To answer your questions, 1. No need to install a kernel first. You are rooted.
To back up efs folder use es file explorer from google play. Save the copy to the desktop computer. Flashing can erase this folder. It is extremly important.
2. Do a full wipe-- cache, dalvik, factory reset.
3. Follow the instructions in the roms op.

I've been running terenceng's rom on my other tab. The rom runs very smoothly. Especially if you go to art. Just know there are a few bugs. Camera, video, gps and mobile data are not working. Just read the OP for specific device install instructions and follow them. You might have to flash the rom 3 times for it to work.

Wait,what
Camera ,GPS and Video seems to be working I guess on P-1000
And for ART we have to resize cache partitions if I am not wrong
(Both for latest builds)
Are these working in latest official Cyanogen Nightlies

The camera and video can be worked around by downloading a app off google play. But, there will be no video out. FC. There is no GPS or data, due to the kernel being highly experimental. If you have the p1000 gsm version, i think you have to resize the cache partitions to flash the rom. Kit kat is too big for any Gapps to fit in. You have to resize to make room for both.
Check the OP for instructions.

[Q] How do i flash a custom rom?

I have been searching around and can't find out how exactly I should go about flashing a custom ROM on the Hero. Yes, before anyone says it, I am a noob at this, and this will be my first time flashing a ROM(if i could ever figure it out). I have the latest stable version of CyanogenMod 7, which i believe is 7.1.0, and the GApps package to go along with it. Both are on the root of my SD card. I rooted with Z4root, downloaded ROM Manager, and chose the setting to flash Clockwork Mod Recovery. Should I flash using ROM Manager, or should I boot into CWM Recovery and flash from there? If possible, does anyone have a video that could help me along with this? The video posted in the video thread for this device is down. Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks!
Boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery and flash from there.
BTW, I'm running the latest release candidate for 7.2. Works perfectly for me.
I ended up finding a video on how to flash through CWM. I also later downloaded one of the CM 7.2 RCs, believe RC2. Now my next question is, do I need to wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache if I update to a newer version of CM, like a newer RC of 7.2 or one of the early beta versions of CM9?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA
Wipe cache etc. when flashing a later version of CM7 over an earlier version. Do a wipe data/factory reset when flashing CM7 over CM9.
It has always been a safe route whenever you flash a new rom to just wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik.
Yes.

SGS i9000 ICS upgrade

Hi all, last night I flashed this ROM to my phone I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA and then flashed ICS_4.0.3_MR1-RC4.2_I9000 over the top. This all appeared to go well and booted up ok.
I then used TB to restore the backup of apps etc to use in ICS. TB ran as expected and the progress bar showed that all the apps had been restored.
From here I went to the launcher page > applications to check the icons were there and guess what ----- no piffing icons.
Searching the file system I could not find any reference to ANY of the restored apps from TB.
So !!!!!, what would be the correct way to restore a TB backup in ICS 4.0.3. Things like the sdcard seem to be in different locations also.
If some kind soul could work with me to resolve the problem that would be great. On or off list.........
If your TB backup was made with Gingerbread then you can't use it for restoring in Ice Cream Sandwich.

You could restore apps only, not data. There are several tutorials in the development section, for each custom I9000 custom ICS ROM, check them out.
Try another install, wiping again cache and factory reset and try to restore only apps, not apps data.

This applies for CM9 ICS, but is pretty general for other ROM's as well, unless they have specific requirements:
- First time flashing ICS to your Galaxy S (or coming from another ROM)?
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Reboot into Recovery using 3-button-combo
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon
WIPE again or Calendar Sync will not work.
- Upgrading from CM7?
Do a Nandroid Backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon
- Upgrading from another CM9 (or teamhacksung) Build?
Do a Nandroid Backup!
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon
Note: The upgrade process from CM7 to ICS is automatic, but downgrading from ICS to CM7 (or restoring Nandroid) requires flashing twice. Once from ICS and again from CM7's recovery.

Please note that this might not apply for your specific ROM and you might brick your phone if things go wrong.
Ideally try to find the specific instructions for your ROM.

