[Q] Used M7 has preload files missing (Sense 6 OTA problem) - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
Hi, I require assistance. bought this used unit of M7 (normal edition) a few months back. Totally new to the Android scene before then.
It came with 4.4.2 and Sense 5.5, I had assumed it was untampered with and is fully stock.
Software version is 4.20.707.6, Asia WWE. CL308312 release keys (whatever that means)
kernel 3.4.10-g499e571
So when I had tried to update it via OTA to HTC Sense 6 (file size 666.06MB, what the.. Satan?)
I'd go through it for the first 30% and then it'd be in a red triangle with exclamation mark, which then made me press the volume and power button and got this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
showing that soundhound_freemium is missing, uhh...
It would then boot back normally and go back to the normal Sense 5.5. But I do want the Sense 6 badly and get this issue solved.
I was pretty dumbfounded with this issue as I am new to Android and everyone else is receiving their updates smoothly.
Now I choose not to proceed without the advice of XDA forumers, I wish to ask of what is the next step for me? I came across with the explanation that I'd need to do an RUU to get back to stock? Feeling pretty much dumber from that point on, there are so many RUU files around that I do not know which one I should be using? Any help on this is appreciated.
Steps done so far:
Factory reset from settings
Factory reset from recovery mode
Installing soundhound from Play Store (yea.. no difference)
Continuously attempting it at least 11 to 13 times, still the same thing over again.
BTW: I seem to be getting the app called WeChat every time I reset my phone, I wonder why... I know it's a messaging app but didn't know it'd come with the phone pre-loaded.. uh..
oh and oh, apart from OTA, any other way for me to install it from PC or something? I remember being able to update via iTunes instead of OTA for a newer version of iOS, although of course that was iOS, just wondering if it were possible for the Android as well. Hmm.. oh well
I would really appreciate all the help I can get, really want the Sense 6 UI to test, thank you very much!
EDIT: added bootloader image

firstly on which carrier you are? as you said you tried like 11-13 times but still no luck,well in that case root your device and then install sense 6 rom. I know you are new to android but watch YouTube videos couple of times on how to root HTC one and then install any custom rom.
regarding we chat I read it's preloaded app in the sense 6 update so May be it's just save that app not the whole sense 6 software.
try to factory reset the phone and then update.

hi there! I have tried factory resetting and updating, still the same error! Is there any way for me to update to Sense 6 without rooting? Thank you for your time. As for the carrier, I believe it is an unlocked version, bought it from someone in Malaysia.

I just checked and found out the update has started rolling out for Asian region as few of the Indian users & China regions are receiving updates but not all of them. well if you are not comfortable rooting your device I would advice to wait for couple of days & try again later as may be current update is not getting installed on your device. May be HTC fixes these in coming days. As far as i remember they don't provide full fledge update in the world instead they do roll out updates region wise like that they keep on improving any drawbacks occured in previous regions. so till then patience my friend
or else try going to htc store and ask their help,they might flash the sense 6 Rom or can tell you what exactly is the problem(if there is any) .

Ya, I cannot find a RUU for you to flash so that your device is completely stock. Rooting etc. isn't required.
Best you can do is this:
Flash TWRP recovery 2.6.3.3
restore the nandroid backup from here http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/m7-twrp-nandroid-backup-cid-htc__044-_-4-20-707-6-asia-wwe-zip/
Then flash the stock recovery from here http://d-h.st/jTn
Then check for the sense 6 OTA and install.
NOTE: You will likely loose data doing this, backup first.
I would also wait for more replies today, @alary , @nkk71 or others may have additional information to help

the OTA won't install no matter what you try; it is failing the check on the /data/preload app(s)
at one point your phone was bootloader unlocked and S-Off, and the previous owner didn't do a very good job at putting it back to 100% stock, and unfortunately there is no RUU for 4.20.707.6 or higher (as far as i can tell), so there is no "easy fix" for this.
if you want to return to stock (and be able to receive OTAs), you're going to have to unlock bootloader, achieve S-Off (if possible??), and follow one of the return to stock guides (I have one in my signature).
or use a custom ROM.
You have a journey ahead of you, so time to do some research and reading.
Good Luck

Good day! Thank you for your time, I have read lightly on your super guide, however at this point I believe it might be easier for me to just install another custom ROM instead, not especially keen on getting official OTAs, may I ask if I can just install cyanogenmod 11 (or other ROM you'd recommend) at this point? Is it possible? Thank you!

