[Q] XT861: Software Update after Radio Unlock: Is this safe to do? - Motorola Droid 3

Hi guys, I'm back again with a noob moment!
So I have this problem with the physical keyboard in my XT861 Milestone 3, it's been radio unlocked so it believes it's the Chinese XT883.
Some people with this phone have said they have problems with the physical keyboard, and some have suggested from google search results that a software upgrade fixed it. Now, I did check to see if there was a software upgrade available, but since this is just using the radio.img and nothing else, I didn't know if using the software update button was a smart idea. It doesn't sound like it. Any ideas on how I can address the problem? Is the update function safe? This phone -was- pretty badly beat up, it stands to reason things may have shifted internally, the lights on the smart buttons on the glass look like they're not centered right, and the key presses sometimes don't register and sometimes double-register. I just figured I'd approach the problem from software first since others reported similar.
Admittedly, the time without a solid useful keyboard has gotten me used to Swype (which doesn't like working after the radio update, so I basically used root uninstaller, got rid of the on-board swype, and installed a new one which works fine) but I would rather use my keyboard.

1. update will probably fail if you edited the build.prop and/or removed any stock apks
2. update will likely change radio back to stock
3. It likely is a XT883 update
4. unlikely that update will help physical keyboard issues.

That's about the sum of what I thought, thanks @sd_shadow!

When I had the Chinese version if I did a system update the whole phone became permanently Chinese! Don't do it you might mess stuff up more

It's not permanent, but could be several steps to get back to way it is now.

[Q] Soft Keys Not Working

This is my second SGS with this problem and I am trying to determine if it is common or if I am just monumentally unlucky.
During normal use the bottom soft keys (menu and back) will become non-functional. One will stay lit and one will go out, but both will cease to work. Everything else on the phone is still responsive, sometimes the keys 'revive' themselves after a short period of time, other times I need to lock the phone to get them back.
I got this phone (a replacement) on the 6th, and this started on the 12th and has been happening more and more often ever since. Has anyone else seen this or have an idea what it may be? Or is this phone is destined to be my 2nd DOA in a month?
Here is a video showing the problem: '
you tube.com/watch?v=1s-wqWsHaIs
That is definitely not normal behaviour.
Exact same problem here; it seems to happen when I'm using the phone quite a bit but when I leave the phone alone for awhile, problem seems to go away then return because I'm using it too much.

FYI: Samsung support told me to return my phone.
It is almost like one of the soft keys gets stuck 'down', because it is the same behavior if you just hold down one of the keys. Mine seems to happen more when bluetooth is on and it comes and goes in spurts; good for an hour, bad for an hour, etc.
ETA: I am sure now that the soft keys are getting 'stuck down'. I have seen it 3 times now where I would press the left soft key and the light on the key will remain out, then after a second or so the quick search screen comes up and the left soft key light is still out.
any solution to this problem? i seem to have a slightly different issue
this just happened to me recently everything was working fine until this morning when i tried to press the menu and back buttons it wouldnt work, although the buttons light up and is registering my actions when i press them the light turns off and let go is lit up again.
could this be a software issue or something conflicting with my lednotification mod?
please reply ^_^
I've got the exact same issue with my soft keys getting stuck too. Just started a couple days ago, phone's less than a month old. I was also told to take my phone in for repairs.
Oh one tech support guy told me that Froyo might fix it... I'm kinda hoping for that, seeing as how this issue isn't exactly 100% reproducible for the warranty service department
I have the same problem its almost like the soft key is being held down, anyone find a fix for this?
Add me to the list
Add another one to the list. I too am experiencing this problem and I'm unfortunately screwed because of it. I attempted to return the phone, however the store in question refused to accept it because they tested it and found it had been unlocked. Two week old phone on stock FW bought outright ($600) and they won't replace it.
Unbelievable!

Lock it back and go again.
I know this post it's a bit old, but i was harvesting the web looking for an answer to my problem that seems to be the same posted here.
I have a i9000T with eclair 2.1 and soft keys get stuck now and then. I couldn't find a way to reproduce this behaviour.
Recently (yesterday) i flashed a new 2.3.3 firmware hoping this curse to end. The problem seems to persist, but in some situations that i asume for a bad flashing (i didn't repartition neither wipe the phone before flash).
Anyway, can anybody tellme if this is a software or hardware issue? I'll have to return my phone or this is going to be 'fixed' with a nice flash?
Thanks.

