Kudos to ASUS for producing such a robust product.
Last October (Halloween to be exact) my family and I went the local Science Center (my son's favorite destination) for the kid's Halloween party. I of course brought my N7 to stay occupied while he soaked up SCIENCE & FUN...
After a long day, we head home stopping for dinner. As I go to load my son into the car after dinner, I put my N7 on the roof....
As we travelled up the interstate we heard a weird whistling noise that lasted for 10 minutes or so before "going away"....
At home I realized what must have happened....:crying:
Flash forward to last week...I get a call.
The guy  on the other end asks "did you lose a tablet?" YES!....Holy Cow...you can't be serious....
Seems he plugged it in and a little while later it was able to boot to the lock screen where I had my contact info....
We set a time to meet and I got my N7 back. :highfive:
I plugged it in and what do you know, it seems to be fine.
N7 (no sleeve, no nothing) in a zippered 2-up CD case I had lying around...survived flying off the top a car at 70mph....almost 6 months outdoors....IOWA winter....sub-zero temps...snow....ice....rain...
Only damage: 1" piece of the silver trim on the bottom right corner is broken... WOW!
That's crazy man lol

Pretty sure it's the latter. How it didn't get wet I'm surprised at, I wonder if they've had the tablet sitting around for a while and just now tried to power it up or something.

Wet...I don't know... inside the zippered case was damp for sure as the ink bled on the couple of pages of paper I had kept with the N7.
You were Super Lucky.. Dealing with asus is NO FUN
I think you were just very lucky. There were including myself many thousands of people have major issues with the screen cracking and breaking on the nexus 7 when it came out.. The first one i bought. Came in the mail after waiting and waiting took it out of the box and the screen was not secure on the device. I held it in my hand and the screen crushed under my thumb. It took months to get my money back. at that time they were NOT Doing exchanges .
anyway Just my two pennies be careful next time your not likely to be so lucky. Mine is kept in a BOB J Gear case . i have seen all over about the same issue with the nexus 4 phones
Thanks for your story....

that's awesome, nice to know it.
i wonder if 2013 version can do same things. honestly, i don't want to test my device in such way )
That is incredibly lucky.
Unfortunately mine fell off the sofa from less than 3 feet high on it's side and the screen cracked to such an extent that it no longer responded to touches.
That's luck nothing to do with build quality haha the original Nexus 7 didn't have too much of a great build quality especially with the screen coming out on some devices.

Yeah the Nexus 7 was a good device if you didn't have to RMA. But apart from the screen being faulty, there was a bad EMMC which cause slow crawl speeds on the tablet until 4.3 implemented FSTRIM automatically at a certain battery threshold. I just ran it via script and I didn't have any problems none the less.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I must have been extremely lucky too in that I never had any of the problems others seem to have had with the 2012 N7...
Needless to say I have been babying it since I got it back
I guess that really demonstrates the usefulness of a decent case for it.
Any device that falls you have a 50/50 chance of the screen cracking. I know my old thunderbolt I dropped it many times and the screen didn't crack. Then that one day it fell just right and the screen shattered. Maybe one day they can make a screen that's shatterproof but if they did we wouldn't buy new replacement devices lol. I wouldn't say I am very careful with my tablet but I have dropped it a few times and so far it hasn't cracked yet.

My 3rd replacement should be here in a day or 2, my original device and previous 2 replacements all had screen lift right out of the box.

Wow, hopefully the next one won't have the lifted display. However, if it has a dead pixel I'd call it a day and settle with it and hope nothing else crops up. I've learned with these products that you will NEVER get a "perfect unit" just one that's "good enough". Then again, with the defects like dead touchscreen spots and lifted displays these are clearly manufacturing and part issues that should be fixed.
Good luck.
I really wanted to buy one of these tablets, but hearing stories like yours is keeping me from moving forward. I'm continuing to monitor these forums to see if it improves, however, I'm losing faith and considering getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch tablet instead. I hope you get a functional one soon. Don't lose too much faith in the Nexus 7. It's not unusual for new products to have hardware issues on the first batch. Look at Apple's track record, I bought a launch date Intel Macbook Pro expecting a solid device. However, I was greeted with a machine that was riddled with issues. I say buy a Nexus 7 now from a retailer nearby if you can. That way if you do end up with a flawed device you can always return it to them within their return period. I've had mine since early last month and have no issues with mine.
I'm onto my third coming tomorrow. if this doesn't work out I will refund it and get the yes wait for it - iPad Mini! Hate on!
I got my third today and it's the worst one so far. I probably need to sleep on it before deciding what to do next. I'm not too happy with Google or ASUS right now though.
That's really unfortunate man. I'd say keep on trying, but thats easy for me to say. Ive been lucky enough to get a good unit n the first go round.

