Which Wi-Fi calling apps do you use from the play store since the Moto X doesn't have native Wi-Fi calling from what I know? Or does it have wi-fi calling?

Only the Republic Wireless Moto X has native WiFi calling, AFAIK.

I use them and it has worked well for me. Speed and coverage are entirely dependent on the Sprint service in your area.
Where I live, Sprint recently upgraded to 4G, and speeds are in the 5-10mbps range, which is perfectly acceptable for me. If you have any friends on Sprint, you could ask them what speeds they experience. Additionally, Republic wireless offers a 30-day money back guarantee.
If you would like to try them out, I'll give you a referral link to save you $20 off your bill. You HAVE to use a Republic Wireless Moto X (or Moto G) on RW though. You cannot bring your own device (because of the custom rom with integrated WiFi calling).
EDIT: Here is the referral link, if you decide to try them: http://rwshar.es/28KK (This will save you $20, and I get credit as well. Win-Win )

Okay, I don't get paid till next friday, so I will have to see how much I have because of payroll issues. I will try to either get Republic Wireless or T-Mobile's Galaxy S4 w/ Wifi Calling or a Nexus 5.

Get RW's Moto X - I'm on their $10 a month plan and it's excellent. If you travel outside the US a lot you can only use wifi - you can't pop in a local sim.
EDIT - Moto X starts $299 black/white 16GB, $349 MotoMaker 16GB, $374 MotoMaker 16GB Wood, $399 MotoMaker 32GB, $424 MotoMaker 32GB Wood. Moto G starts at $149 8GB, $179 16GB

I'll get my Note 3 unlocked from AT&T tomorrow or soon just for travelling internationally while using the Moto X as the main device. I won't really pay as much for AT&T. I will consider the $40 RW plan actually. I like LTE data.
Well, I can't figure what exactly do you mean with WIFI calling. As far as I know Republic Wireless force calling via WIFI whenever is possible but it is locked to the RW network and cell calling comes as a subsidiary.
Speaking of internet calling in general, you can use it on any Android phone. You must install one of the sip clients as Csipsimple or Sipdroid. In previous versions (ICS, JB) you could use native sip client which is integrated into the system. Motorola removed one file from the system which is essential for the internet calling though (android.software.sip.voip.xml) but you can get it back if you're rooted. But this is not the only problem with the native sip. In KitKat is somehow damaged and using it causes massive voice distortion which is allegedly result of inappropriate echo management. The malfunction is one of about 300 which should have been fixed in 4,4,3 version. It would be nice if someone, who already officially upgraded, tests the sip functionality.
As it has been announced Google plans to integrate his voice app into Hangouts in 5.0 and therefore offer voip as its own standard telephony. It seems that with further development of telecommunications (LTE Advanced) the mobile phone loses its last trad functionality - there will be no more voice transmission, voice will be transferred as any other data via internet from initial base station to the end one.

So seeing how I basically am forced to have Verizon, I'm wondering if I should even bother with the Moto X since it's going to be locked down. Is the ATT version going to be unlockable or no? Would you still buy this phone if it's on Verizon and locked down or would you skip it? I'm really wanting the Moto X though and can't afford to buy it outright due to my ****ty job.
Sucks to only have an option of Verizon where I live and some AT&T coverage. BTW, VZW single line plan has this little thing in it that I find odd that they're even allowed to do something like this.
What do I get with the $60/2 GB smartphone single line plan?
You get comprehensive service for your smartphone on America’s Largest 4G LTE Network, including:
Unlimited voice minutes
Unlimited text messaging
2 GB of data a month - data overage is $15/1 GB
Download and install the Verizon Cloud app on your smartphone to get 5 GB of free storage. Visit our Verizon Cloud page for more information.

Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
Totally forgot to mention that -_-. They offer 5gb of cloud storage, yet only 2gb of data. Guess it's meant for wifi, but seriously why?
But the main topic of the thread is anyone considering getting the Moto X on VZW at all or what?
I just picked mine up today. Loving everything about it. Still not sure if I want the note 4 instead but time will tell. This phone means business and is a great size
Hello all,
I recently bought my wife and I new phones. I chose the US version of the 2nd Gen Moto G. This is model XT1064. We plan to use Consumer Cellular as it's cheaper than T-Mobile, but has all the features we need. Should I have bought the Global XT1063 model instead since Consumer Cellular uses AT&T's network? Obviously these are not LTE phones.