Hi, I'm not sure if I should attempt this? As nkk71 has said that this might not be an easy process.. Hmm.. Actually to be honest in not especially keen on getting OTA, I prefer the stock Android experience and stuff, not a fan of blinkfeed, should I just get cyanogemod 11? As I understand there is an installer for it right? A step similar to jail breaking iOS devices by using a simple installer, perhaps?

Hi, in light to the possibility of my phone being bootloader unlocked before, I doubt the service centre would assist me in getting the OTA. maybe I'll give it a try, but thank you for your suggestion. I appreciate it. Everyone around me is getting the update fine though, I'm sure I'm an isolated case.

wekcome and good luck to whatever you do. don't be disheartened by others getting update, just learn to root n install custom sense roms with their amazing tweaks for eg- ViperOne Rom.

Most likely ill learn how to root and install custom rooms soon. however I have one more question, as my main interest is now cyanogenmod, and they have an installer for it:
1) the installer doesn't need a rooted phone, so does that mean the installer will do the rooting for me?
2) the installer states that it is recommended for the phone to be in stock android, is my current version considered stock? Although not 100% stock as it doesn't have the preloaded apps?

it is not true that someone must have caused this issue unlocking.
I have the same problem and I'm the first owner and my unit is completely stock. Mine fails in settings.apk

interesting, but weird, I could understand the /data/preload apps but settings.apk is part of /system/app .... that should definitely not happen... and impossible to change without root / unsecured kernel / custom recovery.
maybe you should contact HTC and let them know
EDIT: maybe you should check the SHA-1 on /system/app/settings.apk and compare that to the updater-script
Hi, I also have this issue. How about if we copy /data/preload from the OTA.zip itself (after downloading)? or from an older OTA.zip
I tried that, but on a certain app, it says unexpected content... (e.g: HTCSoundRecorder.apk). Does the OTA check the apk MD5 or something?
I really want the OTA, because I can't S-OFF right now (firewater whelp, cpu rev 003). HTC__622, x.708 rom.
same issue
i have exactly the same issue. mine was cid 332. latin american m7 htc one sense5.5 hboot 1.56
on update to sense 6 its stuck on 30 % with red triangle. once open their is message preload not found tunein.apk missing.
after 1.5 month the update available for my cid but cant install it. i unlock by htcdev but still s-on and not rooted. i reset factory setting from recovery \ bootloader \ phone and problem still the same.i dont want custom ROM
i check with local htc. they told me to check with america HTC help line as my phone is from american region. i dont know why i got latin american region phone in middle east. thanks to online store. HTC American region just waste my days and after all the serial and model detail they told me since you are in middle east visit their branch in Qatar. how i should visit qatar for fixing phone to get sense 6?
well check in dubai service center they told me that motherboard need to replace cost 40% of phone. since i unlock by htc itself i still need to pay for 3 month used device.
i am exhausted.

This is actually the easiest way to do this, but you must get hold of the current software number OTA on your phone, not the one you are trying to install.
so if you currently have 4.22.401.11 for instance, you must grab this same OTA and pull data/preload and its contents, which is all of the missing apps etc, from that OTA, copy to your phone, CHANGE THE PERMISSIONS, restart your phone and re-run check for updates.
nb, you must also have stock recovery on your phone for OTA's to work.