Only one way to find out mate.
You need to flash a 2.1 rom that consists of 3 files. 512 pit and re-partition.
Should get you back on track again.
I did flash it again with the 2.3.3 JVH, a few moments ago. Also did a repartition and wipe data and cache. It seems nice, but in a few minutes the same happend. Now, when i press the menu button it takes a nice screenshot of the phone. xD
I need to flash to a 2.1 version? Why is this? I thought flashing with any rom will work.
Thanks.
Solution to this problem!
Hey all - I found a solution to this problem - I can confirm this has fixed the problem on TWO phones for me - read the whole thread as this fix doesn't like custom firmwares, but works fine with all the regular FWs I've downloaded.
Works perfect - and simple fix!

Too bad i didn't see this before
I have I9000T used this 2663 method and now my soft buttons doesn't work anymore...
Didn't find a clear solution in the forums so i want to ask, like i said my phone is a I9000T with official 2.2.1 (UBPJA) rooted using SuperOneClick and unlocked editing the nv_data.bin file.
I was thinking on doing a hard reset to get back to the factory defaults but i see many ways of doing it that it gets confusing... i see peolple doing it through the privacy menu but i think that only erase data and doesn't restore anything OS wise, also see other people doing it using volume + home + power and selecting later clear storage, i think this is the same that the option in the privacy menu, and finally i see some people typing this code *2767*3855# what is the proper way to get back to the original OS in my case?
Thanks in advance...

[Q] [XT860] Key Repeats when typing

I was wondering if anybody else is having the same issue.
Sometimes when I"m typing quickly on my droid (and sometimes when I'm not typing so fast) the key seems to repeat. The concequences can range from annoying to downright haphazard (I have wiped entire draft messages because of this bug). Is this a hardware problem or a software problem? I've had this issue since day one and don't really want to have to restore my phone since there are a lot of customized settings on there and it would take a while to reconfigure everything.

are you talkin about when using the physical keyboard? if so, i have been having same problem. since day 1 like you said
EDIT: i have the 862
Did you install the update? This bug was fixed with the update on D3.
I had the same issue, since going to the OTA I haven't been experiencing many issues, my alt key and shift key tend to act a little odd sometimes now though, but far less annoying than continuous chars repeating...
I've also been running Steel Droid since I went to the OTA, sooooooo
Im not sure if it was fixed through the update or SD. Gonna assume OTA though.

The XT860 doesn't have an update yet
I figured I was in the same boat as many other people, but thanks for letting me know that eventually this bug will get fixed.
I contacted Motorola and they played dumb about it, but really I didn't want to have to wipe my device just to find the same problems happening over and over again.
Yes I was referring to the physical keyboard.
Thanks for all the responses!
same here
I'm having the same problem on my XT862. Before the OTA update, I had problems with the spacebar and period key sticking and doing things like this............................................................ until i hit another key to stop it.
I have the latest OTA now, and immediately after the update, the problem stopped for a few days, but now i'm having issues again. Mostly the spacebar and the "L" key tend to not recognize when i press them.
Same problem here, using XT860, but for me it doesn't seem to be specific to any key... meaning any key will just repeat itself for unknown reason.
Is anybody able to replicate the problem at will ?
Before my update, I did notice if I used a different area of say my space bar or backspace or period keys, I could prevent it from happening... and using the edges seemed to cause it to "stick" more consistantly... but that COULD have been all in my head... just a perception observation so unless confirmed by others, assume im just looney just figured id give as much information as I've gathered as I could!

i use the xt860 and haven't had that sort of problem.. i guess i got real lucky..
I have this issue too on my bell xt860. I thought it was a problem with the phone!
I thought the keyboard was sticking, but if you hold the button down, it doesnt repeat, it gives you different character settings. Has there been anyword on when this update will be coming down the pipe? Is it fixed with a custom rom?

