UK Firmware Are The Most Bugfree And Stable? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Ladies and Gents,
As we all know, the UK is one of, if not the last to receive firmware updates for the Z1, this is if we receive them at all.
We are told that the reason for this is that some UK carriers refuse to sign off the firmware, presumably due to inherent bug and stability issues. As a result this should mean that UK firmwares are the most stable and bugfree.
Is this true in your opinion. Have you run different 'regional' and or UK 'carrier' versions of the same firmware, and is the UK's the best.
Please let me know, especially in relation to the KitKat upgrades ('681' and '757').

its the same update in every country, just because the UK takes longer to release the update doesnt make it different

Maybe

I'm not sure this is strictly true.
For instance some regions use different LTE standards, does that not mean that therefore there are variations in the software to cater for this?
Also some firmware include apps not present in others, can this not also impinge on performance and stability?

usually the nordic version is least-bloated

Just because the UK firmware is one of the last to be released it certainly does not make it the most bug free, my one has bugs and no matter how many times I repair via SUS or PCC they are still there, so take your pick of the ftf's

[Q] How, exactly, do OS updates happen?

Back when I was a Blackberry fanboy *ducks* here is basically how OS updates would happen:
1. RIM would release the OS update 'candidate' to all the major service providers who carry the specific phone - Bell, Telus, Verizon, whoever.
2. The provider would then test the OS.
3a. If it passes their testing, they would make their changes, patches, install their bloatware, etc. And then release it to the public.
3b. If it fails, back to RIM.
So essentially, it's the providers that everyone waited on for updates, not the hardware manufacturer.
Is the world of Android any different? Are we blaming Samsung for not releasing Froyo, but really we should be questioning our service providers?
anyone????

And for this forum, this phone, it's up to Samsung more or less. No carriers. The NA-variants on the other hand, it's up to the carriers after Samsung releases it.
Ok so I'm confused then, if Samsung directly releases the OS to the consumers, how does Bell or Verizon or whoever get their bloatware built-in?
*edit* sorry I didn't see the last part about North American carriers. So Samsung has to release the OS to the carrier, and then the carrier does their thing with it. Correct? So even if Samsung releases the OS, Bell isn't necessarily going to get the update to me in a timely fashion... ?
no need to complicate things
if you want the official release, just keep checking Kies on a daily basis
if you hit firmware on Kies and it tells you new update is available, get it
if not, then just go on with your daily business
it will show up when either bell / samsung are done with what they need to do with it before it gets released
but if you really want release X from build X you can simply change the registry to hack it to let you download the release for model X
but of course.. if your phone dies, then it's not Bell's problem
luckly enough so far Samsung has been pretty amazing in accepting all the failed flashes by end users without charging us a cent
don't want to jinx it, but if they get too much trouble they might start doing that.

Here is how it works:
1. Google releases new OS versions
2. Hardware manufacturers get the OS source code and add their own drivers as well as customizations to build a ROM image.
3. Manufacturer tests and then releases directly to customers if it is not carrier branded.
4. If it is a carrier branded phone, Manufacturers will need to bake in carrier specific customization and bloatware. And send to carriers for testing and validation.
5. If it passes carrier testing, the firmware will be released to customers via either OTA or Kies.
It will be a significant delayes between a new Android OS releases by Google and a new firmware contains the new OS to end users. More so than your old Black Berry OS updates.
Froyo was released in early summer 2010 and eariliest Froyo ROM updates for Android phone occured in August. And most happened in late August and sept. Our Galaxy S is further delayed until mid to late Oct because Samsung just can't get their act together to release a quality build.
It's quite a nightmare. No better than the old Windows Mobile updates.

Why are we complaining about optus when we are on custom roms?
Hopefully its not going to be bogged down by their firetrucking bloat/ 1 star apps like they did with the GB update which I unfortunately had to put up with for a day and a bit

True about being able to disable them
Thats a good feature of ICS, and probably why the android devs decided to build it into ICS
But, laginess IMO creates the impression that the phone is crap
which creates the impression that the hardware is crap
and that HTC is crap
and android is crap
And thats why people buy iphones
Same with low end phones like the OG wildfire which didn't have a GPU
They are compared to the iphone (unfairly) and people class android in general as being crappy
Thats what happens in Melbourne/Australia anyway
/rant finished
And @OP don't cry, we are here for you, at least you don't have to put up with optus and their mediocre network and bloatware

If you really need ICS flash a ICS Rom out there.

Yup, no update in the land of Aus, makes me sad .
But im on a custom rom so im not complaining..
Does anyone know if its possible to downgrade your HBOOT to acquire S-OFF if you install the update that will be rolled out in August?
I know it is currently possible. But will it be possible with the new update?

The tacoroot exploit used now does not work with this new hboot
Better to s off now
I'm a little intrigued as to what's happening with the Virgin AU phones. While they are run on the Optus network and they have an Optus CID (OPTUS002) they are completely unbranded and have none of the Optus software installed and do not have a sim-lock either so theoretically they should get the same 'clean' update as the European WWE release. Virgin haven't said whether any updates will be pushed by themselves so I don't know if these phones will even get an update or whether they will get it at the same time as the branded Optus units. Due to the lack of customisation on Virgin phones, it's a bit ropey having to wait until late August to receive the update (if at all). One can only hope it's because they are ironing out even more bugs for the final release.

I did ask them a few months back when I was speaking to them regarding a billing issue. They said that any updates made for their phones are available from the manufacturers websites. The person I spoke to had no knowledge of the concept of OTA updates and said I should simply check the HTC website on a regular basis.

