M7 - Wifi won't turn on - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Received a warranty replacement for my HTC One (M7), which is a brand new handset running 4.4.2 and sense 6.0. The wifi on the device will not turn on at all. It just looks like it is continuously trying to start with no way to stop it. My last two of the same phone had hardware issues and I am hoping for an easier fix than sending it away again under the warranty.
So far I have tried:
- Factory reset
- Tried to boot to recovery to clear the caches, but it just goes to a black screen
- Toggling between Airplane mode (as suggested on some forums)
- Tested setting up as a portable hotspot. It goes through the steps and completes, but then just says that the feature is still switched off
Any help would be appreciated. I would rather not flash a custom rom, but am open to the idea if needed. If this is a hardware fault and needs to go away under warranty I would be better to find out now and send it off sooner.

Have you ruled out the possibility of it being your Router ?
have you tried to get wifi in different areas ? If it never connects to wifi anywhere it's most likely a hardware issue. I have never had a wifi issue with dozens of different software configurations. Unlocking the bootloader may void your chance of sending it back

If you dont want to send your phone back, i`d try to make a factory reset first. If that does not solve your problems, s-off your phone, install a custom recovery and flash a custom rom from xda. If that makes no difference try to flash a different firmware (that matches with your phone!!).
I hope that helped.
Good luck and if you have any questions, feel free to ask in this thread. :good:

In the house we have multiple tablets, computers, other phones, Chromecast, etc etc. My previous HTC Ones never had any issues with my wireless. The issue remains that the wireless on the device will not turn on at all in order to search for or connect to the WLAN. It just says "Turning on.." indefinitely.

I was hoping to avoid installing a custom rom this time around (had the stock M7 Google rom on previously). I may try a new rom just to rule out hardware issues. It's sounding more and more like Im going to have to return the phone...

[Q] Stuck on logo screen suddenly. Ideas?

Hi,
Last night my Galaxy S was low on battery, and I kept trying to turn it on for it to die right away (it was working as expected I guess)
This morning after I charged my phone it wouldn't turn on at all! It loads to the logo screen, makes that jingle sound and then holds and doesn't turn on.
I can get to recovery and download mode.
I put OCLF on like 2 months ago, but haven't modded/flashed ANYTHING since. It is very bizarre how it just died.
I'm wondering what my options are now. Obviously I would rather not loose all my personal files. Since I can get into download mode, can I just flash a new firmware? I'd like FroYo anyway, but I haven't got a clue what to do.
Great start to the year – !
Cheers,
Mitch
EDIT: I just decided to try the "Clear User Cache" option and then reboot to no avail. Now I can't get back into recovery mode!?!? Download mode still works. Huhh?? Is this expected? Have I lose Recovery Mode entirely now? Crap.
seeeems like an odin flash via the download mode is the only way. There are a few tutorials on this site and even tut vids on youtube so you should be fine if you just follow everything they do (as long as it works for them of course)
How do I know what version to flash? I have read a few tutorials and they all have started with "Dial x and check you have y" etc. Obviously I can't do any of that.
What is the *safest* firmware I can flash?
My phone currently has some optus variety.
Please forgive the noodish question.
Mitch
Where are you located? And who is your provider?
Hi,
I'm in Sydney Australia and my provider is Optus.
Thanks
Hi,
I still can't get my phone working and am not clear how to proceed.
What would be the best firmware to flash to my Optus Galaxy S that bricked out of the blue? Should I just send it back to Samsung?
Thank You

