I purchased SuperGNES with my promotional $25 Google Play credit balance. Come to find out, the app crashes when tapping on any of the menu items. I'm sure the app developer will fix it, but I decided I wanted to refund and purchase at a later date once I know it works for the N7. Once I refunded (it was within the 15 minute window), I expected the amount to be credited back to the Google Play balance (based on the terms: "7. In the event you receive a refund of a purchase made with your promotional balance, any refunded amount will be credited back to your promotional balance for future use under these same terms."). That didn't happen. I have sent a report to Google Play for them to fix it, but I just wanted to warn people to be a bit careful with their promotional credit. It is possible that it may take a little time to process, so I'll update this on how it goes.
PS: I searched the N7 forums for any topic on this and couldn't find it. My apologies in advance if one exists.
*UPDATE* - The refund did finally go through, though it took a lot longer than I would've expected. It also did reapply to the Google Play credit balance. All is well
Thanks for the heads up mate!

Awesome, thanks for the info. I'll check back tomorrow and will definitely update this. I figured it would've taken a lot less time since it's just a simple transaction. I usually purchase with a credit card so I normally don't ever think about these things

Scared me when I tried refunding an app that kept crashing and my balance wasn't updating. I guess I just have to wait for it to update.
I purchased gold for Dead Trigger with the $25 credit, but it was never put into the game asked for a refund haven't heard back from the creator or been given a refund.

I'm in the same boat as you. Bought gold in game two days ago and it still hasn't shown up. E-mail dev twice now with no response.
To make it worse, I just applied the update, and now it crashes immediately after clicking the icon on my N7.
I got a refund within an hour of asking for one. Just went back on to my credit.

So long story short, I ordered a Nexus from GPuk but was delayed far too long for me as I was going to be out of the country when it was likely to be delivered so purchased mine from pc world UK tried to cancel the gp one no luck so allowed it to eventually be delivered so I could refuse delivery to get the refund from Google. This was recommended to me by a gp rep, as TNT require a signature I was advised to call them to tell them the that I wanted to refuse delivery. I did this as soon as I got my tracking number but while out of the country checked the tracking from TNT only to discover it had been delivered and signed for by an unknown person to an unknown location. Furious was not the word.
So i called TNT eventually they understood and apologised and accepted that I wanted to refuse delivery but also accepted they didn't give me the opportunity to and could not tell me where it had been delivered but would speak to the local depot and driver and get back to me. Que 5 or so calls only for the customer support team to tell me they still don't know where it has been delivered to but assured me that they will pick it up and return to sender with no more interaction needed from me. That was last Wednesday and have nothing more, in the meantime I have tried to contact gpuk to explain they have charged me for something I don't have. I I have tried explaining that I don't have it and what TNT have done but no matter what I try I am getting no return from Google to my many emails on this. What concerns me is that TNT have delivered it to someone else at a different address than the one supplied and can only assume that it looks delivered successfully to Google.
Where do I stand? I currently I am £208.99 out of pocket for a nexus I didn't want, and that's apparently been delivered but not to me....

First things first, don't just email Google, call them. They're much better if you speak to them directly (so I've heard).
Second, if you purchased this on a credit card, most credit cards have methods of recourse for situations like these, so I'd speak to your bank.
Third, call TNT and ask for verification from them that you could present Google with in order to help facilitate a refund process.

Might be worth contacting your bank and saying you have paid for something but not received it and thus want to claim the money back

Thanks all managed to get through to Google tonight on the phone, and seemed genuinely sympathetic to me and have opened a support ticket and sent it to a specialist who will work directly with Tnt....let's see how we go

when you speak to google again, ask them to disable the one that was supposed to have been sent to you and then to send you a new one. they will then recover the cost from courier.

I had my family buy a bunch of google play gift cards for my son for Christmas.
We've been purchasing apps without a problem until today. I went to purchase Greedy Spiders for $0.99 and I could not use the Google Play gift cards. The card was greyed out with a message right below the cards stating "This payment method has been declined.", but noting a balance of $12.05.
I called Google Play support and had to go through 3 calls and 6 support reps before one finally addressed the problem. The developer of the app is not allowing payment using Google Play gift cards. The developer of the app only accepts payment by credit card. This seems crazy to me. It's kinda like going to BestBuy and being unable to use BestBuy gift cards to buy a Sony TV because Sony only accepts credit card payment.
I'm not sure how many other developers are not accepting Google Play as a payment method, but I wanted to share the story.

