Hi,
I'm using CM10.2.1 on my ovation device and have noticed a significant slowdown/lag when rearranging (moving) app-icons on the home screen.
It depends on the number of icons that are displayed on the current page - when there are many icons, the slowdown is horrible.
My grid size is 8 rows x 5 columns.
If I check "Hide icon labels (Hide homescreen icon labels)" (Personalization->Home Screen->General), rearranging app-icons is very smooth with no slowdowns. So it has something to do with the label rendering?
What can I do to avoid the slowdowns without having to learn the app-icons by heart.

Yes, I tried that already. It makes no difference. If I enable "Show GPU overdraw", the icon labels are marked light red to red - no matter wether "force gpu rendering" is checked or not.
I also tried "Disable HW overlays" - this has no effect.
How many icons are needed for this to appear? I can add that many and see if I see the same thing.

With 6 Icons on one page, the difference is quite obvious.
If you add more icons, it will get worse. If you fill a 5 x 8 screen with icons, it's a real pain.
Strange my home screen has 20 things move around like butter

You'll probably find that its one (or more) app that's not playing nicely. I'd start by removing them one at a time until it reveals itself.
Just did a full wipe and clean install. Skipped everything possible - no wifi configured, no Google account, no restore from Google.
Then dragged some icons on home screen. Moving them around is now much better, but not as perfect as with icon labels switched off!
After that, I verified the grid size in the Trebuchet preferences - changed nothing, returned to home screen. Now some of the icons are not visible any more and some of them are outside the screen area.
I've got no idea what's going on here... Trebuchet perhaps is mixing up colums and lines sizes of the homescreen grid?
All I can think of to suggest at this point is:
Make certain your chosen CWM10.2 downloaed properly (or do it again).
Make certain you have the correct GApps package.
Make certain you installedd them with the correct version of CWM.
I'm assuming you followed the Guide for Dummies. It's pretty idiot resistant. After I create the bootable SD, I like to install just the EMMC version of CWM followed by the ROM. Then let the Nook boot all the way through. Go into settings and enable boot options, reboot into recovery and then install GApps. Reboot again, connect to WiFi and let everything update.
If that doesn't work, I'd suggest starting over from a fresh install of the stock ROM.
Went back to stock ROM without problems.
Reset to factory defaults.
Downloaded cm-10.2.1-ovation.zip again. No file differences found. Flashed it via CWM v6.0.2.8 for HD+ (Stock)
Flashed gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip.
The problem is still present.

Don't know what else to say. I just (literally) went from stock to 10.1, then to 10.2, then to 11 (which I'm on now). I would rather pack the stuff I use on one screen than flip back and forth between screens. I keep it full with widgets, shortcuts, and quick-launchers. No problems like yours.
When you say, "Reset to factory defaults." you mean you flashed it back to the stock firmware?
Yes, I did a full wipe and flashed back to stock ROM - to start over from scratch.
Then I flashed CM 10.2.1 as described... and the problem is back.
Now I'm trying CM11 (M6) which does not show this particular problem (everything moves smoothly), but it has some nasty bugs. Reading a book in "Google Books" often causes a crash and the Nook reboots. The notification bar crashes sometimes when I pull it down. Sound is strange in King.com games (Candy Crush etc.)...
FWIW - You're in good company. My most used app is Kindle (Ironic, aint it?). I get random reboots with every ROM I've tried. Some are much worse than others.

