I'm looking to buy a used Moto X, and am trying to figure out which Moto X's receive updates from Motorola and not a carrier. I need a GSM phone and will be using a TMobile or AT&T MVNO in the US. I don't trust the carriers to continue pushing out Motorola's updates, so I'd rather just get them from Motorola directly.
My understanding is that the new dev versions and the retail, full-priced versions from Motorola will get updates. How do I identify those on the secondary market? Is it as simple as - if the back doesn't have a carrier logo, it gets updates from Motorola? Should I only be looking for an XT1053 and not an XT1058?
Looked in the FAQs and searched, but couldn't find an answer.

I could be wrong, but I don't think any of them get the update OTA straight from motorola. Even the dev and unlocked GSM's roms are labeled as T-Mobile retail. However, if you have one of those devices and an unlocked bootloader, you can download the system images straight from moto's website and easily install the updates yourself. So either version works in your case. The only difference is that you lose your warranty if you don't have a dev edition.

If you want to be able to use your phone on multiple carriers, definitely buy the XT1053.
The XT1053 comes bootloader-unlockable and sim-unlocked. If you buy the XT1058 AT&T variant, the bootloader cannot be unlocked (unless you are lucky enough to get a code from the china middleman), and the phones are SIM-Locked to AT&T (unusable on T-Mobile). Some have reported success getting a SIM-Unlock code from online sellers, but others have reported that they tried all of the online sellers and none of the unlock codes work.
If you want a phone that will 100% be usable on any GSM carrier, buy the XT1053.
All variants should [eventually] receive the updates.
Don't know about XT1053 but I got the XT1052 and it came with unlock-able bootloader too, and of course all GSM SIM cards are working.

The ATT XT1058 doesn't support HSPA/HSPA+ on AWS(1700/2100mhz). When T-Mobile first launched their HSPA/HSPA+ network that is the frequency they used. While they are working to upgrade and re-farm their 1900Mhz spectrum to HSPA/HSPA+, in areas where they haven't yet completed that, the XT1058 would only get EDGE when using it on T-Mobile
While the GSM Unlocked XT1053 is sim unlocked out of the box and bootloader unlockable, unlocking the bootloader does void the warranty. The Dev Edition XT1053 can't be customized (comes as 32gig, black face, woven white back, silver accents and says Dev Edition on the back), but unlocking the bootloader does NOT void the warranty. But in reality, the hardware "inside" is exactly the same, and they use the same roms/updates.
If you want to root, its easiest/best if you can unlock the bootloader.

I found an XT1053 on eBay with a spanish user manual. Bought it assuming the bootloader would be unlockable on the motorola site but I was wrong. https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215 lists the supported devices but "Latin America" doesn't get too specific.
Anyone know how we can determine which devices can be bootloader unlocked? I'd hate to go through this again. Maybe I should have just spent the extra $100 for a t-mobile version... I sure do like the lack of carrier branding on this device.
A better way to answer would be:

Sadly, it's not that simple. This is not an AT&T (XT1058) or Verizon (XT1060) but an XT1053. I believe it's a Nextel Moto X. It has a spanish manual, defaulted to spanish when setting it up, has an unused SIM card that says Nextel.
It was not able to be bootloader unlocked on the motorola site.

Cool. I thought I saw it with a T-Mobile logo on the back somewhere online but I could certainly be mistaken. There are no carrier apps installed on the T-Mobile version?
I think I'll just resell this one and buy the tmo or dev edition new straight from Motorola. Don't want to mess with eBay over and over trying to get one whose bootloader can be unlocked. I thought it was "not AT&T or Verizon" too but now I see that's not the case and it may just be a north american-centric view of the situation...

double check, but I'm 99% sure. they weren't even selling it in stores or on their own website as far as I know. no physical branding or software I'm pretty sure.
Thinking about the Moto X, the GSM edition, not the developer edition because I understand the developer version comes in white back and black front. I want all white Moto X. So because I am not getting the developer edition can I still unlock the bootloader??? I tried checking before asking this and could not find the answer.

it depends.
if you buy the t-mobile one on motorola.com its unlockable. if you get the at&t one it is not unlockable.
if you buy a rogers canada one its unlockable. if you buy a telcel or claro latin america unit they are unlockable. if you buy a mexico nextel GSM one it is not unlockable (some people are holding out hope that its a mistake and will have its IMEIs added to the unlock list..).

Well, it's not a "no." Like the poster said above, it depends on your carrier. VZW and ATT are a no go.
I have a Latin America Moto X (Movistar Chile), but when I try to unlock the bootloader, the Motorola Page throws me "your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking"
I have a Fido Canada version of this phone and I'm trying to unlock the boot loader but it tells me I'm not eligible . i know the my phone is the same as rogers. Why am I not able to?