Hey mate go to samfirmware and get I9000DTJG4 thats the stock optus rom once you get phone up and running then upgrade to 2.2.1.
Sounds like you'll need to do a flash of a stock rom..
By the way, the old oclf had some issues that might lead to system corruption (unfortunately I'm not very sure exactly what it does, or whether it could lead to this problem). I'd suggest getting one of the newer lag fixes available here when you do get your phone running again

tragusman has got it right. Depending on what the issue is, you'll either recover nicely or your phone is toast. Flash the above stock firmware and give it a shot. Note that you'll likely loose your data and settings.
If you're new to flashing firmwares, check the great reference guide on where to find Odin and how to use it (this is the app you'll use to flash the above firmware).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
After flashing, try getting into recovery mode. If you can look for an error message under the standard menu. Can't get to d/l mode? You're probably in trouble. Get into recovery and see an error msg? Post the error here or google it for a solution. No error msg? You're probably ok - restart the phone.
Good luck.
Thanks guys.
I'm about to try it now, but before I start potentially breaking my phone even more, I was just thinking: Could I just send it back to Samsung? Would they fix it, or identify right away I have changed something and void my warranty.

If it's broke, you can't break it any more I've sent phones back in for support after flashing back stock firmware (flashing it after it "died").

Nexus - repair centre HTC

Hi,
I'm going to sent my Nexus one to the HTC repair centre, because he's been having this annoying random reboots.
My nexus has an unlocked bootloader, with a rooted custom rom. Is this going to be a problem for HTC? I mean, did I lost my warranty?
Because the problem is a hardware problem (I guess), so it has nothing to do with the custom rom...
Is there any possibility to lock the bootloader again and make the device look like how it looked when I bought it?
Thanks in advance!
are you sure this is a hardware problem? these kind of reboots are not uncommon with custom roms, have you tried chaing roms or kernels and seeing if that fixed it?

I've changed the kernels a few times. An I had the reboots on CM7 and on Miui.
Those roms are pretty stable I guess? And I haven't heard others complaining about reboots.
the reboots occur really randomly. Sometimes after a phone call, sometimes while browsing, sometimes while taking a picture. Sometimes I take my phone out of my pocket and it has rebooted, so I have to type in the PIN-code...
I tried factory reset and a clean install, with/without a2sd. with stock kernel, or with another kernel...
I don't know what to do anymore
After you flash any of these ROMs do your restore via titanium backup or similar because it happened to me once that every time I tried to open angry birds (weather it was normal seasons or beta) it would try to start then it would crash and it was no in the market and every time I would go to download it the phone would start the download then right before the install (when it hit 100%) it would go back to the cyanogen mod boot logo (I was running cyanogen obviously) so maybe it is something in your data that is screwing up and it keeps getting restored with titanium.
When you say a clean install, does this include MANUALLY wiping the /system partition?
Anyway, to your original question, unlocking your phone does void the warranty, that being said, HTC is usually good about replacing phones when it is a true hardware defect and keeping it as a warrantied repair. Most likely, when you get your phone back (if they don't replace it with a new one), it will be locked again with the stock OS on it.
But, your warranty is void, so HTC does not have any legal requirement to fix it under warranty. I am just telling you what I have noticed from other people's experiences.

Yes, I manually wipe everything.
Ok, thanks for the answer.
Since the warranty is void, does it still matter with which rom I give them the phone?
If they see a non-rooted stock rom, maybe they won't think the problem is caused by a custom rom?
Probably not. For any hardware problem, I'd bet the first thing they are going to do is flash a completely stock ROM to verify it isn't some software bug.
It is just easier than trying to troubleshoot. I don't even know how many of them would turn it on and let the phone boot up as that takes away a lot of time depending on how many phones they service in a day.
Hi!
I have the same problem and I could assure you guys that's a Hardware issue!!!
Probably the same as the HTC Desire!
From my personal experience I've sent my Nexus One 2 times and the assistance resend it to me simply reinstalling Froyo 2.2! I've sent the phone another time and, actually, I already have to do it back!
So, my Nexus is away since 2 months, counting all the 3 times!
I hope this time HTC have completely repaired my device. But still waiting for it...
NOTE:
I have an unlocked bootloader too, and you know that there's no way (actually) to re-lock the bootloader.
So the only thing that I do, before send the device to assistance, was to install the original Rom (Froyo or Gingerbread doesn't matter) and the original Recovery!
Obviously you must Wipe ALL (cache, partition, etc), to not encounter some kind of error's.
For the unlocked bootloader question, I don't think HTC void the warranty, because the Nexus One IS a Developer's Phone!!!
So it might be OPEN!
I'll post back later when I have my Nexus back with me.
Sincerely,
Matthew

