Hi,
could you pleas help me. I was installing, wiping ROMs in safestrap and didnt pay attention and wipe stock ROM all the system everything. I can get to recovery mod but dont know what to do? Is it possilbe just download and install something in recovery?
Thank you
You actually have a couple options, I think.
If you have a physical microsd card and you can put it in your computer, you can put a zip on there and then flash it from safestrap. But that doesn't seem likely...
Thanks to sdshadow I have another idea. Hold both volume buttons when you turn the phone on. Then use you computer (run rsdlite or the Droid 4 utility) to flash an sbf file to your phone. Obviously this requires a data cable between your computer and phone.
I don't remember how it works, but I think you can transfer a zip from your computer to your phone using a data cable without booting an OS (using adb, I think).
Hopefully this helps or someone else can give you clearer instructions. I'll do a little more research if I need to.

thank you for answer. Trying to fix it fast before batter died. SD card I can use but dont know how to use safestrap because the safestrap doesnt come up. I can only go to recovery or fastboot but the option 2 is problem that RSD doesnt seen my device. its connect but I cant only unzip files in rsd but no flash it :/
I should still have installed CM 10.2 on rom 1 in safestrap but I dont know how to open safestrap. Because I wipe stock rom the stock rom I have still active and reboot device :/
Ah, I got recovery and SafeStrap mixed up. I have reached the end of my small knowledge.

try Boot Mode Selection Menu> Scroll down with volume down button, to BP Tools, Select with Volume UP button, may boot directly to SafeStrap.
if that does not work
may need to re-install drivers or at least look in window device manager to see if it is listed correctly
see my drivers errors
if drivers are correct, RSD lite/Droid 4 utility should see Droid 4.
The phone si ok.
Thank you very much for help!

I bricked my hero trying to flash gingerbread. Either because i didn't flash a kernel or i might have overlooked something i should've read. But my phone bricked. Long story but i ended up having to put my sdcard in a friends phone and formatting it, then downloaded something i found on G1 forum and dropped it on my sdcard (not smart i know). Then i took my sdcard out of his phone with that file on it and put it back in mine. Whatever that file was allowed me to now be able to boot into my recovery again/HBOOT&Fastboot. But i CANNOT boot past recovery. I didn't have a nandroid backup anymore since i formatted so i grabbed a 2.1 ROM off of here, something stable, and figured i could drop it on the sdcard and flash it. but nothing. Either it's not completely flashing the ROM, or sometimes it aborts it. So i tried a cm6 ROM. Same thing. It won't flash ANYTHING. Could my recovery have gotten damaged when i formatted my sdcard? i'm using clockworkmods 2.5. I'm on a mac that i recently had to factory reset. i downloaded sdk last night to try to manually install a different recovery. but i can't use htc sync since it's for pc. so i found a another program that will replace htc sync, but i still can't sync because i have to enable usb debugging for it to sync to my phone. and i don't know how to enable usb debugging from recovery. It has blown my mind. i have no idea what to try anynore. If anyone can help out at ALL. please do.
Try going into recovery and going into the partitions menu.
Inside that menu, format the system before you flash another ROM.
Factory reset skips over the /system file.
Try that and let me know what happens.
(I'm assuming you dont have data or anything since you factory resetted)
I guess. Disclaimer: this deletes data
hmm.
Okay so i booted into recovery.
Did a full wipe even though there isn't anything to wipe.
Then formatted the system.
Then installed zip.
Then Reboot system now.
I gave it 15 minutes just to be sure, and it never left the boot logo.
Again like i said it isn't completely flashing the ROM.
It unzips it and gets to where it says "installing package"
and just stops.
From the time i select the zip file that i want to flash, till the time that it says it's done, takes maybe 5 seconds.
That's why i thinking it's my recovery. It might be damaged or something.
If there was a way to enable usb debugging from clockworks recovery then i could manually install a different recovery. butt... i'm getting no where.
Get to a PC 1st and foremost. Go to the HTC website and download the RUU stock. Nevermind about adk and USB yet. You need to be back to stock to have a clean backup again. Once you have downloaded the stock rom be patient and charge the phone beforehand. Hopefully this gets you to stock again. Google Z4root, download and place in the root of the SD. In the market get an apk installer an install Z4. After run Z4 for root. Download and install clockwork after that and make sure you flash the recovery at the top before backing up. Then after that try installing 2.3 but let me know which rom you are trying to use. The one I have needed an different version of clockwork so read carefully. Hope this helps.
mmm a Gingerbread SuperHero....
Also redownload the rom. Could be a bad download.
mmm a Gingerbread SuperHero....
okay i'm going to try that. it's been so long since i've downloaded an RUU or Rooted. Can i flash the RUU like any other? will it be a zip file? Because back when i rooted and had to download the RUU before i could root, i think i installed it using htc sync. But my phone can only be recognized as a storage device. Since i cant enable debugging. I'll see what happens cause the only way i can think to get the stock ROM on there is to flash it. But seeings as how nothing else in the world is completely flashing i might stumble.
It's definitely not the ROMs i've tried like 5 or 6. Three of them being one's i've recently had on there. Oh and I didn't think there was but one Gingerbread ROM out for the hero. And was it the 3.0 clockworkmod? Cause that's what i skipped over thinking it was just extra, Since i had just updated my clockworkmod in ROM manager to 2.5
Wait if i go back to stock. isn't there a chance of loosing root forever?

