TF701 any negatives - Asus Transformer TF701

I am trading-in my TF700 for a TF701. Has anyone that has had theirs for a while found any negatives? If you had it to do over would you still get the TF701 or something else? If something else what would it be?

I've had some occasionally odd screen behavior. I had to send it back for repair because the phantom touches made it unusable.
Now once in a while an area near the edge might not respond. It's usually very minor.
Despite that I am very happy with it. There's more development going on so there are now four kitkat roms that I know of.
It's very fast. Apps, home screens (Nova) and menus don't hesitate. I'm coming from an Xperia tablet Z. We also have a nexus 7 and an lg g pad 8.3. All are good. I like this one best.
I also like the proprietary charging port. It's sturdier. On my Z the plug would get the slightest pressure and start to bend or fall out.

I have no problems at all! My first and best tablet so far I have it since last november!

Best tablet I ever used too! And it's got CROMi-X and CROMBi-kk on it as well - what more could you ask for?

I can see room for improvement in the software.
i mean for all devices anyway,
but improvements are coming every day from open source.
So we will see what exciting things are yet to come.

I had occasional issues such having to restart the tablet to have it download from the play store and the occasional lock up due to too many apps. Most of these issues were solved by sbdags and not by ASUS with CROMi-X. Depressed me I had to unlock my bootloader to get maximum functionality but it is what it is. I still love my tablet.

I'm in fairly the same situation as the OP right now. So, aside from the docking being loose (which can be fixed with a simple mod), most of the issues are software related and could be all cleared through a custom ROM?

Tf701 not on forum yet?

I was just wondering why the tf701 isn't added to the forum yet.
I have heard nothing about it over at xda, is it me or are people just not stoked to welcome this device?
This also makes me wonder on how development is going to be on this device..
i am wondering about exactly the same, since i have one already

Do you come from a tf700 as well? If so, how does the non-aluminum dock feel like : cheap, sturdy etc.
Oh and have you experienced any random reboots? I heard stories about that

Nope, didnt have any tablet before. the dock feels slightly cheap, but can be due to the light weight.
I've read about that reboot crash stuff aswell at amazon, but i did not experience such things so far, AND there is already a new firmware that fixes those problems (also written at amazon).
What i also like is that Asus already released the Bootloader unlocker, but since only have it since 4 days i want to wait until i do such things.
Negative points so far: No Vibration.
positive points so far: Battery, Floating Apps, not that much bloat ware.

Mods, please create a TF701 forum section plz

I'll be getting one of these beauties to replace my TF101

I was able to root my tf700t without unlocking bootloader, in fact i've customized it to a maximum level using only root.
So no rom flashing or anything.
Maybe that method will work on the tf701, but I highly doubt it cause its a new processor.
Still waiting for the new infinity to come to shops, it's available in webshops but I want to have a warranty at a store.
Can't wait to have it though

I received my TF701 yesterday. In the Netherlands it is already available in some webshops.
First impression:
- crystal clear screen (in one word: WOW)
- no lag of any sort: everything works great
- graphics on games as Beach Buggy Blitz are amazing! No lag of any sort, not even on the highest resolution etc.
- tablet itself has an aluminium cover (dark grey). It does not look purple like the prime. I like it, but that's a personal thing
- WiFi is excellent! Compared to the Transformer Prime, that is not a surprise. However, the TF701 detects the same signals as the 17" laptop, a desktop PC with a USB-wifidongle and a cellphone (Samsung Galaxy S3 mini) do.
- GPS is detecting satellites instantly
And now the cons:
- the dock is made of plastic and sounds plastic, al little cheap. Everything works as it should though...
- I tried to plug in a USB-stick: some force is needed (though I thinks that has to do with the stick, which is always in my pocket...
- at start up I tried the mousepad, it did not work instantly... After I plugged in a USB-stick, it worked splendidly (every time). It seems you have to 'activate' the mousepad
- I am desperately missing root... I'd like to put back my backups, but that doesn't work right now.
- the server to update firmware automaticly was down yesterday.