Upgrading cm 7.2 to cm9

Hi everyone,
Newbie posting here.. I've had my share of flashing Roms a few times (say 4 or 5 times) but i stuck with cm 7.2 when they released the stable mod for the i9000.
Now i see that the cm9 stable mod has been released and i definitely want to try that out however, I'm not sure on how to go about it and I don't want to do anything stupid. Don't get me wrong, i've tried reading around through different sites and forums but all the mix and match methods of flashing and installing has gotten me confused..
My main question is, how do i flash to cm9 from cm 7.2? naturally i have cwm installed and can boot into cwm recovery. Am on the XXJVK baseband with the pawitp kernel. Not sure if i have to donwload new drivers (since the base ROM is going to change)...
Do i just place the zip file for the cm9 mod in the internal sd storage? could you guys help me out and let me know if this process is correct:
1) save zip file in internal storage (both cm9 and gapps)
2) do a nandroid backup
3) boot into recovery
4) wipe data and dalvik cache
5) install the package
6) wipe data and dalvik cache
7) install gapps
8) reboot
Once it boots up, i'm assuming it'll be running cm9 already.. could you guys help me out and let me know if this procedure's correct? sorry for the noob question but i'd rather just make sure and ask you guys first.
thanks in advance guys! cheers and more power!

wipe date
wipe cache
wipe delvik cache
then flash rom nd gapps
wipe cache nd delvik cache again.. good luck..
Best and most reliable way to do this is flashing through stock rom via Odin. Then flashing kernel with CWM Recovery via Odin. And only then flash CM9 via CWM.
thanks for the quick reply guys. will try it out tonight and update this post. hope all goes well.
cheers!

and if u want u can try chimera rom from team passion.. it s combination of cm9 and AOKP.. It s stable and fast..
took me less than 10 minutes to flash to cm9 and it's as snappy as i thought it was. now to fix up everything and check if everything's okay.
so far, wifi and network signal are working fine and dandy. might just have a go at that chimera rom.

EDIT: SOLVED :D 10$ for whoever can help me with Cyanogen

I am currently running V20a EURxx the one that everyone was downloading a while back, via the lg suite hack..
I have installed the all-in-one root tool and "think" i have rooted it but i found it to be very confusing
Cyanogenmod 10.1 (the one that came out yesterday) is what i want. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2238040

What are the steps i have to take? I have rooted and done custom roms in the past but am still kind of a n00b.. Please help a fellow XDA member

You have the steps right there in the first post. I'll leave some explanations
You need cwm (clockwordmod recovery) first. The easiest way to install it is via rommanager https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager&hl=en. Use rommanager to flash cwm.
Once cwm is installed. Then proceed.
1. Place cm-10.1-20130416-NIGHTLY-p880.zip and gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip in to your internal sdcard
- Download cm http://get.cm/get/jenkins/25315/cm-10.1-20130417-NIGHTLY-p880.zip
- Download gapps http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip
- Move the files to your internal sdcard
You need to be in cwm recovery for the next steps. To do this you need to power off your phone, Hold VolUp and Power Button at the same time to power on your phone. Wait till you get to cwm recovery console.
2. BACKUP ALL YOUR DATA with CWM Recovery
- In cwm console select backup. use vol+/vol- to navigate through the menus and use power button to select the option.
3. In CWM Recovery make wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache, format system
- These options can also be found in cwm
4. Flashcm-10.1-20130416-NIGHTLY-p880.zip from sdcard
- Still in cwm. Select Install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard -> navigate to where you put cm-10.1-20130416-NIGHTLY-p880.zip
5. Gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip from sdcard
- Still in cwm. Select Install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard -> gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip
6. Done
- Reboot
I'm not an expert, but that is how I did it.

