Just wondering if anyone can share there experiences with the exchange program through att..like what HAVE you gotten away with and what HAVENT you gotten away with and got slapped with the $500 charge lol
I followed the the warranty return thing on this forum, and I got no problem. I had seriously scratched the screen of the phone. I told the manager before sending it to quote she said its "normal wear and tear." But my speaker of the phone was messed up. On that same phone the void button and some ddamage as I was playing with it, I didn't what it was, until I found out later that its to open up the phone.
So, I got away with two major linear scratches on the screen which made writing with the stylus impossible. And I had damaged the button. But I told the manager of this before I sent it in. Or the High_end PDA department.

what did they find wrong with the phone???
i just sent one they sent me, the first time, i put it into the boot loader and noticed that the SPL was HardSPL, it scared me a little and well the screen cracked while i was looking at it an hour later, the phone rang so i looked and the caller ID and suddenly there was a broken screen on my tilt. not sure if they are gonna say anything about hard SPL but it came that way.
(part of me hopes i was holding someones old phone from this site)
oh yeah and this probably shoudn't be in ROM developement, ask a mod to move it to general
oh im just wondering..i was reading a post about putting the old att spl back on for an exchange and someone replied about how theyve returned 6 tilts with major problems all of which should fall outisde of warranty so i just thought id ask as i have a slight problem myself but its not keeping my kaiser from working and i opened a ticket with HTC directly as they dont screw you if you fall outside of warranty...my usb charger was getting a full contact and i had to bend it up and down to get it to stay charging (shoulda just sent it in then lol) and finally the plastic seperator of the pins broke out and then i bent in a pin a few times and that broke off..so i opened it up and soldered it back in and it eventially popped off again so i was thinking i could just squeeze the plastic piece that broke off back in as it wont come out unless you use needle nose pliers and sliding that pin back in..
I did a warranty return not to long ago. Phone was stuck with the radio from hell 1.65.17.10 and didn't have the friendly FrankKaiser that Jockyw2001 developed. Never had an issue with AT&T saying that I had altered the phone in any way. I flashed back to the original shipped ROM. Change the SPL to 1.56 the original one that it came with. I then re-flashed the original shipped ROM. When the ROM flash completed at 50% I unplugged the phone. This way on the phone will only go to the bootloader.
I actually just did a warranty return again today. Had some scratches on the screen that were really bugging me. There weren't big but definitely a nuisance for me. Told them the phone was stuck on the bootloader, or as I put it in "in this three color screen with Red, green, white." They issued a warranty replacement right away.

yeah cause we don't know about the magic we can do with the "pretty rainbow screen" come on ATW you let a few little scratches bug you. i'm still waiting for them to send me one that works, i've sent back three and i still have the original that i bought. two broken usb ports and a broken screen good job at&t for being incompetent
Has anybody done a warranty replacement and convinced them to send a new one and not a refurbed?

actually yes, well they say they will be sending it when the get the phones i just sent back. i talked to Christina and she told me that the phone they will send me next will be the tilt as it comes out of the box, including the software cd, usb cable, stylus, battery, and back cover. i will confirm when i recieve it but they tell me it will be brand new
Well, after I figured out my ROM issues. My phone had some problems with continuously soft resetting. I suspect a bad memory block. I made it clear through out my conversation with the rep that I took really good care of my phone and that I don't know how people can throw their 400 dollar phones around like they are nothing. I also made a point to say my battery seemed to be going bad and that I had done some research about Li-Po batteries going bad and that this seemed to be a classic case. I asked if there was anyway she could send a battery with the phone. (Just so you know, when you call warranty replacement, it seems to me they have two options, send a refurb, or send a full kit) So, she said she could send me a full kit and it is otw now. That is a good thing because my phone wont boot now. I think whether you get caught with a bootloader that is different than OEM kinda depends on who receives the phone on the other end. I'm sure they are SUPPOSED to check that, but I'm sure they can get away with not checking it, and I'm sure there is no incentive for checking it.

