actually requires prescission soldiering equipment (here's my fail, failure to use and therefore aquire the proper tool for the job). Yes my dumba$$ory didn't stop at epsom pools of waterdamage but a soldiering technique regardless how good shouldn't have been attempted here. Although I did manage to bridge the fuse to see that YES INDEED the screen came back when bridged and it continued booting. Something prevented me from getting my soldier bridge to actually stay attached so eventually I broke an adjasent resistor. WELL good luck fixing that !!? But for me I have seen this before. With my Z2 last year. I loved that phone but despite the love Mei case it smashed on the pavement. Screen replacement resulted in fuse replacement. WHICH in turn resulted in a SUCCESS followed by failure short after. Another friends Xperia Z, same thing : LCD - > FUSE -> in this case I tried AliBaba'ing the board. Which was the ONLY place I could source one '.' With the new board the GPU seemed to have damaged video memory as the screen was getting serious interferance and shaking everywhere. Putting the original board in the same position resulted in no backlight but no shaky image. DOA part ... SO ALAS I HAVE a graveyard of Z , Z2 , Z3+ dual and extra parts ... Each time I try Xperia I get hella burned trying my luck fixing a phone I would love to be loving right now. If only I could only figure out a way to fix the lot I would in a heart beat. But most places online seem to be more pricy than the original or unreasonable. <shrug.> :crying::silly:

Well there are Sony shops where you can take them but it'll cost a fortune and most of the time they doesn't have the parts so, maybe you should sell them as repairing parts on the Internet and get a little juice of them Click to expand... Can flashing any frimware/software change IMEI number? [changed board @repair shop? ]
I know stuff like converting devices from htc sense to google play edition and so on friend of mine took his phone to a repair shop for screen replacement but they were unable to change screen as they claimed new screens didn't work on it and they tried flashing a frimware ,[it was sprint frimware as i checked with the old broken screen ] so he called me if i knew a good place to fix his phone , so i took it to a phone shop i know , they replaced screen camera was not working after I received the fixed phone , it had same sprint frimware as the old one i checked the imei it was Sprint one , so I called him and asked if he have the phone box and send me Imei labeled on the box. it was different imei , they changed the board right? [as this board camera is not working ]

Click to collapse They might have changed the board. Flashing the firmware sounds like a cover because someone didn't want to admit their mistake and eat the cost. They might have found a model like the one in question and used it as a donor. IMEI not the same as the box is almost proof. More correlating numbers are needed to prove that. Still might not be able to prove a board change without disassembly and inspection because of the firmware flash.

Click to expand... Click to collapse Hope you got a receipt for the service and kept whatever paperwork you signed for the work done. Hope you took pictures of the process. Taking it to another cell phone shop for them to disassemble and check would have been better as they are independent of the initial problem. Take your proof to them and ask them to replace what they messed up with a "non-hacked" together phone. They will lie and try to turn the issue around or just deny it all together. I would let them know that it is a safety liability issue with no heat shield, screws and taped down parts. They are legally liable if the phone catches on fire and burn a house down because of their shoddy work. A mechanic is responsible for the damage to a car if he didn't repair the brakes as any mechanic would is responsible if the brakes go out and a accident happens. Same principle here except with phones. All expenses you made/make to get the phone to a proper condition need to be reimbursed by them. All other expenses need to be made by them to correct the mistake they made. Do it right or do it twice, bottom line. Don't take a replacement from their stock because you know what type of work they do. If they don't want to get it right, blast them on the internet so no one will go to them. Keep it simple and business and don't make it personal with attacks. Just state the facts. Get them to publicly lie or admit their mistake. You can write to them also to get a paper record of what happened. Doubt that they will write back. You need some type of record of what happened. This might be enough to get them to replace it with something not from their stock or enough proof to take to a court. You might get expenses plus damages. I'm no lawyer, just what I know from repair work on cars and computers. I have broke simple stuff and had to buy new parts not related to the repair just to do the repair I was paid for. That's the nature of repair work no one likes to talk about. No one likes to be taken advantage of. I'll be shooting for a new phone or money to get a new phone.