Actually, the first thing you must do is unlock the bootloader. For now, the only sure versions are EUR-XXX (and to be clear, it's not enough that you installed the Euro-Open FW, your phone must have the software identified as EUR-XXX - for instance, german sim-free phones will be identified as 262-000, even if they install Euro-Open FW, and they don't seem to be unlockable as of yet).
So, check the software version (at system settings -> phone info -> software information -> software version) and, if it's Eur-XXX or something similar, you can unlock the bootloader.
If you're using the all-in-one tool, you just have to follow the instructions on it's thread to unlock the bootloader.
Only then can you install CM with the method akosierwin provided.
Okay i followed the steps and installed clockwork mod via the rom manager...BUT!
If i boot into recovery it says: LG Security,ERROR boot image signature, 5 seconds shut down something something...
Whats that all about? thanks for the fast reply's!
you need to unlock your bootloader first
Yep, unlock your bootloader first.
Here are the steps for that
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224020
Okay i unlocked the bootloader ( when im in the S/W upgrade screen it says unlocked at the top..) i have clockworkmod installed but i cant install anything... All the zips give: assert failed, status 7.. Now im in a bootloop. I can go into clockword mod but thats about it. I have tried other zips than the Nightlys from cyanogen but nothing works. WTF

In the general section there's a thread callled flashable CM 10.1 FIX P880 (or similar).
The status 7 error occurs because of a little line (p880 instead of x3 for device recognition).
Install the CM from there or try to reinstall CWM through ROM Manager (should be latest and working)
And don't forget the GApps (from goo.im or the thread with the fixed CM)

In the steps for installing CM, there is the advice to do a nandroid backup of the existing system!
Is it possible, after wiping and installing CM 10.1, to restore only data, so I would have all my Apps and Userdata back, or would this cause problems with CM 10.1 settings?
Has someone tried this already?
Is CWM after wiping and installing still present?

CWM ist still installed after CM 10.1 flash.
If you want to have your apps + data back install titanium,
though I don't really know about restoring a backup on CM
(but it's a different android so I think it wouldn't work)

Thanks, but I tried with Titanium Backup on V20a (after wiping and installing V20a over V10h) and not all Apps was correctly restored, settings of system, all the screens of Nova Launcher, the Widgets and their settings and many more was wrong or not restored, so I tried with restoring only "data" from CWM-Backup and it works perfectly...
Anyone tried this on CM 10.1?
Glad that it worked
Didn't know that.

[Q] How to fix ''fixed'' camera?

Hey there,
I'm using this Mardon's ROM -> [ROM][CM10.2] - modded - [stable-20140126]
links's here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2442024
I've got an issue with camera - I reboot to recovery, wipe data/factory reset, format/system, install ROM, install hotfix, reboot - just like in instruction. And when I try to record video with camera app (Gallery2.apk)- on high quality compression I see just grey colour screen and on lower qualities, there is a green colour, stripes, sound only.
I've seen that video recording should be working already couple of versions ago, so what am I doing wrong?
I'm using CWM 6.0.4.7, but before I was trying that on CWM 5 with the same result. Please help.

I would suggest you to flash this rom and hotfix again from CWM 5. It could be CWM 6 causing the problem as CWM 6 is still not stable. I know you have already done this, but as I have gone through the Mardon's thread, no one else had such a problem when flashed through CWM 5. Also there is a new stable release. Before flashing, do Wipe Data/Factory reset, Wipe Cache partitions, Mount & Storage>Format system, Wipe Dalvik Cache and Wipe Battery Stats. Do post your result. Hope I Helped

Dear friends,
Mr. Mardon released new stable CM 10.2 with included hotfix! I tried that with CWM 6 and... still same ****.
Then I did it your way - flashed stock ROM, root, install CWM 5.0.2.6, installed new stable release (in Submit bug section there was my post marked as ''resolved'') and - NOTHING!
The only change is that on ''extreme'' quality compression, I get same green stripes as on other qualities instead of just grey screen. One guy there (at least one - one who posted that too) has the same problem. It's really frustrating for me...
At this moment I have CM 7.2 adrenalin ROM in device and... thinking about future
What you mean, guys?

The only change is that on ''extreme'' quality compression, I get same green stripes as on other qualities instead of just grey screen. One guy there (at least one - one who posted that too) has the same problem. It's really frustrating for me...
At this moment I have CM 7.2 adrenalin ROM in device and... thinking about future
What you mean, guys?

I'm sorry to hear that it's not working. Since there is no change even after flashing through CWM 5.0.2.6, this must be a rom related problem. Since you already have 10 posts, now you can directly post this question in the corresponding rom thread so that the owner @Mardon can reply it. Please post the solution here nonetheless so that if anyone encounter the same problem, they will know what to do. Hope I Helped
