4.4.3 zombie apps draining battery - Moto X Q&A

Just got my Dev edition. Upgraded to 4.4.2 and after a while to 4.4.3
All seemed fine until i noticed that Google play books used 40% of the battery... Weird since i opened it, scrolled the list and closed... It wasn't even in the recent app list...
I killed it and added to the disable list (i use fbreader anyway)... Now today (second day with phone) the same happened with YouTube...
It used 30% of the battery. I watched a10s clip... App info said 10s foreground... 30 min background... And again, it wasn't even on the recent app list to be closed. Just went to apps and force closed.
Now I'm worried that this is a thing with everything Google (which honestly i can disable all but gmail and maps) or the OS...
Anyone getting the same? I'm not sure what to search for to find similar threads...
I'm guessing this is either common or i have a ducked device since i got it twice for the 2 days i have it...

Ugh that's really weird. If you're rooted it will be a lot easier to fix but for now reboot the phone and use it like that for another day. Sometimes the OS and apps need time to settle. For example I did a fresh flash two days ago and my Google services had a 1 hour and 13 minute wakelock yesterday where as today it's behaving very well. But YouTube doing that is weird. Never auto update your apps as 85% of updates are crap across the board. Try going to apps under settings and click uninstall updates for YouTube. This should revert YouTube to the version that came with 4.4.3, unless that's already the latest. But yeah for now try and "tickle" YouTube by logging out, wiping cache and data for it under settings/apps and log back in, see if it starts behaving. I'll monitor this thread to try and help.

Thanks. I did all that yesterday and rebooted. So far everything seems fine. So i think you're spot on. Tho it is a bad sign to have those bugs
The phone did lock up twice on me after that.
Once playing webm on chrome. But i just disabled it a while later. Firefox beta ftw! ( ff is the Only reason i have up my nexus one)
Another time when i inserted the Sim with the phone on and right away unlocked the slider... It froze mid slider animation. Think i hit some race condition there. Hopefully i won't be inserting sim cards all the time...
Overall i think i will be able to live with that phone. Now only if i could use nfc unlock with my assine employer email policy...

It may have happened again. It's reporting a widget (simple calendar) as using 15min of cpu with 4min of foreground time. I had opened its setting screen 15 min ago. After i liked it from the recent task list it stopped counting new cpu time. But it's still showing as the top battery user for now.
Since that setting screen has ads, i will just write this off as a sleazy ad library for now.

Nexus One never sleeping

I have tried searching the forums but have found nothing yet, so I was hoping someone could help me. I am currently using Enomther's rom, but this has happened on every rom I've tried (Desire, Cyan, etc.). My problem is the Nexus One is running 100% of the time. In comparison, the screen was on for 5.2% of the time. And I have definitely noticed the battery. Even if in standby, it loses 10-20% battery an hour. By the time I make it home from school, I have about 20% battery left, with almost no usage whatsoever. I've checked to see if it's any apps that won't close, but my highest used app was only a few minutes according to spare parts. Cpu usuage is barely visible as well in spare parts.

Looks like an application is holding the wake lock. Instant Messengers are good candidates for draining the battery. In my experience, Meebo loses connection frequently, and eBuddy has a mode to keep the connection, but it drains the battery very fast (AFAIR it has a mode that's easier on the battery by checking for messages every 15 minutes, but that's not all that instant anymore).
Good job you have AnyCut installed.
Use it to place a shortcut to the 'Testing' app (or dial *#*#4636#*#*), and use that to look at your battery history.
This will be able to confirim if your N1 is indeed staying awake, and if you use the 'partial wake usage' drop down box, it will tell you what's keeping it that way.
For partial wake usage, the only thing that pops out Android System which has a full bar. Nothing else is above a sliver.
Since you have titanium backup, why not make a backup, completely wipe your phone, and see if the problem persists? Then, add components at a time and see when the problem reappears. ie ROM -> a few apps -> a few apps -> etc. This will narrow down your search and hopefully pinpoint the problem.
You also might wanna look at logcat (e.g. via aLogCat), sometimes there are a lot of messages of runaway applications.
Here's my logcat

No spare parts?
Downlaod it and try setting the end button behavious to go to sleep.
Seems like an obvious thing, but its worth a shot if you haven't already tried it.

Yep, of course I have spare parts. I set that, but what exactly is the end button?
Edit* I've uninstalled every app on my phone, and yet the problem still persists. Running 100% of the time. What the heck is wrong with my phone?

I think your best bet us to just wipe everything, and reinstall the rom. That should get things going smoothly.
do you have trackball succession mod? that may be the reason.

No, but I did have trackball wake enabled. Would that matter? Also, I've installed Cyan and the problem seems to be gone, although battery still isn't great :/
I would figure that trackball wake will keep waking your phone when you accidentally hit the trackball when the phone is in your pocket or bags?