They could have said F.U., you broke it we are not resposible.
My phone got stuck in bootloader while doing a rom update.Called AT$T, they sent me through three techs, my answer to all there suggestions were " did it ", " did it ".
Three days later, they sent me a refurb ( in perfect condition ), in the box was the phone, a return mailing label/postage, even a new piece of tape to seal the box. Put the phone in,sealed the box, put on the label, dropped it in the mail box. End of story. The new/refurb has worked great ever since.
Could not have been easier or more pleasant.
So far it has been very positive even when my phone was technically out of warranty they replaced my TILT (not a cheap phone)
I have done 4 returns via mail and 1 by going to a local AT&T Warranty exchange center. NO PROBLEMS, I did revert back to original ROM but I am sure they didn't check. store replacement was in and out in 25 minutes. ( 10 minutes after my phone was looked at they just gave me a new one ).
AT&T You do have great warranty service I will give you that.
so all sounds good i should just stick my device in bootloader mode and send it back?
i can only revert back the rom as i cant sspl it so it shows hardspl AND security unlocked at the top..think thatl make a difference?
My miniUSB port was broke, wouldn't charge or sync most of the time. I called AT&T told them what was wrong and they said they'd send me a replacement. Once the replacement got here, I reverted my phone back to at&t ship specs, sent it back to them and all went well.
My girlfriend and I both had the Hermes, unlocked w/ cooked rom. They physically broke to a point it was hard to revert them back, but eventually was able to, we got 2 brand new Kaisers for $50 a piece. I'd love to know if I can 'loose' this phone and get a new kaiser for another $50 then sell the one i've been using for a couple of months for 2 or 3 hundred. If anyone has done this or knows how let me know!
I recently had to send in my Tilt and recieved a refub in the mail and everything went very smooth. Customer service was good and fast.
just returned 2 8525's and they sent me a tilt, first 8525 white screen problem, second one wont continue installing rom above 12%. awesome hardware warranty service.
wow they upgraded you to a tilt, thats amazing
warranty
as long as the phone isnt in more than one piece and the liquid indicator under the battery is white there should be no problem. Keep this in mind also. It all really depends on who receives it when you send it in. Everyone views physical damage, wear and tear, etc in their own terms even though there is a standard measure for it. Some let things go and others will say that a wear and tear scratch is damage. Generally you can get away with a bit as long as the phone doesnt look like a dog to it. No broken screens. No screens with pressure cracks (internal cracks). The screen is usually the biggie.
when i first got my kaiser i joined this site.. days later i BRICKED my phone, i had all types of apps and crap on my ppc. SO i went over to my original at&t shop and the dude called my bluff of "i dunno why, its not working". So i took my device and the next day went to another at&t shop with my brother. I walked in flirted my ass off with the ugliest sales rep i found.. and man this chick was beastly, and was able to swap out my device and get a new 512mb mem. card .. with no problem. i didnt even have a reciept, i just talked my way thru and SHAZAM!
I bought a Tilt refurb through AT&T and just after the 90 day AT&T warranty, the keyboard began having issues with it where some keys required harder or repeated presses to register. There was no water damage and I never dropped it so who knows why it happened. It really only happened with 2 or 3 keys.
I took it to a repair store locally but they wanted like $120 to "replace" the keyboard and assembly, which made little sense to me since I had only paid $149 for the phone.
So I contacted HTC and in case anyone else is in this boat, just because the AT&T warranty is expired does not mean the HTC warranty has expired.
HTC's warranty is 15 months and they can calculate it from the serial number. They told me I was still within that 15 month period so I am ASSUMING that they will repair it for free.
please say you reverted your rom back to the shipped version before sending it in.
this is currently happening to my "a" key...I hope it doesnt get worse
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just kidding. Yeah, I did.
this happened to me a few weeks ago. sent it to att. first refurb i got back had a broken screen..second was fine just the slider was misaligned. how can you tell if there is still an HTC warranty on the phone?
Call (888) 354-2375 and read them your serial number.
htc charges you a $30 triage fee upon inspecting the device and then they ill notify you of whats wrong and if its covered..
I was told the triage fee is waived if the problem is covered.
I am having the same issue with my "s" button. i have to press it twice as hard to get it to register half the time and this sucks when you have to use your phone for work emails and such.....
im going to call that number here shortly to see if my phone is coverd still....
thanks for the thread....
I'll post back news when I hear back from them and when I get the phone back.

