Hello everyone,
In the past week, I have decided to sell off my Nexus 4, and I went on to buy a new cheap unlocked 40$ android phone and a used water damaged Xperia Z.
I had just got the Xperia Z a few hours ago, and the guy who I bought the Z from, said a bit of water leaked into the phone about 2 weeks ago, and ever since then the phone does not turn on.
So far I have pretty much disassembled the whole thing, and noticed that all three water indicator stickers at the ports have turned red.
But I seriously cant find any water, damage or corrosion on the phone's connectors, internal frame, battery connectors, anywhere.
I guess only a few drops has entered the phone and over time the water evaporated.
Now after drying the internal components in the sun, and using 70% isopropyl wipes (I looked everywhere for 99% isopeopyl Alcohol liquid, I cant find them everywhere) I wiped it over the phone's motherboard and then used a toothbrush to remove any dirt or corrosion building up in the board.
Now the thing is that the phone does not do anything when I plug in the charger.
But when I remove the battery, and plug in the charger, and press the power button, the phone's LED blinks red for about half a second, then vibrates once and then a blue LED light comes and stays on. However nothing comes up on the screen.
I tried the Power button and Vol.Up button, but it does not do anything.
The Z's battery seems fine, as I tried it out on my Xperia C and it works perfectly there.
And I tried the Xperia C's battery on the Z. Same thing no response from the phone
What should I do?
I guess look around or a 99% alcohol solution and properly wash the Z's motherboard?
Or is this some sort of a software issue?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks!

To me it rather looks like the seller modified the software and hard bricked the device... My Xperia T had the same sympoms when it was hard bricked....
I would have thought the battery had shorted out
Bang a replacement in

Every fault is not caused by a faulty battery. I know you fixed your phone with a replacement battery, but that is not the solution to everything.
If you had read his post properly, you would see the battery powers another device just fine. A shorted battery would surely not function at all.

Well today, I bought some distilled water and washed the phones motherboard with a toothbrush to displace any particles left on the board.
Now When I plug in the charger (with out the battery, as the phone does nothing with the battery plugged in) the phones LED blinks red and the phone vibrates once. It then goes on to repeat this process over and over again.
But my computer kinda detects my phone, as it tries to install the phones drivers. If I remember correctly the devices name on my computer is 'S1 FlashBoot'
But for the computer and Sony PC Companion to detect my phone, I have to remove the battery ribbon to let the phone start up on USB power, and then reinsert the battery ribbon when the phone vibrates and flashes its LED once, and then I have to remove the Button ribbon since, for some reason if the button ribbon and the battery ribbon is connected at the same time the phone shuts off.
Sony's PC software detects my phone, but since I cant press the power button due to the removal of the button ribbon from the motherboard, I cant repair my phone using the software.
Maybe theres something wrong with the power button/ribbon is having a few issues?
I also found some corrosion bottom right hand corner under the network antenna, and a severely corroded 3 segment ribbon, where 2 out of 3 segments were non functional due to corrosion,. As I tried to open the connector, I sneezed and accidentally ripped it.
Dammit.
It didn't work before I ripped it, so I wonder if I somehow fix this ribbon would it help solve a few of the above issues with my phone?
What does this small dinky ribbon do, anyways?

Found this post through google while looking for a solution for my Xperia Z.
My first experia also had the same problem, sort of. The battery would jump from 90% to 60%, then 73%, then 20%, then 71% and so forth.
I decided to update the system software, to which it turned off during the process. The OS became faulty, and it rebooted all the time, showing a weak red light, then a strong red light, turn on, turn off and so on. The authorized service replaced my battery, but I guess that's not your problem in this case, and I doubt it that it's a faulty OS. Because even with a faulty OS, it would atleast show the Sony or Xperia logo.
Now I have the same starting issues and I blame the ribbons I guess, since when I press it the right way, it suddenly accepts charge and boots up. Replace the ribbons, and you might be fine. Guess there's some short circuit.

