Boot problem - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to help my friend out with his kindle, for some reason this thing will only boot if its plugged into the outlet. When its unhooked it just boot loops, and when I try and connect it to the computer it boot loops. It's stock and at this point I am not sure what I can even do.

If it will boot up fully then tell me if you unplug it does it shut of instantly? I'm wondering if the battery is bad, if this is a kindle 7" hd 2012 model (has the front facing camera) then you can always root it and reboot into fastboot and attempt a restore via kindle fire first aid or system restore tool. The 2013 has a bit of a different utility for the procedure and could require a fastboot cable depending on the os version. You can also tell what year the kindle is by its os version, 7.x.x = 2012 and 11.x.x = 2013, 8.x.x= 8.9 2012 hd, etc.

Yeah as soon as I unplug it the thing shuts off, and it does say its charging.. and for version its the 7.4.8_user4849020 and he said its a couple years old, and it has the front facing cam

Ok it sounds like something could be up with the battery, a wall charger has more output than a pc so a kindle can't run off the low power of the pc, I'm guessing bad battery, but that could be a problem to check it if it doesn't have root already because I think the sensors that you can query the battery from in a terminal require root. The kindle's internal battery is replaceable, not too difficult to replace, I believe you need a star head screw driver and it's glued but other than that it's pretty simple.

Why would the battery cause a boot loop though?

You need a small Phillips screwdriver and a Torx T5, to be exact. You have to slide one of the speaker wires out of the way to be able to access one of the screws as well.

Well because the device is too low to stay on with a low power charger so the initial detection of power from plugging it in while off tells it to turn on but once it realizes how low the battery is it shuts off, then it repeats the process because it is plugged in still. Least that's my guess.

Okay I should have said that when it does power on it says the battery is on 55%

Interesting... still think it's a battery issue. If its reporting the wrong value because the battery is worn it would make sense.

Pull the battery and check the connector and see if it loose. I have seen just this situation after a tablet is dropped. It very well could be the actual battery too.

I'd try leaving it to charge overnight, or charge it when it's powered off. You can also try with another battery to see if that might be an issue.
I have 2 chargers that fit one of them lets it charge while its off the other one turns it on and it stays in bootloader mode i cant turn it off without unplugging it which one should I use?

1.Buy a new battery and chrage it with ???.(i don't know how to spell it,however you can use that to charge your battery with out phone. Sorry, i'm not a native speaker.)
2. Put it in your phone, you can boot again and see a big white cut "M". That mean it works, so you should take out the battery and reboot again into Recovery or OpenRecovery to reinstall your rom or use your backup.

You can cut open a USB cable and attach to the battery, this will fool the milestone into thinking the battery is full and let you flash.

The Milestone will not charge when in Bootloader or Recoverymode.
thanks but I got the battery in the mail and it was 50% full according to my freinds droid (my old battery was dead and it couldnt hold a 100 percent charge for more than 3 minutes but this new battery is good and it let me use rsdlite and now I basically got a droid for $5

[Q] Very Serious problem, i beg your replies. (Can't turn on and charge)

Hi, I am a user of velicty 4g from HK. (My English is really rubbish, sorry)
As shown in the title, my phone is dead suddenly when i was listening to music.
The following conditions are given.
Phone: Velocity 4g
Rom: Borken Rom Sense 4.1 ver.3.6 (Android 4.0.4)
The phone usually go out suddenly(about one-two time per day), it could be restarted by resetting the battery, but this time cannot.
Phone won't charge neither no orange light shown and the button won't vibrate when pressing it.
The monitor is on and give a black screen if I take out sim card and sd card.
The monitor is also on with a black screen if I charge the phone without battery.
Won't get into recovery nor bootloader.
Won't detected by computer when linked with the USB cable
I prefer not to have warrenty because i had it just 2 weeks ago due to the broken monitor glass....(HKD1300! I don't want to pay anymore!)
no one reply? wtf....?

Have you tried a different USB cable or charger? If the phone is not charging and you have tried a different battery (do you have an external charger for the battery) you might be at the end of your luck. Basic logical troubleshooting, start with power (battery, charger, outlet) and expand from there. If you have tried changing the battery but the battery was dead or your charger is faulty you could still have no power. Do you have a friend with the same phone, maybe have them loan you their battery.
Thank you!

And finally HTC said the warrenty fee is HKD2060 (I bought this phone with HKD3000). I think i would buy a new one. (i won't buy htc again because it is very hard to buy accessories and the warrenty fee is too harsh for me.)

[Q] When phone is off charging battery has question mark

I've had this phone for about two weeks now (I bought it used). When I got the phone the battery lasted pretty much all day for about 4-5 days. Then I pretty much started having charging issues. When the phone would fully die it would lock up. Sometimes when the phone had 80% battery it would lock up and stay that way for about 30-60 seconds. It would then reboot possibly lock up on boot for another 30-60 seconds, then if it did come on the battery would have an explanation mark telling you it needed to be charged. Now sometimes when you go to charge the phone it would turn on but have a question mark inside of the battery instead of where the colors are while it's charging and off.
I tried to purchase a battery locally and replace it. This battery does the same thing. The phone will boot for a bit, charge, then shut off. When I go into fastboot mode it says 'battery low'. When I got the phone and started having problems it was still stock everything, no root. Now I am running Youngunn's HoloBlur performance edition and the battery I tried to replace it with is an EB40.
The questions I really have are this.
1- When a battery is bad does it cause the '?' mark
2- Does the EB40 have to be calibrated some how, or does the ROM just pretty much know what's up
I don't really want to drop another $50 into a battery if that doesn't the issue. However in my past experience and knowledge of electronics and phones it seems to be the battery.
Thanks in advance!

