there is no root method for 4.4.2 (covered extensively). your only option (for now) is to sit on your current version or apply a ROM that gives you 4.4.2 functionality (but you're still on 4.4 kernel).

BUMPING for interest

I feel ya man. I'm also sitting on rooted 4.4 wishing I could update to 4.4.2. I like the stock OS on this phone so I don't feel the need to have an unlocked bootloader, but I would love to be able to have the latest OS version. Although I don't think it's a huge update anyways. I've seriously thought about going back to stock and updating to 4.4.2, but I would miss root WAY too much. I love being able to tether without asking for Verizon's permission.

At least you have root. I'm sitting on 4.4.2 waiting for root. So wish I could use xposed...

Mine was ordered a month ago or so. I think it probably is hit or miss whether it has been updated or not. But mine was actually on 4.4 and it updated to 4.4.2 overnight

If you realllllly want root....i'd return the phone and get a dev edition. Otherwise you may be stuck on 4.4.

Well 4.4 would be fine, Im stuck on 4.1.2 as of now on my razrM since they quit updating than.
The first fone i rooted was the razrM and i changed the entitlementcheck to get tethering for my unlimited data.. since than ive accepted two OTA and lost root but the change i made to entitlement check when i had root and write protection disabled still stayed after root was wiped by the OTA. This is puzzling i dont see why guys are loosing entitlement check after losing root with 4.4.2 on moto x

Basically I think moto saw the exploit and simply closed the door on it. ?
Sent from my N5, N7, Moto X, G Tab 3 or S2.....

Yeah I'm dying hoping someone will swoop in and help us get a root exploit going. I'm not quite sure why no one has done it...maybe we need to make a thread like the bootloader unlock one where the dev would make some money if they got root going.

Unlocking the bootloader does solve all this. And the bounty is huge.
Sent from my N5, N7, Moto X, G Tab 3 or S2.....

You are asking about root, but if you want usable root on the X you need two parts 1. Root Exploit, and 2. An Exploit that allows for disabling Write Protection.
When Write Protection is enabled (the phone's default state with locked bootloader, or the state you are in after you take the 4.4.2 OTA), any changes made to /system, or the like, (including, but not limited to, App installs, file modifications, deletions, renames, etc) are not permanent and are lost at power off/on.
Even if you have root, but lost Write Protection, any apps you've installed that need to write to system can't permanently save their changes (you have to re-do every time your phone powers off/on), and any Root type app, or app that gets installed to /system after WP is enabled will be lost at power off/on.
MotoWpNoMo was used on 4.4. and below to Disable Write Protection. Part of the 4.4.2 update patches the exploit that MotoWpNoMo used, so it wont work on 4.4.2.
SlapMyMoto/RockMyMoto/etc, used on 4.4 and lower, involved downgrading the rom to use an exploit in 4.2.2 to gain root. But with 4.4.2 you can't downgrade the rom safely, without risk of bricking your phone, anymore.
JCASE has already posted he has an exploit to use to gain root on 4.4.2, but due to job and family, wont release it until the fall. Who knows what ROM Moto will push out by then, and if they will have patched the exploit already. BUT before you get made at JCASE for waiting so long, that doesn't address a Write Protection dis-abler. I've not seen any talk about work on that for locked bootloaders (when you unlock the bootloader, like on Dev Editions, the write protection is disabled). So JCASE could release his Root exploit, he or someone could develop that process, but it would be kind of useless without the ability to disable write protection.
Trust me, *IF* or when a Root and Write Protection bypass is out, you will see threads on it. Until then, you have to sit tight.
If you are rooted with write protection disabled, you might want to check out the SafeStrap discussions over at Rootzwiki.com. That might at least afford you a way to run 4.4.2
And of course @kj2112 suggestion of getting a Develpper Edition so you can unlock the bootloader and root no matter what rom version, is the best advice. Yes, its more expensive than a subsidized X, signing a contract, but its worth it if you *NEED* or *WANT* root & write protection disabled. (and selling your current X is an option to get cash towards the Dev Edition)

As @The Tallest says, its already being disucssed in that other thread.
Even so, *IF* it safely works, it is only a potential root, but does nothing for write protection.

Too bad. At least it's a possible step in the right direction.