Hi all
I was unfortunate enough to walk past a very strong magnet yesterday, the kind they use for removing security tags from clothes (in a workshop environment, it was stuck to the edge of a workbench, the phone was in my pocket and grabbed onto the magnet as I walked past). The screen went purple and slowly faded to black, but turning it to standby and back on again it loaded up fine and the screen was back to normal and worked perfectly until I went to bed last night.
I have had the phone on charge all night, as I usually do, but today it was off, and will not turn on at all. Plugging it into my computers USB port causes a charging icon to appear on the screen (it's been on charge all night so shouldn't be flat), when I try to turn it on, it loads up half way to the "Sony" logo on the screen and then reverts back to the charging symbol. I have tried charging it on a 2A iPad charger, the official charger that came with it, a USB battery pack, and from a computer and leaving for half an hour each time and there is no sign of any change. The red charging LED is on as it usually is.
What can I try next? Is it likely to be toast? Considering a large number of retailers still sell magnetic phone holders for cars etc (Halfords for one), I find it hard to believe it would react this way to a magnet.
It's possible it's toast, I guess
Have you tried booting into recovery?
other than that, you may well have to contact Sony
I would try reflashing a stock rom if you can.
Might have wiped some of the memory and needs re-writing.
Phil
Hold the power button and the vol up for a few seconds until you feel 3 vibrations.
See if that helps
It might have corrupted the data or damaged the data chip itself. Try entering fastboot/flash mode and reflash the stock rom, you can find the flashtool and rom files in development section.
It's still under warranty, so you can always send it back claiming its faulty. The magnets that takes pins out of clothes are actually quite strong! We have a few powerful magnets in the lab I work with and more than a few credit cards and phones have been lost due to careless placement of magnets/items.
If the phone did stick to the magnet it may have toasted some internal memory. Let us know if you can flash a stock tft file.
Hi all
Sadly no luck with getting into recovery mode, it doesn't vibrate or anything when holding power and vol up or down just seems to stay in a loop coming up with the battery symbol and then cutting out. Must have fried/corrupted something to do with the charging circuit I think.
The magnet was incredibly strong, it can lift up a small desktop computer which must be around 10kg or so.
Time to dig out my spare SGS3 and send back to Sony I think.
Thanks for your suggestions, will head to the shop tomorrow and see what they say, I'm truly gutted as it was only a few weeks old and has been my favourite phone so fat, I've had it since launch day.
re
Have U tried this?
Start PC companion
Select upgrade
select repair phone
select phone model, the companion will download official firmware
shut down phone pressing power button for 10 secs.
hold the vol up button and put in the usb cable
pc companion will find the phone and restore the firmware , wait at least 10-15 minutes.
restart phone, wallpaper will appear, it may take 5-10 minutes until home screen appears!
Good luck!
Thanks for your reply Connectix, sadly it was not recognised by PC companion when I tried this, I think it's dead for now. Just heading out to take it back to the shop.
bro so sad....
take it to service center ...they will do it for u...
If I Helped U Dont Forget To Press Thanks

Hey, before you bring it back plug it into a wall charger and leave it for 1-2 hours (should give the battery at least 20% min). Then try going into recovery/flash mode again. I had a similar problem when flashing a rom and it hung for 20 minutes, battery died. This is just on the off chance that there might be low battery, but if the magnet can lift a 5kg weight I think you're screwed. Remember, no magnets at waist height!!!
Magnets usually don't kill electric devices. What a non sense. Perhaps it was somekind of electro-magnetic interference which caused the malfunction.
But I don't think it is possible for sony to detect this so you probably get this replaced under warranty.
Hi again
Sorry for the slow reply, Sony replaced the logic board under warranty so all sorted now. Won't be going near that magnet again!
Cheers for all your suggestions

I've recently been experiencing some charging issues with the handset taking forever to charge, the latest charge was taking well over 15 minutes increase 1%. I tried various chargers, including a brand new original one (the one in the box).
Well, last night I put the phone on charge with the handset turned off around 2am, woke up around midday today and the handset was showing the green LED, so it was almost, or fully, charged. Went downstairs to have a cup of coffee and came back ten minutes later to find the LED off. Tried turning the phone on and nothing happened. Tried the reset combination and the red button under the SIM flap, nothing, tried connecting to SEUS, nothing. Tried connecting to Flashtool, nothing. I left the phone on charge for another hour and tried the same things again, nothing.
No lights, no vibrations, no screen activity. The phone isn't even getting warm like it normally does on charge (confirmed that with another charger)
My girlfriend said that whilst I was downstairs she did take it off charge and put it back on charge straight away when it wouldn't wake up BUT she wasn't sure if she put the charger back on the right way (the magnetic one) however the pins don't actually touch if the plug is the wrong way round as the pin towards the bottom of the phone is offset slightly so I don't believe it has shorted.
So great, my almost new Z1 is now a paperweight. Sony won't touch the handset as the back glass has a small crack in so they just spout off about water damage. The phone has never been near water, let alone in it.
C6903 on 757 firmware, bootloader relocked and non rooted. No nasty apps installed and basically running stock,
Anyone have any ideas? I'm resurrecting my old BB for the time being.
I bet its been shorted
Leave it on mains charger for 24 hours