US model has Tmobile and ATT bands. Global model has ATT bands and 2G tmobile bands, (unless you are in a refarmed area)
if you are in ATT either one is good, dont be like me i bough the Globan and i was on ATT... had to change company(it was easier than returning the phone and getting the US one)

Ok, thank you for the reply. I seem to be missing something though. Why did you have to switch away from ATT if the global model is supposed to work with it?
We got the phones yesterday, and our SIM cards will be here today (wed). They shipped out of China on Friday and got here Tuesday, amazing. Compared to my droid HTC Incredible 1, this phones is big. I have them charged up, but haven't done anything with them yet. Our 32GB flash cards should be here today as well. I can't wait to see how well these phones work and what kind of signal we get in our home. Even if I have to go outside to make a call, I don't care. I'm just glad to be rid of the $160/month Verizon bill. It was an unlimited data plan, but we just don't use that much. 2.5GB shared should be plenty for us. If not, we'll switch to T-Mobile. Either way, it will still be a ton cheaper than what we were paying. I hope this phone holds up as good as the Incredibles did. I guess I'm officially old now since I'm switching to CC.

Ok, I understand. Any reason you chose Cricket over Consumer Cellular? Is it because you use a lot of data? Cricket looks to be the best deal if you want a lot of data and only one line. I can't tell, but if you have two lines do you "share" the data allowance, or is it for each phone like t-mobile does. CC shares the data allowance and talk/text limits across all the phones so each additional line is only $10. If we start using a lot of data, we may switch to t-mobile or cricket, whatever is the cheapest to use for us. Right now we use less than 1GB/month between us, usually less than 500MB total per month. We don't text either or talk very much on the phone.

Cricket looks to be a lot cheaper than T-Mobile around here. CC is the cheapest provider that I could find, but they nail you for overages. They now support LTE phones which is fairly new I think. They don't have any "unlimited" plans and you have to share your data/talk/text with everyone on the plan. They don't charge you anything for the SIM card though. Verizon seems to be the most expensive guys out there for family or single lines. Their coverage was good though.

As mentioned with T-Mobile YMMV depending on where your at, I use the Global Moto G 2014 for my business phone hooked up to T-Mobile and with my travels around I've been getting a good 8-10mbps upload and 2-3mpbs download speed with my phone usually being on H+ and in weaker areas 3G with Edge (2G) only rarely popping up when I'm deep in a data center or in the middle of a big concrete building.

Following up, man what an ordeal to get the data working. CC even sells this model of the phone now, and I could have bought from them for $30 less per phone ($150). Oh well, live and learn. I don't know if they are selling the US or the Global model though.
Didn't have any trouble getting the numbers transferred or getting the voice service to work. Even though data was "enabled" online in the account settings, the phones weren't connecting to the mobile data service. I didn't notice until I left the house for the day.
They are really nice and try to help, but first level support is lacking in technical expertise. They couldn't remotely configure it so I had to wait for second level help to save the day, more or less. They gave me some APN settings that got it limping along at about 512Kbps (yes that's bits per second) even though the phone showed H+ in the display. After spending a couple hours on google reading about APN settings, I was able to make some "adjustments" and get it moving at around 4Mbps down and about 300Kbps up. Certainly not LTE speeds, but usable nonetheless. I have no idea if MMS (whatever that is exactly) works or not, but the web is working now.
I really like the phone. It's way way faster than the Droid Incredible 1 that we had been using for the last 4 years. At 1/3 the cost per month, I can live with the data speeds.
EDIT: I just ran a speed test in good signal area and I'm getting 7.5Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up. I can definitely live with that. Not bad for H+ considering that most LTE users I know are getting pretty much the same here in Houston.

I've been using the Moto G 2014 (XT-1063) with Consumer Cellular for about a month now and am very pleased with it. I think you will be quite happy. We have the 2 gig data plan (shared) and have no problem staying under the limit. We live in a rural area and the download/upload speeds are very good. The overall performance of this phone is fantastic. My wife has a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and this phone out performs it.
I found the APN settings for Consumer Cellular online two years ago, when I got my first smart phone (a Huaweii 8800), so it was just a matter of copying them over to my new phone. But I do know from experience that when you call their customer service, it is iffy as to whether you get a rep who knows the answer to your question.
MMS (Multimedia Message Service) deals with photos, video and audio that you include in a text message, as opposed to SMS (Short Message Service) which is text only. If you want to test its functionality, send somebody a text with a photo attached.
FYI - the model Moto G that Consumer Cellular sells is the first generation model, thus the lower price.