I "Had" a Similar Problem...
What worked for me was 1 of the 2?
Because I did Both Steps, I'm not really sure what actually fixed it, but all I cared about was it being fixed! With that said, try this!!
1st thing I did was Reflash the Radio, 2.42.02.10.29.zip
2nd thing I did was Wipe Everything, then Flash a New Kernel "I Used Deca's #43" If that Doesn't Work Try DecaFuct #589!
Hope this Helps!
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Okay i'll try that! Because i can't even go back to stock since i can't sync with any computer. Because i can't enable usb debugging. Unless there is a way to flash a stock RUU.. i even tried different things in fastboot but it didn't work apparently because of usb debugging. (that's what someone else said). But I will try that and I'll let you know how it goes!
That didn't work either.
Are you using Windows XP to get all this done? I would try finding a PC that has Vista. Or try another PC all together. IDK, just a thought, give it shot, you don't have anything to lose. I wish you luck my friend.
You definitely need the 3.whatever clockwork flash that goes with the gingerbread that's posted here. Clockwork turns orange once its done right. Also don't use setcpu. Adw fc's a lot with it. But that's for later info. For now..
If your able to get into recovery you can save yourself. Rooting again is very one click simple with Z4 in my first post. You need a stock rom to save yourself now though. GET TO A WINDOWS COMPUTER at least with Vista but works great with 7.

LOL I still tell my 18 yo boy that everyday.
lmao! Damn kids
Best bet is to get to a Windows computer, preferably Windows 7. Plug it by USB and you need to get the drivers working for Sync to work at all and get USB debugging back on your phone. Leave the phone off before plugging it in. Plug it in and if the amber light comes on, if so turn on the phone and windows should give a USB notification and try to install drivers. This needs to happen if you want to get back to stock. And you do want back to stock to backup to in case you ever need to take it back to Sprint. They will flag your phone/account so you can't take it anywhere if you show them it's been rooted or custom rom anything. Z4 will also let you unroot the phone to do this.
If all else, I'd try flashing a different rom all together REMEMBER TO WIPE 1ST! then flash the rom. Maybe this will get it to fully install and enable usb, which the 1st thing I'd do when you get going again is get back to stock, root, and backup right away. Hopefully something works for you but let us know please. I'm pretty intrested in how this turns out for you and maybe can help others in this type of case.
Guys please read what all i've said before posting. I'm not completely stupid. i've tried flashing more than just one rom. i tried flashing about 6 roms, a radio, an two different kernels. Nothing flashes. no yellow progress bar... i have a bad recovery. And i can't go back to stock or manually install a new recovery or anything that includes htc sync because i can't enable usb debugging.. i've tried on a windows 7 computer, and have htc sync on it.
If you cant flash anything in recovery, nor can you enable usb debugging. (to convert to stock, or fastboot intalling, or manual intalling, adb, ect... ) then what am i supposed to do?
I think i'm the first person in the world to have this problem on a hero.

