Hi all, I have an i9000 with a broken screen and digitiser. I need to recover the data from it (pictures mainly). There is no display at all but the phone is working otherwise - I can hear it booting up and I can put it into Download and Recovery modes.
Unfortunately it's running the stock firmware so I can't use Recovery Mode to mount USB storage. When turned on normally, it will connect to my PC but obviously I can't press the button to mount storage (why doesn't it mount automatically???).
Does anyone have any ideas? I am considering flashing a new kernel to get CWM Recovery and possibly blindly mount USB storage. But I don't know the current stock firmware so I'm unsure which version of Semaphore/CF-root to flash...
Is there any other way? Other than buying another i9000 with a working LCD/digitiser which would be too expensive.

Thanks for that. Is it definitely possible to flash it without interaction on the phone? I've flashed with Odin before but it's been a while.
If I did flash it successfully, do you know which version of CWM would it use? I need to know the exact order of options in the CWM Recovery so I could blind mount the USB storage...

Annoyingly I think it's disabled - I have tried using adb but it doesn't show up under devices. It's my sister's phone which is why it's not rooted (or backed up!) etc.

Okay! After flashing the kernel I asked you to and getting into recovery mode, click the volume down button 5 times and then, enter it and click again.
NOTE: The Backup will take at max half an hour. So, I suggest you leave it on charging whilst it backs up and take a look at it after 1 hour

Thanks so much! Just to clarify - scrolling down 5 times and pressing enter twice mounts the USB storage? Then I can access the internal SD card and back up the contents using my PC?
Also for the flashing process - I put the phone in Download mode, connect it to PC and flash using Odin, selecting the 2.7.4 tar as PDA? Then disconnect phone and remove battery, then boot into CWM?
Also another issue I'm worried about is the current firmware on the phone, because apparently Semaphore 2.7.4 won't work on pre-JW4 firmwares. Is there any way to check the current firmware using Odin or something?

Scrolling down 5 times and clicking twice runs the backup. You don't need to mount USB Storage! As for the flashing process you're right and it will work as long as you have the USB Drivers installed!
And yeah, the thanks button is right there (where ever it is).

Oh OK, where does the backup go? I'm not using a MicroSD at the moment. I think it would be best for me just to mount the USB storage so I can retrieve the photos etc to my PC. I don't need a full backup, I just need to transfer the important files to my PC.

The Backup is mostly stored in the Internal SD Card. Regarding the flashing thing, Even if you flash a KK Kernel, it would boot to Recovery, but not to system.

Well guys....i think this problem stems from me prematurely removing the usb cord. I Understand that. But here is the other couple of predicaments. lol Ok i'm on ICS Stunna 4.3 ......well after something went wrong i'm unable to "repair" my internal storage. Everything still works smooth....but i can't add things to my internal card. Every time i hook up to the computer it says it needs to scan and fix the card.Well the problem is starts to fix it.....but never does....progress bar never finishes. Tried this on 3 different computers. Nothing. So try to install a different rom....i have some on my internal and external. Always aborts in cmw....never finishes. So on top of all this Stunna has started acting odd. Likely read errors.....but problem is i can't switch roms! lol I have tried everything. I was wondering should i format both cards? But if i do that how can i back everything up if i can't access my card? Any help would be appreciated guys. Hoping i don't have to Odin back to stock.
Cliffs- Internal storage won't repair on any computer-Can't install anything in CMW because of it
I have the exact same problem now, as you do. CWM can't install any .zip files, I can't flash Abyss kernel, so it's just stuck in that end.
I installed ICS Stunner 4.5 coming from GB with full wipe. This happened to me after I tried to copy some files over to external SD Card and it failed, seemed like the phone froze (SOD), so I figured flashing another modem would do the trick (read it in ICS Stunner thread's 1st post). Tried to transfer the file over a cable, but same thing happened. After rebooting I just grabbed it from dropbox and installed the modem successfully. I went ahead to try and fix the mounting problem, so I plug in the cable and it offers me to scan and fix both partitions (internal and external). External card finishes successfully, but not the internal one. And after that I'm in the same situation as OP.
Any ideas anyone?
Enable usb debugging(setting-appl-development)
Connect to pc
Select to copy file to fr computer from notification
You will find separate drive letter for int n ext card
Rt click on int sd card letter n format(you can backup imp data to pc b4 this)
Hope it shud b fixed

Gonna try it now. Have lots of pictures to backup first tho
EDIT: Same thing happens as with scan and fix procedure. It starts and just sits there, nothing happens. When I try to stop "USB Storage in use" it just shows the spinner and hangs in there. Only holding the power button helps solve this. My guess is something in the internal SD card partition is broken... just can't say what or how to fix it.

