Is it possible to use NFC with the screen off using stock 4.4.2?? I can't find anything about it.
I would have thought so as it's an antenna based system, it should be active as long as it's turned on, unless it's powered down in a sleep mode whilst screen is off.
To me that would make it more of a hassle using your phone to use it rather than just swipe it past

No. NFC active only when the screen is; Android security "feature".

This is why the word MOD was mentioned. It's obvious it's a security "feature" by default.
He's asking about a MOD to make this happen. Like the NFC LockScreenOff Enabler Xposed Module that works on great on most AOSP ROMs. Including the Moto X. It just doesn't work on stock. I would also love to know how to make this mod for Stock Moto X 4.4.2.
I wonder if this is the reason why the Moto Skip doesn't work as well when the Moto X screen is off, the sensitivity seems much weaker when the screen is off compared to on.

Two things are going on with a Skip when the screen is off. First, a magnet in the skip wakes the device. Then the NFC element in it can be read.

This is because the NFC doesn't poll when the screen is off. Which is why they make mods like NFC LockScreenOff Enabler
Unfortunately it doesn't work on Stock 4.4.2 ROMs.
So I am looking for someone who has modded the smali code to poll NFC with the screen off with the NFC.apk

You couldn't be more wrong dude. Stock is any STOCK Motorola ROM. Modded or not it's still a STOCK ROM. If it's AOSP or anything other than Motorola's manufactured ROM. It's NOT STOCK. Please troll elsewhere.

Personally, I think you're wrong. Stock implies unmodified. Now, if they were stock and rooted, that would be a different story.
In any case, OP, unless you o it yourself, you probably will not get a way to use NFC with the screen off, especially if you have a non-DE phone.

@imnuts is a Recognized Developer. As a new member you could show some respect. This is a good example of why so many developers stopped helping here.
How moto skip work when when screen is off?
It is just a magnet + nfc tag making it power on when near...
Is it posible to use magnet with other task beside unlocking phone with screen off?

You can use the full screen incoming call screen option from Gravitybox, it looks same like the picture on the left I think.

Course I'm Indian.
Rooting has nothing to do with overheat, we have a great dev like Paul, thus a great kernel like Faux. In fact if there's a problem with stock kernel then rooting should fix it.
Besides, this is one of the coldest phone I've used, absolutely no overheat, I actually use Performance governor, and sometimes I even play some games while the phone's being charged, still the heat is absolutely moderate. When I'm with standard Interactive governor the phone stays cold as hell. That's why I always find it surprising when people say X is overheating!
So then I'll root my device as you said...can you give me the root process and roms kernels you use.......

Unlocking your bootloader and rooting an unlocked phone are in this guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2603358
Most stay with stock rom, but there are stock based roms as well as aosp in the development sections. Kernels too. Just be sure whatever you think of flashing are for your device. ?
Yeah that guide is more than enough, however I unlocked the bootloader and rooted mine by just seeing this video thoroughly, as I had no idea about ADB before rooting that guide was not making any sense to me, I mean those commands
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw675ipX-ds
I've been testing some roms and so far none of them have a working active display.
Is there any decent ROM with a working active display?
Yea, i'm looking for one too. As close to stock\AOSP as possible would be great.

Hey, everyone,
This is my first device in a while that isn't a Nexus (the rumors point to the next Nexus being 5.9" - Nope. Nope, so hard).
Well, anyway, I love this device, but I'm worried about development. Granted, I'm used to seeing development efforts pop-up for the device on the day of launch (yay, Nexus)... But it has been a little bit.
What say, you? Do you all think we'll have a good development community? Still within that return period... Talk me off the ledge, guys.

I'm waiting for the new Moto X to come to my door step. I have the first edition Moto X what's an unlocked bootloader. At first I was all kinds of excited to flash different roms. Time after time I continue to go back to stock running xposed modules. Stock-based features of the Moto X are just too darn useful. I plan on only running a few exposed modules on my pure edition
No, because I'm not rooting the phone. I bought this phone primarily because it offer almost all I need without rooting.
Just like most people that used the moto x, I mostly relied on xposed settings just to tweak around a few settings. Motorola's software is basically stock android with a few very useful features added. I used to flash roms ALL the time when I had my GS4, but I no longer have to do that with the moto x.

