Hey guys, I've noticed a weird bug with stock 4.2.1 on my Nexus 4, and was wondering if anyone is experiencing the same thing. If not, then perhaps it is the hardware and not the software, but the nature of this bug has lead me to believe it is software-related.
Let me first say, right off the bat, that I have had no other issues with my phone, and that when I play games or watch movies, the volume is loud, clear, crisp--just all around excellent. However, when I use the speakerphone on a call, it seems to be... quieter than everything else. So I tried playing around with it, and discovered something interesting.
The next time you're in a call, put it on speakerphone. Note how loud it sounds to you. Then, turn the volume down one notch, and then put it back up to the max volume again (I've only experimented with it being at max already, then turning it down one notch, and then back up).
Does it sound WAY louder? And does it sound distorted, almost overblown? Why would it be like that during a call, and why would adjusting the volume down and then back up again have such a result if it was NOT software related? And, furthermore, why would it be blown out and distorted here where as for everything else it sounds superb?
Let me know your thoughts--maybe I need to RMA? I got this one at T-Mobile (I didn't have to pay the equipment installment due to my current plan, so it was cheaper to buy it @ $200 from them).
Thanks!
Same Here .. I believed it was the only with this problem since no one had said.
I think is Software Issue.
Yeah I noticed that no one had mentioned this, but I believe if it's software then it must be affecting everyone. At least, it should be affecting stock users. I guess I noticed this sooner because I use speaker phone when I'm driving in the car, since my ragtag bluetooth receiver that outputs through a tape that's plugged into it and inserted into the tape deck only transmits music and notifications, not calls--for some reason--over the car speakers. Just got sick of plugging into the phones headphone jack every time I got in and out of the car! lol

See but mine doesn't crackle or do any of that stuff during calls or anything else. And it's not blown out sounding during anything other than calls where I have lowered the volume and then put it back up to max right after. I don't think the problem is the same as it is here, it just seems similar, for sure.
Also, when not on speaker phone, the in call volume is perfect and without issue. It's limited to specifically what I mentioned in the original post.
Thanks for the reply, but I'm talking about it being overtly loud and only being so when adjusting the volume down and back up to max, and that prior to that, the volume is just a bit on the quiet side at the maximum. Not crackling/popping/etc!
cool..sorry about that.
Exact same situation with me.little buzz while on call nothing else.

No problem! Appreciate the attempted help =]
So I recently rooted my phone and installed CWM and currently am using a Nandroid backup of the Tmobile Stock ROM. Here's my issue: The microphone doesn't work when making phone calls. I'm trying to figure out if it's an issue with the phone itself or if I did something when I rooted/flashed a rom. The speakerphone microphone works but in regular calls, nothing gets picked up by the microphone. Any ideas?

I think we have the same issue. Here's my thread regarding my problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41872872
People on the other line say my voice is very muffled and distant. And I also don't hear anything on the right side when recording a video. It must be a defect with the bottom microphone. I wish there was a fix rather than having to get the phone replaced.

Thanks for the reply. Is your new HTC One working correctly now? Clearer sound on calls and records both left and right channels of audio?
Also, you said you went to the dealer to get it replaced. I ordered my phone from T-Mobile.com and they said I would have to mail it in first and then they'd mail me a replacement. I wish there was an easier way.

I went today, and for the moment it seems to work okay, I brought my phone directly from the dealer, and they replaced me with another new phone.
It's definitely an issue with my bottom microphone because when I make a call using the speakerphone, the other caller can hear me perfectly, since the speakerphone mode uses the back mic. But regular calls using the bottom mic sound awful.
Has anyone been able to get a replacement that has resolved the microphone issue? I just bought my HTC One from T-mobile a little over a week ago and I'm debating whether or not I should return it to the store to get replacement(which may have not solve the issue) or to send it to HTC through product warranty and hope for them to repair it.
I've got the exact same issue here in Australia, just the last few days when I make a call the person at the other end can hardly hear me but when I put it on speakerphone its fine. Looks like I'll have to return it. I bet I don't get a replacement. Over here the phone has to be sent back to be fixed. I had terrible issues with my Galaxy S3 that was finally replaced after being sent back twice. Thought my luck would change with the One but looks like that isnt the case. Very frustrating.
Can anyone shed any light on this issue yet? Mine messed up out of nowhere... Went to a concert a week ago and recorded a video and it sounded fantastic, a week later however, when I record a video all I get is very loud static. Same goes with voice calls. If I set it to speakerphone they can hear me fine. Idk whether to contact HTC or AT&T I have the insurance + warranty.
Any help would be appreciated. I don't really wanna flash or root it yet because of warranty issues and what not.

I had the same issue with the loud static through the bottom mic but mine was from dropping it no more than 3 feet from the ground with the otter box on. I had my carrier send it out for repairs and the replaced the flex board and the bottom speaker and mic and since I've gotten it back, I have no more issues with static on my phone calls.
However, I am getting a lot of complaints of people not hearing me when I speak or it sounds like I'm too distant. Now I'm frustrated.