haha if you turn it on while it's plugged in, it goes into fastboot usb. Which i tried running commands but like i said.. there's no way to enable debugging so i get "device not found" in return on cmd.
Hey Karrma, go to this post and try this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8551240&highlight=hercimg.zip#post8551240
It worked for me after I borked my hero and couldn't do anything but fastboot.
Hope it works for you.
Hey everyone,
So this is definitely a noob problem and I would like to apologize in advance for taking up your time. I am extremely new to rooting and would be extremely appreciative of some advice!
I bought my phone (a Motorola Milestone) already rooted and running G.O.T. 2.2.1 back in November. I wanted to upgrade to the latest CyanogenMod 7 and, in my own stupidity, I followed a Droid tutorial instead of a Milestone tutorial. This led me to install Clockwork ROM Manager and flash their Recovery Menu - which, I've now learned, is not compatible with the Milestone.
So, I now have no access to the Recovery Menu (the phone simply boots up normally). I still have Superuser Permissions and can access the Bootloader.
What I would like your input on is the steps I should take to regain access to the Recovery Menu. I feel like, since I have root access, I shouldn't need to start from scratch (e.g. completely re-root the device), but I don't know for sure.
Is it possible to somehow just flash OpenRecovery? Or do I need to do all ofthe steps listed at addictivetips.c0m/mobile/how-to-root-motorola-milestone/?
I saw one tutorial for flashing a new recovery program (theunlockr.c0m/2009/10/15/how-to-flash-a-new-recovery-image-if-you-are-already-rooted/) and it seems easy enough. My only issue then is that OpenRecovery is not distributed as an .img file but rather as an "update.zip" and a folder.
Again, I'm sorry for using up your time with what probably is a ridiculously simplistic question. I require the phone for my work and the thought of accidentally bricking it is enough to give me pause from doing anything else. Suggestions would be really welcome!
You can flash GOT again which already has the Vulnerable Recovery in it... or just flash the vulnerable recovery itself.
Good luck.
Sent from my Milestone using XDA Premium App
The main issue there is that I never did the initial flash of GOT or vulnerable recovery (I bought the phone pre-rooted) so I don't know how exactly to go about that. In light of the end goal (I want to upgrade the phone to the latest CyanogenMod 7), what would be the least amount of steps to accomplish this?
I think if I could flash the recovery and then flash CM7 (with a backup of all my stuff somewhere in between) that would do the trick?
Can't you try that sbf flash thing? Or is that only for droids?

Try this:
1) Download RSD Lite - http://uploaded.to/file/pifx1b
2) Download Vulnerable recovery for MM - http://www.mediafire.com/?jzzjmmrvwkz
3) Unpack and install RSD Lite, then unpack vulnerable recovery.
4) Open RSD Lite and click on '...' button, chose sbf file with vulnerable recovery (unpacked in 3rd step).
5) Power on your Milestone in bootloader mode (power + d-pad up).
6) Connect usb cable to Milestone, RSD lite will show that phone is connected
7) Press start in RSD lite and wait until RSD lite end procedures (it will boot when process will be done). Shutdown phone.
8) Turn on Milestone by pressing power + x on the keyboard. It should get you to recovery mode.
Thank you for the detailed steps and the links! I REALLY appreciate them!
Once I've done those, I should then be able to do a backup through the recovery menu and flash the latest CM7 release? Or are there other steps I need to do?

When you will be done, download (from here - http://code.google.com/p/androidiani-openrecovery/downloads/list) and copy to sd card Androidiani Open Recovery (update.zip and OpenRecovery folder should be in / of sdcard, eg.: /sdcard/update.zip ; /sdcard/OpenRecovery).
Then (if you want to flash CM7) you need to download CM from here - https://github.com/downloads/nadlabak/android/update-cm-7.1.0-RC10-11.06.14-Milestone-signed.zip and GApps (http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip) and copy it to /sdcard/OpenRecovery/updates
When you copy AOR and CM7 to your sd card, you need to shutdown your phone and power it on with pressed power + x. It will take you to the recovery (screen with exlamation in background) and then you will need to press vol up + camera button. If you see blue menu, choose from option 'apply update.zip'. It takes you to AOR. From AOR menu choose Apply Update, in next step choose package with CM7 (update-cm-7.1.0-RC10-11.06.14-Milestone-signed.zip) and when update will be over do the same with gapps. Return to the main menu and do 'Wipe dalvik cache' and 'Wipe cache'. Reboot and CM7 should load now.
Awesome! This all makes sense. I will have time later this week to give it a try (I can't wait to update this phone, it has now decided that if I receive a couple calls and also a couple texts, it will freeze completely on me. Not impressed!) - thanks again!
Another simple question: When I copy over CM7 and the Google Apps, do I leave them in .zip format or should I unpack them first?