While it is a developer phone, when you go to unlock the recovery, it does state that it voids your warranty. But I think HTC is decent enough to realize when it is a hardware issue that they are willing to still honor their warranty. I know a lot of people who got their power button repaired with unlocked bootloaders, because HTC knows it is a valid defect. BUT... they are not required to honor the warranty as it is void the minute you unlock your phone.
Where can I find the stock recovery?
I'm afraid this is also going to happen with my nexus, that they send him back, but the problem is still there. I'va read it happens to al lot of people :S
It's not even sure they can reproduce the problem. It's not like the phone is rebooting every 5 minutes...
about the reboots:
I've read a alot about it on the forums. And it seems that lots of android devices have this problem. Does anyone knows what might cause these reboots?
Maybe it has something to do with heat, which damages the motherboard?

Does your warranty center not support the advanced exchange? In the US, you can have them send you a new phone (while holding $520 of yours in reserve)... once you get the new phone, you send the old one back and they release your funds.
If you are that worried about it, I suppose you could just brick your phone yourself by screwing up a radio flash. That will prevent the phone from even booting, but I wouldn't/couldn't ever recommend doing this.
Tomorrow HTC is coming to pick my phone up
Hopefully they can fix the problem.
I've put the 2.3.4 OTA rom on the phone
Thanks for all the advice!

[Q] WiFi not turning on, not working.

After the forced AT&T software update, my WiFi will not turn on. I will go into WiFi settings, press the toggle button, and it will grey out and get stuck on "Turning on WiFi". I have tried wiping both caches, and I have replaced the bcmdcm.ko under system\lib\modules with bcm4330.ko, which was the one from the stock ROM. Nothing has worked and this problem persists. I am rooted and my bootloader is unlocked. Is there anything short of doing a full factory reset that can fix this problem?
Please post in the appropriate section.

Ok I've googled around alot and looked on this forum but I can't find a boot.img anywhere that isn't modified. Can you point me to the stock boot.img?
My mom has a Vivid and her phone has been doing this ever since the update was pushed down by AT&T. Since she lives 1000 miles from me, I didn't root her phone, and leaving it stock, the only thing that ended up working was a factory reset. The other thing that was happening after the update was every boot would go through the "Optimizing application 1 of x..." message like it does after the update. I get the impression that whenever she performed the mandatory AT&T update, something didn't go correctly, which is why her Wi-Fi was permanently stuck in this "Turning on Wi-Fi" state. It seems to be working perfectly now, and we no longer see the "Optimizing..." message either when the phone reboots. Now I won't have to do remote tech support when she flies back home next week

Did you install the kernel? If you're s-on you need to fastboot flash the kernel image.

[Q] moto x1058 wifi problems

Hello, I have searched for a solution and found some that worked, My WIFI on my moto x will not connect to any network.
it just started a few weeks ago, But going to in to recovery mode and wiping the cache was working it would connect again.
Thing is it's not only on my home network if i go to any place with WIFI it shows the network, I try to connect and it disappears.
I had the kitkat update I tried to factory reset that did not work also reflashed to jelly bean to see if that would fix the problem. I did not restore any back ups of my device since it could have been a corrupt setting or file that was messing it up. Still no luck I tried some of the router options found on the web about changing the channels. Just to be clear it will not connect to any WIFI not just the one at my house.
I spoke with Fido tech support and after explaining everything i tried they said i was out of options and since I bought the phone right out, I would have to call Motorola and see if they can fix it, thing is i unlocked the bootloader when I rooted it when i first had it with it's stock jelly bean.
I know this is a on going issue for many other moto x, could it just be a hardware issue now my phone has been in a otter box defender since the day i bought it, it has no damage or ever been dropped in water.
it's frustrating, my data works perfect and every thing else on phone works great. I really like the phone but since the bootloader is unlocked the warranty is now void and I only had the phone since dec 2013.
does any one have any last options I could possibly try thanks in advance.