yep. Aren't those gift cards supposed to help protect you from compromising your personal information online? ID theft is a pretty huge problem nowdays. I would be wary of doing business with that developer....
While I'm certain this vendor is the exception to the majority as I've had an Android phone for years and never experienced this, there will always be some vendors unless Google changes their policies to prevent developers from doing this. IMHO, I blame Google more than anyone. Google should not be providing developers the option to exclude Google Play gift cards when developers sell their products through the Google Play store.
I just came across this issue too but it seems to be for EVERY app or movie i have tried to download. I have a google play balance of $85 that seems to be utterly useless now! I need to do more research into this because this is just not acceptable and i feel extremely cheated. This is the first thread i came across so thought i would share my experience. If anyone has any input or an alternate reason as to why i can no longet use my play credit to make purchases i would be very interested to know.
Well with respect, Google Play is more like Amazon or EBay as such they allow anyone to write an app and publish it. And since Google is a world wide service, some countries may not or be able to accept that gift card service.
It happens but it is rare. We dealt with this with the initial $25 Play Store credit we got with our Nexus 7s. A very few developers wouldn't/couldn't accept the Gift Cards...
Or maybe it is a time factor. Maybe the listings have to be updated to accept gift cards?
I don't see a huge issue with this. I personally like the idea that devs can choose their method of choice.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
My problem with that is that i cant find a single app, movie, or song i can download with my play store balance. If there is NO devs that are going to accept gift cards as payment then Google needs to reimburse me for the money I already put out on their gift cards to download from their store which now seems to be completely void. If i knew i was going to be put in this position when i spent $150 on gift cards i would have never bought them. They claim on the card they are good for all purchases from the store apart from tangible products and when outside the US. I will be calling them tomorrow during business hours to bring this issue up.

I agree. When I got my N7, I had no problem using my $25. Seems fishy to me. It shouldn't matter if the money came from a gift card, green is green.
And I was just thinking about getting a gift card for the Play Store. After reading this though, maybe I should try something different.
Well now.. that is pretty retarded.
If your goal in writing an app is to harvest credit card information, it makes perfect sense.

Hi, I know it's a bit late but I have just found a SOLUTION to this problem. You can solve this by creating another Gmail account and using the same payment method as this problem is not related to the the payment method but the account as I have found. Go into Settings>Accounts>Add Account>Google>New. Then create a new Google account which will work alongside your present Google account and NOT replace it. Go to the Play store and swipe right across the screen and you will see a drop down menu from your present Google account going into the Google account you just made. Use this new account to purchase the application. The application will be downloaded to your phone hopefully without your "payment method being declined" .
First I've heard of sellers even getting that opton. It's not on my developer console. How would the developer know anyway? The income isn't broken down by method of payment. nothing related on the merchant account either.
I suspect a glitch rather than anything deliberate.

App writers never see credit card information. Only the payment processor (in this case google) does.
I bought my Nexus 7 last year when I lived in the US. I also redeemed the $25 promotional Google Play Balance and I used it but for $0.87.
Now I'm stuck in a very strange situation. The balance should have expired on September 30th 2013, but I still can see it on my Google Wallet.
Unfortunately that's quite an issue for be because in the meanwhile I relocated to Italy and last week I opened a Google Play Developer account.
I'd like to make my account a merchant account but I can't since until I have Google Play Balance I cannot "move" the account from my old american address to my new italian address.
Did Google already remove your expired Google Play Balance?
This actually sounds like something customer support can fix for you. Give them a call.

Google has been helpful support wise in the past for me. Just ask them to remove your balance. Trying a new rep a few times might help, sometimes there is someone go goes above and beyond what they are asked for.
I still have like a $0.03 balance and I bought on launch day.
I hurried to order my 5x in order to get the $50 Google promotional credit, thinking I could use the credit balance to purchase from the Google store the USB-C cables I knew I would need.
Today, I went to order my cables, and the store wouldn't let me check out, saying "invalid payment method."
I went back to the offer, and in the fine print on the terms it says: "Items ineligible for purchase using promotional balance include certain subscriptions (see the Help Center for more information), as well as items in the Google Store." (emphasis added). You can only use the credit to buy intangibles, not actual things.
I feel ripped off, like it was a cheap bait and switch. Was I unreasonable to think I could use a Google credit to buy things at the Google store? You can use the Google credit from their marketing questions (Google opinion rewards) at the store. I don't need any games or movies, but I do need new cables.
That's my rant.
This has always been the case.
pretty sure it is google PLAY credit, not google STORE credit. so no, you won't able to spend play credit at the store.
I discovered that as well. Google Play credit, regardless of whether it was from this promo or the Opinion Rewards, cannot be used at the store. I called customer support to see if it could be applied to the type C wall charger they sell, and they wouldn't budge. Oh well.
I'm not happy that I can't use the balance on a charger, but I'm also not surprised. Physical equipment costs them a lot more than apps.
With the right cables, you can get away with using an older charger and a minimal difference in charge time. Most of those cables cost way less than google's quick chargers on the store.

You'll get an email to redeem the offer from the Googs. If you don't (say within a week or 2) I'd contact customer support
If you are a Play Music subscriber you can use it to pay that subscription, I was able to switch my recurring payment method to my Play credit balance.

I'm pretty sure you had to order by the 25th to get the play store credit.
To the OP, how can you feel ripped off for something you got for free? Entitled much? It's said for play store use only since the beginning, it's your own fault for not reading. Everything has fine print these days.
Yeah it definitely was the 25th. Any free money is good money. Paid for Nova Launcher prime for me!
Picked up Ellie Goulding album with some of my credit. I also had a promo for half off an album so total cost was less than $9 Play credit

I ordered mine on the 18th of October and had to call Google about the credit. It turned out there was an email with a redeem code. I bought nova prime as well! Love it.
And yes it's just Google play apps, BUT, if you're into dating apps, you can use the money towards ok cupid I know for sure but maybe some others as well. That's a plus as I'm trying to buy apps, but now I can't find any worth buying except nova launcher prime of course!
