So I'm debating RMA's the N7 I have with Google Play. I have a slight screen raise (this doesn't bother me too much) as well as screen flicker that I notice in low lighting situations (mostly in chrome and maps).
Does anyone NOT have screen flicker? Or is this a software issue?

Hey, I believe the screen flicker is due to the auto brightness function of the device.
I personally don't like auto brightness at all, try turning it off in the brightness menu and see if you still get that.
I see the flicker quite often with devices having that function turned on.

Hmmmm well I guess the only thing I have to compare it to is my iPhone 4 which doesn't do this.
My eyes are usually sensitive enough to be annoyed by screen flicker in any respect. Certainly with overhead CFL lighting.
My 16GB Nexus 7 (2 days in my posession now) doe snot exhibit any sort of screen flicker whatsoever. This is in comparison side by side with my HTC Desire HD which also does not flicker.
The display actually has a very high quality feeling which I like.

Thanks for the feedback. So even in low lighting conditions, with auto brightness set to on, and scrolling around in chrome / maps, you screen never flickers or sort of rapidly dims?
I've noticed it. Only on white web pages or books. Very slight. I had two HTC One Xs that both had it. Its a Tegra issue and doubt we will see a fix. Gutted.
Its not the whole screen. Noticeable around text especially. Some weird refresh prob. Left side of my screen is also slightly raised. Not happy.

I definitely get it on the whole screen, maybe for a second or 2. Might do it 2-3 times per day at most.
double post - deleted
Happened to me, I just turned the auto brightness off and t was fine. Try it, it works.
I keep auto brightness disabled and I haven't noticed the flicker that I can remember but tonight I'll try to reproduce and check it both ways.
I disable auto brightness and use this app which is actually a widget. It allows you to UAW any edge on the screen as an invisible or barely visible slider for brightness. It allows for incremental 1% changes on a slider instead of the typical button/toggle widget and its always enabled if you set it that way which allows on the go ease of use no matter what app or screen is open.
Its helped me attain amazing battery life and always have quick access for setting it just right.

No flicker......no raised screen.
No flicker here. Although I agree with disabling auto brightness, not a fan of the effect that can sometime have.
just recieved 2 nexus 7's today, so far my one (16gb) is PERFTCY *touches wood* this thing is so awsome!! not a thing wrong with it and was shipped from USA to south africa... My dads one on (8gb) the other hand had a raised screen on the left which he has absolutely no worries with its not that bad, but so far we loving this devices ))

I understand that - I'm trying to gauge whether or not it affects ALL N7's, or is a defect.
Google Play is shipping me a replacement N7 to address the screen raise on my current one, and I want to make sure the replacement is 100% A-OK.

Make a poll if you're trying to do that.... But yes, I see flicker too, but only at very low backlight levels and seems to be when wifi is active. I haven't tested to see if it's just wifi, or wifi causing other things (disk activity, etc), but this is the general consensus so far in the other thread.
I've received much from xda-developers forum, so I wanted to give a little back.
My Nexus 7 8GB had the flicker issue and some screen separation on the left hand side, I contacted Google and did the RMA process, yesterday I received the new one, and the change in hardware has eliminated the flicker issue. I know many people are waiting, hoping it's a software fix (and there may be one), but there is definitely some hardware change that fixed the flickering.
The panel in the new Nexus 7 seems different, as the color temperature is significantly cooler than on my original Nexus 7.
I recorded a quick video, which shows them side by side, it's hard to tell unless you're running full screen and HD, but the flickering is visible. Hopefully this helps those waiting for a software fix not get stuck with a bad screen...
Other than the flickering problem, this tablet rocks!
Could you post your serial# and CSSN off the box?
Doesn't have to be your exact serial#...just a rough one. E.g., mine is 338Kish and it still has the flicker issue...
What makes you so sure there's been a hardware revision?
I have one of the first N7's shipped from Google, and it's flicker free.

I'm not sure there's been a hardware revision at all... It could just be two batches of the panels, one faulty? Or something else. All I know is that one panel is distinctively warm in color (the original) and has the flicker issue, and the other panel is cool and with no flicker. Maybe just a bad batch of panels? Or some of the other accompanying driver hardware? Assembly?
I'm just saying that a hardware change made a major and distinct difference for me.
When I get a chance I'll post the CSSN/SN.