If this were just any old Android tablet, I'd agree. I did the same with the Transformer Prime--too many issues, too many replacements, and I finally gave up and got a refund directly from ASUS.
However, this is the only Nexus tablet, i.e., the only one that will get immediate updates directly from Google. That's worth its weight in gold. It's also going to be a great development device for people who are into that sort of thing.
It's a pain in the **** to go through all these gyrations to get a decent unit, but in this case I think it makes more sense than it would otherwise.
After reading all these replies, it honestly makes me feel bad that mine was near perfect on delivery.
The only problem I had was that there were too little scratches on the outer rim.

Really, any problems are small-fry. I have 2 units, and 2 have gone to relatives, and they are all perfect. Mine was a UK pre-order, the others shortly after launch,
Mine has a really slight screen lift, but you would have to look real close, and it really doesn't bother me, it's a high spec entry level device.
This is how Asus operates. If you enjoy the Prime despite its Asus inspired defects, keep it and enjoy it. If you insist on a well built device, wait for a non Asus Nexus tablet.

Could be the mold on the bezel if looking at the device from the top down.
But my replacement has two marks on the bezel as well. Looking at the screen, left side. About 3/4" from top, and bottom.
To me, it looks like they've taken it back apart to correct the screen lift issue.
I am on my first Device and have no problems with it.
Guess its just luck at the moment.
So today I am just chillin, and pull out my phone from my pocket and I didnt really grip it hard and just falls from my hands... I swear when it dropped it felt that it was falling in slow motion. And out of all the places it could fall, it falls at an angle and then on the screen.
I picked it up and I see the top of the screen has a crack from one side to the other, and another crack on the bottom right corner. And it gets worse, when I turned on the screen the touch doesnt work at all so basically my whole screen is messed up.
Found a website that sells the screen already glued with the frame and a battery so all its missing is the motherboard and internal stuff.
Buttt its $170 so yea gotta wait till next week when I get payed.
I would post pics but dont have 10 posts so yea, it really sucks I've had the phone for about a month and I always protected it. :crying::crying::crying:

Asking them to give you a price and time estimate cannot hurt. Additionally, the limiting step of production is more likely everything that goes on that motherboard, not the touch screen.

LG will not give you a quote. They will only say, "We cannot give you a quote without you sending it in. Please send the phone in to us, with you being responsible for shipping, and then once we've had a chance to look at it, we will let you know the cost of the repair."
Even after I pushed saying how about the front lcd and digitizer, they still wouldn't give me an estimate.
Sam Thing happened to me.. just 1 crack but half the touchscreen doesnt work.. i've seen plenty of ppl with cracked iphones whose touch still works.. called lg and they told me the same thing. Don't know if its worth wasting money on shipping just to find out they charge more for repair.. kind of a risk. Did you ever end up getting it fixed?

That really sucks... Something about these new phones, in particular the ones with the new touch sensor in glass or whatever they call it. The touch response is gone on a crack. I recall my first Droid had two cracks across the entire face and it worked flawlessly... I think I'd rather have that 1mm gap in the display/glass then have to replace it due to a simple crack.

The likely hood (unless you have a defective nexus 7) is that you will get a new device before the nexus 7 stops working well.
I personally think this device is well built enough to easily last 5+ years, maybe even 10. I can't see why not if it's treated well.