Hi,
I suggest you do a full SBF restore. Don't confuse this with a factory reset....SBFing can actually repair a corrupted filesystem, while a factory reset does not.
You can find a great guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-moto-x-return-to-100-stock-using-t2446515
There are 2 methods. RSD Lite and manual method. Either will work, but pay very close attention to the instructions.
You will find the SBF file for your particular carrier/version here:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0
Good Luck
P.S. I too was having strange WIFI issues. The SBF back to stock fixed it 100%. Hope it works for you.
no luck

I followed the guide step by step, Still no luck.
shows the wifi connections, saves them and shows that it is connecting and just goes back to saved, or disabled. Sometimes even just disappears took it in to have it looked at and the guys at the fido store had the same issue trying to connect to their network.
They keep saying it is a software issue but i'm starting to think it might be hardware. I even tried some fixes with Root to get access to the persist folder to change a file. Tried booting in safe mode to see if it would connect and just does the same thing, I might just be buying a new device just got one of those unlucky ones thanks again tho.

I would suspect a hardware issue since you have doctored your persist partition, and you have restored the others via SBF. Bummer :/ Maybe someone else will have another suggestion for you.

Working again!
I did not give up and it's working again thanks to samwathegreat, I dont mean to bump my old post but I just want to share with other xt 1058 users that may have been having this issue.
I had mentioned before I used some one else's persist files to try and fix mine and thought it was a hardware problem, Well turns out it was not.
I used the files samwathegreat posted in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54089540&postcount=7
I also made a back up of mine, the files in that folder are for a xt 1060 but corrected my problem now I can connect every where again including my house and any other place that offer WIFI.
I was not able to send it to Motorala since I had unlocked the boot loader and warranty was void. All I could do was wait, I even flashed a tmobile 4.4.3 to see if that would fix it with no luck. Any ways just want to say thanks again samwathegreat!!! :good::good:

[Q] Can't turn wifi or bluetooth on

Hi so i've been searching and re-searching over and over to fin what is going on but i can't find a solution to my problem, turns out that mi wifi (and bluetooth) can't turn on, funny thing is, i have to reset several times in order to make them work but it will last just a few minutes, although i have notice that when i make it work and stay connected on a strong wifi signal sometimes it wont deactivate but not always this is getting frustating, another thing is that when i do a factory reset or install a new rom rather stock or cm or any variation it will work but just for a minutes as well.... any idea what it could cause this and how to fix it??

FIRST OF ALL MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER!! AND YOUR BOOTLOADER SAYS: DEVICES IS UNLOCKED: STATUS CODE 3. IF YOUR BL IS NOT UNLOCKED DONT PROCEED ANY FURTHER, but I think its unlocked since you have flashed a custom rom. Any ways Follow this to solve your problem or get the diagnose for the your problem:
50% it might be a hardware problem or 50% it might be a software problem.... to make sure whether its a software or hardware problem do this:
1: Download the stock firmware of you Moto X.. You can find it specifically for your phone. Stock firmware are available for all models like 1058,1052,1060 etc..
2: Put your phone on Fastboot mode
3: Flash the firmware that you downloaded before through RSD lite, then your phone will be on its factory state properly, all partitions are erased and re-written when you RSD your phone. So any bad driver, kernal etc will be erased
4: Now Check your wifi and bluetooth properly if it does not work again after flashing the stock firmware then im sorry mate it would be a hardware problem obviously because you have already erased and everything and re-written it. If it does work then congratulations :good:
Let me know if it works and dont forget to hit the thanks button if it works.
thanks for the answer dude! i've already had donde that several times, so i guess it's hardware problem :/ u know if it has a solution without warranty?

Yes then its a hardware problem bro... umm if you are without warranty then you can check if you have any local markets in your city which repairs phones.. other then there is no way to solve your problem as in XDA no one has much information about the repairing of phones...