Thanks for informing me ^^
About that usb stick insertion thing, I had the same thing going on with my tf700 with any usb cable or stick. it's definitely the usb port I think.
You could try and root using motochopper or a CF auto root. This doesn't affect your bootloader what so ever so if it works, its great, and if it fails.. well it just fails then, no harm there at all
I have tried motorchopper and DebugfsRoot_Generic_v2.3. They both did not work: I have no root.
And for the record: I am NOT taking a risk of HARD-BRICK my brandnew device... So no flashing and downgrades for me the next 24 months...
True.
but tbh, i flashed the new firmware today cause i had a random reboot yesterday. So far the slight lags are gone, and no reboots, i'll keep on testing
The mousepad issue has been fixed in the latest firmware update and is working fine now on my TF701
I have mine since last week (Switzerland) and I am VERY happy with it! Eagerly waiting for the forum to discuss on XDA - and root of course!
I really have no complaints about the device until now. No reboots, no problem with dock and keyboard, fast like hell, long battery life and a superduper screen )) Every USB stick I tested worked fine and my 64 GB SanDisk microSD adds a looot of fast storage. Charges in under 3 hours, I love that!
It can easily stream 1080p MKV files from my NAS with BSPlayer without struggling... Comming from Galaxy Tab 10.1 (first version) it's an upgrade in every matter I can think of!
Can someone post up some pics of the device? I heard that the US will be it first week of Nov. I hope that is true.

There are loads of pictures online that can be found with google. If you want a picture of anything specific let me know.
^^ same here: I can make pictures etc. this afternoon. Same goes for testing: if you want something tested, let me know. I'll try it then.
Really looking forward to the TF701 - thanks for the info from those lucky enough to have one already. I've been waiting ages for this - but then haven't we all!
An upgrade for my TF101 is overdue.
Glad to hear random reboots appear to be not happening / or are being resolved with OTA upgrades.
Anyone know of availability in the UK?

[Q] Does the TF701t fix the TF201-problems?

I had the TF201 (Transformer Prime) when it was launched and although it was fast and with good battery life there were some major flaws ending in me returning the device. Does the TF701t suffer from any of the below problems that the TF201 had?
GPS practically non-existent
Wifi working only with strong signals
Freezes, especially when browsing
SD-card can't be inserted completely and is easy to lose
I'm thinking of buying this over the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 but am not sure if I really want to give Asus another try after the TF201 disaster.
Cheers

The TF701 has none of these problems.
In fact it is one of the fastest tablets out atm, there is just the keyboard disconnect problem to solve by Asus.

I have owned the 101, the700 and the 701. The 701is by far the best of the three. Dock problems are the fly in the ointment but, for me, the the dock and tablet have worked very well. Mine does occasionally disconect but that is the only problem I have had.
I'm about to get the TF701T myself. I've had the Prime since it launched and it is time to upgrade. From everything I've read and seen in reviews, none of the issues the plague Prime affect the 701 and that is very good. Asus has even addressed the I/O issue from the older models. I've been waiting to see if a new Nexus 10 is going to be released but nothing has been officially announced and the Asus tablets are the nearest thing to stock one can get.

Although there's dock issues and glass fitting issue or whatnot with the TF701, I'm still overall very happy with it because it fixed all these problems you mentioned, GPS and Wifi in particular are MUCH better and even perform better than even iPad 3. The extra RAM also makes it much easier to multitask, browsing is also much smoother. SD card has no accident of falling out so far due to the improved design of the body/slot.:good:
In my opinion, the TF701t has none of the problems you mentioned. The lag when browsing and wifi signal strength issues are practically non-existent. However, the dock has the connection problems which have been well described on this site, and I have experienced minor creaking in the tablet when applying torque to it. By this, I mean when I press down on one corner and push up on the diagonal corner from the other side, there is a slight sound. I have not personally experienced a screen lifting issue in conjunction with this sound. If the dock worked as intended, I would have very little to complain about this device.

upgrade from tf700?