Nexus One, go back like from the origin
Dears, I have a Nexus One that some months back I root follow some steps on this forums. All work perfect. But now, to get more easy updates I think in go back to like when I buy with the official OS and can receive and install directly the OTA updates because now not use too much the rooted advantages. Exist a method to do this? In the phone information show Android version 2.3.3 baseband version 32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04 and Build number GRI40. Any idea? I already receive a OTA message to update to 2.3.4 but when say install the phone tell me that go to restart, after restart show me the Android System Recovery and a lot of options ( reboot, USB-ms..., etc, etc) and a error like not found one file (I not remember the name). Is best unroot? Or exist any easy method to put the 2.3.4 (or latest version in the future) without need backup all the data, wait a lot to update, etc? The OTA updates are simple and I never need backup the info before update. Any help are welcome because Im lost :S THANKS!
If I'm understanding you correctly. You want to go back to stock and receive updates through via google? If thats what you want to do. Follow the instructions here. It will restore your phone to the original ROM it shipped with. Shortly after setting your phone back up you should receive updates fairly quickly. Last time I did it I was back up to current in a couple hours.
Thanks, but when say: "Only if downgrading to stock builds older than FRG33, ONLY FOR AMOLED DEVICES - Revert HBOOT to older version. ******* WARNING - DOWNGRADING HBOOT ON SLCD DEVICE WILL BRICK IT !!! ******* EPF30 Attention - Amoled vs SLCD" How I know what is my version of phone? I can know if is AMOLED? Thanks!
If you use the FRG33 file it doesn't matter... Just in-case you still want to know, you can check which screen you have by typing dmesg in a terminal emulator and scanning the results. AMOLED screen will show up as samsung_oled_panel SLCD will show up as something else...
Thanks! Exist a easy method to get, for example now, the 2.3.4 version of Android without lost information, in simple steps for my Nexus One and without unroot the device?
Third option in this post, but without the first step: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13909618&postcount=2
Thanks guys!, I already downgrade to 2.1.1 and update by OTA to 2.3.4... Now think in root again ajajajaja. But now is more easy using the recovery that I have installed, its OK?
Yes it's a lot easier to root using recovery...
One extra doubt: after start with 2.3.4 the phone not have any information (like new one), but I found on my Market that exist a list of all my already downloaded applications as "installed" but on the phone not found this applications. The sync are active, but these applicaton not are autoinstalled again on the phone automatically and show as installed (that prevent that I can install again...) Any idea?
Software version 4.19.161.11 - Vodafone
Hi folks, first post, just registered here, but I've been reading various threads nearly non-stop for the past 4 ish days on ways to improve my HTC One. I have it rooted, super cid, and s-off at moment, but with standard Vodafone UK-Ireland image. Was reading up on the different roms and getting nearly ready to install the either Google Play Edition rom or ARHD rom and up popped a OTA update for KitKat, (4.4.2) phone is currently running 4.3 I was wondering if the software image is of any use to anyone here? I see a good few firmwares from 02, H3G and EE, but didn't see any Vodaphone ones. So if the image is of use to people, can someone reply with the best way to get it intact off the phone, it just finished downloading at the moment, waiting for me to press install now or install later..... Jason.

[Q] help! m8 HK Connectivity issues- root- noobie
So.. if I missed any posts dealing with this, please forgive me. I am a total noobie at this hobby so I'm not really familiar with all the acronyms or terminology thrown around. I have an M8 HK, I rooted the phone using Opensourcegangster's youtube video. I was able to wi-fi tether no problem. All was good for a few days until the 1.54.654.13 update tried to come through. OK, so the rooted phone wouldn't update the phone, because of the root? I understand that and it kept asking to update. I didn't have time to do update the phone and it asked every 2 hours for days, Now, the phone has stopped asking to update but has also started dropping every call after 10 sec even though signal strenghth seems to be strong and now won't connect to 3G or LTE data. I don't know if any of this is related or if I can even go to a store for help because of the root. Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance Click to expand... Click to collapse In order to accept an OTA update, such as the one trying to come through on your phone, you need to have stockish Sense Rom and the Stock Recovery. I haven't seen the video you mentioned but if your method of rooting involved installing a custom recovery this is likely why your update is failing. Your phone will reboot, enter your custom recovery, attempt to run the script, fail, rinse and repeat until you revert to stock recovery. Lucky for you rooting is really easy to undo, all you need to do is grab the stock recovery for your HK (I pulled the one out of the .9 RUU that's up at another link, i'll try to post it for you in a minute), and then reboot to fastboot (this requires the android SDK and administrator level command window - shift+right click the folder fastboot.exe is in and select open command window here). Then to flash it type "/fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" with no quotes and make sure you have the recovery in the same folder as fastboot. Give me a few minutes here and ill give you the recovery.img file you need. Here is the link for the M8 HK stock recovery: http://rg.to/file/8e32e8cc37ac93d3f0206994f1c7a59b/recovery.img.html That should be all you need to either a) accept the OTA (there are other methods of getting this update since you're rooted btw) or b) visit a sprint store and have them check over your phone. As I suffered data loss on my first HK and no matter what could not fix it I suggest going with the lengthier method of getting the update as I've listed it above so that you can go in and get your phone checked out. Oh, the bootloader.... so there is another step to take if you want to appear 100% unmodified and this step should be completed before you unroot... I followed this method and had a Sprint technician run tests on my phone later that day and had 0 issues getting a replacement device... It's a bit much to go into so I'm just going to link you to the forum page I followed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2710503 You will need to grab the "Faux Locked Hboot" for Sprint near the bottom of the first post and then follow the instructions listed prior to it in the top section. EDIT: It just occurred to me that you are S-ON, yes? The phone I did this with was S-OFF so I'm not 100% certain it will work for you. Can anyone else confirm that you can flash a modified Hboot in rebootRUU state being S-ON? Or perhaps have another method of making the bootloader say Locked and not Relocked as "/fastboot oem lock" results in?
[Q] HTC One 831C - Location India
Dear All, Two days before , I brought the HTC One (32 GB Golden) which on digging the Phone identity came to know the Model no 831C, later after goggling it came to know that I belongs to Sprint Carrier. On inserting the code of Hardware components, I found few test/s were not passed and worked normally, other issues are TV app is not recognizing the server, Double Tap Screen wake/sleep works depending on its mood, vDM Client error pops up often. Request all the experts here to please help me out with the Solution as to how can I make it work flawlessly. Regards Karan Adhikari