Hmm did it cost you any money (if you don't mind me asking)?
HTC wants me to ship it out and I haven't contacted AT&T about it yet.
Idk what the better choice would be!
I'm glad your static issue is gone though! It's very frustrating to not be able to make phone calls on my cell phone...

It didn't cost me anything as it was under warranty. I got the phone the day it was released.
I'm not sure how it is in America, but I'm with Rogers and they deal with all repairs. So, they sent my phone out to HTC and had it returned to me at no cost.
To be honest I don't even know how it works here either. I've never had to send a phone back.
It's seems as if I can go through HTC directly or through AT&T.
Looks like im going to have to do some research!
Same problem, just crept up out of nowhere. Speakerphone works during calls, but callers tell me I am going in and out, so I was like, what. I tried to record a video right next to my tv, no audio. Hmmm, opened voice recorder and I was yelling into phone and it came out almost silent. Voice search is also useless unless I scream at my phone, that's what really started this whole thing wondering what is going on as I really do use Now for alot. Owned phone from day one, 64 GB ATT model. What gives.

I dropped my phone from literally four inches above a hardwood floor - EDIT - possibly relevant detail - I dropped it while in the act of recording video - and had serious static issues immediately after that.
Before sending it in for repair, I tried gently rapping it a few times in various ways ( see http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percussive_maintenance ).
I also experimented with recording a few really loud sounds thinking some kind of automatic gain control on the dual membrane mic may have gotten stuck at an extreme value.
One way or another the problem went away and never came back. I consider myself lucky.

I just called HTC and they have basically told me I am out of luck and aren't going to do a thing for me. I purchased an unlocked AT&T HTC ONE brand new for 800 ish dollars. Since I am in Canada, that's their loop hole I guess. Either way, I don't care what country I'm in, I paid 800 for a product that clearly has a hardware issue.

This is how I fixed mine.
Start the recording app, you'll see that the visualizer indicates that it is recording sound, it's the static.
now grab 2 bristles from a toothbrush and gently stick them in the bottom mic
rotate them gently, you'll notice the visualizer getting smaller if you're doing it right, means less static coming in.
do this until the static is gone. worked for me, took 5 minutes.
Same Issue
I am having the same problem now. My phone is one month old and it was working fine and then i rooted the phone two weeks back it still was working fine and then today suddenly i didn't hear anything when my friend called me thought it to be signal issue then it happened same with every one of my calls. Do i have to unroot and lock my boot loader before i take it to HTC or at&t?
Possible Fix
Hey all,
Here's what I did to fix my Sprint HTC One
I went into system --> build.prop
I changed persist.audio.handset.mic=digital to persist.audio.handset.mic=analog
Reboot
This solved my issue after I've tried many things. Here were some temporary fixes that worked for me before I found this permanent fix:
Screaming into the microphone for around a minute. After that, the rest of the call seemed to work. Note: The microphone is on the bottom, underneath the bottom speaker.
Covering the second microphone that's on the BACK of the HTC One (you'll see it in the top right). That helped as well.
I hope this helps someone.
Cheers.
I too had a problem after about six months... No one could hear me when I spoke into my phone. So I took a needle and carefully put it in the small hole in the bottom, scraping against one of the sides - and voila: up came some pocketwhool (is that the word for that hairy dust that comes out of nothing in the pocket all the time...?)
The microphone has worked perfectly ever since... ??? ?
Hi everyone. While on a call I can barely hear the other person no matter what I do. I turn the call volume all the way up and the sound stays the same. Otherwise this phone works great, Should I take it back to verizon?
I'm having the same problem, have to move my ear around to hear and the fact that my battery goes from 4% to 90% in 1 min and now charges when it wants to .... So I'll go back to my lg g3

after some time I got use to it. I think its the covering on the top speaker that makes the volume so low. After re positioning my ear I can hear it well enough but I still wish it was a bit louder.
That being said, I find no fault in this phone, its gorgeous and really fast and comes with no frills android experience so I decided to stick it out
When you call granny, does she keep saying "Huh?! Wut?!" or does the conversation flow pretty well? Rate this thread to express how you feel about the Google Pixel 2's call quality. A higher rating indicates that calls are clear and crisp, and that regardless of background noise, you can hear the other party clearly (and with ample volume) and they can hear you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Terrible, constant high pitch sound always present when screen is on and a clicking sound that is like a clock. Always the same rate and always present even during calls. RMAing my Pixel 2 and my wifes Pixel 2 for the same reason.
My Pixel 2 has the same type of problem. When you are on a phone call and using the phone against your ear, you hear digital interference noises and ticking sounds. It is so very annoying and unusable.
I heard that turning NFC off help this for the 2 xl
I made one call today from my house and didnt have that problem but my NFC has been off since setting up the phone. I am on Fi and wifi calling as well. One off thing though is I did pair the device up with my Jeep and was playing pandora when a call came through over bluetooth. My Kenwood receiver picked the call up and immediately maxxed out the volume, the beep was loud enough to crackle my aftermarket speakers. Scared the **** outta me. I just immediately hit end call and dropped the volume down. I wouldnt doubt his very well may be an issue Kenwood though.
No issue here with call clarity. Maybe a small step down from my Turbo. But if there is one thing Motorola always nails is their radios.
Side question though, should these phones have a Face Sensor that locks the screen while on a phone call? Mine isn't locking and I was doing all manner of crazy things when my cheek touched the phone.