Ok, so you have the Global model then. Can you tell me what your APN settings are? I found that by clearing the first Proxy and Port fields, that my speed increased drastically along with response time.
FYI - CC actually sells the 2014 as a Moto G EXT, they just listed it this week. The 2013 sells for $100 and the 2014 goes for $150, no kidding. I wish I'd have waited a week before buying phones directly from Motorola. I could have saved $29 per phone by buying them from CC. I'd like to know what model CC is selling though, XT1063 or XT1064. I'm still wondering if I should have bought the XT-1063 instead since T-Mobile has already upgraded (refarmed?) their stuff in houston.
So far, I'm very happy with the Moto G 2014. It's a little big compared to my old phone, but I'm getting used to that. It still fits in my pocket. I wish it had a metal back instead of plastic, but it still looks and feels like a well made phone. Can't beat that Gorilla Glass for durability. My 4 year old HTC Droid Incredible still looks like brand new. I'm going to put a new battery in it and give it to my kid. I don't think it will work with CC since it's a CDMA phone, but Straight Talk says it will work with their service. It doesn't use a SIM card either. The HTC Droid Incredible was a fairly high end phone back when it was new. It even has an 8Mpixel camera in it.

Wow! That is interesting about CC selling the 2nd Gen now. I looked at their offerings before I bought my phone and they didn't have it yet thus I went with one from Amazon. No regrets though as I was ready to upgrade and I got a month's usage out of it before they offered it. My old phone was just too obsolete. The newest version of Android I could find in the custom ROM's was 2.3.8. There were several apps I wanted to use that are not compatible with it. CC is doing much better at staying up on more current phones. They now offer the iPhone 6 as well. We've been with them for four years and this year has been a dramatic difference with their offerings.
My APN settings are as follows :

APN - att.mvno

Yeah, I kinda wish I would have waited a week and gotten my phones from CC since they're so much cheaper through them. The savings would have paid for the 32MB SD card and a protector.
My settings are pretty much the same except that I have:
APN type - default,mms,supl,agps,fota
MVNO type - none and the MVNO value is greyed out
I've tried hipri, but it didn't seem to help at all. It's my understanding that fota allows for OTA updating. I guess agps tells the phone that it can get supplemental position information from the network, but I'm just guessing on that.
If I set MVNO type to GID, my specially named APN profile vanishes and I can't select it from the previous screen. I also see one named AT&T PHONE with an APN value of phone. I don't know what that one is for, but I do know it doesn't work if I select it.
My speeds are all over the place. I guess it's due to congestion. I can pick the same server that gave me 7.5Mbps and it gives me about 2Mbps from my home even with 4 bars of strength. I get the best speeds when I'm away from home for some reason. Well, except when WiFi is turned on then I get about 52Mbps down and 12Mbps up.
I'm seriously thinking about dumping Verizon for T-Mobile with the 2 lines for $100 for unlimited everything. I want to get rid of Comcast and use T-Mobile as my internet connection for my home use also. The question that I have is can root bypass the 5gb hotspot connection so I can use the hot spot for more data?
Yes ... you can even do it without root by adding dun to your APN type in settings.
That is a bit of tricky question as we truly (or at least I haven't seen a definitive answer) don't know as how T-Mobile determines if someone is using their hotspot beyond whatever software might be installed on a branded handset which alerts T-Mobile to the use of the feature.
If T-Mobile can determine that you are using your hotspot feature regardless of whatever you do on your handset (like bypassing) than it wouldn't make a difference what you do.
I have seen multiple conflicting reports over the years and there doesn't seem to be anything close to a consensus.
Dan
I left Verizon for T-Mobile last month for the same deal. I was grandfathered into unlimited data for Verizon and 700 minutes, but no text. My wife texts like crazy so I was paying way more than I should have each month. Regardless, $100 for us both with unlimited everything was the catch. Texts for her, data for me. I tether a lot in my job, and I've been known to download heavy files from time-to-time. So far, T-Mobile has been great. Data speeds are a bit slower, but coverage where I am most of the time is just as good or even a bit better than Verizon.
The problem was the phone. I couldn't use my old Verizon Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile (well, I could, just HSPA+ instead of LTE). I got an unlocked Nexus 5 that worked great. Earpiece was busted, I swapped it, still didn't work, sold it and got a Moto X 2014 Pure Edition instead. So far, so good. Tethering works once rooted. I've not come close to the usually 2-3GB of tethering that I do each month. But no warnings or caps or throttle as best I can tell.
All I can say, keep away from the branded phones. Go and get a Google Play edition phone. You'll be thankful you did. My wife's T-Mobile branded LG G2 is great for her, but it drives me nuts. I had one too (before the Google Play Edition Nexus 5) for like 2 days before I sold it.
Not on one of the big 4 here in the USA with your shamu? Since the Nexus 6 is mostly not carrier subsidized, I'm thinking this is a good place to find out what MVNO's people are using to save money If so, please tell us who your with, what plan your on with them, and why your with them!! And anything else you care to share both good and bad...
In the last year I have been on the following MVNO's...
Ting - Sprint
Ting - T-Mobile
Straight talk - T-Mobile
Straight talk - Verizon
Straight talk - AT&T
Google Project Fi
Cricket - AT&T
Page Plus - Verizon
Verizon Prepaid
AT&T Gophone
And have signed up for Harbor Mobile AT&T and Red Pocket Mobile Verizon. Haven't received the Sim's yet for the last 2.. Let me know if you have questions on any of these. Will be happy to report my results
In addition to that, I was in contract with the real big red dollar sucking Verizon and also was on the real big Orange AT&T on a company business plan.
I used to be on ting, then straight talk, then project Fi, then Verizon prepaid, now I'm on post paid since my wife gets a state of California employee discount and California now taxes prepaid. I liked ting and project Fi until I moved up to an area being ruled mostly big red only. I enjoyed project Fi, but had issues when I forced it to roam on Verizon. My phone number would change to a whole different area code!