My dads Nexus 7 16gb has quite a yellow tint to the screen and the left side of the screen is sticking up - although I don't think it flickers.. He's getting a replacement tomorrow although it won't be directly from Google. (Tesco's)
I'll post up whether the screen is any different.
This is good info. Once we get more confirmation that perhaps a RMA will solve the issue, then we'll see how good Google is at doing exchanges from the Play store. This entire issue has been so hard to pin down.
It would be nice if Google was more proactive about it and just offered a solution, but that is wishful thinking, I know.
Thanks!
PS my SN on a 16GB model that demonstrates the flicker is:
SSN: C60KBC226---
I just got off the phone. Was on hold for all of 2 minutes. The whole phone call was 8 minutes and 18 seconds. Hopefully it all works out.
heh I did the map test too and saw flicker and planning my return, but I saw some other users were saying tegra devices had this problem. so I turned OFF the wifi, and there was still flickering!
so.. before anyone jumps to conclusions maybe try the map scroll with wifi off

I had wifi on for both of them in the video, brightness set to the lowest setting, and the auto brightness checkbox off. It was happening to me in all applications, the map just seemed the easiest to reproduce in, so it may actually be related to the wifi receiving/sending data.
The new one does not have the issue at all.
can you try them both with wifi off?
I just got around to trying to find this issue on my Nexus 7, and I do see that the Maps app has some "flicker" (i.e., color or brightness changes). If this is what everyone is talking about (sorry, haven't kept up with this particular issue), then let me say that the EXACT same thing happened on my Transformer Prime.
I remain pretty sure that this whole issue is related to the PRISM power-saving tech that's a part of the Tegra 3 platform. I've seen too many wonky issues like this on too many Tegra 3 tablet to think it's not related (that includes the Prime, the Toshiba Excite 10, and the Toshiba Excite 7.7, the latter of which is even an AMOLED screen and so not subject to LCD-type issues).
So I tried to reproduce the flicker on my N7 and was only able to reproduce flicker upon panning in google maps. When I drag the map around and the street names are loading I can sometimes see a minimal flicker (generally when I a lot of loading is occurring). Its pretty subtle and only visible when brightness levels are low.
Don't see any flickering at any brightness level besides that.
To OP, can you see any flickering at all upon panning in your new device? my N7 doesn't flicker like the old one you have, I could probably bare with it.
In a dark room with a Strong wifi full bars and barely and WiFi signal had the same Flickering issue with google maps. It is something else.
So for me it doesn't appear WiFi signal effects it.
Going to be calling Google tomorrow.

The change in colour temp is probably just normal variation. No mobile devices are calibrated (including the iPad3) and they all show a fairly wide variety in their white balance. It is possible, though, that the flicker has some sort of causal relationship with the screen lift.
My search led me here after noticing the flicker issue while browsing the web on my n7 at night.
I just did the map test and it flickers every 5 secs with the WiFi ON. With WiFi OFF there is no flicker. Same with all the apps that use WiFi.
So is a this a HW or SW issue?
There's already a large thread on screen flicker. Not sure why we needed another. Maybe a mod can merge them.

Thanks for the post. I received mine on Tuesday and noticed the screen flicker with the auto brightness. Called last night and they're sending me another. If the RMA flickers, I'll wait until Google's new Motorola division begins creating actual PURE Google products.
Here's my Nexus serial: xx0KBC019770
My first device had the screen separation issue. I have since had this replaced and the new one has the screen flicker.
It is most noticable when the brightness is at its lowest, above 20% it _almost_ disappears. turning wifi off seems to stop the flicker.
In the video did you have the brightness the same on both?
Hi all
I am sad to say but I am at my 3rd S4A now, first one had a faulty button and got replaced on obf, second one had a screen backlight problem where the screen would start dim/flicker as if its not getting enough power, and then lastly the 3rd one had exactly the same issue when adjusted to low brightness levels and its got a pinkish shade on the top part of the screen.
I anyone has any of these issues or knows if and how it can be fixed by firmware perhaps, please comment! I am thinking of just getting a normal S4 although I need a water/dust resistant phone.
Kind regards
Neil