Same problem^^^^ Not sure what to do about all this
Short story:
Formatting didn't work.
Long story:
Okay, so following the idea to format the internal sd card's partition, I achieved it not through Windows format dialog, but through the half-broken CWM. Both my SD Cards were formated (internal and external) in the process. So since I used the external one for backing up important info I had to use [email protected] UNDELETE to get it back (after booting to ICS). In the process the native SD Card mount service seemed like broken, I had to perform a few hard resets. Hangs seemed to occur whenever I tried writing to one of the cards. I downloaded multi-mount SD card app from Play Store and transfered AbyssKernel's .zip and now when I try to install it from CWM it says
Installing: /sdcard/AbyssNotekernel42RedTouchOriginalLogo.zip

I don't know if this will help or not but give it a try.
Enter into the download mode and flash any stock firmware using PC Odin. This way you don't need to access any of the cards. After flashing stock ROM, try fixing the internal SD again and if it still doesn't fix, send in your note to Samsung for repairs.
Sounds too simple to be working though but worth a shot.

Well for now the phone works, but it's stuck on ICS Stunner. I was thinking to use PC Odin or Mobile ODIN, but what if it doesn't work because the partition is corrupted in some way (as it is now, because CWM can't flash anything).

I'm downloading an old GB rom myself..
While I am, I can share a thought: I feel that ICS is not yet ready.. at least not for me. Feels nice and fast but buggy USB transfers is a big no-go for me. Also after trying AOSP derived ROM, I decided to wait for a good Samsung edition ICS because all the little tweaks add a good feeling to the experience, I tend to miss them on AOSP or AOKP or w/e

Yeah. After quite a time of failed attempts we succeeded. ODIN > Stock GB ROM > ROOT + CMW > Anything you like. No re-partitioning was needed in the process
i have same problem but more complicated. iam on stock GB and its happened after flash bad kernel
the case in detail's :
i flashed wrong kernel on my device previously and now when iam trying to flash another kernel even use ODIN or CWM everything going well and completed but when check i found the old kernel still. i tried many times with same results and no error .
- system can read/write/mount the internal memory but the new pasted files deleted after restart. external card behave normal and i can preform flash using files pasted on it.
- in CWM wipe/format/flash operations running well but no effect on device even restarted to CWM only.
- device has yellow triangle. is it effected?
- the devil kernel stacked in machine is 2.6.35.7-gb4846d2 [email protected] #2 and the build no. is jpkj4
system running normal but cannot keep any changes i do if restarted.
-system rooted and no problem with root
-can access adb
- ODIN behave same CWM, operation work but no change.
can anyone help me guys?
i did repartition the memory useing PIT for note butno change also
thank you all in advance
Galaxy note what an update, and now won't even start. Help please!
My Samsung note was updated from gingerbread to ice cream sandwich using Samsung Kies. Then rooted and put on the Franco kernel. That's when the problems started: lag city! It couldn't even play fruit ninja or noogra nuts. Everything was slow. subsequent updates wouldn't work. Every few hours it would remind me, and I would click dismiss.
I've also been using an aftermarket battery. When the battery would get low, screen would activate all pixels and go very bright. At this point I would have to hold down the power button. Anyway, the last time I did this was the last time the phone was on. When I try to start the phone it gets to the Samsung bit after the opening flash intro, and the Samsung just glows and blinks. I've tried many times but it doesn't work. If left in the state, it gets very hot and will Drain the battery very quickly.
I am able to get to the clockwork mod recovery. What shall I do from here? I see there's an option to backup, but how would I restore from and what all my data be there? I have some really important data on the phone that I'm hoping to recover. In fact some of that data is worth several hundred dollars, because it's my proof for my friend who was defrauded by a ticketing agent.
Your help would be really appreciated everyone!
From what I can tell, you haven't wiped so it shouldn't be a emmc brick.
You said you could get to CWM recovery so from there you should first mount your phone to your pc and back up anything important like that "several hundred dollar" info.
Y'know. Just to be safe.
Then download a safe kernel such as Hydracore or Philz and put it on your phone.
Flash it, reboot recovery, then do all 3 wipes and see if that solves your problem.

Thanks again for the reply. When I do that and plug it in, the computer installs the device driver software correctly. However, I can't find the device either in "my computer" or in the device management/hard disk management console. I've tried this on two computers with the same result. The option to eject is in the tray icon (similar to other removable storage), but that's the only place it seems to be visible.

Sounds like you've got corrupted rw permissions on internal storage. It's quite common, but the only way I know how to recover is a reflash with correct wipes.