Gaining root on AT&T Moto X with Kitkat leak

I really HATE to have to post this and I will do so quite reluctantly....
I am certainly NOT a noob when it comes to Android, rooting, etc. But, the X is my first Moto android phone. I recently purchased mine via CTO with the AT&T Kitkat leak already installed. The person I bought it from claims there is NO WAY to gain root. He said he installed the leak via stock recovery.
The leak I'm running is 140.44.3.ghost_att.ATT.en.US.
Can anyone who's kind enough and well versed in Moto devices explain to me HOW I can how I can gain root on this leak and/or get Safestrap TWRP installed and if not, will I still be able to receive OTA updates being that the bootloader is locked and the stock recovery is intact? I just don't understand enough about Moto devices. I've searched and searched and can't really find the answers myself otherwise I wouldn't post here on XDA like the moron that I am.
I have a hard time accepting that I can't gain root despite not being able to unlock the bootloader. I realize that certain versions are only compatible with Safestrap (I hope I'm understanding that correctly) but, again I don't understand enough of how Moto's work. I've always had Samsung's or HTC's which are SUPER easy to use via ADB, etc.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You might want to check out whether your phone is bootloader unlockable. I think you should be able to flash 4.4 on it completely soon, I would suggest holding out until then.

To get back to stock all you need to do is download the 4.2.2 stock firmware images and then use rsdlite to install them... Assuming you have adb anyway configured, it only takes a few minutes.
From there you can do a fresh install of the 4.4 ota or take the steps to get 4.4 ota with root.

I wasn't certain because it was flashed over. I'm running on a Verizon ROM and frankly I wouldn't have known it was a Latin America version if I got it like that. So... Oh well. I suppose the probability that it is an AT&T version is much higher. In that case, OP's SOL for a bootloader unlock. Lol

Yea... So I've read. Telnet is SO old school... Was kinda surprised to see that as part of the process. I haven't yet taken the plunge but will probably eventually go for it. Just a little confused since I'm already on stock 4.4 so I'm not sure if I should start at step 1 or what. Oh well... I'll figure it out. Thanks for the suggestions.

well that link is to every guide you would need to get your phone rooted.
but here are a couple question i need you to answer and i can point you in a better direction
1.what Carrier is your device on
2. is your device a Dev Edition or no
answer these questions for me and i will point you to the guide you need to use
here is also some other basic info you may want to know.
if you device is a non Developer edition then you will only be able to root up to 4.4 as of right now the only way to root 4.4.2 is with a device with its bootloader unlocked. the only way to unlock a devices bootloader is for it to be a developer edition or with a carrier that allows the devices bootloader to be unlocked.
hope all this information helps you and i will be waiting for you to answer my questions so i can point you in the right direction.
Its a non developer edition moto maker x VZW , I'm actually had issues with rooting it, but finally got it under 4.2.2 and was also having issues because I was using my work computer, and unfortunately that is the only computer I have access to that works, I saw on the rootzwiki that there is a safestrap version of 4.4.2 and it has the kernel and radio to flash and I was hoping I'd be able to do a jump to that
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
I haven't done the RockMyMoto/MotoWpNoMo processes on the locked bootloader X. There were some threads where some had written up the process with their tips and hints inline.. You might want to try and follow one of them if you've had issues. Just be sure to NOT install the 4.4.2 OTA on your phone in the process!!
If you ultimately need help getting to rooted 4.4 w/Safestrap 4.4.2, you'll probably want to have a thread title that is better suited to it.
For rooting you'll usually get pointed to one of the many threads on rooting via SlapMyMoto, but for safestrap with 4.4.2, I've only seen posts/links back to rootzwiki.com, so you might want to check over there.
@mr4r4n @dray_jr The link is to the guide that shows how to get to 4.2.2 way more than just rooting in that post. Then after you get there you would need follow @KidJoe advice.
as of right now you cant root 4.4.2 on a locked bootloader device. so if you want to keep root you will have to stay at 4.4

Hi, I keep seeing references to being able to get root with write protection enabled. That would at least be better than no root at all for some things, right? And yet I can't find info on how to get to that point. Links, advice, search keywords? I've perused the massive reference guides looking for more concrete info and I may just have missed the obvious. Any help would be much appreciated.
EDIT: Did some more reading, feel like I may have found the disappointing confirmation that root isn't possible on 4.4.2. Clarification: If you managed to root before 4.4.2, you can retain root and upgrade to 4.4.2 with SafeStrap, but you won't be able to disable write protection, so you lose any changes you have made invoking superuser privileges after a soft reset of the device. If you didn't have root before, and you can't unlock the bootloader now, you're completely screwed, rootwise. Correct?