Both - CM7 and Google Apps should be packed and moved to OpenRecovery/updates folder.
Thank you for your awesome instructions!
I ran into a few hiccups (at first, I didn't have the USB drivers installed and then I ran into an issue where the com.android.phone process kept quitting so I did a complete data wipe on top of the cache wipes) but I now have CM7 installed and running.
However, I've run into a new problem: I have no network access! (cellular voice or data!). The only carrier the phone sees is WIND (I am on Fido). It previously had no trouble at all... I think it is because of the Baseband version?
I noticed that, with the flashing and everything, the baseband version has changed from 3GSMEPU91A_U_91.09.00I (which worked) to 3GSMEPU91A_U_91.09.04I (not a big change but maybe the cause of my problem?)
I know that the phone is not meant to be used on Fido but it was previously unlocked and working fine... Did I miss a step somewhere?
As of right now, my phone is useless to me so help would greatly be appreciated!
EDIT1: I did configure the Mobile Networks/Access Point Names settings (as per what I used before the format) so that is not the problem...
EDIT2: Under status, the phone does list my correct phone number but has the network as "unknown".
Have you changed the baseband to Canada in AOR? It's either that or Telus when flashing in AOR.
What exactly did you do with the APN? You shouldn't have any issues configuring it to Fido.
Sent from my Milestone using XDA Premium App
I hadn't changed the baseband in AOR - I thought I might have to but I didn't want to do anything that could be detrimental.
I just applied the "canada.zip" and, indeed, it looks like that did the trick!
As for the APN, I just put in the ones found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=537829 as that is what I had to do to get the data working before.
edit: I've been playing around with the phone and everything seems to be working! (even the AMAZING "Create a 3G Wireless Hotspot" feature!) Honestly, I cannot thank you enough adamz667 and skadude66!
So I have sucessfully rooted the wife's original Verizon Moto Droid and I have installed CWM via ROM Manager. I have performed a backup of her current ROM.
From the looks of things here, I will just load the ROM I want to flash onto her sd card and then flash it via ROM Manager. Is this correct? If it fails half way through the flash, can I still enter CWM via a key sequence to re-flash/restore the phone to its original state using the backup on the card from ROM Manager?
Someone mentioned to me using the project elite ROM due to its stability. I can't find a link to that. Can someone point me in the right direction?
I gave her this phone when I bought my Samsung Droid Charge when it came out back last March. I can flash ROMs & Kernels on that phone all day long but the Moto Droid is an entirely different animal. I want to be sure of my fail-safes before I flash anything here.
Thanx In Advance for Your Help
Okay ... cwm just didn't take the first time I flashed it. I am now able to enter CWM from a powered off state.
[Q] If I flash a rom and it doesn't take half way through the flash, will I still be able to enter cwm and install the backup of her current rom? That ROM is not in a zip format on the sd card. It is a tar file and the other components in a folder.
I want to be sure I can recover the phone if I experience a bad flash before I attempt anything. Remember, this is my WIFE'S phone !!! LOL
Any help appreciated.
Edit: Also, I installed RSD lite on my computer but when I open it and hook the phone up, it doesn't see the phone. At least, from what I can tell it doesn't. I click 'show' device and nothing happens. Is this a flashing tool or do I put the ROM on sd card and flash via rom manager? And the fail-safe !! Gotta have the fail-safe !!!
1.) Make sure you have flashed CWM!
2.) If you have CWM flashed, and you made a nanodroid backup before you started flashing a rom, then yes, if it doesn't "take" halfway through the flash, you can pull the battery, hold the power button + X and then restore to your backup.
3.) The ROM needs to be a Zip file... it won't work if it's a .tar file (at least I don't think...never tried... lol)
4.) Yes you can recover your phone anytime as long as you can get into CWM and have a nanodroid backup. If you are bricked, this is where RSD lite comes in.
5.) RSD Lite is very picky, and there are many things that can go wrong. Make sure you have all the official motorola drivers installed onto your computer (Link:http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-...tware_and_Drivers/USB-and-PC-Charging-Drivers). Make sure you are running as administrator... Make sure that you are following the correct procedure (plug in phone when attached to computer via USB, let drivers install, power down phone, power on phone + UP direction). There are various threads on google on how to perform this if you're having problems.