A few weeks back when I was messing around with CM6 nightlies, I tried using the inbuilt notification bar colour options to change the bar to black. I used it for a while and then noticed something, the changes keep coming back...
I have wiped/formatted MULTIPLE times since (including the SD card). I am now currently on CM6 final, and yet again the weird colour settings keep coming back.
Ex - Wiped/formated (including SD) today, flashed CM6 final. After the first reboot everything is stock CM6 (i.e. white notification bar). I reboot the phone again, and boom the weird dark colour changes now appear with the notification bar. I have tried resetting the changes, nothing. I have tried flashing themes (elegant steel today) and while they appear to work, the bar colours are all messed up even after successfully importing the xml. It's almost like they have merged with the old settings.
I'm seriously getting a little pissed. I don't understand why the bar settings ALWAYS come back even after full wipes/format or even after resetting the UI in CM settings. Is there some kind of backup somewhere? (I assume through google because the data on the card and phone has been wiped so many times).
Little help?
For what it's worth another reset of UI, davlik re-wipe and reflash fixed most of it. Also make sure that custom bar and drop down menu in CM settings are both unchecked generally. Mine always were, but apparently checking and then unchecking them again can help.
Hi and good morning.
So i had successfully rooted my nook at the start of this year, had it all setup with my apps, etc.. and well i also had a ton of apps for my 4 yr old on there. She was using the hell out of it and last night i looked over at her and i noticed that the Nook was rebooting. I didnt think much of it but then i saw it booting back up to the original OS, not the screens I have gotten familiar with seeing. Im not 100% sure, but im 99% sure that somehow she navigated to the settings of the NOOk and selected "Erase & Deregister Device". Ugh, im crushed.
But just wanted to check a few things before i root again:
1. I have to imagine it is okay to root again, correct?
2. What software could i have been using to have a nice little backup of the items that i had been using? Is there any you are using?
3. My next step will also be find an app that only allows certain programs to be open by my daughter.
I guess I should maybe take advantage of it being set back to the original today and go over to B&N and read for free for the hour..
Thanks --- Aaron
Hi there
1. Yes
2. I use either appmonster or titanium backup. Which if you like it is worth paying for paid version. That way if you have to do a restore you don't have to constantly click install.
3. Anyone have an idea about this one?

3. Try using a separate launcher for your daughter. i.e. Use Zeam/ADW/LP for your home screen, then use one of the others for your daughter. You can setup her screens the way you want and "hide" the settings icon as well. You wouldn't be able to have a default launcher but it would give you the ability to limit what your daughter can and can't use.
Thanks for the quick replies on this, much appreciated!

You can hide the entire status bar with zeam, there is a widget for full screen mode.

Can hide the status bar with ADW, as well.
Buy her one of her own!
We do have nandroid backups working now, that may be the way to go.
Thank you,
Joe

Good for the launcher but it returns in the apps. My biggest issue with it is when I'm typing I accidentally hit it constantly when I'm trying to REALLY type in landscape mode. Very annoying and frustrating.
They way they handle the softkeys and toolbar in Customized Nookie Froyo rocks
Hi,
I've recently installed cm 7.0.3 (after wiping all) on my Nexus One.
I've been having a problem which I'm sure I'm not the first one to experience and I've tried googling many terms that loosely describe the problem but I'm getting no results.
I want to try explaining my problem and maybe someone can point out the name for this problem so I could find a solution (or someone could offer a solution themselves?)
So what I'm seeing is that sometimes the UI doesn't update but the logic behind it occurs.
This doesn't happen all the time, just occasionally, and rebooting fixes the issue.
For example:
1. I open "settings" and the menu is supposed to scroll, When I try scrolling the screen just remains static, I see the menu as it opens but there's no scroll, HOWEVER when I click something on the screen, its as if the screen had scrolled and the option I click is the one that would have been under my finder had the screen scrolled. (like I scroll down, nothing happens, I click the bottom of the screen and "about phone" is opened.
2. I click something that opens a dialog, when a dialog opens, the screen behind the dialog usually goes dark. So instead the dialog showing, the screen goes dark, click "back" makes the screen light again (as if I closed the dialog), clicking anywhere on there the dialog is supposed to be while the screen is dark performs the action the dialog allowed.
I hope I made myself clear here...
Thanks.
I am pretty sure this is related to a low pmem issue that exists in stock Android. There is a bandaid fix for it on the tracker, and temasek made a flashable zip for it on the CM forums.
However, I believe this bug has been fixed in the nightlies. I don't know if it is a Android 2.3.4 fix, or something the CM dev team fixed, but I haven't had the bug since we switched to 2.3.4.
Thanks, I guess I'll just have to wait for a stable cm7..
The bandaid fix is just a simple flashable zip that you flash in recovery. While it doesn't fix the root of the problem, it did take away the symptom, so there were no more viewable issues with the screen. So I would go ahead and flash it. This is the file you want to flash (taken from the post I linked above).
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?qcmo5k3g72fsyos
I used it and it before the nightlies moved to 2.3.4 and it worked great. I never had any more issues with the screen (when went to a solid black, but on the bug report there were many different ways that this bug manifested).
I have had a savage hatred for Google's idea of softkeys (while loving Button Saviour's) ever since HC dropped on us with the Xoom. Is this method of getting rid of the navigation bar viable on the Nook HD? I read from the guides that the Nook was "sensitive" but am too dumb to know what this means.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1985592
Currently on 2.0.5 rooted with GApps but no location.
Do not try. Will do 8 boot, restore. Seems most anything related to /system will cause this.
Despite this limitation I still hate the Nexus 7 enough to stick with the NookHD
I have the same/similar problem with the grey toolbar. I have used LeapinLar's excellent guide for getting CWM on the nook and it works very well indeed. The only problem is that when running BSplayer/Moboplayer/Mxplayer etc the nook home grey bar doesn't disappear when playing a video.
The grey bar does go black but the screen doesn't expand to make use of the extra space that the stock nook video player uses. Is there a setting that makes the grey bar slide away like on the stock video player? If one player can do it hopefully the other player can be made to do the same, but I can't find a setting that allow this?
Cheers