That's what I'm thinking. The design of the dosk pins should prevent that, but apparently it doesn't!
As probably there is stripes to check if water was inside I will exclude that. Also the magnetic connector have his way to plug so is close to impossible to revert it, hardly if you try maybe it will, but I did many time and nothing happened. At last I think you girlfriend mess up with you phone and now she now don't remember because she knows you will be furious...LOL...
BTW, I will press Sony to take look at it. They don't have to replace the cracked glass, they have to check where is the problem.

As you say, none of the water indicators (if I'm actually looking in the right place) are a different colour to normal. The dock pin is offset to one side slightly, it can be seen if you look closely so you are right, it really shouldn't have damaged the handset.
She isn't even sure if she did plug it back in! She was half asleep so I don't know lol
Sony will be getting some nasty words in a letter if they fail to do anything. I don't care about the glass, it doesn't bother me, as long as the phone works,
I water damaged my Z, the water got in through the power, usb flap.
I turned it off,I opened the device back cover, and let it in rice for 3days.
When it turned on it booted all nicely but when I tried to open the lockscreen the device shuts down.
Now I put it in a wall socket and it gives the red light, when i turn it on it vibrates but doesn't do anything, black screen. The xperia doesn't want to charge too.
The fastboot works,so as the flashtool.Only connecting to pc doesn't work.
I don't have warranty and no Sony centre in my country. What should I do?

Bad luck my friend, your phone is dead. Water probably damaged screen and motherboard. You can try to clean it with contact cleaner (contact spray) like this: http://www.wd40specialist.com/products/contact-cleaner/ but don't expect miracles.

I find it a little too fast to say that the phone is dead.
Do you know how much battery charge you had left? Because the Li-Ion batteries have a safety circuit that shuts them down when the battery voltage gets below a certain point. The battery still has some charge, but only to maintains its health for a limited amount of time, and you would have to find a shop that can "jumpstart" it. Your battery is in "safe sleep" if it shows 0,00 - 0,10V or anything like that.
Replace the USB port if the RED light doesn't light up at all, or blinks irregularly. If the phone shows the red led constantly, but doesn't want to turn on, measure your battery and charge it directly. There has to be some shop nearby that works on circuit boards, and if you ask them nicely and bring them the parts, they will surely change the port for you for a few nickels . But that's only if you' re sure that the battery is in good condition.

Oxydised components on motherboard are probably shorted out, I see this so many times in repair center. The best solution is to first clean motherboard with contact cleaner and than try to plug battery back and see if the battery is charging. Shorted out motherboard, in 80% of cases, is dead motherboard.
My motherboard is perfectly fine.
I opened with my friend my Z and his Z.He put my motherboard in his device and his Z worked with my motherboard and all my files were shown there. So i guess my screen is dead? What do you think guys?

Hi there. I had moto g 2 non lte this year. Sometime around spring of this year, i was on a vacation. While on vacation, I dropped my moto g and my bag into a river and thought i would never see it again.
A few days ago, the authorities said they had found my bag with all my possesions and my moto g. they shipped them to me.
I would like to know if there is any chance of recovering my device? So far, I've opened the back cover and saw it was covered in water. Some parts were also rusted. The display has weird purple blotches around the edge. I have tried to power on or charge the device. I have put the device in a bag of rice and put it in a warm area of my house.
Will I need to swap out any parts? Where could I find parts? I'm willing to replace parts. Also, where could I find instructions for replacing parts?
Thanks.
After sitting in water that long I'd be surprised it it ever came back from the dead. Also the worst thing you can do is to power on a wet phone. I would guess that you have some rust on the board, plus in the usb and earphone holes. I personally think the parts would exceed the value of the phone.
Hi there. I've opened up the main board, and I have not tried power it on. I've removed the battery, sim card, and buttons. The main bored appears corroded and I dried it off. If I dip it in 91% isoploryl alcohol, would it remove corrosion? I also saw corrosion in the ports. If I remove all the corrosion and water, logically the device would work again, right?
Anything is possible, you can also put a wet device in a bag of uncooked rice if no type of desiccant or silica powder is available. That will absorb moisture from places you can't see. As for alcohol, alcohol is a solvent and can dissolve the internal adhesives. If it was salt water, that's even worse since it dries and leaves crystals behind. I'll be shocked if you get it working completely after soaking in water. I'm surprised the sim card didn't get ruined.