4.2.2 Official?

Guys see I was going through gsmarena cause i love to read people comments and what I found there!
Sent from my Note via Tapatalk
I doubt it's true. If you look on sammobile, different versions of 4.1.2 are still being pushed.
4.2.2 will probably be skipped, 4.3 might get released at some point, but I think sammy is pushing
people to upgrade to N3. It's in THEIR bottom line to get people to buy new hardware, not to
continue to update older hardware. Personally, for my use, stock 4.1.2 is very stable (N7000 international)
Nope, there isn't any official 4.2.2.

[Q] Quick question about CDA

Hi
I've bought a new D5803 from China and upgraded it (using Sony Companion) to Android 6.0.1 (23.5.A.0.575).
I just noticed the Customization Version that came with the phone is 1288-3732_R3D (Saudi Arabia I think?)
I live in the United Kingdom and was wondering if it's worth flashing 1288-4954_R10D (Generic UK).
What difference does it make if I stay with the Saudi CDA? any software restrictions?, or speed of update releases?
I've used the tool Flashtool/XperiFirm to build 1288-4954_R10D but after reading all the stories of people breaking their phones, I'm a bit hesitant to flash it.
I come from the Samsung i9505 section of XDA so things are a bit different here.
Thanks

You are wise to hesitate to start flashing, if you read further down this Q&A thread it's littered with cries for help from people who have either bricked their phones or lost the DRM keys, disabling some of the higher functions of the phone. Sony's insistence on using an encrypted partition with unique identifier keys on it, puts it a long way from the likes of Samsung & LG, where you can root and flash a rom on your new phone in about 5 minutes. This has caught a lot of people out who come to Sony from those phones.
I don't think using a Saudi build will have any impact. I once flashed a eastern European build on my phone, only to discover that the size of picture attachments to text messages, was to big for the UK providers.
But as long as everything works and you have no hankerings for root on your phone, then 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'
There is a great guide here, if you do want to go down the customisation road. Take your time to read the entire page, then possibly read it again, before you do anything.

Sound advice Didgesteve. Thanks for the reply.
The phone is behaving perfectly at the moment (apart from a temperamental Contacts app).
I think I will spend time learning everything I can about this phone before I attempt to flash anything.
There are a few things I miss about root but the risk of bricking the phone through ignorance isn't worth it.
Thanks again for the pointers.

Same problem
I'm in the UK and still no update. Not sure if it's landed in the UK for anyone to be honest. All previous updates have been OTA and I've not tried to flash anything or root my phone. On the Three network. Still on 4.1 and EVA-L09C432B166
The rollout of V7 for the P9 in the UK is really weird... Some people have it and some dont. A guy on here said he got the update & was with Three and in the UK. Here we have someone saying the exact opposite.
Can anyone work out this complex rollout method?
I bought mine from O2, It was Unlocked and Unbranded. I too am waiting for the update although mine is currently on EVA-L09C432B182

I'm on O2 UK too in the UK. No update for me either. I am on LO9C40B190. I emailed Huawei and got the usual speel about we understand your frustrations blah blah. They said they have released the update and it is now down to your carrier to release the update. Funny how O2 blame Huawei and then Huawei blame the carrier. I would just be happy to update manually with with a clear guide that should be provided and supported by Huawei.
Its rolling in batches(30000 i think)
But not via normal "settings->update" options but via HiCare, early access. So check that out few times a week. I got mine few weeks ago when I noticed info from HiCare.
I think its still in RC mode, so its not released fully.
PS. Please dont use such big font, especially in that style, I think even kids would not use ComicSans... especially in XDA forum...
So I think we just have to wait

So are you saying that Settings-Update is useless? The last OTA update I got (to B182) was thru this.
If I go into HiCare and select "Service", "OS update early adopters" it says "No Updates avialable"
If I go into HiCare and select "Me", "Check for updates" after checking it ells me "The current version is up to date"
Seems like Huawei are really confusing the hell out of people and making it as complicated as possible...
O2 are just as useless!
Apple have this properly sorted in that when its out, its out for everyone.
Can I ask everyone on O2 UK to email Huawei to ask about updates. If enough people ask they might lean on O2 to get there act together and release it.

I didnt said its useless. Read whole post. I said that right now its in RC mode(""Release Candidate"", its version after beta just before official release). I said that because its look like that, im not expert in that topic.
And no Huawei dont confuse people, its more about XDA and we(users) confuse each other, because If official update would be OFFICIAL, you would get it via normal update release.
But right now its not official, just like name suggest, its: ""OS update early adopters"". So its LIMITED to batch of devices every few weeks(i think, its just look like that).
Because that how I got last update, via that option, just like that I checked HiCare and saw notification that there is early update for 30000 users.
Not to mention that if you have branded phone from operator... Huawei actually have nothing to do with your update, because... guess what? you bought branded phone so operator is responsible for your updates! Simple as HeII.
Also dont compare Android update to Apple update, because:
1. Apple have just one model of phone and tablet with about 4 version supported right now(older devices)
2. They have the same system design and functions, beside few separate features of newer devices.
3. Apple use their own chip, and have really small amount to things to update in terms of hardware
4. Android is open system used by about 200 companies that use dozens of different chips, thousands different component and thousand different system design and style.
5. Huawei compared to other brands its not that bad, and I actually rather wait few months to have polished system than, for example other companies that throw update "just to be first" and then they need to send dozen of fixes for major component of system.
Also we should get real, Android 6 is not that bad, so I seriously dont understand your hysteric desire for update.
Honestly after I updated to EMUI 5... i dont see real difference from 4.1.1 beside few new themes and few different(and actually weird) placement of few buttons.
Honestly you will spend 99% time using separate apps and games from market, so beside different number of system you will not see difference.
Thanks Akinaro for explaining that. Makes complete sense now.
I guess we just need to chill and wait for the "Official OTA release"
I'm more than happy with v6, however, when you see videos of the latest and greatest... You get tempted & impatient!
still nothing