Carrier needs to provide Motorola with the OK to allow the unlocking the bootloader, obviously Fido hasn't given them the OK, see if you can return it and pick up the rogers version at full price and use your Fido Sim card,you shouldn't have to Sim unlock as we all know Rogers is Fido's parent company

Basically the problem is some carriers are not giving their imei lists to Motorola to have those phones in the unlock program. Thats probably why there are some Latin America units that can't unlock

Being Fido makes no difference, it runs the Rogers firmware and is unlockable. Its looking like several people have tried to unlock bootloaders today(including me) and the Motorola website has said they are not eligible. So my conclusion at this point is that the backend server that handles the codes is down/broken.

For the Nextel Mexico XT1053, It has been confirmed that is a mistake as can be seen in this thread on Motorola's Website. They are working the issue, but it may take more time.

Wrong. I contacted Moto. The GSM unlocked version is NOT bootloader unlockable. My unlock code does not work. I am sending it back.

If the carrier doesn't want Moto to let you unlock, you can't. Motorola's web site for unlocking will tell you your device doesn't qualify and there is nothing you can do.

The off contract, GSM unlocked phone has nothing to do with carrier's wishes. I have this phone with an activated TMO sim and it is not eligible for unlock, period. This is sold directly by Motorola and is supplied with a TMO sim. TMO has no issue with bootloader unlocks, so it's not the carrier - this model is not bootloader unlockable.

Been there, done that. I was told by Moto that my off contract, unlocked full price GSM Moto X shipped with the Tmobile sim is not bootloader unlockable. The two people I spoke with fully understood the difference between sim unlocked and bootloader unlocked, and also knew that bootloader unlocking automatically voids the warranty except on the Developer version.

So your situation is totally different than any other situation, normally T-Mobile phones are unlockable, so Motorola has itself made your unlockable

Update: Moto just sent me a note saying that their system may not be updated with my IMEI yet, but once it is, the warranty is automatically and uncategorically voided when I apply for the unlock code. Since it's the 32GB version, I'll still RMA it and get the Developer version instead. It's the exact same money and unlocking the developer version does not void the warranty.

They're the exact same phone x1053, make sure the LTE bands are correct for the carriers you want to use (5 and 7 are x1058 only)

I contacted Motorola today, to verify that the t-mobile off-contract version indeed was sim-unlocked, but they replied that it WAS sim-locked, and also was carrying the t-mobile logo on the back.
I think it's really hard to figure out who to believe, since many are reporting that it comes sim-unlocked, but wouldn't Motorola be the one to know for sure?

I can't verify whether it's SIM locked or not but I have one in my hand and the T-Mobile XT1053 does not have any branding on it. There is no logo on it. There are no T-Mo apps on it either.
It's unlocked. Using it with prepaid at&t.

So, I'm assuming the whole bootloader unlocking process has less to do with the carrier itself and more with the software different carriers actually use on the phone. However, I was wondering if there was a possibility for me to unlock my AT&T MOTO X bootloader if I switch carriers. I'm moving to Europe in about a week and we are discontinuing our AT&T service and unlocking phones to move to a European carrier. Will this allow the possibility to unlock my bootloader? This is probably a stupid question but I was really wondering how it works. I'm not exchanging phone models or anything, I'm keeping the XT1058.
Edit: I won't be on a contract. I'll be using Italian pay-as-you-go services.

The carrier you are using has nothing to do with the bootloader. Since you have an at&t xt1058, your only option to unlock is the China middleman.

I feared as much. I just got the phone about 6 hours ago and I can still return it for a small restocking fee. I will call tomorrow and see if any stores carry the Developer Edition. I also understand the difference between SIM and Bootloader unlock. Thanks for the swift reply, it cleared everything up for me. I have searched about the Chinese Middleman and apparently his services have been discontinued?

Find the thread titled "China middleman back". He is available, but can only unlock devices with a 2014 manufacture date (with a few exceptions).
AFAIK, the Developer Editions are only available direct from Motorola. You can also buy the "GSM Unlocked" T-Mobile variant. It comes bootloader-unlockable (straight from Moto's website), AND sim-unlocked for any carrier.
The GSM Unlocked "T-Mobile" variant is identical in every way to the GSM Developer edition, EXCEPT that your warranty is void when you unlock the bootloader. The Dev Edition retains warranty, even after being unlocked. Both of them use the same exact ROM, and neither have any carrier branding or 'bloatware'.

Damn, that's bad news for me. The Moto X was virtually a free upgrade for me through AT&T, so getting the Dev Edition through Motorola, I expect I'd have to pay full price regardless. I guess that isn't an option. I looked into that thread and I'm considering purchasing a code, but there is a pretty large possibility I'll just exchange for a different phone and avoid any costs. Its really too bad, I really liked this phone. Should've done my research. Thanks a lot for all the help.