At this point in time, I really don't care if the son card works or not. I just want to get to the point where I can power the device on and charge. I be read online in many places people suggested to dip your device in 91% isopropyl alcohol. Where can I get this alcohol and how much would it be? I have placed the device in a paper towel and put on top of a heating vent in my house. I'll see if that does anything.
That's regular alcohol that's sold at any drugstore or store that sells first aid stuff. You can buy it in different percentages of strength.

OH MY GOD. I CLEANED OUT THE INTERNALS, REMOVED ALL THE CORROSION I COULD WITH A TOOTHBRUSH, THEN SCREWED THE THING BACK TOGETHER. THEN I PLUGGED IT IN, AND GUESS WHAT, THERE ARE SIGNS OF LIFE!!!! The boot screen blinks for one second and goes away. There is a white led that constantly flashes. The device shows 0% charging. I have tried to boot it into recovery but the device keeps bootlooping. It turns on by itself, blinks white led, shows motorola screen, shuts off then repeats the process. I'll leave it to charge and see what happens.
Okay so maybe I reacted too quickly. I'm trying to get the device working. So far, I can boot it into fast boot mode and no further. My computer recognizes the device and can perform fast boot operations. I have tried to flash the stock firmware but the device reports error low battery remote failure on some operations. The device still does not boot. I plugged in the device for about an hour, but the second I take it off the charger, it cannot function. The device still is boot looping when it's plugged in. What should I do now?
Make absolutely sure there is no corrosion in the USB plug. After that, I don't have any ideas, something in the charge circuit has a problem or something between the battery and board.
Sent from my SM-T530NU using Tapatalk
I can't seem to remove the corrosion in the USB plug. Besides, I can plug my device into the wall or the computer and at least has limited function, however removing the plug will cause the device to loose power. The device shows up on my pc and I tried writing the factory image but the device is still in it's weird bootloop. My computer just keeps playing the USB disconnected and connected sound everytime the device does the bootloop. If I boot into fastvoor I can moto device manager to show and it says fastboot falcon s
That may be part of your problem. The corrosion in the plug could cause most of your problem. That port only costs 50 cents US, but I believe its tightly soldered in and if that's the case it would be very hard to replace without a special soldering gun.

Probabily your battery is dead
I Dropped my A2 into the WC, lucky the phone didn't immerse in full only the side with the buttons, the accident was with the included case, the phone cant turn on.
I take it apart and I verified no water damage to logic board. battery usb connector, barely the buttons got some water , most like sweat in normal use.
I cleaned the contacts, re-assembly and nothing, plug into the PC and nothing is shown in ADB.
It's possible this killed my phone, I have recovered phones with actual wet logic board, pissed, etc, what happened do not use to require more than superficial dry with an towel.
curious I plug the charger and even do not show nothing.
Any Cues ?

I did, then I cleaned the buttons with contact cleaner and leave the phone opened in a shoe box under the sun, logic board was neves wet, so this is strange unless those buttons are really weak about moisture.
i bet that the bottom board, with the usb connector, got fried.
I would also check the display connector for burn marks as it's usually the first thing that fries when water ingress occurs.
It is a very strange situation, because, from the tests on youtube, the phone has a very good water resistance.

I saw this, also I verified the speaker is hermetic do not allow water in, the display is also sealed, indeed the only water that managed to get in was at the power/volume button, and almost minimal.
I'm considering to get another A2 and keep this for spares I I found no solution/cue on what's hapening.
A thing I noted when I first turn on the phone is this phone was somehow reluctant, it took me 3 tries to power on.

Update, after checkint the battery connector I saw it was covered by phone's own thermal paste, I cleaned it properly with contact cleaner, I checked battery boltage with an multimeter it shown 4v, then I assembly the phone, and try to power it on, it vibrated and androidone logo showed, then battery logo appera as depleted, led blinks and the phone shutdown.
If I plug the charger it means only the phone repeat this cicle (androidone logo,-> then battery logo, then led blinks, the reset then repeat)s.

same behavior in fastboot, do not last more than 11 seconds between reboots.
I opened again and put in rice, I'll wait another 48h until try again, maybe there are still something wet there.

After some extra days to dry, still the same behavior.
Solved.
The issue was some mist at the USB port, cleaned dried, plugged, and turn on.
Working like ever, I resealed with silicone.
