[Q] to update or not to update - HTC Incredible S

Just a quick question.
I have HTC IncS Sim free bought in UK.
I have S-OFF it using revolutionary and is rooted.
If i were to apply the OTA update will it work fine with my fone or do I need to S-ON it first and then apply the update.

you will need to revert to s-on first. beware, once you update, you might not be able to s-off. I read that the update comes with hboot 2.0. no one knows if it can be s-off'd.
if you want to keep the phone s-off, just flash arhd 2.1.0. Mike just updated the rom using the official update.

okay thanks alot.. So to revert it to S-ON again i believe i need to update to a stock rom but which rom should i be using for my base band version 20.2808.30.085AU_3805.06.03.03_M

read this

I have read this but i do not know which version of stock rom would is for my device? how do i find that?

try this. you should be able to deduce from reading the thread. if not, i'm sure someone can answer your question if you post in that thread. good luck

You sir are crazy. Is no one seriously not going to tell this guy not to do it? The ota update that was just released is a piece of crap, the roms on the dev section are light years ahead of the newest htc update. Don't do it!

I agree with "itsbeertimenow", you may wanna avoid the latest update as it includes hboot 1.16.000 and revolutionary will NOT work anymore.

haha. i already suggested using arhd if he wants to keep s-off. what he does with the info i provided is his prerogative.
having said that, I agree with you beertime. if it were up to me, I would not switch to the official ota update.

I actually read that it's hboot 2.0.
afaik, 1.16 can now be unlocked by downgrading then using revolutionary.

Hboot 2.0 is even worse...so no update for me.
Yeah, I know about the gold card option, which I will have to try at some point...but the risk involved is a bit concerning at the moment.
Anyway, I would advise against the update.

no update from me
my advice is to not update.
I was always a stock rom fan giving the reason, a. root involves a risk of bricking your phone and b. HTC was doing not bad on their sense UI IMO. (OK you could argue that but I personally believe so).
But this 3.0 update is just so not HTC, I don't see a big improvement of performance but the otherwise, and the UI feels like beta version of a custom rom.
check my recent post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383806
Also, consider other members' opinion on rooting back from stock 3.0, you'd better stay and wait.

[Q] How to S-OFF 2.30.405.1 (Android 2.3.3 GB)?

Hello,
First off, yes I have searched for my problem and I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but I'm getting pretty confused with everything that's going on anyway so I would like to get some answers straight to my problem.
As you can read, I am trying to get S-OFF with a
HTC Incredible S
Android: 2.3.3 (GB)
ROM: 2.30.405.1 CL88716 release-keys (<- Latest OTA Stock ROM)
HBOOT: 1.13 (.0000)
I'd also like to mention that the XTC Method is NOT an option for me.
I have read through some posts about AlphaRevX not getting root (Which is what is happening to me) But they only offer a solution for 2.12, not 2.30. I have tried following this solution anyway, but it says 'Main version is higher' or something like that.
Due to this I do have a goldcard, if this is of any help.
Is there any way for me to downgrade so I can use AlphaRevX, or any other solution to get my S-OFF, so that in the end I can install Clockwork Recovery and root my Incredible S, or do I have to wait for a new exploit?
Thanks,
Shinugen
No known solution at the moment that I've heard about. I think it's a new exploit needed unless someone finds a workaround. Hopefully the AlphaRev guys will find us something for this ROM version soon.
Okay, thanks for the information.
You can also just wait.
Sorry for the double post here, but I thought I'd post my findings for anyone else interested in this matter.
After reading some news from HTC itself (Boredom, yay?) I came across them stating that they've "Listened", and will be bringing out OTA (Over The Air) Firmware upgrades which enable you to unlock the bootloader (Thus effectively setting your phone to S-OFF.)
This will be happening around August / September.
I suppose it's a race against the clock whether XDA is quicker, or HTC.
I'll have my money on XDA. xD

That particular announcement did not include the Incredible S, so it will probably be later than August/September.

It's happening in August/September for the Sensation and eventually the EVO 3D. No announcements on whether this will happen for any other device including the Incredible S. So don't hold your breath on HTC doing it themselves.

As I recall it said the bootloader will be accessable for "all devices getting such updates". You could argue about the meaning of that, though I hope they meant OTA Updates with "such updates", which would mean the HTC Incredible S is included.
Plus, if they do it for the Sensation and EVO 3D, stating "They've listened", why wouldn't they do it for the rest of us?
I suppose you're right though, lets not get our hopes up. That said, it would be nice.

just a queston,
rooting is not possible yet and we cant downgrade not even with goldcard, so there is absolutly no wey to get cyano? is thet right?

Short answer: Correct.
Long answer:
Rooting is not possible because the newest update has patched the exploit that was used in order to gain root access. Downgrading with a goldcard is not possible due to the Main Version check.
What you'll have to do is wait for people to discover a new exploit for this version, so that we can gain root access (Temporarily) on 2.30.405.1. If that's achieved, we can run the AlphaRevX process (Loosen te NAND lock, get S-OFF).
Once that is done you can go ahead and flash the /system (Custom ROMs) and /recovery (Cyanogen, Clockwork, etc.)
The above might not be 100% accurate but this is how I understand things.
If anyone spots a mistake, please do correct me.

