Question.. I went to restore a backup I made on my unlocked bl moto in TWRP. After a couple minutes it said FAILED. I tried a different backup that FAILED. I went ahead and booted. I was still running same rom, and all custom apps I had installed as system were there. I just list all my data. Anyone know why? I have a nexus 7 and HTC one; they restore just fine. First time I restored on my moto x. Thanks anyone that may of had similar occurrence.

One of the features I thought was really good about 5.0 was when setting up a new device or after a factory reset, one had the option to restore from another device from a Google Cloud based image. One could also choose which apps to reload as well.
I thought that this was great. I wanted to try it when I received my new Moto X 2014. When I received my Moto X, I updated to 5.0, rebooted, then did a factory reset before booting back to the new device. Upon reboot, I was greeted with the 5.0 startup screen. I went through the process, skipping Tap n Go. Then it came to sign into your Google account. After signing in, I did not get the page with the option to setup from a previous device. Instead, I get the Moto Migrate app.
I factory reset several times to ensure that I hadn't missed anything. I always got the Moto Migrate app, rather than the 5.0, restore from a previous device screen.
My question, did Moto Migrate take the place of being able to restore from a cloud based image of a previous device?? I really liked the idea of images being stored in the cloud and being able to restore from them after a factory reset. This seemed that it would really take the pain out of a factory reset. What gives? Did I miss something?

I have the same exact issue. What did you end up having to do to fix this? It seems everyone stopped posting on this issue.
That is what happened to me too when I got the phone. I think Motorola is using the Moto Migrate in place of Google's system which is a shame as you need to physically have the other device with Moto's system. You could always try using a 3rd party app for backup and restores like Helium. They aren't the best or easiest but they can be better than nothing.
Yup for me the same, restoring original fw and doing factory reset no window told me to restore from an other device. Such of info appear with custom rom where moto apps are not installed
So, after installing SuperSU and finding out it breaks my phones ability to send MMS for some reason I decided to do a wipe and restore to my older backup that I have. Well dumb me wiped ALL of data which then wiped out my phone, so if there is anyone who could send me a clean Republic Moto x 2013 rom or just the system and boot files I would be greatly in your debt. I still have access to TWRP so I am able to restore to any files I am given. Thank you.

Flash that in recovery and you should be fine. It is rooted, but you can un-root from within the superuser app if you want a stock rom.
Took a huge gamble and tried to upgrade from 4.4 to 5.1 with this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/xt1053-retail-stock-lollipop-flashable-t3155843)
ROM was working great, but I lost native tethering which I need for work. Tried the Xposed Moto X Tether app but that didn't work.
Welp, it was a good thing I made a backup before I flashed to 5.1, so I decided to do a restore. TWRP got past the Restoring Data part, but is now stuck on the Wiping Cache part...
I factory resetted prior to doing the backup restore.
Does anyone know how I can restore my phone properly? Hoping I didn't brick it...or else I'm going to have to call the office tomorrow and have some explaining to do
My phone is a rooted Dev Edition on Verizon if that makes any difference
What version of TWRP are you using?
2.3.xx if I remember correctly?
I'm pretty sure it's quite outdated as I haven't touched it in a good year or two.
Hi, so basically I am trying to root two identical moto e4 plus phones (I have to double check the build numbers, but i am pretty sure they are identical). I did this by unlocking the bootloader, temporary (not permanently) flash twrp, back up the system by twrp, then flash magisk.zip, following the guides I found on this forum.
So the first phone is now rooted without any problems. The second phone always gets stuck when starting the backup in twrp (it stops at "updating partition details"). I wonder why because everything seems to be "identical". Anyways my question is, since the purpose of backing up is in case anything got messed up, would the back-up of the first phone be good for the second phone too? So I can skip doing the back-up on the second phone and go straight to flashing magisk.zip?
Also since there seems to be a problem with twrp on the second phone, would there be a problem with it flashing magisk.zip? I just don't want to get to the point of no returns if I can help it. Many thanks!
I tried searching for an answer but found nothing that applied to my problem.
I was able to put TWRP on my tablet and since have been trying to decide which ROM to run. I had 17 installed and messed up installing 16. I had backed up 17 but when I attempted to restore the backup it failed. Did I skip a step?
I wiped everything except the SD card before attempting to restore. Do I need to do more? It has been a few years since I last backed up and restored a phone. I've never done this on a tablet before. My phone was, I think, rooted. The tablet is not rooted.