Yikes i just called and the guy on the phone told me "it would be about a houndred and forty-five dollars to fix that"
I asked about the 15month thing and he said "that only covers factory defect, a failing keyboard would deffinately not be covered"
I said "yeah ok thanks buddy" (hung up)
wowsers.......
the phone to me is not woth 145.00 to me now when the Raphael/Fuse and HD are so close. ah hell i could probably just buy a refurb from at&t for that much.
i hope you have better results than i did just now.
i will be monitoring this thread in hopes that it works out for you.
30.00 50.00 not so bad 145.00 nah im cool.
fingers crossed for you.
it wouldn't surprise me, but if a failing keyboard isn't considered a factory issue than nothing is.
A warranty should cover anything short of physical damage.
it really sucks that they told you this isnt factory issue.
I bought my device NEW from ATT and I have the same problem.
I was hoping this was ROM issue... but I now see it's not... too bad
just keep bothering them...make them be in your shoes..words can work magic but persistance can get you what you want dont give up just keep bugging them and getting higher personnel
This started happening about a few months after I bought the phone. My V is terrible my A is bad and my S is also bad. I thought it was a ROM issue as well. but now I have to press V extremely hard for it to register. I bought my phone sometime in December of 07 or Jan 08. Can't remember exactly when.
hi everyone, I got my tytn 2 from orange last october and I have the problem with several letters as well. I called up the HTC repair centre and told them it was really annoyed me cos i kept on missing letters in the txt. I sent back my device and fix it under warranty without charging me anything. Fixed in 5 days with UPS delivery. Very good service. Just call them up and try
good luck
I did the same thing. My TyTN II was still under the 15 month warranty thru HTC. They turned it around within about 2 days and had it back to me. They replaced the keyboard and the flex circuit.
They were supposed to call me when they had it to discuss what the issues were, but I never got the call. I wanted them to fix the misalignment issue between my top and bottom half (off by about a 1/16"), but they never did that. When I inquired after I got my phone back, they told me that "physical issues with the phone are not covered under warranty". Only software and internal board related issues.
They still have my phone...haven't heard whether its covered or not...or how much they will charge.
If these guys are anything, they are slow.
Hi Guys
Just wanted to post my frustration regarding their service center. Its already been a week and the "good" folks there can't get their act together.
Dropped off my phone 7 days ago(Monday) at HTC as it had the much reported faulty power button. As my phone had a few scratches on it, I also asked for a quotation to have the casing replaced.
This is where it gets crazy..
I received an email from HTC 3 days later(wednesday) telling me my phone has been assessed and the quotion is as follows. Except there was no price listed on the email.
As I was out of the country I did not call up the service center for clarification.
Received an identical email from HTC the following day(Thursday) with no price on it as well. I only got back late Thursday night and hence called HTC first thing Friday morning for clarification.
Turns out, HTC records show that I had rejected their quotation when i hadn't even spoken to them!
Anyway, as I had an unlocked boot loader, I was aware that I would be hit with repair fees. However, HTC wanted to change my mainboard because I have a Third Party ROM which I quote, "is illegal!" The thing is, My phone has been rolled back to stock. Complete stock! Which means even the recovery is stock! I kept insisting that my phone is not running on any 3rd party ROM but they sent me a picture of the unlocked padlock saying that that shows I have a "3rd Party ROM installed and it is illegal".
I had an important meeting to attend to so I had run out. The next day(sat) I called HTC to further understand why they need to replace my motherboard and that i have no third party ROM. I also only require them to fix my power button. Turns out the service support guy said I had already accepted the charges to repair yesterday!!!
I told him I have not and would like to speak to the engineer who inspected my phone for clarification. He told me that the earliest I could speak to him is on Monday.
I have called HTC twice so far today(Monday) to have hem transfer me over to that enginnerbut despite them saying they will arrange for him to call me, I have yet to receive his call.
My take is, aside from the complete misunderstanding of an unlocked boot-loader and 3rd party ROM, does anyone know if they need to replace the motherboard just to fix the power button? (which happens to be a known problem with the earlier batches of N1)
I am utterly frustrated with HTC's support for this phone. It's enough for me to swear of HTC entirely and look at Motorola now..
That is just crazy. I have heard many good things about HTC service lately. And its not like the failing power button isn't a known common issue. What the hell HTC.
That's messed up. Don't let up. Keep at it
I have half a mind to make the trip down to the service center to get to the bottom of this. I have a strong suspicion the engineer is not going to return my call and they are simply shafting the Nexus One users..

