Moto X "SIM from unknown source" - Moto X Q&A

XDA, I've been searching the depths of the interwebz for the past few days trying to find a solution to my problem. The problem being;
My VZW Moto X spits out a "This SIM is from an unknown source" error, followed by "Restricted Access Changed" scrolling across my notification bar when inserting my MetroPCS SIM. I've tried manually selecting the network, and it refuses to connect. I've also tried entering my APN setting manually, but to no avail. So, you guys have any ideas?
I'd post a screenshot in-line, but XDA is being a pain because of my low post count, so check the attachments.

This is slightly unrelated, but I notice your Caller Name ID has expired....
Might I suggest you check out the "Current Caller ID" app. It is published by WhitePages, has similar functionality, and is free.

SIM is from an unknown source when using a non-VZW sim has started happening since flashing 4.4 on my X. It happens on my Galaxy S4 too. I haven't tried on my GS5.
I no of know way around it.
For Metro PCS, at one time they were a CDMA carrier like Verizon. Do they use CDMA in your area still, or are they now GSM only? If they use GSM only, your APN settings must be EXACTLY correct for them to work. If they still use CDMA, then there are some underlying CDMA/EVDO settings on your phone that will likely need to be changed. I know I saw some threads about using QPST and other tools to make edits for other CDMA carriers, but I've not seen it for MPCS.

SIM Unlock Code Screen Missing

Hi All,
I apologize in advance if that has been posted and responded to, but my searches have been unfruitful. My boss has the Motorola Droid 3, stock rom, NOT rooted on the Verizon network (in NYC). He will be traveling abroad to the mid-east and contacted VZW Global Services and they provided him with the SIM Unlock code.
I then proceeded to insert my AT&T SIM card into his phone and booted it up - in anticipation of the SIM Unlock Code screen so that when he gets to his destination country, all he'll have to do is insert the SIM card which he will purchase there.
Unfortunately, no such screen appeared. I was able to access the phone's other functions and was even able to go into Settings>Wireless Settings and switched the device to GSM/UMTS only (from the default 'Global' setting). Still, nothing occurred. I then forced it to search for a network (even though automatically connect was checked) and believe it or not, midway through its search, the phone completely rebooted on its own. I thought that maybe NOW, when the phone finishes loading, that it will ask me for the SIM Unlock Code. Well, it didn't. The phone just booted up normally and indicated that there was no service (bars with the red circle and slash through it).
We called Global Services back and they claimed that we will not see a SIM Unlock code for any US-Domestic carrier SIM cards (sounds fishy to me) and the SIM Unlock Code screen will appear ONLY when a Foreign/Non-US Carrier SIM Card is placed in the phone. My suspicion is that the Global Services rep doesn't know the difference b/t his a** and his elbow and was just saying anything that seemed plausible to get me off the phone. It would be VERY BAD if my boss travels to his destination and operates on the assumption that this will work once he inserts a foreign SIM card and for it not to work at all.
Any thoughts/insights into this would be VERY much appreciated and if this topic was already discussed on another thread, I would very much appreciate the link to that thread.
I have seen similar topics on other phone model threads, but none of the instructions in each of those respective threads had a solution that seemed applicable to this specific problem.
Many MANY thanks in advance!

You should most certainly see an unlock screen with a US based sim card. I used an old deactivated T-Mobile Sim card to get my unlock code prompt. try going to the phone dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#* - give it a sec and a menu will come up. In the menu scroll down a bit and you'll see a network selection bar. Tap the bar and select GSM Auto (PRL). You should immediately get a popup or perhapse after you back out of it. If not, scan for networks again. If it still gives you problems - PM me and we'll get it figured out.
network SIM unlock screen missing for T-Mobile US
Folks,
I am experiencing a similar issue as the original poster. No matter what I do, I can not get the Droid global (stock rom, v2.3.3) to attach to the T-Mobile network. If I follow the instructions"
*#*#4636#*#* - give it a sec and a menu will come up. In the menu scroll down a bit and you'll see a network selection bar. Tap the bar and select GSM Auto (PRL) ".
I see the screen momentarily flash the t-mobile network, then switch back to indicating that the network type is CMDA-1xrtt. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
BTW this sim works fine in a BB Bold 9000. Also it is just a simple voice/messaging sim - no data plan.
Never mind - after more research, seems I have a phone with the US carriers locked out. - off to see if I can update it

I had the same issue. The unlock code was already put in. Though this may be, there is more you need to do to have it working on US carriers like AT&T.
The guide is here

I c, U have to use Non-US SIM CARD. otherwise U have to unlock the US radio first. but if U having trouble to pop the SIM Network Unlock Code screen, just put non-US SIM and set the mobile network from global to gsm/umts. these also apply to those whose troubled with subsidy lock, so they can input the code.
Worked for me with tmobile or att sim card in the phone. You have to backup rename the build.prop file in the system(Rename the old build.prop to build.bak) put the new build.prob file in the system, restart the phone and wa-la, it will ask you for an unlock code. Enter it give it 15 or so sec reboot the phone, select GSM/UMTS and wait 30sec to 2mins you will receive a signal.