Well I finally got it repaired. Expanded said it would take two months after I mailed it back to the UK. Got it done locally egger where two places said it was the power chip. The good news is the pics are there there, but the data is gone. Do you all recon there is someway else to get the data. If the pics are there maybe the data still can be recovered?
Also, do you think it is dangerous to use whatever the local place flashed on to it? There are a few Chinese apps on it. System says it Systemis hardcore 5 and android 4.0.3
Thank you guys.
Dear All,
I need some help!
I had a weird issue with my tab over the weekend where it would boot to the upgrading dialog, but would only say application 1 of 1, rather than the usual 50+. This would run for hours, so I decided just to reflash the os again without a clean wipe. I imagine this may have been a bad idea. So, I went into CWM and went to flash again, but the tablet crashed just as it started the flashing process, which was bad enough. However, when I went back into CWM, I remembered Nandroid backup and I hoped I had made one! However, rather than hit recover, I selected store (clicked without thinking), which was the cherry on the top of my day of major you-know-whats.
So, the .zip (I think it is v10.1) appears to be corrupt, so I can't flash my original again.
I can't boot the OS to transfer over a new .zip (10.2 would be nice) as I normally would, as I can't start Android at all.
Putting the files on a FAT-formatted USB key isn't recognised by CWM. Trying to mount usb storage gave an error regarding lun path.
So, my questions are:
1) Is there a way to transfer an image onto the internal storage of my tab via CWM, or get it to recognise the USB storage?
2) What are my other options, if 1) isn't possible.
3) If 2) is answered in the negative, have I just made myself a fancy coaster and a good excuse to get a LG G-Pad?
Thanks for your help!

Hi upconvert,
Thanks for the suggestion.
I can get to download mode and I did try to flash a stock ROM from a hotfiles link provided elsewhere on this site last night. However, at NAND Write Start I get three errors on my tablet: WritePartition, DownloadPartition_odin, and Tegra_Nand_Write. I'm not sure what they mean (google didn't reveal any added info). I'm assuming it means the flash storage is either write-protected or can't be found?
I'm going to try and download the ROM again in case it was corrupted somehow. I will retry in the meantime but after I've wiped it again. Any other suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks
Ok, I was able to wipe /data, but it seems to be hanging when trying to wipe /cache. I'd expect it to be finishing in a few seconds, but this is going for minutes.

I'm going to try and download the ROM again in case it was corrupted somehow. I will retry in the meantime but after I've wiped it again. Any other suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks

So, I've not been able to get anywhere with this. I also can't download a new odin tarball after what happened to hotfile. Anyone got any suggestions as to why the nand write errors are happening? Has the storage drive actually died on the tablet?

Ok, I was able to wipe /data, but it seems to be hanging when trying to wipe /cache. I'd expect it to be finishing in a few seconds, but this is going for minutes.

Have you tried to format your sdcard from CWM?, cuz formatting it might let the nand write errors disappear
I didn't follow everything you said so I don't know if you've tried the adb files push through USB or not
so if computer can recognise your device through adb try this METHOD
Oh and by the way, SAMMobile website has a new mirror website, so now you can download Odin tar files again
Directly Here is the latest FW for P7300 , and if you're more comfortable with dev-host mirror than Here you go (the two files are the same latest release)
and Here is the the latest FW for P7310, I don't have any other mirrors for that
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I can't even get access to CWM anymore. Goes straight to Odin download mode after the Samsung splash screen. Unfortunately, I found another post on XDA that seems to explain my problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1532636&page=3
I think the HDD has died completely, as I am getting exactly what that chap was getting. I can't install a PIT file. I couldn't access my sdcard from CWM previously either. Sounds like tablet is a goner. Will post to Samsung and see what they say.
Thanks for your time.

Tab repaired by Samsung
Ok, eventually sent my tab off to Samsung for warranty repair. Received it back and working fine now. Not sure what they did in the end, but got my tab back at least. Thanks for everyone's help.

So I think I may have hard (or Soft) bricked my HTC one, I recently installed faux123's sense kernel: m7-faux123-GE444-016u and was experiencing several crashes and problems so I re flashed the elementalx kernel (A past WORKING configuration) following all the same steps I normally do when installing a new kernel (clearing cache and my devlick [Not sure how to spell it])
After re flashing I was experiencing boot issues where my phone wouldn't make it past the "HTC" Splash screen, so I tried several times re flashing ElementalX with different settings, after several tries i decided to restore from a recently made backup of my ROM, which gave me the same results as installing the ElementalX kernel... no ability to boot. Then out of frustration I decided to reformat my entire /sdcard thinking I could re flash my roms and kernels via usb and my laptop... until I went into fast boot... turns out I have ac mode locked (A kernel setting I set awhile back when experimenting) so now my phone is stuck in clockwork mod recovery and I'm unable to make any changes via ADB commands or Fast Boot.
So basically what I'm asking is if my phone is completely screwed over, and if there is any way of removing the AC Charging lock, without flashing a new kernel or booting (Since I did a full SD wipe, all my backups and roms, and kernels are gone) and if I will have to send my phone in to get it repaired
UPDATE: so I noticed some basic functions of the phone work, pressing the volume up and down keys eventually cause the phone to viberate, as if the phone is vibrating when it goes into silent mode, the backlight turns on and off when the power button is pressed quickly, what is going on, any ideas?? is the phone running properly and i just cant see it??
Final Update: So I got Everything working and I am now able to flash a new rom and everything on my phone... the way it was fixed was by use of the OTG cable, After leaving my phone running a little while The usb Mounted with absolutely no trouble I used the reccommended roms and it installed with no issues, now that I have a running backup I am now going to install the roms I used before all the issues arose, thank you for all your help!! you guys saved me a trip to a repair center, and also spending for a new phone Cheers!