I can't really get that far into the phone. After I get the phone booted it says low batt then goes through the power down process
Update: After reading a few threads on this site and others I've heard them all talking about using the OEM charger. I was using the USB brick I use for my Samsung tablet 5v 2a. I've just found a moto charger at my house which is 5v 550ma and the charging meter is now going up.
Thank you for searching guy.

You're welcome man!
I took the battery that I purchased back and ordered a new one off Amazon. I put my old battery back in the phone and left it alone. After the phone charged for two hours it said it was at 25%. I booted the phone up got about five mins of use out of it and it locked again and wouldn't turn back on. When the phone isnt on and just charging, does it use the ROM to display the battery charging meter?
Here's another update.. I got the new battery in and put it in the phone. I tried to power it up just to see if it had a charge and it displayed the unlocked bootloader logo and shut back off. I then tried to plug it into, still nothing. I eventually got the green light on the top to show up. At first it was blinking, then it went solid with a very small blink. After that, still nothing.
I have tried using a 5v 500ma, 5v 1a, and 5v 2a charger and still nothing. Does anyone have any ideas?
You used the stock moto charger?

I went to ATT and tried to get the OEM charger from them but they said they didn't have one. They were trying to use a 5v 1a usb cord with a block on the end. The only actual Motorola charger I have is what I got when I had my Atrix 4G. It's a 5v 500ma...
What is the voltage / amperage on the OEM charger?

I have never used the original Moto USB charger. I usually use anything that was convenient and that includes my, laptop, desktop, HTC, LG, and Samsung USB chargers.
Same here. With any of my devices for that matter. Usually the phone can dumb it down or just not charge.

And sometimes that's fine but If it won't charge first thing to try is the factory charger to rule that out.

After going up to the ATT store and getting them to try multiple adapters it still isn't working. I have noticed that when you plug it into the computer it recognizes the phone.. To what extent I have no idea (since I only plugged it in for a minute at the store). There are also times when you plug it in and the green light will be flashing, and other times the light will be solid.
Like I said this is straight puzzling. The phone worked fine for a few days with no issues. It seems like it got wet but there's no way it could have.

This is a hoax. Battery calibration is not real (Words from a google/android employee). All these apps do is maybe clean up the battery statistics so android builds new ones (which it does by itself in the long run anyways). This process has nothing to do with the actual battery/hardware.
That's all they're meant to do. Wipe the stats so it will get a correct reading.
Sent from my PACMAN MATRIX HD MAXX
Did you solved it?
I had the same issue ..couldnt fine a workaround uptill now
*facepalm
Solution:
1.Take out your battery.
2.See those contacts between the terminals? Yes, they're the battery sensors. If they're not in contact with the base plates on the phone board, do something about it. I don't know what, you decide.
3.get some naked wire and create your own screw washers, for the terminals. Screw them under the screw, between the battery board and base screw holes.
4.Tighten properly.
Done.
Now, try again till the charger accepts that your battery is existent.
You are welcome.

As mentioned, leave charging as long as possible. Hours since it can depend on your Kindle OS version (eg 7.X.X), and not all Kindles are the same believe it or not. Then plug it in your computer with the fastboot cable, if "Fastboot" appears on your screen, your in fastboot mode, move on to recovering it. Don't mean to get you panicked on this last part, but not all "fastboot/factory cables" put you into fastboot mode, unless it was declared in the description it works on KF. Good luck though.

Let me/us know if it at some point at least boots with the Kindle Fire logo so the recovering step can be initiated.

Fire 5th Gen: Cheap case, how to know when it's finished charging (when turned off)

1) When it's turned off, how do I know when it finishes charging? There is no indicator.
Is the only way to check to keep turning it on? If it's supposed to be like that is there anything I can do to change it? Keeping it on while charging would obviously make it a longer process.
I haven't rooted it, just installed the play store.
2) I'm hoping somebody might be able to let me know if the following case will fit it (it mentions 'kindle fire' compatible) but don't know if it will fit 5th gen?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal...hash=item1a07be93f3:m:mKZ65rrArSBKW9DFz_cR09g
If that wouldn't fit, what is the cheapest available case? Thanks

Interesting. My included cable is extremely tight. Even unplugging it requires excessive force. Not using it to avoid stressing the port.

Given the design I think it would, but the clips look like they might block the headphone socket, though they might miss and be continually rubbing the power button instead.
Note that this isn't a Kindle Fire by name just Amazon Fire 7. The sizes aren't vastly different, 190 x 120 x 11.4 mm old one, 191 x 115 x 10.6 mm this one so it should fit in. In a more fitted case it might be a bit loose though.
Ones designed for it, in ascending price.