I have never known any electrical appliance that has never had any units that have had faults, it's impossible. Truth it it's luck of the draw with any manufacturer but it's usually the minority (and in this case it is). My friend bought the same TV as me at the same time, his died within 6 months (and he got a replacement under warranty), mine's still going strong after 3 years. Providing you haven't got "a bad one" there's no reason it can't go 5 years plus, my (built myself) PC is 5 years old and it's been overclocked to death since the day it was built - that's still going strong!
Depends on the unit. Some will go bad within 30 days, some will go bad within a year.
Unless there is a design flaw, most faults with electronics tend to happen early on in my experience (ie. few weeks to a month)
Seeing as Asus does release most tablets with some design flaws (off the top of my head TF201 with wifi/gps issues, and the Nexus 7 screen lift)
I've seen about 6-7 Nexus 7s so far with screen lift, all in the same spot and about the same amount. So the longevity would be based on whether that design flaw is cosmetic, or could effect the screens durability.
IMO, it WILL affect the screen down the road and lead to a weakened screen with your screen eventually cracking.
(Anyone who says they don't have screen lift, either it hasn't developed yet or are extremely lucky)

It's my opinion unless Asus has fixed the speaker problem, ANY Nexus 7's speakers will eventually 'blow out' and rattle incessantly. My left speaker has done it three times and my right speaker once, and I don't play movies, loud games, etc.. It's apparently done it from notifications every time.
They pop back down, but it'll just happen again. As for the rest, the battery will wear out at some point, depending upon how well you treat it, most likely it would carry a reasonable amount of charge for 3-4 years. If you heavily discharge and recharge it every day, less time.. Hot environment, less time, etc...
Screen bleed I've never heard of except for screen detects in manufacturing, never heard of it happening while in use.

The main one that I'm worried about is the speakers. I don't use them for music but for games and notifications and that. :-/

As popular as this device has become I can see it being around for a few years with no problems. I'm sure any parts that may end up being common replacement parts will start popping up for cheap on amazon. My speakers are working great, and I use them extensively for games, movies, and YouTube. I see no reason they shouldn't last a few years themselves, but if for some reason they don't there's always headphones/portable speakers.
I'm very happy with my little tablet and full intend on using it for a good 2-3 years, longevity is part of the reason I got it. Once my Toshiba laptop died (HDD failure), after a year and a half of usage, I replaced it with a more modern Asus. Wouldn't you know the Asus suffered HDD failure after a year, right out of warranty. This time since my laptop is still running up to date hardware I chose to fix, ended up costing $250 after ordering recovery discs, 500GB HDD, and 8 gigs of RAM ( which I didn't need after all, the guy testing my laptop was an idiot). So I decided to use my 7 for everyday light duty in the hopes I'll actually be able to get a few years out of my laptop this time around.

A device will last as long as you take care of it.
Be careful with it, act as its a very prized possession (I know mine is)
Cases are your friend,(high quality ones at least) and will give your device a longer life(usually)

I have the 32GB wifi model
When it first arrive, its perfect, but after playing some intense 3D games... I notice my screen lifted... 0.1mm
I think its because of the heat it generates when gaming...
Now, I only use N7 for reading and some light gaming.
*Using cases that has a lock on cover, so when you close the cover after every use, especially gaming, the cover will apply pressure to the screen.
Its will stop the screen lift from going worse.

Amazon is much cheaper, I just post this link, as its from their official store.
Got my 16GB model in September last year and the screen cracked taking the digitizer with it last week. No, I didn't drop it, yes it was in a leather case. I've looked after it but the screen just shattered. Asus Warranty doesn't cover the screen apparently so the durability on mine was laughable. I won't be buying another.

Simple physics guys..
Glass will shatter if it hits the ground hard. Don´t forget you don´t own a simple phone anymore like a Nokia 3310 Your smartphones are actually very sensitive mini computers.
Gorilla Glass may prevent the glass from becoming scratched very easy, it will never prevent it from breaking though.
This is hard to read. I have an S2 that's I've dropped many times from hip level, no case, and the screen has yet to crack.
I definitely bought a case for this one because no matter how careful I am I can't keep my phone from dropping.

samsung continues to pay good, huh op? "screen being easily damaged" sounds very legit; when i broke my phone screen the first idea is write "easily damaged" (note the "easily", lol) on one of the most famous developers forum where i registered with 0 post. Yeah, good try.

My point was that the S2 has a gorilla glass and it took many falls without cracking. T barely has any scratches after 2 years too.

Now random cracking is an issue, but even 2 inch toughened (laminated) glass will break if it hits the ground along its edges/corners because the stress distribution is concentrated there.

I obviously agree with your first statement but why do people always have to bring up the iPhone to compare things to. How about an HTC One, or a Samsung Galaxy S4 or an LG G2? People think if an iPhone does something then we can just accept it. I would expect an iPhone to break. It is built by underage kids and is known to get damaged easily regardless of what Apple tells us.