I am still on FI with one of my phones and I like that fact that I can, with a little doing have 1 SIM card that I can make work on all 4 of the big carriers here in the USA in the event of really needing it. I also noticed that when roaming on Verizon that the outbound caller ID was different... Not sure why. I also really like Wifi calling and texting, it works so well. It also works great when traveling internationally and has very good rates. At least in Europe where I have tested it.
I started out on H2O Wireless because it was cheap, but low data cap and slow speeds sent me looking elsewhere. I am now on Straight Talk (AT&T) $45/month 5gb LTE and it's awesome. It was between that and the Verizon ST plan, but Verizon throttles MVNO data speeds, so AT&T won out. Just gotta remember to remove the sim card when I update so I don't get AT&T's stupid app on my phone.

Ha, been there done that with Straight talk.. Your right on!! Did you know that Straight talk now has a 10gb plan for 55$? Pretty cool.
I'm currently on Sprint Framily postpaid- $45 (actually around $52 with taxes) for unlimited data + talk/text with Verizon roaming. Over the years I've used everything from Virgin Mobile, Straight Talk, T-Mobile prepaid $30 5GB data plan, T-Mobile postpaid, MetroPCS, Project Fi and Verizon Prepaid.
I'm on Google's Project Fi. Love everything about it - switching between T-Mobile and Sprint, occasional Google's automatic VPN when connecting to open Wi-Fi, low monthly bill (staying under $35 p/month) with heavy Wi-Fi use, Wi-Fi calling and seamless switching to cellular, etc.
I've used freedompop off and on, great service and you can't beat free

Woah that sounds like a great plan. I'm currently on Fi, I might just jump to Straight Talk. Now do I go CDMA with VZN or GSM with AT&T..hmmmm.

Yeah!! Its brand new and works great!!! Def go with AT&T. With that you get simultaneous voice and data and uncapped data speeds. With the VZW one, you have no data while on the phone and your speed it capped at 6x6 up and down.