get a 4th and test it right there and then in the shop.
mine does not have your mentioned issues.
I wouldn't use that store any more, sounds unbelievable that 3 stock phones would have such severe problems. Perhaps they are recycling customer returns? If you keep returning them, eventually you'll get the first one back again! Or perhaps you are in a particularly extreme climate of some sort? The screen issues I guess could be related to power, do you have brownouts and powergrid issue where you are? Is the battery in the phone the stock battery?
I don't think changing the phone model would make any difference here, since the S4A doesn't from what has been seen have any higher number of faulty units than the S4 - whatever reason you keep getting these faulty units is likely to just happen again.
On the other hand getting an S4 doesn't mean giving up your water/dust resistant phone - just get an otterbox to go with it!
Thanks for the feedback, I joined xda yesterday and I am loving it already!
@Cederic
Climate conditions are quite normal where I live and its with the stock battery, my feeling too is that it might be power or power management related, not sure if it might be a bug with the vodacom firmware they load and if it can be fixed with software?
The thing is just I dont see going through all of this trouble just to fix something new, and the otterbox defender looks quite niffty for the S4! Choices choices...
I got my Active from AT&T and haven't had any issues with it. I know some people have had issues with the waterproofness, but my mother works as a QA for Samsung and they're now testing that as part of their process so it shouldn't be an issue anymore. At least here in DFW where I live...

Alright, thanks for your opinion... I'll try to go back to older firmwares to test wether it is hardware or software related
If this is a hardware problem, Sony will have some BIGGGGGGG trouble
EDIT : Okay, I have just went back to 524 firmware to test and I can confirm that the problem still persists.
As I wrote in the other thread my phone seems fine, tried 5 times. Someone said that it happened when you got in contact with the aluminium.
So I took the phone out of its case and tried, still fine.

I've noticed a loss of touch across the right edge of the screen, most noticable when playing candy crush and i want to switch on the far right, but in normal use it's absolutely fine, points to software in this case.
If you want to know if there are problems then download a multi touch app and move your finger across every inch of the screen, if you lose contact you'll know theres a problem and you'll have some tangible evidence when you take it back to the shop.
Im so pissed at this crappy thouch screen.. if i type to fast and not hard enough it wont register it.. aspesially annoying with the spacebar.. its like 50/50 chance its gonna work each time.. is this hardware or software?? I'm starting to rather dislike Sony now . I can't believe so many problems can be found on a $5998 HKD, HIGH END smartphone . When I first saw an Xperia Z1, I immediately fell in love with it. I decided to save up all my money to get one, for a few months I only used 1/4 of my lunch money for lunch. And then you know what? I end up with a f*cked up touchscreen, bootloader unlocking problems and a yellow, ugly screen that don't want to see anymore. More then 6 of my friends are gonna buy an Xperia Z1 (cuz they saw mine) But I'm gonna make them change their minds and buy something else.
I thinking they assembling the product with different quality hardware for differen continent. I got mine all original and working fine. I just saying.

I agree, on a device this expensive it should defect free. I have the yellow screen issue but not the touch problem. The yellow screen is definitely annoying because no screen adjuster I have tried solves the problem. And when you compare it side by side with a N5 or HTC One, you really see just how bad the yellow hue makes the screen look. I guess I can live with it now and hope for a solution but it's a shame there has to be threads like these full of the typical QC problems that Android has become infamous for.

I've had mine since November 2014 and I have none of those issues.
Smooth sailing here
I keep it adaptive 66% brightness and its all good no burn-in that I can see I have noticed some specific apps like chrome cause a weird freeze on the right screen half happens maybe once a month with no pattern (a quick screen off/on fixes it could possibly be a custom kernel thing). Only other thing I'd say is the screen has a very warm color palette by default, I use code blue with kcal 237, 235, 255 to make a cooler feel, there's a thread about it somewhere. I've had mine since February.