Interesting. Yeah, I think its features are really useful, as well. I just figured that since almost all of the features have been moved to an app, it wouldn't be too difficult to actually get them on a custom rom. But, yeah, all the features I want are really minor and probably could be added using xposed. Good point, I'll look into some of them.

The Nexus was almost perfect for me. I just found a ROM that was a little more suitable, set it up, and was able to stick to it for my duration with the phone. I would occasionally update to a later version... but I never really needed to. I just picked a good ROM, and stuck with it. I was hoping to do the same here.

The only thing I miss, is custom toggles. I didn't know stock android don't actually have toggles at all, they are more like shortcuts to the settings menu. It's more than annoying. And needing an app for flashlight sucks. If I could get that, would be all the mods I need.

Xposed settings allow for this. Download the GravityBox module within the settings. This allows you to customize almost every aspect of the phone, including all toggles. I set up my phone to have the torch flashlight as a toggle, EXTREMELY handy when you need it really quick.

Oh, I meant all the Moto apps. I really like the ability to customize the voice commands launch phrase like saying "hey droid turbo" instead of "ok google." And the simplicity of Moto actions far surpasses Tasker and the like for things like setting vibrate mode at work.

CM has all the features that stock has other than being able to change the launch phrase, and I doubt anyone cares enough to take the time to port it. If you can't live without it just stay on stock.
Edit: Not trying to be a jerk, but CM 12.1 still has bugs that need to be worked out for the Maxx/Turbo and we still don't have VoLTE officially which I would assume both have a higher priority than these. It may happen eventually but it wouldn't be easy to do so I don't think many would want to take it on.

You guys are asking for stuff already done.
Almost everything has already been ported back in early November for Resurrection Remix which @baybutcher27 did. Moto put the same stuff on all the Quarks and the Droid Turbo is just the last to get freedom. Other devs, other ROMs are there for the Quarks for months now. But the forums got split before that happened (because Droid Turbo owners didn't like seeing all the Quark dev work they couldn't participate in at the time), so you have to venture over to the Moto Turbo/Moto Maxx forum...
However while he ported most everything, he decided to not include it in the ROM as default, letting users install what they wanted.
See this page. Read it carefully.

and that's beside the fact that almost all ROMs already have the same functionality, even it the feature doesn't have the same exact name...
Moto Voice = OK Google

but again, @baybutcher27 has done the work to port most Moto apps. Go read that page. If you install RR ROM, you can decide which Moto suite apps to install with only a couple of exceptions.

I think what he means is that with the Moto Display you get that circular notification where you can swipe left to ignore and swipe right to jump to that notification. Whereas with the CM ambient display you have the full bar across the screen like a regular notification.
Hello everybody.
We all know that Moto Display is very useful and shows incoming notification. In Moto G and E devices, it activates when the phone is moved from its position, or when a flip cover over the phone is opened. However I have heard that in Moto X devices, it activates even if you wave over the proximity sensor.
So I thought of making a small app that does the same. It is on Play Store.

This is a great app, I was missing a lot this feature when moving from Moto X!
Please consider using the Android ActivityRecognitionAPI to trigger the moto display only if the phone is in the "STILL" state. Otherwise the battery will be drained pretty fast when carrying the phone in the pocket, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion, will obviously look into it.
Regarding battery drain, the proximity sensor is always on even if this app is not used (Moto Display activates if you keep the proximity covered for some time and then remove the cover).
Also the app has been designed so that it won't activate MD if the phone is in pocket.
Thanks for the clarification, I was not aware that the proximity sensor is always on. You are right, the Moto Display turns on when the phone is taken out of a pocket, etc. Now I just wonder why Motorola decided not to offer this as part of the stock application. To protect Moto X sales?

This app has nothing to do with root directly. It doesn't check for safety net. It will work whether you are rooted or not.
There is however an exception. If you use any root based utility to uninstall Moto Display apk from system, this app will no longer work.
Hey! Nice work!
I can translate it to brazilian portuguese!

moto g5 plus does bring up display when moved, y do we need this app then?
