[Q] Have I bought a lemon? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I purchased an HTC one for my girlfriend via Swappa so she wouldn't lose her data plan. She was coming from an iPhone 4s so I picked the HTC one for a similar size/feel but desired the Android platform. Anyway, I've had nothing but complaints from her. She says the screen will "freak out" (I'm assuming random clicks/movements) and that sometimes, she loses all control completely and the phone will do whatever it wants. It has randomly dialed her recent calls, and the big complaint this morning was that the alarm didn't go off. Also, I watched (with an aftermarket charger) the continue to beep on and beep off (charging indication) until the phone just shut down.
I have it running a 4.4.2 stock root, done through the firewater method and all that garbage. TWRP is installed, but I haven't tried flashing a new rom yet as I am out of the state for awhile.
Has anyone had similar problems? With all the complaints, I can't tell if it's a hardware issue or software or both. My intent is to make a video to show her how to flash CM, but I figured I'd feel out the community first to see if I'd just be better off getting her a G2 or S5.
All help is appreciated, and I'm sorry I cannot provide software, kernel and other details, as I mentioned I'm out of town for awihle.
Thanks much.

Never encountered any of these things, and these definitely do not seem like software problems. I'm betting that its a faulty One, not sure how swappa works but id get it exchanged as quickly as possible before your girlfriend kills you.

Lemon for sure. You should contact the swappa seller, but if they don't want to do anything (they technically don't have to), ATT or whatever carrier the phone is branded to will fix it. If it's a generic one, HTC will fix it.

Battery Kill - Vibrate latching? Problem!

Ok, so after loading "RUU_Kaiser_ATT_WWE_1.60.502.3_22.45.88._07_1.27.14.09_Ship.exe" for a couple days, tweaking a few things and adding a few software packages...
Yesterday, after leaving my desk for a while with the phone on the desk and unplugged after recent sync with desktop....
I come back and find my Tilt is really hot and totally dead!
Later in the day, last night and today...I noticed that on some email notifications, the vibrate latches in and won't stop until I wake up the screen!
Anyone else seen this? Need to decide whether to restore to factory condition, retest etc...or send back as defective.
Cheers and THANKS!
this has happened to me several times, I finally went off and set email alerts off which is annoying. This also happened on my other HTC phone 8125
This has happened a couple of times for me too on the totally stock ATT ROM.
Annoying but, since it's always with me, it's never gotten worse than "annoying".
Same problem here, since I don't want to disable the vibrating alert I just send a mail to HTC asking for a solution.
Hope they'll anwser.
I'll keep you posted.
Percentages...
Hmm, with these numbers (already)...it is difficult to determine if this is a quality control issue with a small percentage failure. Need some more replies and a comment from HTC!
I'm already inclined to tell AT&T to send me another one, especially since this issue has been experienced with the ship ROM, and it is less than 2-weeks old.
Also original rom and I had the problem from day one.
It's night over here in Belgium, but I won't wait from an answer from HTC. First thing tomorrow I'll call the shop where I've got it.
I've had this a couple of times on my UK Vario 3. It actually happened today.
The problem seems to span different roms and batches.
pjam
I've also have this problem so like most people I disabled the vibrate notification which isn't a fix but better than having it none stop vibrate. Hope they fix this for the Vario III as well as Kaiser
solution from a HTC dealer
I just called the shop where I purchased mine, and first thing the guy asks, "do you really need the vibrating warning? can't you just use a sound alert or something?"
After explaining that I really want it to work as mentioned, he went to ask.
When he came back he tried to convince me that it's normal with WM6. It's a feature. When asked wheter it's normal it sometimes works "correctly" en sometimes it keeps vibrating, he answered it's strange but normal.
Explaining that the battery gets really hot and so didn't help either. He was convinced it's normal. But he gave me a number of HTC. Not a Belgian nr so I'll first wait for an anwer via email till this afternoon.
Anwser from HTC
I just called to HTC Europe, and the woman on the phone said "oh that's not good".
But a solution? I'll have to send it in for repair.
Still waiting for an answer on my email I send to HTC. And if I'll send it in for repair I'll first call again for a better anwser than "that's not good".
But sorry no real solution yet!
seems like this is getting worse and worse for us. I am experiencing the same issue. I have had the phone for about a 3 weeks now. The first week everything was fine. Then this sporadic occurance of the steady vibrate with new text and email messages. It seems like the first 2 vibrating pulses go through fine but it gets hung up on the last one. Full stock att ship rom here as well.
I'll get after AT&T for a replacement tomorrow (GMT -5) and post their response.
Well, not much to report except AT&T gave no fuss and new Tilt is "in the mail". I would suggest even those who are outside the "return for new one" window, get after HTC and/or their provider to replace any units with this "defect"...
Maybe threaten class action... Good luck to all.
I called back to HTC support, explained the problem again. Also said that I'm not the only one but they are not aware of the problem. I'll have to send it in for repair.
So I called the repaircenter, and it would take 2 or 3 weeks.
Don't want to send him in for so long, so for now I'll try to live with it. Still hoping for a bugfix one day.