And there's the rub... The backup from rom manager is not a zip file, so it has to be restored via rom mgr. That does me no good if I only have recovery !! How do I perform a nandroid backup? So I end up with a zip file?
Hmmm that's odd, no edit button .... maybe it goes away after x amt of time. At any rate, nevermind the above question about zandroid ... I found it ... that calls for a great big duh !!!
I do greatly apreciate you addressing my above questions. I feel I've got the direction now that I should be able to wing it from here.
Thanx Again and All The Best to You and Yours for the coming year.

Hey all My friend gave me his Droid Bionic running ICS update and he said he was trying to get it to work with att BUT while in the process he tried to put in a different build.prop but he deleted the one out of his system folder. The phone boots on a black screen and will not connect to the pc he said he also tried doing the recovery thing to it,
So. No build.prop
Black screen boot.
And no way to mount.

If the data on this phone is no longer needed, you could alway flash a stock JB 4.1.2 using RSD.
That'll surely fix all the problem except data loss.

You didn't state that you did this. So, I'll start with the obvious.
1. Fully charge and then power off the phone.
2. Press & hold the volume + and volume -.
3. Power on the phone.
4. Once the boot menu comes up, use volume - to move to AP Fastboot & select wit volume +.
5. Plug in the phone to your PC and run RSD Lite. Click Config>Flash modes>Fastboot Mode.
6. Flash the phone with ICS or JB.
If you choose BP SBF Flash, on the menu, RSD may not work right. If you try to downgrade it, you can brick it.
Let me know how it goes.

I would definitely not recommend flashing JB. Stay with ICS.
Once you go to JB you are locked down with lots of restrictions.
If you stay with ICS you can root easier, and you have more choices of custom roms that you can use.
If you go JB, you can only use JB custom roms.
You can use either safestrap or bootstrap if you stay with ICS. If you do JB, you are stuck with safestrap.
Stay with ICS! If you want JB, only use custom JB roms, don't flash them through RSD.

RSDLite does noto see the phone at all. Making it impossible to flash. I have tried 6 different cords including the one that came with the phone. And if you read one of my earlier posts you will see where I said rsd isn't working. I cant seem to figure out how to get it to work either. Ive done the drivers several times along with new cords..

Do you see a device in Windows Device Manager? Can you get to the menu I talked about on the phone. RSD won't see the phone if Windows doesn't load the drives correctly. Do you have the Android SDK loaded? That can help w/ manual flashing... and drivers. It's important to get the phone in the AP Fastboot mode to get the proper connectivity.
I forgot to activate rom slot 1 when flashing so it installed on the stock rom, which said if this was done it would not work, and now the phone will power off at the motorola logo. I made a backup with cwm and it is on my computer as a few .md5 and .win files. It also wont let me load safestrap even though i hold down the buttons to go into bootloader. Please help i really need it fixed

Can you get to AP fastboot? If so, you can then use this utility found here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2207384
You would want to do the full wipe install of jelly bean, so option 1. This should make your phone basically factory new, where you'll have to reroot it and redo safestrap/CM.

I would try that, but when I start AP fastboot, it reads: battery low, cannot program. I have left it plugged in for 24 hours and still the same message. When I select BP tools, the battery icon shows up with a "?" sign in it instead of a charge percentage.
EDIT- It has begun recharging when I chose BP Diag, and I will update when I attempt to run the razr utility
I would like to say the utility worked! I am very happy that it was fixed. Thank you very much!