One thing to check that I've run in to twice (unfortunately) is constant "syncing" of email. I only noticed it because the email app constantly showed the syncing circle (not in the notification bar, in the app). Clearning the storage/settings for email cleared it up, but it took a few days to find out what was causing it to never sleep.

Yes but my phones running 100% of the time and my screens running 1/20 of that time. Surely my screen on time would increase as well? As well I'm sitting in class half the day and know for sure that I'm not hitting the trackball.

Thanks, I'm going to look into this. Would this correspond to UID 10014 or Media having extremely high network usage as well? I just noticed these two things constantly have full network usage bars but don't know exactly what either are. How would I clear the settings/storage? I'm using a Desire Rom now if it matters.

[Q] Excessive 'system traffic'

I have an HTC One, it's not rooted, so running all standard OS apps/settings etc.
I've been monitoring my usage due to restrictions on my data plan more than anything, and have been using the reasonably popular app "Traffic Monitor".
I'm finding I'm getting large amounts of 'system traffic', it isn't broken down any further than that. It's not push mail or fb traffic etc, that is all recorded separately
I'm talking between 50-100Mb of 'system traffic' a day while on wifi. Sometimes I get random bursts of ~70Mb over a 2 hour period.
Any thoughts on what this is or how to reduce it?
Extra info
On my work wifi I don't have the proxy configured, so the only thing it can access is the work mail server and most things google. That works fine for me given I use gmail and don't have a need for anything else on my phone while at work, but I still get this usage which (in my mind) and confirmed via packet inspection, tells me it is all 'google based' traffic.
My wife has an HTC One X + and it similarly accumulates a lot of system traffic but about 1/5-1/6th the amount my One does...
I went through and disabled all apps I have downloaded, turned off auto sync and htc error reporting, location services yada yada and it still seems to just carry on at about 1-5Kb every few seconds (so 60Kb odd per minute and a couple of Mb an hour - approximately speaking).
I have unlimited internet at home so it's not a major just seems really odd and excessive.
Don't know about you but I used chompsms and it was connecting like crazy.

Ah, I do use chompsms (and my wife doesn't). Will have a look at that!
Interesting, I just re-enabled dropbox and signed in, it synced my photos over the last few days using about 50Mb in say 3-4 minutes, in that same period my phone used 5Mb of 'system traffic'. I don't mean this in a paranoid way at all, but it's like it's reporting every bit of activity somewhere continuously. The system traffic is excessive in it's own right, but it also seems to be vastly inflated when other things are running...
I don't even know what an expected or adequate or minimal level of this system traffic would be.
Contemplating a full restore to factory and only installing the traffic monitor app to see how much it uses completely stock... Shouldn't have to faff around this much though :/
Will look into chomp and report back.
Maybe you should install betterbatterystats and see exactly what is sending all of this data.
Found out that there's are some HTC stock apps sending data, and I can't seem to find which ones are doing it. But that's ok add I guess it's related to meteo, blinkfeed, or global notifications system.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
It's not blinkfeed is it?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Thanks guys. After removing chompsms it still seemed to be accumulating 'system traffic'. I completely reset my phone and monitored it for half a day. It was far less, as in negligible. Have slowly reinstalled apps and it is increasing with each app install but it's still not at the level it was.
I have noticed it is definitely proportional to the other traffic being used. When I re set up dropbox and pulled down my photos (back to my blanked phone) it used about 1.5gb of dropbox traffic over say an hour or so, and the 'system traffic' for that period was about 120Mb. Once the download had stopped, the system traffic went back to being almost negligible.
I don't believe it is blinkfeed, as when I'm at work (with no proxy set) it wouldn't be able to pull in 99% of the blinkfeed content (no fb posts, no twitter etc).
I'm not that worried about it for myself, just think it's odd really.
So at the moment it is low again. And I'm slowly reinstalling apps and keeping an eye on it. I would like to get chompsms back on there.
I have purchased betterbatterystats, the trouble with that (and with the traffic monitor app) is so much of the 'google' and a bit of the 'htc' traffic/wakelocks are soo vague (IMO) but I'm not that technical tbf.
Hard to be sure exactly what it's tracking at at the moment given jumping on fb, web or emails inflates it (given this whole proportional thing noted) I can only really track it overnight for idle use, or during the time I'm sorting the kids and not on the phone etc.
Say it was rogue using 50-100Mb a day and I stay and a friend or families house on their wifi, and they have a 4gb plan not unlimited like myself, then I'd use a large chunk of their quota just with my phone idle in my pocket...
Not sure about that app but what you need to see is the traffic itself .. for example what sites or network are being connected to .. that might give a better idea of the issue at hand
As a XDA member you could have downloaded BBS for free I totally forgot to tell you that sorry

Not getting notifications

So prior to update i'm pretty sure i was not having this issue.
Now, i'm updated and have not been getting my notifications.
What i have done to see if the issue can be fixed
-reset my phone
-reset the watch
-factory reset watch
-re-install app
After i do some of the steps above it will work but then eventually goes back to the same ole crap of not working. I'm getting a little irritated....
Thoughts?
Nobody?