Double tap status bar sleep is buggy on lollipop (this can be different if you have custom kernel) 5) disable vDM client app to prevent popups (you should also disable other sprint apps like HtcSprintService and Self Service SZ)
First of all, thank you for addressing my query & sorry for delay in revert. Sir, I do know it’s the Sprint phone, as far your concern on below questions, let me try to answer them as below: 1) Which tests didn't pass? When I run the all functions test by this code (*#*#3424#*#*) in one of the test the error word in green / red appears on screen 2) Which ROM are you using? I believe it’s the Custom ROM, which would have be provided by Sprint. Software no is 1.54.651.8 3) TV app is discontinued by HTC (HTC suggests "Peel Smart Remote") No comments, will try to search the PSR on play store. 4) Double Tap Screen Wake works only when you lift up phone and proximity is not blocked (5 seconds cooldown between trying again). Will strictly follow next time when I do it. Double tap status bar sleep is buggy on lollipop (this can be different if you have custom kernel) Its on Android KK 4.4.2 5) disable vDM client app to prevent popups (you should also disable other sprint apps like HtcSprintService and Self Service SZ) I didn’t find the option to disable vDM app nor did I found other apps of sprint. May I request you to suggest any alternates for it ? Now, sir my other query is Is it advisable to flash a latest LP rom (i.e Goggle play edition or the rom developed by Bad boys team here) , also it seems that I am S-ON, because when I enter the bootload screen Power + Vol Down key where three android icon at bottom appears , I read LOCKED at the very top of the screen. Pl. suggest whether it shall be advisable to do it if so request you to suggest the best ROM which shall run flawless in India. Thanking you in anticipation. Regards Karan
Can somebody help me out with this please.. ?? The snapshots of my device are attached hereby, my only query is, and considering the attached images of device can I flash a Custom ROM on to it? Will that be advisable to do so? Are there the chances to Brick the device. If the answer according to all the Experts here lies in assertive, which ROM is best, since this is a Sprint Device, I have found on the forum that Badboyz rom shall go flawless with any Sprint device, so may I go ahead with it. I am in India presently so wish that all the apps i.e Remote TV, Radio should run properly. Regards Karan Adhikari