There is no setting to do what you want. And the bar turning black with tiny white dots is called "lights out" mode. It is to fool you into thinking it is gone. It is a "feature".
They only way to get the bar to disappear is with third party software like "GMD gesture control". That particular one is a paid software.

You can try a free application called "full!screen" to hide the gray toolbar.
This should work with any CM10. I wrote it for my TouchPad and it also works on my HD2
ToggleBarCM10.apk
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1555097&d=1355245239
full!screen needs access to system tools. Will this result in me never being able to let the tablet die for want of battery or rebooting? GMD GestureControl also requests the access to "modify system settings".
I'm fine with never turning it off but I am wondering if there are other ways that the 8loop bootloop can occur. I mostly use the Nook for satisfying an 18 year old habit of reading TIME magazine so I would prefer to be on stock rather than switch back and forth.
It really is weird...I can't eat cereal without reading last week's news on TIME
Man, I messed up that edit!
I will repeat.
It is ok to change system settings, just not /system. System settings is in /data.
Neither GMD or full!screen change /system.
Earlier I found full!screen did not work, but now it does.
Oh, it is a new version, that's is why it works now... and I just rebooted and no issues. It is awesome.

CM10 already contains the code to switch the bar on and off, it is call expanded desktop.
It is usually accessed through the power menu but some builds don't have that option enabled, still the "logic" (finishAnimationLw()) inside the android.policy.jar is always there and can be "activated" using a simple setting on the system database.
Not sure about the "new" fullscreen app, but the way GMD used to hide the bar was killing the systemui service.
"ToggleBarCM10.apk" just updates the setting db switching the value on and off, it doesn't do anything else. It's not going to affect /system.
I've been doing that for quite a long time on the TouchPad and other devices with CM9 and CM10.
Search for "No way to hide the bottom bar in CM9" and you will would find the thread in Rootzwiki with a lot of more info about it
Am running the galaxy gear with null rom. I installed the nova launcher and sort of gave up on that, and went back to touchwiz.
Something strange happened recently - my Setup app on the gear itself is missing. It doesnt show in the gear manager on the phone. I tried clearing the gear manager cache on the phone - but it wont show up. It used to show up as one of those black+white big icons on the main screen if you side scroll. I had reordered a few of the main icons - but setup is totally missing.
Actually - I may even be confused. Sometimes if i double-finger tap - I can get a google-style setup screen (starts with a blank screen and a funny icon on the top right). From here I can see "settings" menu - tiny font - rather than the very unfunctional original Samsung setup - which had Display/Sound/etc.
I'm confused what I am seeing really because of the launcher confusion. (I can occasionally see the wifi/BT/battery status at the top).
Its really annoying because I cant easily see the battery status (despite having set this on the setup menu to display - when I could access the setup menu); and the note in the previous paragraph - that I can see the battery status is erratic - sometimes I can see the tiny status line but never when I want to see it - to check battery status).
I have rebooted the device.

Just tried to double tap my home screen - its so erratic - no joy. I succeeded 5 mins ago.
You need to re flash null rom and select the gear set up wizard to be installed. It is one of the options you can select when flashing the rom. There may be an easier fix but worst case scenario that should solve your problem. Also if you don't want Nova you can deselect it during flashing. That screen you are seeing is like on your phone when you slide down from the top of the screen (notifications, settings, etc)

Thank you - let me try that. I remember fiddling with the options on install - so this could be the magic clue.
Cant think why one would not want setup to be installed!
I had the same issue. Ended up flashing the latest null rom which included the set up wizard. Hope this works for you too.
