Before I get flash happy, do I need to be s-off to flash any ROM or just ROMs like vipermod that aren't really official sprint M8 ROMs?
I'd like to flash the Bare bones ROM
You don't need s-off to flash Roms, however it's highly recommended, because s-off can make fixing things much easier if anything gets messed up.

S-OFF should not be needed for any rom...but some roms seem to behave better with an s-off device lol
I would highly suggest getting s-off if you can
I tried, gotta wait to a new exploit or method is found. Thanjs , running viper now. This is my first time having to deal with S-on.

Hello ... bought incredible s online which is s-off.... but when i look in the forum, i read that s-off for this phone is still on the way !!!! And if i flas the ruu's will i loose root ..?
May be you lost S-off if it is done by xtc clip why dont you try custom roms which have sence 3 better than officall sence 2 roms
ill give that a try..., actually i have s-off but lost root.. dont know why? which custom rom are u using and can u recommend one for me
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088498
this is one of the best roms not so many custom roms to chose from because many users are still s-on may be after s-off release you will see bunch of good roms
wow ur really lucky to get it s-off out of the box
Yeah...but its not rooted and the recovery is in an other language ;-)
So use gingerbreak to root it and use rom manager for the latest recovery ^_^

Just a quick question.
I have HTC IncS Sim free bought in UK.
I have S-OFF it using revolutionary and is rooted.
If i were to apply the OTA update will it work fine with my fone or do I need to S-ON it first and then apply the update.
you will need to revert to s-on first. beware, once you update, you might not be able to s-off. I read that the update comes with hboot 2.0. no one knows if it can be s-off'd.
if you want to keep the phone s-off, just flash arhd 2.1.0. Mike just updated the rom using the official update.
okay thanks alot.. So to revert it to S-ON again i believe i need to update to a stock rom but which rom should i be using for my base band version 20.2808.30.085AU_3805.06.03.03_M
read this

try this. you should be able to deduce from reading the thread. if not, i'm sure someone can answer your question if you post in that thread. good luck

You sir are crazy. Is no one seriously not going to tell this guy not to do it? The ota update that was just released is a piece of crap, the roms on the dev section are light years ahead of the newest htc update. Don't do it!
I agree with "itsbeertimenow", you may wanna avoid the latest update as it includes hboot 1.16.000 and revolutionary will NOT work anymore.

haha. i already suggested using arhd if he wants to keep s-off. what he does with the info i provided is his prerogative.
having said that, I agree with you beertime. if it were up to me, I would not switch to the official ota update.

I actually read that it's hboot 2.0.
afaik, 1.16 can now be unlocked by downgrading then using revolutionary.

Hboot 2.0 is even worse...so no update for me.
Yeah, I know about the gold card option, which I will have to try at some point...but the risk involved is a bit concerning at the moment.
Anyway, I would advise against the update.
no update from me
my advice is to not update.
I was always a stock rom fan giving the reason, a. root involves a risk of bricking your phone and b. HTC was doing not bad on their sense UI IMO. (OK you could argue that but I personally believe so).
But this 3.0 update is just so not HTC, I don't see a big improvement of performance but the otherwise, and the UI feels like beta version of a custom rom.
check my recent post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383806
Also, consider other members' opinion on rooting back from stock 3.0, you'd better stay and wait.

Just bought the device
I just need to know
How to rooting installing CWM and Which MIUI or CM9 Rom is stable
Welcome to community. I am sure if you go to development section you will find a complete thread about how to root your device
And I am using MIUI 2.3.9 (not updated latest 2.3.16 yet ) & must admit it's quite stable even they say it's beta ;-)
Sent from my Incredible S using xda premium
Rooting guide is in dev section. Cm9 is not available yet we have cm7 or you can try one of the ics roms that devs have made. Ice cold is Probs the most stable ATM.

Do you know your Hboot version? Is your phone S-Off or S-On.
if your hboot is 1.09.0000 or 1.13.0000 simply go to http://revolutionary.io/
if it is 1.16.0000 or 1.20.000 do this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105 and then this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1373697
you dont have to do the second step, but it will give you s-off which is easier when it comes to flashing roms. S-off also allows you to flash custom kernels and radios

Please stop giving misleading information. If users would like to gain s-off on hboot 1.16 and 2.00 they do not need to unlock bootloader first.

i found that way easier for me so... yeah
Only reason to unlock bootloader I can see is to run custom roms without rooting phone, given though, I unlocked mine first so can't say whether or not it helped later on when I decided to root.

Camera on IceColdSandwich 6.1.1 working quite well for me.
during the downgrade the first 2 steps are just to re lock the boot locker as the stock htc ruu don't get installed on a unlocked bootloader
its better for them not to unlock theirs as it will later give an error "security warning".
so its best to straight away run the downgrade ruu provided in the guide from fastboot
hey guys !!
just got a vivid !
it is gsm unlocked from at&t and i'm using it in india !
as i just got it, i am a complete noob at it !
i have flashed atrix, thrill, n900, hd2 , etc so i am not a noob at flashing !
i dont want to s-off my device and want to install all the custom roms without doing it
someone pls guide me !
thanks....
Go to the HTC website and find the latest ICS RUU for AT&T and run it. Unlock your bootloader. Flash a custom recovery (I prefer the WCX one). Then install whichever kernel + ROM. You say you aren't a noob at flashing and such, so I assume you can do that without much hand-holding? If you need more info then follow the guide in my link but only do the steps I just told you above.

I wouldn't even attempt it without knowing the full ins and outs of what your doing. I would read, read, reread all the issues others have had. Then learn what not to do by those people so you don't end up with a brick. After you have read, read, and reread, and understand then you can attempt it. That's what I done and have never had any issue on this phone flashing anything. Please don't jump the gun and try to do this without reading!

That's how I did it...but without posting questions...I'm no expert but I read, searched and reread when migrating from icrap...didn't want to ask questions which have already been answered in other posts...that is what irritates devs...I don't think people mind questions...but at least do your homework first..

You can flash faux123's if you would like. I use the kernel myself and can say that it's the quickest, most stable, and most battery friendly kernel I've used so far. You could flash those S-off ROM's as well, you would just need to extract the boot.img from the rom .zip and flash it through fastboot.

Use THIS to root. Make sure you are on ICS though so you have the updated HBOOT
If you want a stock Htc sense 3.6 (The one that is offical for our device) I would recommend Wild Childs WCXbuilds.. You can google WCXxperia for his site.
If you are looking for a newer Htc sense I would recommend Homeslices "BoRKeD" Htc sense 4.1 build
Hopefully that can help ya out.
I bought an HTC One (M7) second hand. The previous owner had rooted the device among other things.
It's currently working on Rogers network.
Can you help me find out what the original software version/carrier was on it?
I was thinking of using the latest Rogers RUU but I don't want to wreck anything.
Is there anything that may hinder me from using the RUU?
The phone shows, S-On, *Tampered*, *Unlocked*
Please give me any advice you can and I can clarify anything you need.
I have experience flashing roms on other phones this one seems more complicated.
My main goal is to have a stable Android 4.4+ on my device.
Thanks!

You're saying I should leave it alone and just flash a custom Rom vs a stock one?
I actually like that idea.
But, if I wanted to go stock in the future could I just use the RUU or would I need to do some other changes first?

Yeah just install a custom rom.
I need to go back to stock for warranty still trying to figure out what to do execty.
there are some guides on how to do that. but since you have a second hand I don't think you will have to ever go back to stock for warranty issues