Budddy, Gorilla Glass doesn't make your phone shatter-proof, it's just protecting your phone against scratches.
Sorry to hear that dude.

The only reason I brought up the iPhone is due to the "popular opinion" that it has the best build quality.. Not that it's my opinion though

I find it really disrespectful when people talk down on people that drop their phones and say they should be more careful.
The reality is we are all human! human's make mistakes! Some make less than others, but we all make mistakes. If you have never tripped, said the wrong thing, accidentally dropped something, well then congratulations you are a perfect person! But no need to put down others.
that was fast
24 hours, slipped out my hand when bent to tie my show, 2 feet off the ground it landed flat on the ground. Shattered.
I want to blame myself but this wasn't an epic slip, I guess there's a magic spot you dont want to hit if this thing falls but if its that easy I think alot of people are going to be doing the same.
Maybe someone at support is having a good day, doubtful. I can;t buy another one tho if it breaks so easily. I've never actually cracked a screen before.
it looks like a tall iphone now

I'll just stop you there. It's a smartphone. Without a case, if dropped, it will break. Period. I'm sorry for your situation but this is why cases are so widely used.

i have dropped my GS3 face down while riding a bicycle and it's fine. Then probably 20 times in a similar instance to just now all i have on that are some some scraches.
Trying to get in touch with LG see what they charge for screen replacement, a post on the LG G2 forum says $105 plys shipping.

If that's accurate that isn't too bad! I know when I cracked my Galaxy Nexus screen last year I just called Google and they sent me a new phone, charged me the full price of the phone, then when I returned my broken one they refunded all but $100. It was a damn good deal in my opinion. You might want to give that a try instead of dealing with LG.
No one to blame but yourself. That sucks though.

Ive only dropped one phone in my life time, htc one x, and the first fall equaled shattered screen =(
I have done the same to gs3, nexus 4, HTC one (yes I am clumsy) they are all as brittle as each other. I just make sure I have insurance!

Ouch. I cracked my Nexus 4 screen 3 times. Sent it o LG every time lol. The last time I sent it, they actually just fixed it for me for free, which was really nice of them.
Anyways, if it really no a $105, this isn't bad. It was around $150 to fix the N4 each time I cracked. The digitizer was literally right on the glass in the Nexus 4, so even the smallest chip could render the entire screen unusable. As was what happened to me.
Nexus 5 has Gorilla Glass 3. I really hope that makes a difference.

Gorilla glass prevents scratching, not cracking.

I usually run totally naked. I love the feel it. With anything on it just seems as if it is not necessary.
On that note, i have never dropped my phone.

I got google Nexus support on the phone and went the "come on do me a solid bro" route. The guy at google put me on the phone so I guess he asked someone, but he said he couldn't do anything. I'm on with LG now to find out the price. Maybe try google later and will get lucky.
LG says $40 - $100 depending on extent of damage. LG tech said the digitizer is attached to the screen and very hard to separate. But total turnaround time is 5-7 business days, from time they receive the phone, evaluate repair charges, confirm cost with me and do the work. That's impressive. I could probs sell the thing broken to some of the impatient fanboy nut jobs out there.
Had the nexus 4 for almost a year and dropped it a dozen times from various heights (even shoulder height, and 6' tall) and not crack. Then two weeks ago it fell off my chair about one foot and cracked the bottom of my screen and rendered part of it unresponsive. So it just depends on how it falls. It could fall a hundred times or just once.

picture?
Oof, that's too bad! I'm trying very hard to baby mine so far, will be ordering a tempered glass screen protector and a case some time this week. I think the glass screen protector will be enough to prevent a cracked actual screen, so the case is just for situations where I'd want some extra protection (say, hiking, or going to a state fair, etc.). I used a tempered glass screen protector on my Galaxy Nexus for a long time, and it saved my actual screen twice (screen protector cracks, real screen underneath was fine). Best $30 I will ever spend on phone accessories.
Pic or it didn't happen.
I shattered the screen of an iPhone 4S that I dropped down a flight of stairs (on accident?) and ran over an EVO 4G with my car when it slipped out of my pocket getting in. In both incidents neither phone was in a case, and in both I absolutely was to blame. You stay calm and carry on, as the kids say.

You can tell his screen is cracked because his shift key doesn't work anymore.
The plastic they used on Nexus 5 is very very soft. I mean the bezel cannot provide any protection to the screen when it falls on the sides.