did u walk into an att store? or make a phone call to customer support? In either case how did you go about proving this was infact an issue?
I called AT&T premier phone support from a shopping mall while waiting for my better half to shop...it took about 1 minute to explain the issue.
Basically, I told them my phone needed to be replaced because it was defective and explained the manifestation (sometimes when email alerts are set to vibrate, the vibration does not stop and if I let it keep going, it kills the battery fast and overheats the unit).
I further explained that I researched the problem online and that is appears a small percentage of users are affected by the issue so that it is likely a manufaturing QA issue.
I also suggested that they send me a new unit versus a refurbished one, at least the first time around. They responded, "Oh, of course we will be sending you a new unit".
It took another two or three minutes on hold for the order to be setup, and I had an email in my Tilt inbox before we disconnected.
Overall the experience was excellent.
Same problem here. Mine is a Hong Kong unit that is HTC branded. Using it here in Canada with Rogers.
Note: I have installed Blackberry Connect 4 as well for connection to my corporate email.
If an message comes in, it will sit there and vibrate like mad until I wake it up. For now, I've disabled vibrate.

sounds very much like the typical idiot you find in such places
is it just email notifications that are affected, or does it happen on all types of notification, ie sms message?
Good question...
Right now I'm running Dutty's Tilt Beta 2 w/ touch and all is good actually. It turns out that the phone ring uses only one vibration (long) and is followed by sound, where as my email uses 3 short vibrations only.
I'm more inclined to reach and answer the phone, than I am to reach to read an email, plus the email gets 3 chances to improperly latch the vibrate.
So, I don't know if it really is only email, or if email manifests itself as the culprit only because it happens more often.
Others may be able to confirm this.
I will say though, I'v had Dutty's running for 24 hours, and although the weekend email volume is much lower for me, I would have expected it to happen again by now.
The whole thing is crazy, sometimes it bothers the hell out of me, and other days it just gets forgotten or I assume it is a glitch.
All in all, I like the phone enough to keep it in the end, even with this problem. However, I still think the numbers on this forum are low enough that I have a decent chance of not experiencing this "bug" with my new phone when it arrives.

[Q] Strange Ringtone And General Phone Issue

Ok, first off I just want to say I have searched around the forums for a similar problem in hopes for a solution and to avoid reposting a question.
For information about my phone, see below the problem description.
Here is the problem:
This just started today, the phone will not play any ringtone or notification sound. I can confirm the speaker itself still works by playing music or choosing ringtones. Alarms do still work, just not call tones or notification tones(even using default ones).
Now that is only part of the problem, along with that, is the fact that when a text message is received, I can view it and dismiss it (Using Handcent as Default). But 30 seconds to a minute after getting the message, or usually while replying to it, the screen will go black and the capacitive buttons stay lit up. No button presses are registered and the only way to gain access into the phone is by removing the battery and putting it back in.
I am also not getting every message sent to me, some will come through while others don't.
Another unrelated issue:
If I wait an extended time between listening to music, usually 20+ hours, for the first minute or so I hear a little bit of static and then it clears up and doesn't happen until the next day.
Info about the phone:
I bought the phone new on eBay at the end of September, the 28th.
The only modification done to it is doing the latest VooDoo lagfix from the link below(I did this within two weeks of having the phone, and it worked fine):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784170
Aside from that, the phone is completely stock running the latest OTA update.
I am using a GoPhone SIM card that has never given me any issues before.
Kernel Version: 2.6.29 voodoo_lagfix_3.0_v1.10
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Build: ECLAIR.UCJH7
Baseband: I897UCJH7
My Background
This is only my second Android phone, coming from the myTouch 3g. I have had the same SIM card for years. Now I have the Captivate, and this is the first time it has given me this kind of problem. I have experience flashing ROM's and all that, I just wanted to wait for an official update for the Captivate to see if GPS gets improved.
I hope I have provided enough information to diagnose the problem, let me know if there is anything else you need to know and thanks for your time.
Side note if this can't be resolved with you guys:
Would I be able to call up Samsung and get a replacement from them?