It seems there's a couple ROMs now that may allow you root with write protection disabled on 4.4.2....IF you're still on 4.2.2 or 4.4. They are in development section, and there's a thread about it in general I think.
But if you're already on 4.4.2, no, you're out of luck. For now anyway. You can't downgrade 4.4.2 to do the process.

No bootloader unlock yet?

besides the chinese connection which may or may not be working , I dont need the spam nor do I need links having access to PP accounts . I guess my Moto X will continue to be a paperweight , My Note OG will continue to be my DD , since it has never failed me . Too bad Android is going the way of the proprietory scams (apple, windows ) and I dont blame the Devs like some people in here , , ya gotta figure if Microsoft, Google, Apple or HP ,Oracle see's what these guys are doing and says "I want that kid " , "yore hred kid , but you cant release anymore code to the public, trust me you'll be compensated well" , why wouldnt they take that offer ?

I've seen nothing but happy customers from the Chinese code seller...the phones he could unlock anyway.
So a bit of spam, or an unlocked bootloader..... Seems most go for the unlock.
As said, dev edition is your only other choice. Sell the one you have and you'll be most of the way to the DE cost.
I don't know of anyone on here who has gotten any spam using the PayPal method with the Chinese guy. If you don't have an unlockable version or a dev version, it will likely be the only possibility ever. Motorola have locked these things down tight.

Well, you could start by buying phones that actually suit your needs. Some versions of the X were bootloader-locked. This was known from the outset. So whose fault is it that you own a "paperweight"? It's not the developers, or Google, or Microsoft, or anyone else.
You could have bought a dev edition. You could have bought from a carrier who allowed unlocking. You could have skipped the X altogether... so, why?
I'd like it if Big Red offered more unlockable phones, but I go into any phone purchase with eyes wide open. I decided the Moto X suited my needs even bootloader-locked. So you won't hear any complaints from me: it's my own fault if I don't like it. I don't hear a lot of Ford F350 owners complaining about their gas mileage, and there aren't a lot of Prius drivers that think their car is a paperweight because it can't haul a boat.

I used the Chinese PayPal method and haven't received any spam what so ever, only a single email with my code. Would highly recommend that option to anyone.
wasnt referring to spam from the chinese guy and that would be the option Id take , as for the paperweight , should have stayed with stuff I know like Samsung and HTC anyway , theyve never let me down , there isnt some are some arent!
No disrespect intended.....but you didn't like the X three months ago even, why haven't you just sold it????
Just curious.
I used the chinese MM method. Sent the payment via paypal as instructed and received the code less than 24 hrs later.
Unlocked BL, rooted phone, and installed GravityBox today. Noticed literally no extra lag so far and the increase in functionality, customization, and my satisfaction of the phone has increased exponentially.
If you're worried about spam, can't you just make a temporary email account?

Semi off topic:
If I rooted my phone to 4.4.2. and I have a bootloader locked, doing a factory reset will entitle me to keep my root? Or will I lose it?
And what if I do a factory reset on my rooted moto x on 4.4.2 when my bootloader is unlocked. Will I be able to keep my root when doing factory reset? I am trying to get rid of this "com.motorola.process.system" because I've tried wiping cache and dalvik and safemode and date and time method doesn't work.

See my reply to this same question you asked in another thread. You're out-of-luck.
Please follow my instructions in the other thread. You'll have to re-flash the stock 4.4.2 rom, and you will NOT be getting root back without BL unlock.
Sorry...its posted all over this forum that you cannot take the 4.4.2 OTA - it patches the BL exploits we used.

Alright. Just bought the unlock bootloader service.
If you want a bootloader unlock for AT&T Moto X, you could just get the Rogers Moto X.
They are both XT1058 and the Rogers one is bootloader unlockable on the Motorola website. I unlocked 3 there myself.

Good call, but hopefully that'll be useful for those with that 1058 model. I am on XT1049.

[Q] Easiest way to root Moto X Verizon Build number KX120.16-1.25.2

Just got this phone from my job, had a nexus 5 before. I'm used to wug's nexus root toolkit, something like that would be great. I just need root and a custom recovery. Thanks.
If you have a non-Dev edition, you can't do either. I'm guessing you're on 4.4.2, so you're stuck.
And if you need a toolkit to root a Nexus phone, you should just buy an iPhone.

you are correct.. KX120.16-1.25.2 is definitely 4.4.2 on Verizon.
@patass imnuts is correct. Unless you have the Dev Edition, once 4.4.2 is on your phone, your stuck. (components that get upgraded in 4.4.2 prevent downgrading, and/or cause issues resulting in bricking or future bricking of the phone.) The 4.4.2 upgrade patches the exploits used by the rooting and write protection disable processes.
There is the Chinese Website/Middle man option, but it voids your warranty.
Tell your job to get you a developer edition. Tell them that it's safer and you want to ensure their data is protected. Then unlock and root that bad boy...
It's what I'd do.