[Q] Droid Bionic HW C on T-Mobile

I've looked through al the other threads on the topic, and I seem to be better off because I have a Bionic HW C that I can actually use my t-mobile service with. But I can only connect to an at&t network so I'm roaming. If I go into mobile networks and switch to 2G only, and reboot I'll have an orange triangle in the notification bar. The message is:
No Service
Selected network (T-Mobile) unavailable
When I goto the program menu/ test mode (or whatever), hit next twice to get to the field test screen, there's a message immediately at the bottom which says "Network mode: got out of range value". I can't get it to pick up T-Mobile during the test, but I do see it time to time when I search for networks in the "mobile networks" in settings but can never connect. Has anybody determined the differences between HW A phones and later versions, as people with the first version seem to have no problem getting a T-Mobile sim to work. What are nv items 4869-4872? The last two have values and the first two are blank. Looking into what carrier suppression is I don't think the first two should be blank. In fact when looking at the nv list in winhex it list those two as "inactive", while the other two say "ok". Also when looking at the sim information returned by a number of sim info apps, all of them have the "network operator name" field blank, although network operator id shows correct value of 310-260. Mobile network search also shows this id for t-mobile when I can get it to see t-mobile. Has anyone got any further than this with getting later versions of the bionic working on t-mobile? Also does anyone know how to get to the hidden motorola gsm menu or any other hidden menus?
Seems like I've seen somewhere that HW A also operated on 1700 band too. Can anyone confirm this difference?

No Unlock Menu Pops Up

I bought a US Cellular Moto X off of Ebay. I unlocked the Moto X successfully since I receive the message each time I turn on my phone but no unlock menu popped open.
I have the correct T-Mobile SIM card, I am able to search the internet but I can't make calls, receive calls, and the same for texts. When I call, I receive the welcome to verizon wireless message and the texts do not go through.
Please help.

If you go to the main settings menu, then under Wireless & Networks, select More... and in the new screen that pops up, select Mobile networks, then Access Point Names, you'll have to find the APN settings for your carrier and add them manually if they don't show up when your SIM is inserted.

There is a way to access the APN list using a hidden programming menu. I don't know if the dialer shortcut will work on the version you have, but to try it, dial ##7764726 if it works and asks for a password, use 000000
One of the options should be APN controls. Hopefully T-Mobile US will be one of the APNs.
Is it possible that there might be a problem with your SIM card since some features work and others dont?

I'll try that.
It's US Cellular phone but I use T-Mobile SIM card, it was a brand new sim card. When I dailed, I kept getting "Welcome to Verizon Wireless"
Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes in a few hours.
According to US Cellular's webs site, their device supports CDMA/EVDO, since you are trying to use it on T-Mobile, you'll need to manually switch the phone to GSM/UMTS mode, or Global Mode. (App drawer -> Settings icon -> (under Wireless & Networks) More... -> Mobile Networks -> Network Mode).
While in there under Mobile Networks, you'll also need to tap on Access Point Names... If the APN settings came down automaticlly from T-Mobile you need to select it. If no entry for T-Mobile exists, you'll need to find the settings and create one. (Google found them when I looked) NOTE: with Android JB 4.2.2 on my Verizon X (XT1060, also supports CDMA/EVDO in addition to LTE and GSM), the APN settings came down automatically. After upgrading to KitKat 4.4, I had to manually enter them.
When I setup my Verizon X for use with my T-Mobile SIM, I couldn't get MMS working for some reason, even though I was using the same APN settings as my T-Mobile Galaxy S3.
Also, keep in mind that T-Mobile uses 1700/2100 AWS for their HSPA+. As far as I know, only the T-Mobile version and GSM Developer edition supports this band, so you might not get "4G HSPA/HSPA+" with your X even after setting it up correctly. If you are lucky, and are in one of the areas where T-Mobile has completed re-farming their spectrum, you will get H+.
Good luck.

Based on that screen shot, your preferred network mode is still set to LTE/CDMA... that is wrong for T-Mobile. (SEE POST #12 of this thread!!) You want it to be GSM/UMTS or GLOBAL!! And you want to have the boxes checked for Data Enabled and Data Roaming.
You do not have options for Global Data Roaming Access and Access Point Names which I have on my Verizon Moto X, so that makes me question a few things....
In the first post you say you successfully unlocked your phone.. do you mean SIM Unlocked, or BootLoader Unlocked??
Also in the first post you mention seeing a message each time you reboot.. What exactly does the message say?
I ask because if you unlocked the boot loader, your phone could still be SIM locked and therefore not recognizing the T-Mobile SIM properly, and not giving you the Global options and APN options needed for GSM mode.

It is BootLoader Unlocked not SIM unlocked.