oh that's probably exactly the problem. how sucky...
Hey guys
Thanks for replying. Yes the call center is indeed sucky. Despite calling a local number, I get a distinct impression that I am speaking to helpdesk agents in China. (gotta love outsourcing) Anyway, fed-up with them for giving me the run around, I made the trip down to the service Center. (I saw lots of ppl holding on to desire phones waiting for their turn to have their device serviced).
Finally got to speak to the service personnel there and explained to her the entire situation.
The conversation went something like this
HTC Rep: Our records show you have a third party ROM. That will constitute a motherboard replacement.
I patently explained to her that I have an unlocked boot loader which means all i did was void the warranty. It does not require a motherboard replacement.
Her next response was, "the power button is connected to the motherboard which would require the mother board to be replaced".
I told her I was skeptical about that as there is a widespread belief on the internet that HTC's SOP is to replace the motherboard of any Nexus one that has an unlocked boot loader. Secondly, this is a known defect of the early batches of Nexus ones and I do not appreciate how my case was being handled.
She said she will have an engineer come out an explain it to me.
So i waited, while she went into the backroom. After several minutes, she emerged unaccompanied and told me that they had waved the charges to repair my power button!
Secondly, she gave me the quotation to replace the scratched casing and asked if I agreed to it. Of which i readily agreed! (I had asked for that in the first place)
Lesson learned is to keep pressing HTC to see the engineer who assessed the phone. I have a feeling the engineers are not interested in facing the customer and will fix the power button, should it come to that
The Singapore HTC Service Center always messes things up. I hated my experiences there.
When I came into the service center at Keppel Towers there was no proper signage or instructions on how to get a queue number and I had to figure it out after 5 minutes of roaming around in the room during my first time there.
I specifically told the CSO that I wanted the courier guy to call me before delivering the items and he never did. Twice he appeared at my office without calling me.
Btw, how much were you quoted for the casing change?
Cost me SGD $224.70 (inclusive of GST) It's definitely steep. But if you went the DIY route (voiding the warranty and possibly breaking the phone) a replacement casing will set you back USD$90.
You can buy it here.