Try to uninstall any non Wear app, reset and see what it does "clean". I had similar problems any time I used none Wear stuff. It works OK now with only Instaweather and Battery Wear installed. Mini Wear Launcher seems particularly difficult [emoji19]
So are you saying that the mini wear launcher causes issues?
Possibly... Mine works fine without and other threads also mention that they have problems with it. With all the respect for the developers, everything before the 5.0.1 update were more or less hacks because Google never published a developer kit until a few days ago. They all have to update their apps now this kit is available.

Well, i think its a software issue so i am going to do process of elimination by starting to delete apps to see if one makes it stop.
Deleted:
-Rain Alarm: Still drops notifications
-Facer: Pending.......
I would proceed the other way around. Start clean to see if it's really a buggy apps that causes the fault. If yes then install one after the other to find the culprit...
I am now, nothing on it now. Gonna add something every 24 hours to see what happens.

Fingers crossed [emoji6]
Here should be the fix to this:
Go to your phone's settings, on my Nexus 6 there is a notification tab, you go to whatever your's is called, and find the checkbox to enable notifications to your android wear app. Hope this helps! Feel free to give me thanks.

All Google Now cards are gone except Weather

A couple of days ago, sometime after the latest Google app update, every single Google Now card except for the Weather stopped showing up. I have signed out and signed back in, I have reset my Nexus 6, nothing has worked.
One time, it showed "Places nearby" for a minute, but at the next refresh, that card also disappeared.
What causes a problem like this, and how can it be fixed?
Do you have your location settings turned on?
Yes I do.
Well I'm not sure... Are you on a custom ROM?
Fully stock, just rooted.
I saw several of my cards earlier today. No idea what triggered their re-appearance.
But they're all gone except weather again.
I had this problem, I had to go into my google settings in my desktop browser. Somewhere in there there was a place to disable divices from your account, I disabled several and it started working again after a little bit of time.

No, it was a place where I could deautorize devices.

I'm having trouble finding anything else like that...
I have had no luck with this problem...
I've noticed that I'm getting far fewer cards than normal the last few days. I get weather and "from around the web" and that's it.
I figured Google now has the sniffles.
^lol, sniffles
You think it's just a temporary glitch with the whole service, or what?
I think so, at least in my case. Agenda, local events, stocks, etc are back for me
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk
well they're still not back for me :\
Another week without the cards.
Anybody have any more ideas I can try? This is getting ridiculous...
Sometimes, when my phone suffers a random reboot, my cards will be back at the very start. But the next refresh of Google Now removes them again. Any ideas on that?
Ok no, I've tested it out. ANY reboot of my phone will give me an initial refresh where all my cards are back like it used to be EXCEPT for Weather. Then the very next refresh removes them all and adds back Weather by itself.
Why?
i am getting all of my cards on my nexus 6 but i am not able to see all of them on my LG watch urbane. I can only see the weather card. that's it.
Anyone Android wear user can help me?
Did anyone ever figure this out? none of my cards are showing up. its annoying.

Back Key/Button Not Working within Google Play app? Normal?

I've just noticed that the Back key/button does not work when I'm in the Google Play App.
I'm forced to use the arrow in the upper left corner since my Note 5 Back button is not working...
So far I've only noticed it not working within Google Play...
Just curious if this is normal? Or if something is going on with my phone...
(I never noticed this before because I normally go to the app store on the computer and install the apps on all my devices from there, but I happen to be out looking for a new app someone recommended and noticed the Back Key issue)
I've had this happen using Gmail.. I end up having to use the arrow in the upper left to return to the previous screen. Doesn't happen every time I use Gmail, but maybe 50% of the time. Usually, I have to kill the app totally, and restart Gmail and it's ok. No other app acts like this... I haven't used Google pay, so wouldn't know about that.

i suspect its some bug with Play store ... or some bug between Play and Note5
good luck

Its rather frustrating as the back arrow in the upper left corner is really far away from my thumb.

I'm experiencing it while in the Gmail app on my S6 Edge Plus (SM-G928V), dad has the Note 5, and has seen it too. Haven't noticed it in Play store, yet. However, not as often as 50%, more like 5%, but it's still happening after a couple weeks. Maybe it's a Samsung button issue??.. maybe not...since it's only Google Apps mostly?
i thought my phone was faulty until i read this thread..
yes.. same with my note 5 since day 1 .. happens intermittently for gmail app.. hopefully samsung will fix it in an update.
is this issue even on custom roms ??
Nope... The back button always works fine for me on the Play Store app and Gmail. 100% Stock except using Nova launcher.
