My wife just told me that her Nook HD+ is uninstalling apps on it's own. Have any of you heard of this happening before on Nook HD+? It stays on her Android phone but is removed from the tablet.
I haven't seen this happen but just asking because the wife is pissed at me for this happening on something I modded for her. LOL

What is she running on her HD+? Stock or some version of CM? And are you sure they are uninstalling or just the icons missing from the home screen?

If it helps, I followed your instructions for the HD+ when I modded it.

So you are not really having to re-install the apps, just put the icons back on the home screen?
Why don't you try a third party launcher and see if the disappearing icons quit disappearing.

Various apps. Wife hasn't been able to remember the names but the types were flashcards app (like the 3x5 cards we used in school), scientific calculator, biology and a game.
Sorry, doing the best I can with a wife that has a poor memory of app names.

I was just wondering if they were apps she got at the Amazon app store. Sometimes those get flacky if they can't verify that the app store is installed and running.

You could try scanning the ALL tab under My Apps on the Play Store - that shows all the apps you've ever installed on any device registered against your Google account. That might jog her memory. If they're not listed there then maybe, as leapinlar suggested, they came from the Amazon app store and have fallen prey to the flakiness he's observed.
(Backup tools like Titanium Backup can be set to do regular app backups which could provide a useful recovery point in cases like this. Not so useful if the user can't remember what the apps were called, though...)

Maybe she downloaded apps from play store, then removed hers Google account, so all apps associated got Uninstalled.
If its using cm11 there was a bug where app icons would disappear from the launcher after app updates.
Apps uninstalling themselves though... Besides user error or bad judgement I can think of many possible scenarios where apps could be removed/disappear.
I wonder too if google's new app checker service improvement could remove them if it didn't like them. Perhaps even being triggered during an automatic update.
[Ah yes, there is what I was looking for: "Google Play scans apps that are uploaded for malware. If an app is later discovered to be malicious, Google can automatically remove it from the devices it’s been installed on." -> http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/cracked-android-apps-and-games-read-this-before-downloading/
And that is only one way it can happen.]

Many apps are usable but not optimized at all such as Google Reader which would be awesome with a UI similar to Gmail. Also while Kindle works the background image doesn't take up the whole screen and the page turns are choppy. Anyone hear of if and when these apps will be updated? I just got my Xoom so I haven't been following this for long.

You must be. I see all the magazines - I'm using CM7. I got a free esquire a couple of weeks ago when someone mentioned subscribing with a PC. I was able to download that magazine with the new app. Newpapers don't work.

Children's speaking books
Doesn't appear to work for the sample "The Elephant's Child" speaking book.
Gives error "File type not supported"
The children's books are still not supported by the app. At least the ones that can read themselves to the kids.

Something I can definitely live without (at least for the time being). There are a bunch of similar interactive books sold as apps in the Android Market.
On all my other Android devices I can install apps from my laptop via the Play website. Can I not do that on my Fire HD even though it tells me I can, or am I missing something?
I am curious as well if there is a way to tweak the kfhd to download more apps from the playstore...like lie to it that ot is some other ics device

Ummmm. No, as far as I know. I don't see how or why this would work until the KF2 gets a real OS on it. Once it down, I do not see why it shouldn't. For now though, I don't know of any ways it's possible. Back to browsing on the device for you! [EDIT] I was wrong! The app is on my device. It was sitting in front of me for an hour or so when I turned it on to do stuff and found the app I pushed on it there! So it does work in theory, it may be slow for you, or some other issue, but it should work it seems!

Yes, this IS possible. I will look into it and post. It's a file you have to tweak, I did it before on tablets I just am completely blanking out since it's been a year or two. You will probably need something like RomToolbox. That's what I bought ages ago and use on every device I hack, just a personal preference but you will need a "build.prop editor".
Here use this app it will switch you device to make it look like a different device and allows you to download more apps.

What I did was move the Kindle app out of the system folder with Titanium Backup (requires root). I may not have needed to do that because my next step was to "backup and uninstall" (again with Titanium Backup). I then went to Google Play/Market and re-installed from there. Now it works fine.
Update: you do have to change Kindle app from a system app to user app if you want to do a "backup/uninstall". Another option may be to just do a "force remove", but I wanted to have the app backed up.

While removing the built in Kindle App and installing the Play Store version does allow you to launch it directly, it is not the same app. The Play Store version does not have the Kindle specific features such as X-Ray and Text-to-Speech.

This is a question that has been brought up and looked into since the first generation KFs. Many skilled developers have looked into the issue and the answer is always the same...
While it may not be impossible to port apps like the launcher, reader and Silk to non-Amazon ROMs, the work involved would be way more than what it's worth.

Thanks Ph0enix. I figured as much. I also discovered that this past December, Amazon updated their iOS kindle app to have the X-Ray feature. It's a little disappointing that they're hanging the general android base out to dry. I could see if the point of withholding features was to drive more sales of their Fire tablet but now iPhones and iPads are (costly) alternatives.
I am running stock 2.1.1 non rooted on my HD+ and for some reason today my settings app started crashing whenever I click on settings/device info/battery. I use this a lot to see what has been using my battery and how long my battery lasts and it has never crashed before today. I have tried restart in my HD+ multiple times and I have even tried force stopping the settings app. Nothing has helped. Any suggestions of what to do?

By third party do you mean side loaded or through Google play? Last night I downloaded soundcloud. Should I try uninstalling that to see if it fixes the problem?