browser incorrectly loads images, pixelated and/or broken

Okay,
so I have had the Motorola XT860 for about 2 months, maybe more. The other day the images on m.Facebook.com became broken, thought it was the site, so I ignored it. Than seen the same thing happen to a few other sites and realized it was a browser issue. No worries, so I downloaded a few other browsers; the dolphin HD one - same thing happened on it..So I tried Firefox/Opera/a few others and they weren't loading the same mobile version as the one for android pops up. Became frustrated than took out the battery to find out it didn't help.
So I became frustrated and start researching it(and found out NO one was having this same issue?!).. so after much debate I restarted (wiped) my device, loaded it from scratch to find out the same friggen issue is happening. My moto is stock, no rooting(yet); butt don't have a computer til Saturday. So how can I fix this issue now? How do I reload the browser? my phone is working fine.. just not the browser.
PS: so it seems like transparent images(PNG?) are not loading correctly.. it either shows the image with a black background or the image shows transparent while the background is greyed out. Its hard to explain but, I really need to fix this. If this can't be fixed I'll just swap it out for the galaxy nexus...cause this is beyond annoying..
I have a wiped phone with NO saved contacts, msgs, or apps! what's up with that???
Is the broken image thing related to flash content? How is your youtube in-browser player working?
This sounds very similar to the problem I was having with my first XT860. I had some hard time with Motorola but finally they fixed it (I got replacement phone).
Here are pics from mine to compare:
image1: http://i39.tinypic.com/2vcj8ds.jpg
image2: http://i41.tinypic.com/iypxxw.jpg
first image is http://www.speedtest.net/mini.php - the flash 9 applet to perform speed test and second image is in-browser youtube player. See how controls are garbled, some content like banners/etc on the video is garbled too.
If yours does the same - go have it exchanged (mine took 3 times sending in before they actually recognized there is a problem)
Try going to the market, menu>my apps and scroll down untilyou find the flash player. Select it and see if there is an update. I had an issue with videos in the browser looking kinda like that. For some reason it notify me there was an update. 11.0.1.153 is the current version

Problem appeared right after hard reset with pre-installed Adobe flash. Updating it to 11 actually made the effect worse - instead random color scrambled dots and lines I was getting black boxes.
Motorola repair centre initially didn't see the problem as it was prominent only on flash content, but after I wrote a detailed explanation what the problem is, they sent me a new phone.

Nope still here, having a rough time. How do I do a *clean* install? I wiped the phone 3 times over and its still ****ty. This is a cross browser issue, dolphin HD and the stock android browser had the same issue, same goes for other browsers like opera, Firefox, etc but not AS visible..but still there. So how do I wipe this phone from scratch? The whole phone seems sluggish now and the keyboard all of a sudden is causing typos, or if I hit backspace it'll keep removing everything all of a sudden. I don't know what's happening or why, but for Motorola - if this isn't fixed I'm going to the 4.5" amoled plus Samsung galaxy s2.. this is just stupid and a waste of my time.
So what is the easiest and fastest way to do a real "fresh" install..I'm a noob when it comes to androids..BB is a different story..

Since the xt860 has no sbf you can't really do a fresh install afaik. The keyboard thing is a common issue, it was fixed on D3's with the 5.6.890 update. I have the same problem with "m" "b" and the spacebar. I would say get a replacement

Install from scratch is done with the full SBFs, that afaik are not available yet.
BTW an install with a service sbf followed by a wipe should be equivalent.

BTW have you tried to do a full wipe (from the privacy menu ?)
Since there is no SBF, you've got no much choice. Contact Motorola support or a Bell support if you are with them and have the phone serviced. They will likely give you a new phone.

Sbf stands for software backup file or something similar. Google is your friend
I'm by no means an expert but this is how I understand it
Sbf is basically a copy of the phones original firmware. Resets your phone to out of the box new. A factory reset doesn't actually wipe all the partitions, just the ones you as a end user are able to modify(unrooted of course). If there's a problem with a root level file factory reset won't fix it.
If I got any part of that wrong anyone feel free to correct me

Which is why messing around as a root user without an sbf is risky

I noticed after taking my phone out of my pocket while trying to turn it on from normal off screen while on that it wouldn't show up the light still indicated it was working I can even turn off the phone.
Taking the battery out and back in semi fixed this but only to the extent where when the phone is turned on the moto logo doesn't appear but the droid eye does.
whence at the booted screen if I were to let it go black it has a chance to not stay on unless I RIGHT after it boots unlock it and keep it lit,
(but)
the main problem I noticed was it really only did this after lets say I was typing or doing anything with the qwerty board open and perhaps I let the screen turn off after a minute,
when I try to wake it up it stays black. EVERY TIME like most of the time,
it has to do with the keyboard being open when the screen goes to sleep.
WHAT IS WRONG *pulls hair out*

I have been told this sounded like a software issue so all I'd need to do is re install like I did when flashing back to stock THIS MORNING.

Edit:
Ok so far since no one has said anything I have also reinstalled my old newest state, still giving me crap.
Then just did the newest update 5.7 blah and still it's happening.
I hypothesize it might be the flex ribbon cable maybe (but it really might not) I read from another phone it might be a capacitor but it might not.
Whatever is wrong the phone still is able to at times now 40/60% of the time work properly and wake normal but then again not.

since you can't restore the apn's with 3rd party I now have this NEW issue.
the phone goes unresponsive within cdma workshop and ##Program does not work.
I'd like some help in finding out now how to if it is possible yet to properly flash to cricket and or just change my apns and get into cdma as well as QPST.