FI is truly great! With root access you can force roam to all USA carriers. If you live where Tmo and Sprint have good coverage and aren't a heavy data user, its a no brainer!!

it's sprint based so take that as you may.
it's truly free (i haven't been feed at all after activation like 8 months ago ) however for free you only get 500MB data, 500txt and 200 minutes. you will get nickle and dimed at every turn and that's their bussiness model so if you understand the charges is fine.
here is the low down: they say 200 minutes and 500 texts, unlike others with which you can assume some other things you can't here: no voicemail, that's extra, calls are over data through VOIP, infrastructure calling and texting is extra, mms isn't included, that's extra, so on, you get the picture, 200 min 500 text 500 data. that's it.
that said, their fees for "the basics" are pretty reasonable: 7.99 gets you voice-mail, mms, infrastructure, tethering and data roll over. and unlimited minutes+text is only 10.99 so for $19 you get a pretty decent grandparent phone with 500 megs, 2gigs is $20 and 4 gigs is $35. which is sill cheaper than some...
i love using freedompop for my "leftover" devices, i use sprint ($45/mo for unlimited through framily) as my main phone but since I'm a phone geek i like to have extras, so once i upgrade i keep them alive on freedompop, i also have a "free" tablet from sprint that once the contract ended i put on freedompop. great experience so far.
i just realized I sound like a sales person lol but i promise I'm not. (and a sales person wouldn't say nickle and dime)

Pretty sure no LTE roaming. Just 3g or 1x. Luckily where I live Sprint has a great LTE footprint.
I am on Metro PCS. It is $60 a month with taxes and fees included for true unlimited data for the phone. No cap and no throttling. It also includes 8gb of hotspot data. It runs on tmobile towers. I have had att and verizon through straight talk, but I really like the fact that I dont have to worry about my data usage anymore.
T-Mobile's $80 unlimited high-speed, 7gb tethering. For a while I was angry with this because when I signed up I was on the $70 unlimited/5gb tethering plan, but for the first couple weeks I was borrowing a phone that I couldn't root (not because it was borrowed, but because the USB connection was effed and couldn't USB tether), so I exceeded the plan and had to change it. And that's when they decided to eliminate the $70 plan and go with the $80 one. But now the same plan is $95, so I'm considering myself lucky. And frankly 7gb tethering suits me better, because I like to play a lot of games and sometimes exceed the 5gb from watching videos for free gold/gems/energy/etc (I keep my SIM in my S4, USB tethered to my computer, with my "main" phone on wifi).
I've thought about switching to MetroPCS. But at this point, with the price increase in T-Mo's plan, I don't want to "risk" switching to save a few bucks because if it doesn't work out it'd cost me more in the end to switch back. I'd probably use Google Project Fi if I had "proper" internet at home, but right now, my phone is my internet. PdaNet was the best $8 I've ever spent.
So can any one please confirm that with the Nexus 6 on Metro PCS... Does WiFi calling and VoLTE both work OK?
Hi all,
My wife and I are thinking that project fi might be too expensive for us with the amount of data that we use. If we Port over to T-Mobile, will my wife's Moto X4 work and be full featured? I mean things like simultaneous talk/surf (very important) and wifi calling?
I have the Pixel 2 XL and I'm pretty sure that it would work on TMobile with all of the above mentioned features.
Thank you!
Yes, it will work. I used mine on TMO briefly. My wife used her Pixel 1 as well and all features work as expected.
Neither of your phones has the new Band 71 that TMO has started to roll out, but for the next couple of years you should be fine. I believe that there is only one phone available right now that will work on Band 71.

Great! What carrier did you end up with?
Also, when you tried the Moto X4, was that the Android One version?

I've got an Xfinity Mobile (Verizon) SIM in it right now. I purchased the phone from FI, so it is the Android One version. Fi trained me to minimize data usage, and I'm able to stay within the 100MB free allowance at XM. Total cost per month is $2.39 taxes/fees. Yes, I am a skinflint.

Wait, how did you get an XM sim without buying one of their phones? If I can bring my A1 MotoX4 to XM, I'm switching.
They had the LG Charge phone on sale for $1 in August so I bought one. The ultimate cheapskate deal! The LG is surprisingly good with tremendous battery life, but I use Android Pay and the LG doesn't do NFC. I use the LG now as a remote control for video, and also keep it around in case I have trouble with the SIM since XM will not deal with BYOD at all.
The X4 works fine with the Verizon SIM that XM uses although I've heard of trouble with visual VM. That isn't a problem for me since I use a Google Voice number for everything and never use the XM number. XM doesn't support wifi calling either, but since I'm using GV that isn't a problem for me either. My use case may be atypical, but for me XM and X4 work fine together.