Hello hello!
I own the tf700 and i really like it. Well, execpt the performance isn that good for me. Its a bit sluggish and laggy sometimes wich bothers me.
Will the tegra 4/the tf701 be a noticable upgrade in terms of performance?
Oh yes!!!!!!! [emoji122] [emoji106]

hello,
yes it is much faster.
having said that the overall finish and build quality is terrible and their after purchase warranty support is terrible.
please buy this from a physical store and test it well in store to make sure you get a good one is all the advice i can give you.
to list a few
pro
fast
great screen
more batt lif with dock
sd card and micro sd card for large space amounts.
usb 3 port for wireless mouse other devices.
cons
build quality
most countries dock have d/c issues and other issues like charge failures etc etc.
seems to be abandoned via asus considering they announced 4.4 for the padfones but left this device out of the list.
keyboard dock is made of plastic ???
when docked and upright it falls back as the plastic body of the dock can`t hold the device flat.
uncertain
stock software (is possibly stable, the screen still changes brightness too much for my liking) mine reboots a lot for no reason. however it`s away for it`s 4th trip to asus and they still refuse to replace it. so the rebooting could be related to my tab being one of the many fail devices out there.
i`m just being 100% honest here.
Please try it at a store as the idea is great and should be a top competitor against ipad and Samsung tabs but asus`s execution and build quality let it down.

[Q] Buyer Advise for TF701T

I've had a TF201 for a long time but it is now almost dead (smashed screen, dents, slowdown, random reboots).
The TF701T looks like the direct replacement but I suspect it won't get a production Lollipop update.
I am no stranger to flashing custom ROMs and would happily do so again but CM12 development doesn't look quite stable yet although the unofficial ROM in the dev threads looks promising
Question/Poll:
Get a TF701T for form factor and ignore lack of official Lollipop
Get a Nexus 9 with Keyboard and ignore price
Get something else (Asus X205TA Atom for example)
I love mine. With the dock it is basically a laptop replacement for me. Using CM12 as a daily driver with no issues, seems super stable to me.
I was considering a Nexus 9 but decided against it for 2 reasons:
1. no sd card and I use my tablet for a lot of textbook pdf's for school and also emulator roms
2. 4:3 screen and I like widescreen
The keyboard dock on the tf701 is sweet

Any idea if they are releasing a model for 2015? I can't find any news if there is a new release or this is the end of line for the transformer line
Slim-bacon
Another contender was announced yesterday at MWC 2015
Sony Z4 tablet with keyboard dock
I'm glad to see someone making a high end android device with a keyboard dock.

Interesting, although it seems to be a Bluetooth keyboard without an extra battery to charge the tablet, rather than a Transformer-style keyboard.
OP, I'm in the exact same market at the exact time