Yes, if not SIM unlocked, you're stuck. You need to get it SIM UNLOCKED.
Take a look at this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2422854 apparently some are using cellunlocker [.net] to get their X SIM unlocked, although they don't have US Cellular listed when I picked MOTO X from their list, so you might have to pick "Unknown" or "not listed" for the carrier.

[Q] Network Issues

Hi guys,
I'm having network connection problems I recently purchased my RAZR I, was informed it was unlocked,
however when I insert my 3 sim, I get the message " Cannot connect to network at this time, please try again later" !
The phone doesn't display any sim error messages, I've purchased a 16 digit unlock code, in case its locked,
but am unable to enter it into the phone as no error screens pop up, I've tried android codes which are
supposed to "call" the "enter code"scene, but without success.
I can't find a working code for the "engineer mode" either....
I've changed radio mode to "gsm only" (I'm in the UK)...
I've rebooted, factory reset....etc etc
Phone info screen states... Network unconnected
GPRS. off
I'm at a loss... How do I remove the "little red triangle", emergency calls only & connect to a network so I can use the phone.

Which software is installed?
Which provider do you try to use?
Is the sim card working in an other phone?
If you manually search for a network, do you get any choice?
Phone is running stock ROM ... Jelly bean.
I'm trying to use my Three Network sim which works fine in other phones.
I've manually searched networks... Results show 3, Vodophone, o2 & Orange... Selecting 3 brings up same "cannot connect at this time...." message.
I've checked APN settings, they're as they should be !
Thanks for quick response...

Which exact software is running? Please the full image string.
That would show for which country/continent the phone is setup. Maybe you also just need to call Three Network and ask if they see some error on their side.
Stats are as follows...
System version
91.2.29001.XT890.Retail.in.GB
Android
4.1.2
Kernel version
3.0.34-g261995f
[email protected]))
Build number
9.8.21-50_SMI-29.1359955748
As the phone won't register on the network, Three are unable to test the connection ! Plus my sim works in all my other phones.
The RAZR I is reading the sim as my contacts import to the phone, so I don't think the sim jacket is at fault either....
Hope this helps...

Oh ! I've also checked the IMEI number online & as far as I can tell its not blocked...
Come on guys any ideas.....
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
No idea now. It could be a broken phone or a broken sim. Maybe one metal contact on the SIM is broken, or something like that.
I've been in touch with Motorola, there answer is a factory reset.... I've tried a few sims and all are recognised ( the associated APN loads every time...) but still no network connection. I've also checked the antenna connections to ensure contact is being made....
Could this be a software issue? The phone is rooted, can I use ADB to alter IMEI ?
Thanks in advance...

[Q] [Help] XT1060 Radio not working after 4.4.4 OTA

Hello
I am in a great trouble and would really appreciates if someone can help me out here
I live outside U.S and I bought XT1060 verizon Moto X yesterday. The retailer put my GSM sim inside phone and it worked fine without any errors. Voice, sms and gprs was working fine. Phone was 4.4.2 Kitkat stock rom.
Last night i went to settings > about > system update. and there i found that an update is available for 4.4.4. I downloaded the update and installed it successfully without any error. Now my phone is working like before but it can not register my cellular network anymore :crying: No voice no sms no data.
It sometimes grabs the signals and then drops and sometimes shows full signal bars with "No Service" network settings.
I have tried UMTS/GSM mode and Global mode but no use. With global version it shows some 5 digit number on cellular icon in notification area.
Please somebody tells me if Verizon version is sim-lock free then why i am having this issue?

Due to the FCC rules around the 700mhz C block auction in the USA which Verizon won, they do not SIM lock their LTE phones. And the 4.4.4 OTA on the XT1060 definitely did not SIM luck the X.
Please make sure that your APN settings on your phone are still set correctly for your carrier. If they are not, your phone will not work.
While in many cases the APN settings come down automatically from the carrier, sometimes the phone relies on a table file that is part of the ROM itself instead. If the settings don't come down automatically, and the table got changed (either settings for your carrier were removed, or are no longer correct for your carrier in the 4.4.4 update), you must manually enter them to have working services.
You will have to check with your carrier what the correct APN settings are, and check them against your phone, or visit the GSM Retailer where you got your SIM, and ask them to check it.

Which table file of ROM your'e talking about ? How do i know that my carrier is already listed in that table and how to edit that table since my phone is not rooted even.
For an update, i went a retailer and there was a guy who took my phone and did the trick and my phone gets the sim registered for Voice and data (3G). I couldn't see him doing the magic but definately he didn't rooted the phone neither he crooks the ROM every thing was in its place when i get my phone back.
So wondering what he might have changed after which phone started working normal.

If you are rooted, take a look at -> /system/etc/apns-conf.xml
That being said, you don't need to be rooted to MANUALLY enter APN settings via App Drawer -> Settings -> More..(under Wireless & Networks) -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names... But you do need the right values, and to enter them without any typographical errors.