Probably why it was sold on Ebay in the first place. Just a shot in the dark, maybe the speaker connection is loose? There are a few threads about taking the phone apart if you are so inclined.
Can't see how it would be a warranty, you bought it through a third party. Could always try.

I did think something like that at first, but every other sound works fine and when it is supposed to(startup sounds, games, etc.). And I would think if it's a loose connection that shaking the phone or moving it around would make sound cut out, but it doesn't.
I figured the manufacturer warranty wouldn't apply, but I have gotten warranty replacements in the past on other electronics from eBay. So maybe a little fibbing will be in order to receive another unit.
I'm thinking it is something software, I have no clue what, I haven't made any major software additions or changes since yesterday. But if all else fails I will try changing to a different ROM and if that fails, get a replacement from Samsung.
I would try flashing again.....and running that kernel....kinda makes your phone far from stock...
For some reason the issue has stopped. I only did a few things, I powered off the phone, turned it on with the 3-button combo, and then restarted the phone from that menu. After the restart, I reassigned the notification tones and ringtones to what they were(my personal choices, not system sounds) and it seems to work.
I will probably wait a few days to see if it occurs again, and if it does, I will move on to a ROM from the Dev section because I am convinced its just some apps conflicting with each other.

I figured that was a minor modification, so i just counted it as stock, but I see what you're saying.

Two phones, two roots, two separate "hardware" issues?

I purchased the HTC one from a sprint store. It is the M7_wls hboot 1.44.00. I promptly rooted it by unlocking the bootloader with fastboot and installed TWRP and cyanogenmod 10, since I used and loved cyanogenmod7 for 3 years on my EVO before physical damage and processing inferiority finally made me throw in the towel. It was perfect. beautiful. best device and ROM combo I ever saw. The HTC one and cyanogen 10, a match made in heaven. But then, quite unexpectedly, after allowing the phone to die on a job site one day, it would not take a charge. The good news is that sprint will not attempt to open the phone and so no unrooting was necessary to replace it. In fact they did it there in the sore since I was within fourteen days of the original purchase date. No removable battery! It was their contention, and I tend to agree, that it simply became unseated within the case, although I hadn't dropped it. fine. new phone. I once again unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP and cyanogenmod 10. used it for a day (which was quite cold and humid, but I was inside primarily) and the audio stopped working. No music, no in-call audio. While frantically texting customers, I managed to download the nightly cyanogen update and flash it. My in-call audio came back, but ringtones, notifications, music, games and all other possible audio remained null.
I unrooted it yesterday by running the RUU in a virtual machine (I use a mac) and, even returned to stock, no sound. In-call audio remained (thank god). I took it in again and after the obligatory sea of clerical errors, sprint ordered me a new one. I really don't want to go through this again. I love the phone, but business is suffering. Is it possible that either of these issues were my fault? I've heard the inside of the M7 is quite convoluted and littered with coaxial cables like older HTCs and I did drop the second one twice. It had a nice case and simply slid out of the angled, inside breast pocket of my coat maybe three feet onto the floor each time. No such occurrence on the first. It makes sense what some are saying that the sound card simply became disconnected inside the case, but now I'm wondering if I'm mussing the root up somehow. My new phone will be here in a few days and I'm simply never going to use Sense 5. I'd rather eat discarded blowpops out of a sandbox. How can I make sure this doesn't happen again? Is it possible that these are both hardware defects and I'm the most unlucky customer ever? I see minimal cases of the latter issue occurring on the stock ROM, but it does happen. Usually it is fixable however. Mine was definitely not. Are these phones as unreliable as they have been for me? They seem to really impress even the picky crowd, so I'm thinking no.