Wow, I'm in the US and had a great experience. My power button went out so I called them on a Saturday and talked to a very nice lady who simply asked if I wanted it repaired of replaced. I opted for repair.
I sent it via Fed-Ex Monday afternoon and got it back Thursday morning. It was rooted and running the leaked Froyo but came back locked on stock 2.1 with a different IMEI number. I assumed they just switched phones instead of repairing it, but now I'm not so sure, maybe the motherboard thing is true or maybe they do replace them if they're rooted. Dunno why, I had it rooted and running Cyan an hour after getting it back, but I would be interested in knowing if I have the same phone with a different motherboard or a different phone.
But they didn't give me any hassles with the rooting or custom rom. I got an email saying it had arrived and they were assessing it's condition, and one the next day saying it was ready and would be delivered the next day, and that was the end of our interaction.
Guess the N1 users in Singapore arn't so fortunate. Anyway, I should get my phone by tomorrow...After which i'll try the alternate root approach (where I dont have to unlock the bootloader) cos I probably wont be so lucky the next time around
Mine is sent in for dust under the screen for the 2nd time already. I called the other day to check the status since it's been over 14 days and I have not received it back.
I was told that every time your phone is sent in for repair that they change the imei number, and in order to do that they have to swap out the motherboard. Now this may not be correct but this is what I was told.
Also I was informed that they are in the process of relocating their repair facility to another location and my phone will be another week or so. I am now going on 3 weeks without it.
When i sent it in the first time for dust the screen was not loose, when I got it back and pulled it out of the box it was loose.
I know that this is not the power button issue but I was just throwing in my experience and what I was told about the imei/motherboard deal.
Guys
Just got my phone back! Power button is working now but guess what...My bootloader is stillUNLOCKED. They did not replace the motherboard. My phone was still on the FRF83 ROM and the moment I powered it up, i got the OTA update for FRF91.
After all that drama where HTC tried to shove down my throat that I needed to change my motherboard, they did not need to do it.
I am happy I finally got my phone back but I am really, really furious about this whole thing cos that just proved that they were trying to rip me off..
HTC has lost one customer.
I have a totally different experience
I got the button broken, expected to be charged and sent to the service center.
Ended up not charging me, and they replaced the motherboard, the button, and the track ball.
Everything done without charge, *OUT OF WARRANTY*
Repaired mine myself. Got the part through ebay for $24.00. Google search shows step by step. Not a big deal. Works like new.
Sent from my Nexus One using xda premium
Hi guys,
So finally, the power button issue has got too bad and my N1 is going back for repair with HTC UK. The courier is picking it up tomorrow AM. Anyone know how long I'll have to wait before I get it back?
I'll be playing with my wifes N1 while its away, but its just not the same.
Thanks,
Scarygore.
Hi,
Mine was confirmed received by HTC UK on Wednesday 25th last week. Its still with them, and all the online repair status says is:
"We have completed our diagnostic tests and have a quotation ready for your review."
And then when clicking on this:
"There are no active quotations for this ticket. If you have any questions please contact the customer support."
I phoned customer support on Friday but they were not able to tell me anything at all...
I'm hoping for an update tomorrow.
The repair is for the powerbutton also.
When I sent mine in, it was collected on a Monday and back in my hand on the Friday. Can't fault them.
Was it yours or a replacemet though, cause thats different
It was my phone, repaired.
Thanks for your replies.
The UPS guy picked it up an hour ago.
I going to miss it!
Scarygore,
Any news on your repair? HTC still has mine :-/
Cheers
No news so far, the online tracker says they have recived it but thats all. Anyone know how to get Froyo to run on a Samsung Tocco?
The waiting sucks.
Bakachu did you get yours back, did you have to pay? I got exactly the same message on mine, dont know if I want to phone as have unlocked bootloader. They should repair FOC though as a hardware fault. If not I will complain to my CC company and get them to refund me the phone. This is my second repair as had a dust issue early on.

I have just got off the phone with HTC UK.
They tell me that they put “quotation” on the tracker until they investigate why the fault has occurred. I should phone back in a few days after the engineer has investigated.
So fairly confident this should be repaired under warranty as the phone looks brand new.
Mines still going under repair.
Numerous calls to HTC end up with a 'repairs take 14 working days' standard line.
However, the status on the web page has changed from 'quotation ready' to 'we are repairing your phone'
Mine was unlocked too, even with a couple of scratches, but there's no way I would accept responsibility for this design flaw. From what I understand, HTC is quite good at fixing obvious hardware issues under warranty on unlocked phones. Even this showed up in a blog a couple of days ago:
http://www.androidguys.com/2010/09/08/manage-nexus-broken-power-button/
All this waiting is making me eye up the G2 some more.... mmmm!
Acording to UPS mine arrived at 10am Wednesday. The status changed a week ago on HTC's site to 'we have recived your phone at HTC service centre'. Two days after it actually got there. Since then, nothing.
I would have thought that as it's a known issue they could just send out a refurb. I know in the US they will do that.
I'm not impressed with the service so far, it wasn't cheap in the first place and I'm left using a two year old Samsung piece of (insert explitive here).
It's not even rooted, totaly stock with a factory reset before i parcelled it up.
Well I phoned up to chase.
They have had the phone at their site for 4 working days, and I am told to expect to have it in a further 8 working days. Will mean 3 weeks without my exspensive phone.
They also stated that my phone was listed as out of warranty but asked me if that was the case, I told them definitely not. They said the engineer will begin work once he has proof of purchase, I asked what I am required to do they said just wait till I get it back.
They also told me their computer systems are currently not working properly so the online tracking may be wrong. So its just a long wait until I get the phone back.
I have my phone back in my hands now!
It's been rewiped and bootloader has been relocked.
bakachu,
Glad to hear you've got it back. If mine takes as long as yours I'll recive it in about a week.
Did they have to replace the screen? I heard of on instance were they did change the screen when it was sent in for the power button fault.
If mine comes back with an S-LCD screen I'll go mental.
Screen + everything else exactly the same Even still has my screen protector in perfect condition on it!