Yeah, it does sound like a hardware problem. If nobody else can help you fix it, you'll need to reflash the latest OTA update (or revert to your safestrap nandroid), unroot it and restore all the system apps that you may have frozen/deleted, and hope that Verizon will replace it.
Thanks

buttons, lights and others

Hi,
I bought Droid Turbo month ago, I love this Phone but it has few problems. Firstly, the lighting of the reccent apps button is darker than the others, secondly sometimes the home and back buttons are not responsible (I read about this problem in others posts and I think I have this problem because of additional glass I have) and finally I have 6.0.1 with locked bootloader (I know, there is no option to unlock bootloader... Maybe someday somebody Will Find a solution. I Wonder if is it posibble to get lolipop with Verizon app to unbrickin phone, you know what I mean).
How to solve this first two problems? Is it cause by ROM, Android? I cant use guarantee for sth like that because it isnt a big problem and I dont live in USA and bought my phone far away from my country).
PS. Sorry for my English :/
Anybody know sth?

I own three of the Quarks (all of them the 64GB Moto XT1225, the "international" version of the Droid Turbo XT1254). All my capacitive buttons are the same brightness. Something is wrong with your third "recent apps" button.
Two of my phones are being used daily by myself and my wife, and have custom Marshmallow ROMs. The third is still "new" in the box and still has stock Kitkat with locked bootloader. The first two have always had the same buttons brightness, even before I installed custom ROMs. The one in the box I turned on when I got it, just to make sure it worked -- but I would have noticed if the capacitive buttons were wonky.
Also, all three phones have very responsive back buttons. Yes, your poor responsiveness is probably your screen protector interfering?
So, are you thinking my Phone is broken? It is not problem of androida somehow?
Well, on the left is my "new in box" never set up XT1225 with stock Kitkat, bootloader still locked (still has the factory screen protector). On the right is my wife's XT1225 with custom ROM RR 6.x. I'm taking the picture with my own XT1225.
See, the capacitive buttons? The brightness is fine and the same on all three buttons (home, back, recents), as wells as the responsiveness on both these phones and on the Moto XT1225 phone (my daily phone) I took the picture with.
So, something is wrong with your hardware, at least as far as brightness of the capacitive buttons. For the responsiveness, try taking off your screen protector.
I checked it, poor responsivnes is because of screen protection.
What if I told that I think all 3 buttons had the same brightness when I first started this phone? I disabled maybe 15 apps, is it possible that this made problem with brightness?

What kind of apps did you disable?
Yes, it's possible. I'm not going to say "probable", but "possible". Here's why...
This guy in this thread below has a rooted XT1225, but on stock ROM. He didn't like his capacitive buttons having any backlighting. So, he found a way to turn them off by editing something. Someone else in the thread said they use Gravity Box to do that. So, those values can be changed, either manually or by apps -- and perhaps changed disparately/unevenly?

I know you have a locked bootloader and are not rooted, but it's POSSIBLE some app that regulates auto-brightness or something also regulates the brightness (backlighting) of the capacitive buttons? Speaking of which, try turning on and off your autobrightness, see if that does anything.
If that doesn't work, you can always re-flash your Marshmallow firmware, and re-set everything back to "factory" settings. That may solve your problem.

Apps like verizon one, Amazon etc.
What do you mean reflash? By ADB? Not factory reset?

Yeah, by ADB or RSD Lite. If you do a factory reset, while that sounds good, I'm not sure it re-sets something like this. Whereas if you overwrite your values with the 6.0.1 factory firmware it will definitely re-set.
Then if you still have a problem, it's a hardware issue, not firmware or software.
You can try factory re-set first, but unless that fixes the problem then you are going to want to re-flash the 6.0.1 factory firmware just to make sure.
So, I think I flashed it well via RSD, phone automaticaly boot into my home screen (looks the same) and problem with this button is still there...
Am I done everything right?

When you flashed it, and it booted for the first time, did you have to enter everything again? Was it like getting a new phone? All your settings were wiped out?
No... It is weird for me. I think it would wipe everything but I have all the same what I have before

OK, then try factory re-set, then flash the image?
After that, I don't have any other ideas.
Ok, so I did it with adb also and it doesn't change anything, my recent apps button is still without lighting. I have to accept this little issue.
Thank you very much for your help
ps. maybe on other system someday it will work xd
Oh I remember the fact with my Nexus 4, one day the turn on/off button stop working, I was thinking about replacment of this button but with update on custom rom everything started to work fine, so I have still hope