True question, but Asus products are all over the place these days. This particular tablet 701t should have been an absolute killer in sales, but it just didn't amount to much. After not such stellar sales on android, microsoft was right up their alley. The transformer tablet concept is just the best IMO. It definitely beats all Apple/Surface keyboard concepts I've seen. It makes sense for them to consider moving to windows. 2in1 windows devices seem to get a lot of help at least from microsoft and trying to push their way into small home office and hospital environments. Lot of that junk still running xp, so there is a big fat corporate market out there. As android goes, it's just too fickle on the high end to predict a standout winner.
Really too bad that asus didn't have a tf702-t or infinity-redux lined up for 2015. I'd be all over that, but no way I'm going to windows. Considering the Sony is waterproof and their android interface is nice and stock-like, I'm going to go for the z4 instead of the asus at this point. Definitely more expensive, but I want ac-wifi and waterproof anyway (not just perks, but things I wish Asus had)
As to battery life, looks like the z4 is reported to be in the 701t+dock territory all on it's own. Sure the dock will suck a little juice, but bt4-LE for keyboards is pretty efficient. I would be surprised if it drained more than an hour in a day. Maybe not, I'll buy it and see
Yep, even Asus's newer tablets like the TF103C no longer have a battery in the dock (although it connects physically rather than Bluetooth), so maybe that's the way things are going. And given how unreliable the dock connector is on the 701, maybe Bluetooth isn't such a bad idea!
I'm also very tempted by the Z4 tablet. I see it will be £499 in the UK, including the keyboard, though, which is a lot more than the 701 initially was priced at, I think.
I was wondering the price as well. Fortunately electronics don't ever seem to price at the transfer rate anyway. FWIW, I'd bet it launched within in $50 of that exact number of pounds rather than the equivalent exchange rate
I don't recall the price of the 701t at launch either. I thought it was something like $399 and no clue on the dock msrp
I think eventually we will see Asus come out with something big.
It may not be too soon. I think they learned their lesson about putting stuff out soon.
For a lot of what Asus makes quality is very important. But pushing out too many tablets too soon has reduced buyer confidence.
They will wait when they have a high spec device that smashes all other competition.
Yeah the tegra4 arrived ahead of the "pack" in the 701t. No reason to think they'll release yesterday's news with a k1 Denver. They seem to be in bed with Intel which is making progress, but compared to nvidia and Qualcomm. . . Intel feels like they are stuck in molasses. Lib-houdini was big, and a joint effort between Intel and Asus primarily (it seems, iirc) hopefully the lull is paving the way for something big and Intel will be aosp friendly
The TF701 will probably be getting official lollipop ROM according to semi-reliable rumors.
I have a TF701 and a TF103C.
If you don't need the higher specs of the 701 you will be happy just using the 103 and saving a bit of money. 103 screen resolution is just fine for normal everyday use, youtube etc. One thing I don't like about the 701 is that it runs kind of hot. On the back upper left where the Tegra CPU is. Battery life is not all that great either. The TF103C with it's Intel CPU does not have the heating issue and seems to be better on battery life. They changed the keyboard option on the 103C. It's a different part# that does not include a battery. So if you want to use the keyboard you will probably be better off with the 701.
One benefit of the keyboard change on the 103 is they moved the USB port to the side and just use a standard micro USB connector for that now. I don't use the keyboard option so one thing I really don't like about the 701 is that proprietary USB connector on the bottom designed for the keyboard. The case I use does not have a hole in the bottom so I cannot close it when charging. Could easily cut a hole I suppose. The other problem with that location is it's very very difficult to use it when plugged in. That connector at the bottom sticks out a ways and is fragile so it would't take much to break. The TF103C location is much better on the side and it's just micro USB that doesn't stick out too far so easier to use while plugged in and less likely to break.
You will be happy with either one I think and I'm pretty sure they will both get official lollipop. Can always use custom ROM lollipop which is available now for the 701.
get the tf701t and ignore the fact that there is no official lollipop yet. the inofficial cm12 is very good, I'm using it all the time. no problems till now

Are there any serious competitors to consider to the 701? I can get it with the dock for $295 from Amazon right now and unless I am missing something out there or coming out soon - there seems to be nothing even close to that price with this performance AND a keyboard without spending $500...
Am I missing something? I ask because looking at a birthday present to myself and want something that has a keyboard and is Android. I will mainly be using it with keyboard for web browsing as a "laptop", watching videos on trips, reading, and some gaming here and there but nothing major. Seems to be a MUCH better alternative and more flexible than the chromebook I was looking at.

need android wear on droid4, rom options?