If you find someone with an XTC Clip, then that hardware device can give you full S-OFF on your IncS and then you can root and install CM7.

Which Method To Use?

Ok guys,
I've scoured the forums, I've found a number of methods to use but the most up to date one states that even it is out of date and there are easier ways to do this.
I have an HTC Incredible S running Android 2.3.3 (yeah, I know).
Someone post me a link to what they believe is the best method for S-OFF and ROOTING.
Many thanks!

Any thoughts?
1.16 must have a custom Rom flashed to obtain root.
in other words follow the newbs guide to root hboot 1.16 exactly and you won't have any problems however you will not be able to stay stock.

I used alpharevx and its been great. I like that you can still go back to s-on if something goes wrong and you need warranty
I updated my Incredible S, not knowing that it would change my HBOOT version. I was on stock 1.16.0000 for ages, until I found this guide

Any reason to upgrade Hboot from 1.13?

I am @ 1.13, with S-off, unlocked, rooted and CM7. And reason to upgrade HBoot?
I have read other device forums, but did not see anything for this one.
Is you phone working how you want it to/efficient ?
Only reason to upgrade your hboot would be to cause frustration.
Lol... Yeah its fine.

The only reason I see to upgrade hboot is to complicate things for yourself and make htc happy that you have to use there htcdev tool to unlock it again. That way they will always know if you have void your warrenty.
I just wasn't sure what, if any new functionality the newer hboots bring. Thanks all.

Hi, just came across this post and saw that you have HBOOT 1.13 and are rooted.
Could you pass on the directions link from where you got the instructions, been searching a lot but I mostly find all the methods deal with HBOOT 1.16 AND 2.0.
My Inc S is HBOOT-1.13.0000 with RADIO-3805.04.03.27_M.
Would be a real help if you could point me in the right direction.

And I am using MIUI 2.3.9 (not updated latest 2.3.16 yet ) & must admit it's quite stable even they say it's beta ;-)

Do you know your Hboot version? Is your phone S-Off or S-On.
if your hboot is 1.09.0000 or 1.13.0000 simply go to http://revolutionary.io/

Camera on IceColdSandwich 6.1.1 working quite well for me.
during the downgrade the first 2 steps are just to re lock the boot locker as the stock htc ruu don't get installed on a unlocked bootloader
its better for them not to unlock theirs as it will later give an error "security warning".
so its best to straight away run the downgrade ruu provided in the guide from fastboot

Best method to root Incredible S?

Hey guys, I'm new but i know abit bout rooting but in this forum there were 2 stickies on how to root the Inc S, (1. Downgrade Hboot to 1.13 and root
2. Use htcdev.com to unlock bootloader then root. BTW my phone is hboot 2.00 with gingerbread 2.3.5 and Sense 3! So what do you guys think is the best way to root and what advantages or disadvantages each method? Thanx

Downgrading and gaining S-OFF with Revolutionary is going to give you the best flexibility. If you unlock the bootloader using HTCDEV.com, there are extra steps you need to perform to flash a custom ROM, i.e. after you flash the ROM, you manually have to flash the boot.img file contained in the ROM.zip.
Not to mention the fact that you have to give HTC your phone's serial number to unlock the bootloader.
Thanks, But ...

Thanks for that, but one more question (or two more actually.)
1. Which one is more stable and which one method is safe to root
2. If you have a Inc S, or if you did have one which method would/did you use!
Thanks
If you follow nonverbose's guide, then it should be no problem to downgrade and s-off, its quite easy actually
I have downgraded twice, wouldn't unlock with htcdev if I were you
Personally i used HTCdev, then nover's tool then S-OFF. All together it takes hardly any time at all and ive never once had an issue with my phone.
I used revolutionary and it worked very easy. Did it this week a few times after trying to get it back s-on and had zero problems getting it s-off.

1. When you are modding your phone, you are always taking a chance that you will flash something unstable. With Revolutionary, you will be able to flash new kernels, radios and ROMs. With HTCDEV, you will be limited to flashing ROMs and kernels.
2. I didn't have to choose because I received my Bell Mobility IncS with S-OFF via the XTC Clip, so I have the upmost flexibility and stability.
I initially went the htcdev route which lasted a couple of days before I downgraded hboot (had 1.16) and went through revolutionary, if I had my time again I wouldn't bother unlocking through htcdev.
Thanks!
Thanks everyone, I will surely try out the downgrade from hboot 2.00 to 1.13 and user revolutionary! Once again, thanks!
EDIT: Also if I root using nonverbose's guide, which android version will i have and will i be able safe to upgrade to the official ICS when HTC gives it out?

You will be on GB once you have rooted (as i assume thats what your on now) version like 2.3.3 etc will depend on each device. To get the official ICS you would have to un-root your phone - there are plenty of guides to tell you how. However you could just install a rom like playground or ice cold sandwich for an ICS look and feel however these are no-sense versions. We currently do not have a sense verion of ICS.
Way of keeping current firmware?