The "Locked" at the top of the screen in the bootloader means that the bootloader is locked. If you look directly underneath it you'll see that it says "S-Off". To flash custom recoveries or roms or anything, you need the bootloader unlocked. You can do this using HTCDev, or since you're soff, you can unlock it via adb. Once you're bootloader is unlocked, you should be set for everything. Flash a custom recovery like Captain Throwback's custom TWRP, get root if you don't have it already, update your firmware, etc. The bad boys xda page has most of this stuff in it. Note: Your phone is supercid, so you're not limited to just sprint roms. ---------- Post added at 10:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 AM ---------- Also, just wondering what exactly were the tests that failed when you did *#*#3424#*#* ?
Thanks a lot sir, I am grateful to you, I have followed you instruction of deleting the images. Now, last night I did the Factory Hard reset (P+V-DN keys), it went fine, except the data was erased which I never wanted to be backed up though I was haunting of loosing the Sim Lock, but all went fine. I have my registration on HTCDEV too, and the process of obtaining the TOKENID should go without any hassles. Now in pursuant to your advise below, will it still be mandatory to unlock the bootloader ? or I may follow the process of wipe/data and then immediately flash the BB's Rom ? Further, I stand corrected that all the function tests are passed normally, it was my mistake of not placing the Handset on the plain surface while performing one of the test. Finally, why the model no in phone identity says 831C, and not M8 - May I request your views on this please? Thanking you once again for addressing, all you guys are rocking, I am here on this forum since 2008, and needless to say "A Proud Member" All my Best wishes to MEMBERS. With Regards K.B. Hi ssantos132, I found there is a SuperSU app preinstalled on my Handset, which prompts me to Grant access when I try to install some other apps from PS- goggle, is my device rooted, because I have found in this link (http://blog.laptopmag.com/root-htc-one-m8), wherein lastly the SuperSU app gets installed automatically. Pl. guide. Thanks
Yeah, it looks like you already have root. Try downloading a root checker app from the play store if you want to make sure.

Now my phone is just a toy to play with. I ll suggest you to stick with the rom you are having right now, Take a nandroid backup of the rom, radio and everything else. and keep it safe for future. You will never be able to find them online for this particular phone. If you would like to help me solve my phone's issue, Please upload the radio. I assume these devices are development only devices which don't run a final version of software. I have noticed that most of the issues in the phone are software related. Using my development expertise, I was able to fix most of the problems and upgrade the firmware to Lollipop, however I have messed up the radio and was unable to restore the radio firmware to anything that actually works (This phones come with a radio version that can't be obtained from any online source). If you can provide the radio image from your device, I will prepare a flashable zip to upgrade the firmware to Lollipop which would include the modem you provide, along with instructions on how to unlock the device and flash it to get going. Probably this would iron out the issues that you are facing with your device. To grab the radio image from your device, use the following command from "adb shell" or Terminal Emulator Code: $ su # dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p20 of=/sdcard/radio.img You will find a file in the sdcard (Internal) named radio.img. Please upload it and provide me with a link. I would advice you not to make any changes to the device until I provide you with clear instructions on how to do so. Trust me, I really had a hard time with this phone.
Well thanks indeed for the time you took for replying, Sir are you from India Since the name sounds such ? Secondly, I am desperately looking to upgrade the Software to Latest 5.02 Lollipop from present Kitkat, my basic requirement is that any ROM to which I flash should at least contain the Stock FM Radio, wherein it should be able to tune in the Indian Radio Station. Confusing issues which keep me scratching my head is that I have pre installed SuperSU app in it. Also I re checked it via installing the app Root Checker which indicated that my device is Rooted. However as and when I tried my device to restart it in Recovery mode it starts normally after a while , the SuperSU app is not getting started. Can you help me through please. Hi, first I want state that I am not a dev, so I want to thank all the devs out there for making things possible for us reg users. I am running TWRP v2.5.0.0, rooted. HTC One M7 (AT&T) Android 4.1.2 HTC Sense 5.0 Software # 1.26.502.15 HTC SDK API level 5.12 (currently backed up incase I brick) I have 2 things I am seeking to solve. Any comments/feed back is greatly appreciated. If you provide me the steps that would make it easier. 1) updating app issue. I am having an issue with updating apps. my HTC one M7 keeps telling me I don't have enough storage space. I checked i have total of 32 gigs cap with 18 gigs used. I cleared my delvik/cache already. Every time i try to update google maps or youtube or anything, keeps bringing me to manage apps to uninstall to free up space 2) How to get rid of AT&T bloatware that is pre installed? (not too important issue, but wanted to know) I use Titanium back up to uninstall hem, but they show up after refresh. Seems to be part of the phone and can't get rid of them. If there is a rom out there without the bloatware, please link me to it and I will recover using twrp.