The Galaxy S6 has lots more software issues then the N6 atm and besides that i have never personaly had this screen issue. The N6 is a great phone especialy now it is beeing discounted here and there (US and UK).
Been rocking N6 for last 1 month and i am loving it. No issues at all. Like u i was also very concerned to put into huge sum of money into N6 purchase after reading soooooo many discouraging videos and reviews and comments.
But i am using it as my daily driver for like 1 month now and i haven't seen any issue related to screen, battery, or even software. 5.1.1 is very stable.
I keep the adaptive brightness on and brightness level at 50% and i get 4 - 4.5 hours SOT with everything on...including google now, location history, location reporting high accuracy.
No screen burn, no battery swelling, no battery life issues, no screen freezes, bt yes i'll admit the screen colour is more on a warmer side.
I got a Nexus 6 from Google Play and a friend got one from Motorola in June 2015. Both have screen issues, one have vertical banding noticeable on gray or dark backgrounds, the other has a yellow tint and very uneven backlighting. I'm not sure if most have these issues and simply aren't bothered or what. Not sure what to do at this point.
Flawless here

There's no backlighting.
What I meant to say is that strips of the screen are brighter or darker than the rest of the screen and it looks blotchy. If I hadn't viewed a solid gray screen, I might not have noticed but this doesn't make me happy, especially knowing that Android M has a dark theme with lots of grays.
I've had my white 64gb from Motorola since March. Had it replaced once already for the screen tearing issue when running a custom dpi. The replacement I got a month ago does the same. Will be calling again soon

Screen tearing or half black?
Issues relating to custom DPI happen on them all.
I received mine on 6/18, no issues other than a pink hue at low brightness (with adaptive brightness turned on) which seems to be software based.

Half black, and half freeze, which I've seen be referred to as screen tearing in just about all the posts I could find on it. Funny thing is on every kernel or ROM thread ice asked about it I've been told it does not happen on all of them. Seems many have had their phones replaced and had no issues in the replacement and that has led to people believing it's a hardware issue. Only other explanation I had seen was something about Franco saying it's a possible display driver issue. Sucks that I can't use Franco kernel at AOL because it becomes horrible

The tearing, which by that I mean freezing definitely seems to be a graphics card issue. The half-black if you change the DPI and rotate clockwise so buttons are on the bottom, afaik happens to them all. I think this is related to the GPU to, though I don';t think that is hardware issue. The tearing issue seems to manifest more when the device is warm/hot

The tearing is a graphics card software or hardware issue? I love this phone, but it's getting very frustrating. Especially since my RMA prices with Motorola turned out to be a series of clusterf*cks.
I'm running Chroma right now and with the included Franco it's unusable in both my phones at a lower dpi. Half screen freezes left and right within seconds of starting up. The reasons I initially believed it was software was that it only seems to happen in certain apps. Specifically ones that required a lot of scrolling, like XDA, Facebook, and chrome. But no one else in the thread seems to have the issue
The half black screen I figured had to be software because the soft buttons are still on the screen.
I just wish there was a solid answer so I could stop guessing

I'm running Chroma right now and with the included Franco it's unusable in both my phones at a lower dpi. Half screen freezes left and right within seconds of starting up. The reasons I initially believed it was software was that it only seems to happen in certain apps. Specifically ones that required a lot of scrolling, like XDA, Facebook, and chrome. But no one else in the thread seems to have the issue
The half black screen I figured had to be software because the soft buttons are still on the screen.
I just wish there was a solid answer so I could stop guessing

I've never had the tearing issue and not everyone has that one. The guys who have had an RMA have generally said that it had stopped the issue happening. Im not sure that has any link to DPI either. My suspician based on not really any evidence at all is that it is hardware related, since some have it and some do not.
The half black is definitely linked to DPI and there is no fix to that that I am aware. I just turn that rotation mode off so I can only go anti-clockwise.

The weird thing with me with the tearing is it only happens in certain situations and has been consistent across both devices I had. Certain kernels I get it, other ones I do not. Franco has been unusable for me on both. It has only happened at lower dpi. Never on stock. Send to be less frequent with interactive governors than ondemand or conservative
