Just picked up a secondhand Z1 but not sure if I'm happy with camera Quality even when I take a pic using iso 50 in manual mode.
I've heard the camera even beats the S5 and the 5s etc but this is a pic I took just now indoors.
Why does detail seem to be so smudged?

Well to be honest..all companies lie about the capabilites of their cameras in phones..the recent s5 ad..has the text..simulated images..
But with that being said.. The camera is actually okay and will get better in the future.. With better algorithms and less compression. Try different settings until then

True but this camera has a 1/2,3" sensor, ok not the biggest but very big for a phone and a lot of compact cameras have this size sensor so it should perform as good as a compact camera not a DSLR obviously.
I doubt Sony will make the algorithms/compression much better on this phone now that the Z2 is out?

Sorry for my previous post, checked again and there is a build ending 757 available, that wasn't showing yesterday when I checked? weird.
Just taken the same pic on 757, I can't notice any difference?

that's because there's 2 sources of light, the light of your TV and the light of your room, try a better target and compare
try wiping the lens everytime before taking photo.
But I think it is no problem at your result. it is normal when taking low light photo. sometime Z1 has focus problem (even it shows that it in focus, the image can still be smudged).
maybe you can try auto mode, it sometime give you better result.

Perhaps the algorithm from z2 will be usable on our Z1 as they use the same sensor and is the same hardware more or less

I also really like ProCapture. It offers more options for dealing with different lighting conditions and the pictures just look better. I prefer it to other camera apps as it does not overwhelm you with editing options.

Agreed. The only issue I notice is that sometimes it has a focusing issue. But that can be resolved by just focusing a few more times.

I've noticed that too. However it is still faster than the stock camera, and doesn't seem to FC if you take multiple pictures in quick succession.

Very likely due to the fact they removed some of the aggressiveness from the camera noise reduction

Exactly! Worsened the quality of the photos!
I get better photo quality in night shots using superior auto..certainly I get very low noise after the update..

So... complaining about overly aggressive post-processing only brought worse photos
Actually, Sony reduced the shutter speed to increase the light that gets in the camera.
In. 253 fw taking pics is slower than before.

It was on superior auto...no manual settings at all..even I was amazed with quality with sup auto
Sent from my C6602 using xda app-developers app
In low light if there is no noise that means there is overly used denoise filters! Sony got that and fixed it.
There will be noise in low light it is the nature of this technology not something you can escape. To clear noise you depend on denoise filters which processes image. Sony's auto mode was a mess before now it is back to normal.

This looks just awesome. People are full of crap, .253 fw update did a great job.
Low lights = high ISO = More noise.
If we lower the shutter speed than ISO can be lower that means less noise.
But lowering the shutter speed result in blurry photos, and In this case people will start to cry again and will start talking about the camera is not doing a sharp pics.
Conclusion use the Normal Mode and tweak the settings for your taste, they are here for a reason

sorry guys you are right. today i take some photo in open space with solar light and the pictures are awesome. too much details and more quality, and i take a good photo in low light with scene selection, with night mode or fireworks mode
taken with 253. sorry but the forum reduces the size and the quality. what do you think about?

So I've been searching for an advanced cameras app where you can play around. So far I've come across camera v5 not sure if the name's right... The Beauty of it is that you can adjust the shutter speed to capture light trails like in a dslr... What I'm looking for is something that lets me manually adjust the focus.. The Optimus black on ginger bread had the option and it was great, any one know of such an app?

Increasing the shutter speed will result in less light coming inside the camera so the pic will look dark or even black.
Long time i didn't tried CM roms so i don't know what settings it has.
Could you attach some settings screenshots.

The app is called camera fv 5. It's a paid app on the platform store.. Also increasing the shutter speed won't capture more light.. You need to set a long shutter delay to capture light trails...