It's boiling down to the last gasps for my Droid 4 on Verizon. I love the hardware keyboard and docking accessories. But lots of new apps and their updates are really pushing the limits of my beloved D4.
That and, on a lark, I picked up an LG android watch. I'd like to fiddle around with it a bit but Android Wear won't load on my D4.
I don't use the D4 for a lot. Google Maps, text SMS of course, the camera, and the Amazon apps (store, music, echo, kindle, etc). But MOST IMPORTANTLY, I use the tethering feature. I've got an older Verizon account that has unlimited data. I've used the D4 as a hotspot for ages and it's great. Being able to tether has lightened the load on the D4 as I use a Nexus 7 or other tablet for most other apps.
I really don't want to move up to keyboard-less phablet. I really do prefer the smaller form-factor of the D4 (and the D3 and D2 units I had before). I'd welcome advice on which of the newer phones would be a close second to the D4 size-wise.
So I'm wondering, out of all the custom ROMS out there, what's a good 'daily driver' that supports Android Wear and tethering as reliably as the stock ROM?
Well, the control service for it loads under CM12, and the app seems to run fine after it completely installs, but I don't have any devices to test it with.
Unfortunately, CM12 seems to still have a long-standing issue with tethering...reboots when it's turned off iirc.
A CM11/KitKat-based (4.4) ROM like SlimKat or such should work fine, there's a pretty good chance that you'll find proper Wear support there and it's still a better daily-driver at this point than CM12. I'm not sure if Google has fixed up the Play Services battery drain under KK like they did with Lollipop; if they have, then it's wins all around.
Unfortunately, I only have Cm12 installed at the moment to actually check, sorry. Were I given the choice, I'd check a KK-based ROM first, since again it's still faster/more reliable.
If you find the battery drain too bad and don't want to mess with disabling a couple dozen services to "fix" it, CM12 is decent to good with some minor tweaking.
I loaded the last CM11 build for maserati and, ugh, battery drain was brutally bad. Tethering worked out of the box, fwiw.
I'm going to punt and bail on the D4. I've already had one battery go bad. That wasn't unexpected, as I got several years out of it. But the replacement is starting to bulge only after 6 months. Granted, it's likely due to tethering through the phone (which REALLY heats it up).
I'm going to retire the D4 and give it to my broke-ass brother to upgrade his D3 (which was also mine, once upon a time). He doesn't do anything on the phone that'd require more than the stock ROM. That and he's entirely un-technical.
The replacement will be a Galaxy S6, as that's about the closest in size to my D4 without migrating up to one of those beastly phablets.
And tethering should be minimized by having ordered micro-SIMs for my Nexus 7 and iPad 4.
Yea, I've heard about the heat issue. Unfortunately there's no way around it, that I'm aware of...aside from opening the back up and letting the battery swing out slightly so the EMI shield can "breathe", anyway. Less than ideal.
Sorry to hear it didn't work out. I guess it's sort of better this way though, I remember stock being pretty quick and aside from not supporting the very newest apps, perfectly functional...someone who doesn't need any more than that should be quite happy with it.
Something to look out for: there've been some quiet rumors of the Droid 5 being a thing later on this year. I'd imagine it would be about the same size as what we have, perhaps a bit bigger/thinner, with more modern innards which weren't scrounged from the back of a warehouse somewhere. I haven't seen or heard anything substantial enough to suggest holding out for...just something to be aware of.
Edit: and looking now, I can't even find where I saw the above rumor. Definitely not worth holding out for.
Yeah, well, if/when the next slider releases I'll consider another upgrade. But until that unicorn arrives I'll be trying an S6.
You're correct, the last stock D4 firmware is reasonably decent, but does lack newer app features. Since he won't be pushing it he ought to be able to get some decent use out of it. If I don't sell it instead. He's got an annoying tendency to drop things and I'd hate to see the D4 get cracked.
I've found mine to be reasonably durable. The plates for the slider assembly add a ton of rigidity, so danger of glass breakage due to landing on a corner and the phone "twisting" should be minimal.
To protect the glass directly, you could grab him a Skinomi screen protector. It's made of a somewhat rubbery material, so above being pretty much scratch-proof - I think you'd literally have to use a knife or some other slicing/tearing point or edge under deliberate pressure to leave a permanent mark - it'll absorb some impact. Under $8 on ebay.
To protect the rest of the phone, it shouldn't be too hard to find a basic silicon stretch cover to wrap it in. I've heard that Verizon gave them away with the phones once upon a time.
Meanwhile the Verizon Content Transfer app won't pair between the D4 and S6 phones. Nor does their Cloud app. WTF?