ummm lol oops, can you post your fastboot getvar all please, is that even possible ? then we can see if we can find an RUU for you to run through your phone.
EDIT, just saw you cant make any changes via fastboot or adb, my bad, my first question to you is why would you enable an option like that ?, I could suggest you get a USB OTG cable and stick a custom rom on it then plug it into the phone and from recovery flash it, problem is, most custom roms require twrp recovery and you have cwm.
you could send your phone in for repair, but im guessing your bootloader is unlocked and unfortunately, this voids warranty and you'll have to pay for any repairs.

Thanks for your response! (im a newbie, as you probably already know)
about the Force AC issue: I foolishly enabled it when i was customizing my kernel not knowing that it would give me this much trouble, and the effects it'd give.
if I got a OTG cable would that work? or would it go into AC mode? What if i got the sense venom rom and installed it on CWM? that's what I used before and it worked quite well. i am going to town now to buy a OTG cable ill be back and ill let you know how it goes, I think this may work... Finally a slight gleam of hope for my HTC One

that rom will just bootloop, it requires twrp recovery.
you could try and put CM11 on a usb stick, plug the usb stick into one end of the OTG cable (on the go cable) and the other into your phone, boot into cwm and then select install from OTG, I think CM roms require CWM, cant promise anything, but worth a try.
normally you would beable to put stock rom.zip on the otg cable and flash that, but it requires a locked or re-locked bootloader, and that's not going to be possible without a fastboot command.
another option that springs to mind, is put the kernel you originally flashed on the OTG cable, install it in CWM, im guessing the option to enable force AC was enabled during install ? just disable it and continue with the kernel flash, after a reboot you may get fastboot USB, easy to fix once you get that.

I second the idea of the USB OTG, I use mine all the time.
this Older version of ARHD should work fine with cwm

OK So i got an OTG cable and now I am preparing to download the required roms and everything onto the USB, the only question i have is if the usb will work with the current (AC only) power settings, or will it not work? *Sigh* this is so frusterating
EDIT: soo... the OTG cable does not work from what it appears, I just cannot figure out a way to mount it with CWM, any ideas?

only one way to find out, with the phone in the bootloader, plug in the USB OTG cable now and see if it turns to fastboot host ?
if not, don't worry just yet, you'll still need to see if it works in recovery or not.

when you select install, does it not give you an option to choose between internal storage and USB OTG ?

unfortunately I think its lost, theres only a couple more things you could possibly try, one is to riffbox it, you should beable to get this done at a little back street mobile phone shop or although its not a hard brick, you could try this, not sure if it will work on your device, but if it does it will re-write your partitions.

this is the first soft brick.......ummm.......hard brick HTC M7 ive seen.

ok, the only problem is that it requires a usb connection, and that's my problem, it changes to AC power when it gets plugged into any powered device via usb... see I know i could fix my problem if it were not for the damn kernel settings I made a long while ago, like It still works, I just can't access the internal SD card

still nothing... but i did find something interesting, when it reboots and it passes the HTC splash screen the screen goes black like it should, but the USB light turns on and it flashes like its supposed to (No Light when in recovery), and also the power buttons turns on and off the backlight, and the volume buttons turns seems to make the mute single vibration when it is pressed down enough times. very strange
edit: when doing the unlocking gesture it seems my phone is working! volume presses makes the default beep, holding power buttons makes a quick vibration like when the power menu appears... do you think my phone IS working its just the kernel that is messed up? and is not allowing my screen to function correctly?
ok, so now my phone just goes to the AT&T logo and reboots
help?

Have you tried a USB jig? You can make one for a few dollars with capacitors.
Also, this page may have additional ways to reach download and recovery modes, see if there is something you have not tried: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953930

For some devices devs have create a stock rom image intended to be loaded on an external sdcard. Devices with troubles booting fom a rom on the internal sdcard at times will boot from the external card.. When they do the user can then place a recovery flashable zip of the correct bootloader and modem on the device and flash such to restore the phone to working order. I think the i897 is one but I don't know that the i896 is.