[Q] New to me Free G2! warranty question

I have looked over this site and have gotten tons of useful information for when I was rooting and flashing my daughters Nook tablet. Which is running a fairly good Liquid smooth rom currently. I finally decided to join because my girlfriends LG G2 got the dreaded phantom touches, dead spot issue. Well since she didn't want to deal with sending it in to LG she jumped ship and purchased an S5. Which she loves more than the G2. So I got the busted LG G2 .
Since I have a current phone to use I decided to send the G2 to LG for a warranty repair. So hopefully I get back a minty fresh 100% working G2 soon. I will be using a Straight Talk Sim running on ATT towers. I verified it worked in the broken G2 before shipping it off. I was able to send/receive texts and get data. No LTE though but that is fine. I pulled about 7mbps on speedtest which is more than I need. I'm coming from an apple Iphone4. Yes just a 4 and I've had this phone forever now. Can't wait to get rid of it. So even a G2 without LTE is a huge step up. I thought about swapping the VZW for an ATT branded one but ultimately decided the wireless charging was better for me than LTE speeds.
Now for my questions. The original warranty is up in October. Is anyone that is getting a warranty repaired phone have the dead spot issue again? Am I only covered until October on the warranty replacement or does it extend in anyway? I like the phone, except all the VZW BS on it but that can be fixed at a later date.
figured I would update this. I finally got the phone and everything works as it should. I received the same phone back fixed it seems. Only thing is now I can see the digitizer more. I couldn't notice it too much before but it's clear as day now. But small price to pay for a working screen.
I popped in my sim card and setup the apn and even configured it so tethering would work. I had to add something to the apn to get it to work. I don't tether actually but we just went on a long trip and needed it for a quick few seconds so we could send and receive emails on the laptop.
Only issues is the VZW phone had way too much bloat and I would constantly get errors from the VZW apps because I wasn't on their network. So within a day I had to root it and flash the cloudy g3 rom. I must say I love it much more now.
My issues thus far is the battery doesn't seem that great. My old iphone4 held as much of a charge on a 4 year old battery half the size. But maybe that's because I have been playing with this phone alot more. Other thing is the service fluctuates like crazy. I go from 1 bar to full bars back to 1, to 3 etc. I don't hardly ever lose service and I've yet to drop a call but sometimes get a network error.
Back to the calls, I must say it is not very pleasant sounding. The people don't ever complain about the way I sound but other peoples voices coming through my phone sound almost muffled. Definitely not as clear as my old phone. I will have to look into this more. Maybe there is a setting or some way to tweak the sound.

I'd try a stock rom and just debloat it just to rule out the signal and voice call issues. There are some already debloated ones in the Dev section here.

Thanks I will try that out. I hope this isn't the case though because I enjoy the look and feel of the g3 rom over the g2. Even if it was the rom I might live with the poor voice as I don't talk too much on the phone and it's still usable as it is.