How can you check?
Mine was collected last Tuesday for a cracked screen repair.
Was delivered to them by UPS on Wednesday and all the online tracker says is received.
I've tried calling a few times and they've said that there is a bit of a back log of repairs at the moment.

I believe it's obvious if you turn it on in the dark next to a standard screen. A lot of light leaks around the sides.
I'll just compare it to my wife's when I get it back.
Hope the repair times speed up for you.

So when I get my quote for the repair should I enquire if it will be S-LCD?
My other option if it is is to get it back, send it to my mobile phone insurer and get it repaired/replace/cash through them.

Maybe you should try Youtube for comparison video's and see how much it would bother you.
A user named 'Rusty!' posted a link to one somewhere on here. I can't look for it at the moment, I'm still at work and Youtube is barred.
phone stuck in demo mode...I got mine from ebay. there is no way of connecting the device to the pc I have pc cable connected and windows mobile device center installed and zune installed. zune detects the device but windows mobile center does not. In order to install a rom you need usb connectivity. I can't get it at all with this device. Am I stuck with a knockoff demo? the guy wont even respond on ebay. he seems legit. I got it within the next day like he said. guess i'll just send this back and wait till monday and get a real one. or if anyone on here can help that would be great.
I put in my sim card. I can send and receive text messages and call people. i can log into my own hotmail account and get email. I can't log into facebook or marketplace or any of the other programs.
okay I figured it out myself. this is what you do. you have to turn the phone on pressing power button and hold down volume button and let it go into the red blue green white screen that shows the radio info and everything wait till usb comes up at the bottom and then install this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=810346
I am no longer in demo mode.
OMGsame thing happened to me from Craigslist, can u go step by step on how u installed it.. Thanks so much.
By the way did ur screen turn on every other minute showing the demo screen.
Dude you will be my hero if you can make it work for me.
when you install it will turn off at 11% don't panic it will come back on and finish installing.
i explained how to already.
Ok I get into the blue green screen and it says USB, then what?. Does the download have the program to install from.sorry I'm at work using my phone lol
download the signed rom. double click it. and go through the steps. do this from your pc
Ohh okay. Sorry lol. I'm excited BC I was so pissed that it was in demo mode..
was ur screen turning on and saying touch to see this phone or whatever before? And is it now after the rom
So what you guys have are store demos that someone sold you underhandedly and are most likely stolen? Why wouldn't you wait literally one day and get an actually HD7 from a store with a return policy and a warranty?
I got mine from a legit seller on ebay. not stolen. He sells only phones. he told me today that he is selling them regardless of the nov 8th release date.
If your right than there was just a mix up at htc and the wrong rom was loaded. In that case your seller should express ship a replacement and we can expect a lot more people to have your problem.
But what it sounds like to me is your seller has a store somewhere and htc gave him a couple demo units to display that he put on ebay early to make a few extra bucks. Not your fault, but I would be worried in that case that my phone doesn't have a warranty. No way htc honors any warranty issues with a demo IMEI and your seller isn't going to be any help either.
Im just happy I got a phone that works. All I had to do was replace the rom. I will most likely be replacing this phone in a year or two when a better version comes out. not that big of a deal. my friends are jealous. they have iphone4.
samsung focus
Ok i have the same problem, I bought a focus on craigslist and have the same issue, stuck in demo mode, the only problem i have is there is no rom or clue how to install it. Any help from you guys would be great.

dude, you are not getting it. What the other poster is trying to tell you is that most likely you will not be able to use any warranty on the phone, so if the phone breaks, you are out of a phone. Hopefully you can add insurance to it, but if the imei is flagged, then probably not.
Good luck.
This one worked well for me ! Thanks for posting.

Actually, the DEMO mode is for stores to display. I think we all know that. I heard some TMobile stores actually sold these devices after they ran out of stock. In addition, I have heard that several stores, or more, have had their demo versions stolen. Any of these would generate the situation you are in.
If you purchased one of these devices from a store...take it back. They should exchange it. If you did it over ebay or craigslist....you get what you pay for .....including the warrenty.
Demo mode? It was stolen lol