A little google searching suggests there's a link to Adaptive Brightness. I've re-enabled AB and will see what happens today.
Call quality seems to be good, but I have noticed an intermittent high pitched electronics whine. It's not on every call and not on every call with every person.
It's not a *fix*, but I find myself making and receiving actual phone calls less and less. These days just about every app has a high definition VOIP option available, so I find myself using that a lot. Hangouts, Messenger, Signal, etc. If you're making a lot of business calls daily or talking on the phone a lot with someone over a traditional voice call, I could see it as a dealbreaker. But moving forward, if there's a slight bug I can live with, some minor electronics whine over a legacy communication channel would be it.
I noticed the same problem from my pixel.. I was on a voice call using the Duo app, there a very low volume static clicking sound. I turned off NFC as this thread suggested and the clicking noise goes away; however, there's still some static noise. I wonder if this is a hardware issue...
Can any of you tell us where you got your GP2? Is it a Verizon Phone or did you order it from Google Store?
I just noticed this issue today, it is in line with the rest of your comments ("clock ticking", interference sounds, etc)
I have a Verizon Pixel 2, but I do not think it is limited to their phones. Hopefully Google is able to patch the issue in a future software update by disabling whatever is causing the issue during a phone call.
I assume a software fix will resolve the issue. It would be shocking to go to production with such a glaring problem.

Is the Pixel XL screen burn-in not a glaring problem?
Is anyone else having an issue where you place a call and nobody can hear you on the other end?
Just got my Pixel 2 XL Black last night, No clicking or Buzzing sounds. Call quality is clear. Speaker is bloody loud had to turn it down VS my original Pixel XL.Side Note NFC is on I use NFC daily.
My Pixel2 from google store works perfect. No sound issues. In fact better than my Pixel. The signal at my home left my pixel constantly jumping onto wifi, now I have bars and never goes on wifi. Using Verizon pre-paid.
Tried a GSM call today (Pixel 2 to Nexus 5X) and it was fine. Nothing wrong / Nothing special.
Generally I use VoIP that works also good.

I have the "new" Bold N1 phone on android 9 pie, and I thought this was an issue with the phone BUT the speakerphone and headphone volume in calls(media and notification sounds is loud enough) is LOWER than every other volume on the phone and super ****ing quiet. When you go to the sound settings it gives you 4 slider bars for volume, media, ringer etc and they give you a test sound when you lift your finger off the slider, well the call volume(not the ringer) is all the way up and WAY quieter than every other slider bar test sound when it is all the way up, I tested the same slider on my pixel 3 with android pie 9 and the exact same thing, does anyone know how to make the speakerphone/in call/in call headphone volume louder? it seems like its capped as the rest of the sounds on the devices are loud and clear.
I was about to do an RMA for the device but the same problem is on the pixel 3 as well running android 9, has anyone ran into this? If you are on android 9 on any phone, Go into your settings and goto sounds and put every slider up high and listen and see if the call volume beep slider is MUCH lower than the other sliders and reply to this please or if you have a fix tell me! it makes talking on the phone almost unusable with how quiet it is and is making me want to pull my hair out.
As proof its android 9 pie and NOT either of the phones I downloaded a secondary texting app called Textnow and placed a phone call through there and low and behold the speakerphone was loud and so was my headphones but it uses data and is not my actual phone number so not usable full time so something is happening with the actual phone software app on the phones and not a speaker defect. I have tried different phone apps too from the playstore but they all connect to the same dialer and therefore use the phone instead of textnow using their own dialer/phone software.

I do not have this problem either on my Pixel 3 or this phone. It's loud enough to be used a speaker phone during call. I am on T-Mobile.
I haven't had any loudness issues, but I am experiencing the infamous Android Bluetooth "stutter". Overall, for 200 bucks, it's a pretty decent phone. OLED screen is worth the price alone. Headphone jack and wireless charging are nice. Build quality seems pretty good. Almost stock software is a bonus. But this is a budget phone, so... Haven't noticed much lag that you might expect from a device with the P70 chipset. The screen is actually a little "punchier" than the 3aXL I had. At least it seemed so to me. But again, it costs 200 bucks (from Blu/Bold with $50 launch discount). Had to tinker around to get Fi sim working (my Sony H9493 and Nexus 5 with Ubuntu Touch needed zero mods for Fi sim to work) and the Bluetooth stutter may be a deal breaker if I can't straighten it out. Also, expect zero customer service and few if any software updates along with a shady reputation... Anyway, just my two cents.

You can't just pop a sim into an unknown unlock phone with Verizon. You gonna have to call CS and beg them to let the device active on Verizon. Good luck with that.
Okay, just found the original OEM for this phone. It's call Centric S1(which strangely MSRP in India for $278 USD)
There are root articles for that phone but they probably will not work due to N1 having July 2019 security patch with Android 9.