Just one last heads-up:
The XT1058 supports 2 extra LTE bands that the XT1053 (Dev edition OR T-Mobile variant) do not. It is better optimized for use overseas since it supports nearly all the bands used overseas. The Dev / T-Mobile variants DO support one extra UMTS band (AWS band - for HSPA/HSPA+) that is used almost exclusively by T-Mobile.
If you ARE able to get a BL unlock code, your 1058 will be better suited for you to use overseas. SIM-Unlock shouldn't be hard at all, and the codes are very cheap.
So for $45 (BL Unlock) + $10-$15 to SIM-Unlock, you will end up with a device that will work better than the DEV edition will.

You've rekindled my hopes a fair bit. I was just afraid if my code from the middleman didn't work I'd be out $45. Maybe I will give it a try. I love this phone so much even after just a day. I guess the price would be worth it. As for the whole overseas switching and fee payment, my father is in the military. We are being stationed overseas per military orders, so AT&T is basically waiving the fees. We get upgrades and get out of the contract a little under a year early with virtually no repercussions, which is great. In the end, as much as I desire an unlocked bootloader, I may just keep the phone regardless of whether I can unlock or not. It is really amazing and Im not sure if I'd be happy with another phone I can get through AT&T. If only I could upgrade to Nexus 5 through AT&T, I don't really like Samsung or HTC.

The XT1056 is SIM-Locked to Sprint. If you are a current Sprint customer, and meet certain criteria, sprint will "OTA-Unlock" your XT1056 for international use ONLY. XT1056 cannot be used domestically on any U.S. GSM carrier, even with "OTA-Unlock". Additionally, with the XT1056 you cannot "buy" a SIM-Unlock code from an online merchant. The ONLY way to unlock is through Sprint, and only if you are a current customer and meet other criteria, and even then, it's international GSM use only.
Your phone is brand new, and it was free. See what you can get on swappa for it, and pick up a mint-ish XT1053. No point in paying money to return your phone in my opinion. I was only out another $80 or so doing just that, but I got a bootloader unlock and twice the storage space!

Yeah, that's an incredibly smart route to take. Unfortunately, I'm leaving the states too soon to do any deals on swappa. Pie root and Xposed Framework is good enough for the time being I suppose.

If I buy a Moto X XT1058, will that work on UK carriers? Do any variants have advantages over others?
I'd buy the model which has the most GSM bands matching those used by UK carriers.

XT1052 is the model you should get unless you don't care for British/EU LTE bands.

Depends on what bands your carrier uses.
The XT1058, XT1060, and most other X's (except the XT1056 for Sprint and Republic Wireless in the USA) support Quad Band GSM (for GSM/GPRS/EDGE). It supports standard frequencies for UMTS/HSPA.
The Xt1058 supports the most LTE bands, so chances are better for LTE outside the USA.
Take a look at Wikipedia for the X, its pretty accurate.
You may need to sim unlock the XT1058, but codes can be purchased on line for $10 to $30 USD. I know the ATT XT1058 is SIM locked, I'm not sure about the other varients (like the XT1058 from Rogers Canada, etc).
If you want to root, and you get an XT1058, just make sure its not an ATT XT1058. The ATT XT1058 can't have its bootloader unlocked, unless it still has 4.4.2 or lower on it, and you pay for Sunshine. Rogers and other XT1058 can get their bootloader unlock code for free from Moto's web site, and you can use the code no matter what ROM is on the phone (although it does void the warranty). Unlocking the bootloader is the only way to root Android 4.4.4, and possibly future versions. And its the easiest way to root Older Android versions on the X.

Hi,
"Unlocked" means that the phone works with SIMs from any mobile operator. So it's more like "operator unlocked".
Unlocker bootloader Moto Xs (and Gs) are called "Developer Edition".

There are TWO types of "Unlocked" and some people do confuse them.
SIM Unlocked (aka Carrier unlocked) which just allows you to use any other carrier's sim in the phone.
Bootloader Unlocked, which allows you to flash unsigned parts (like 3rd party recoveries, roms, etc).
So if you see a phone listed only as "Unlocked" it could mean either.
Motorola did sell a few "GSM Unlocked (ships with XXX SIM)" type models on Moto Maker website (mostly for T-Mobile and Net10 in the USA). These were the XT1053 variety, shipped SIM unlocked, and could have their boot loaders unlocked by requesting then using the bootloader unlock code. Per moto's wording on the web site, requesting the bootloader unlock code voids the warranty.

I will disagree with you here.
Yes, Moto did sell Developer Editions of the X for GSM and Verizon USA (CDMA). They were bootloader unlockable. You just request the code from Moto's web site. And unlocking the bootloader doesn't void the warranty.
But when it comes to the "2013 X", for some carrier editions and Moto Maker editions (Like T-Mobile, Sprint, Rogers and many others), Motorola also freely gives away the BootLoader Unlock codes when requested On Motorola's Web Site. In the case of the Non-Developer Editions, it voids their warranty to request the code.
The exceptions being ATT USA, Republic Wireless USA, and Verizon USA. For those, Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock codes (likely due to agreements with those carriers). That being said, when the China Middle Man was operating, you had a chance to purchase a boot loader unlock code, and unlock those as well. And of course, doing so voided your warranty.