Constant Crashing and Screen Freezing Issues

Hi guys.
I'll get to the point and say that I got this phone towards the middle of July to replace my failing Optimus G and it's already having a multitude of issues.
The phone worked great through heavy usage on a week period at the beginning of the month while I was travelling. Two days ago the right side of the screen began to freeze, either showing colored static or what was previously loaded. I note that the screen still works fine even inside of a different app, pressing buttons, etc. but continues to freeze and load what is actually going on a moment later. Happens on both the recovery mode screen as well as the lock screen.
Now, the phone also began to have crashing issues some time last week. I was playing Fallout Shelter when the device suddenly crashed. This hadn't happened with Fallout Shelter or any other (heavier) games at all since getting the phone. I rebooted and later was playing WWE Immortals when the phone crashed when going through the logo and copyright screens. After this crash, however, the phone went from around 50% battery to 0% and needed a charge.
I thought this was a fluke last week until it did it again yesterday... multiple times.
Last night the WWE Immortals crash happened again but the phone remained at 100%, where it was since it had been charging, instead of dropping to 0%. It powered on after popping the battery and pressing the button. Later on in the night, I was checking my email when the phone crashed out of nowhere. I once again popped the battery and it booted. However, this time, it would not load past the Sprint screens after the LG/Powered by Android one. It just hanged on the Sprint logo. It sat there for ten minutes until I took the battery out. I tried again and it wouldn't get past the LG screen.
I attempted Recovery Mode, which works of course, and cleared the cache and rebooted the phone. Once again, it crashed on the LG screen. I gave up for the night and tried again today. Same thing happened a few more times until the phone finally booted. I get in and try uninstalling apps to clear space to bring the phone to 11 of 32 GB free. I go to check what other "misc." data is eating up storage when the phone crashes again and I haven't successfully gotten it to boot again.
Should I attempt a factory reset? The closest Sprint store is miles away (I live in downtown Indianapolis and there isn't one nearby without taking a long walk or bike ride or bounce across bus lines, whatever) and the last time I got help from was just a new phone (replaced a phone because it's screen was broken, yeah, right. I went somewhere else to get a replacement the second time it happened). I feel like this a big hardware issue a reset wouldn't fix but, who knows.
I guess I should also note that, within the past week, my camera apps (be it the stock camera app or Snapchat) crash when using the front camera and it never loads a preview before crashing and the phone has been oddly hot (be it when I was cleaning up apps, idle, or just when attempting to boot) the last day. Also, as I was typing, I've been attempting restarts and cache clears and Recovery Mode, during one of the tries, never even loaded the options and a power button press restarted the device.
...At this point I'm just curious what exactly could mess with a phone this much. I refuse to believe it's any kind of virus since nothing was ever picked up and I know my way around the internet. I like LG phones, I loved my last one (other than it didn't have an SD card slot, but, eh, cloud storage!) and I like the cameras.
Phone is an LS991, unrooted.
From what I have been gathering(and this is all hearsay!) is that the first batch of these phones have serious hardware problems that might be related to the CPU. The best option would to try and get LG to replace the phone as they are less likely to have a phone in stock still that was part of the bad batch. If you can't get them to do it then try a Sprint repair store and see if they will swap it out. Be clear that this a warranty issue and not issuance issue. As a last resort you have to claim insurance on it.

Well, that's somewhat depressing to figure out that they messed up part of the batch but that always happens if it's true.
Guess I'll have to check with LG or get someone to drag me to Sprint to see what they say. I'm not one for getting insurance on tech (and given I got the phone for cheap, being due for the upgrade and all) but hopefully warranty can help me out. Thanks for the heads up!

Spoke with LG last night and the customer service rep was pretty clear that LG does not replace phones they only "fix" them. I would not trust LG to give you a new phone at this point as they will most likely just re-flash the phone and send it back to you. Unless anyone else who has dealt with LG repair in the past can say otherwise I wouldn't go the LG route. Now, if someone bricked their phone that might be a good thing to try since Sprint repair can't flash phones but if you need a new phone it looks like Sprint is the way to go. Just make sure you are clear that this is a warranty issue and not insurance. I bought my phone at Best Buy so this will be interesting for me as they probably will want nothing to do with me since I don't have TEP. I will report back on if they give me the shaft or not because I am sure others might be in the same situation as me.

Late reply is late, whoops.
That's interesting. Never really intended on the LG route since I've never had issues with Sprint replacing a device in the past so I'd go to them before anyone else (which we are, when my mom comes down to help me out with this since the closest store is just too far away and it's her cell plan).
And man, I wouldn't be able to stand buying from BestBuy but that's my personal qualms with them, hah. Hope you had good luck with them.
Hi. We have c got the same phone. Got 4 of them and 3 working great but my husband's is doing the exact same thing as yours and like you we have no insurance and had same reply from lg. And best buy was no help at all. Wondering if you figured out how to fix it or not
Forgot to mention we are verizon not Sprint. Not sure if that matters.
Just got my G4 replaced with a brand new one at Sprint. I have TEP, and they said they'd normally order a refurbished one. But, I got lucky since there are no refurbished ones (they're on backorder, probably due to these issues), so they just gave me a new one.
Lets hope this one one wasn't a lemon like the first one...fingers crossed because I love this phone...
We called verizon and they are over nighting a new phone. Thank you for the reply tho
This happened to me as well. It crashed maybe twice a day and now I can't get it on because it is crashing 1000 times. Its stuck in a crashing loop. Sprint is giving me a completely different g4 when their next batch comes in. It has been 2 weeks and I still don't have a new phone. I am hoping that I don't get this problem again or I am getting an iphone 6.