So your job lets you run with a rooted phone?
Most companies I've supported BLOCK rooted devices.

Verizon (non-Dev Edition), ATT and Republic Wireless can not unlock their bootloader. It has been this way since the 2013 X went on sale.
Its likely due to contracts between Moto and those carriers.
It is possible!!
I just did it earlier today, google "sunshine moto x" I had trouble initially but went on the site talked to the dec and he fixed the app for me, I am now unlocked deciding which 5.0 rom I want to go with. (sucks no moto apps until they relase the official )

I tried sunshine 3.0.3 on a VZW 4.4.4 non-dev phone and it couldn't achieve temp root. You are saying that it worked for you on a VZW locked non-dev 4.4.4 phone?
Edited: Just tried it on 3.0.4 as well. No joy.

I think it depends on how you got to 4.4.4. If you took the official OTA, like I did, you're out of luck.

Yeah, that is what I suspect. I am pretty sure if JCase had added support for the moto x in sunshine, he would've announced it by now. Lots of money to be had.

Sunshine relies on your phone being rooted, or the tool being able to obtain temp root.
4.4.4 on the 2013 Verizon Moto X, or most/all 2013 Moto X on locked bootloader, hasn't been rooted, and the tool can't temp root the phone.
So if you have 4.4.4 on the 2013 Moto X, do not expect Sunshine to work.
If you have never updated the 2013 Moto X to 4.4.4, then Sunshine will likely work just fine.

I took the soak test leak and pushed it to my phone and I can't unlock my boot loader either I don't think it has anything to do with that :/

Did you update everything or did you individually update components? I think it came down to whether or not people updated the bootloader when they updated to 4.4.4. There was a way to update without updating the bootloader and I think it's those phones that sunshine works for. I'm far from an expert though; I could definitely be wrong.

But gchase23 did NOT say what rom was on his phone BEFORE using Sunshine.. only that he was now unlocked and trying to decide on which 5.0 rom to run.

People were being "cute" and manual flashing SBF's but skipping GPT.BIN and Motoboot.img (two parts that can't be downgraded).
However, as I understand it, this doesn't change the fact that 4.4.4 can't be rooted or temp rooted by Sunshine, which prevents it from working. It does mean that if done this way, they could likely downgrade to their previous SBF which matches the GPT.Bin/Motoboot (probably 4.4.2), and still use sunshine.

Dude, did you read what I quoted? He said sunshine unlocked his moto x. The OP specifies 4.4.4 and he said "I just did it", implying he was on 444.
I think you are skipping over a bit and replying only to parts of what I asked. I am well aware that sunshine won't work on 444. He stated he unlocked his with sunshine... Using only the words " I did it". I asked if he was on 444.

Its implied, but I've been on these boards enough to question when its not explicitly stated.
I was hoping he'd come back and provide confirmation that he was on 4.4.4, and what bootloader was on his phone

And that is exactly what I was getting at.
When asked about the future of sunshine for the 2013 moto x, JCase said "not anytime soon."

Ugh... Take a look at this post by gchase23 from a few nights ago -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...6gb-bootloader-unlocked-t3057964/post59532395
Notice he says "XT1060 4.4.3 VZW - Rooted" Um, XT1060 never had 4.4.3, only 4.4.2 and 4.4.4. So I'm not sure we'll get a straight answer, because I replied asking for clarification, and didn't get a response.

Oh wow. Yeah, something is a bit off there.
JCase said something a while ago about a bunch of exploits he would be releasing. I was/am really hoping there would be something that we could use to gain root on the 2013 Moto X, but with his last comment on twitter, I'm not so sure that is going to happen.
If I were in any other situation, I would be looking for a new phone, but two things are preventing it. First, I love the Moto X and haven't found another phone I like better. Second, MY moto x is already unlocked (I held on to 4.4 until Sunshine came out). Its my wifes and my fathers that are not. Somehow they ended up on 4.4.4 without knowing it. They claim it just happened while they were sleeping. I more quickly suspect they tapped on it thinking it was an app update from the app store. But in any event, their phones are still locked.
