[Q] HTC One update with root and stock recovery fails - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have htc one (M7) GSM version, unlocked the bootloader, installed twrp recovery and rooted the device (still S-ON)
Now I received a new OTA update, and as usual, i flashed the stock recovery to install the update
However, this time, when trying to install the update, the device reboots, starts installing (with a green triangle) and half way stops and the screen shows a red triangle...
Any idea why does it fail?

can you post your fastboot getvar all please, without imei and serial number
the reason it fails is because a folder called data/preload is missing.

same thing mate, read both links above, find which assert(s) is(are) failing and then replace the missing file(s).

The second link helps finding which assert is failing
In my case, I get "Check /data/preload/SoundHound_Freemium.apk failed, error No such file or directory()"
I have never deleted a system app before... i guess i have to find a way to flash it or something...
Thanks
EDIT: the packaged app "SoundHound" version 6.1.2 is there, and is enabled... I don't understand why the update fails
EDIT2: I can't find the folder /data/preload at all... it seems this folder is deleted after unlocking the bootloader
EDIT3: It looks like we should have backed up these apps before unlocking the bootloader... now I guess we have to extract them from the update package and copy them manually
EDIT4: this is an old post that sums it up in a nice way... yet, without a solution for those who didn't take notice

You did when unlocking the bootloader. Unlocking bootloader wipe /data so it also wipe /data/preload and all files in that folder. You must restore all files for the ota to install.

you have s-off and super cid and most likely custom recovery
you need stock recovery and and the missing files from unlocking the bootloader. This is discussed 100's of times in the forums. Your choice is flash a RUU (loose everything) and take all the OTA updates. Or locate the stock recovery and missing files and restore them then take the OTA update.

Seems their is no RUU for 3.63.708.3 only an OTA that may contain the files you need. >> http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/ota_m7_...-24-708-4_release_339322l8015akovncw94nh-zip/

Your problem here is the modelid (MID) is shown as a EU MID - PN0710000
and the correct MID for xx.x.708.x is PN0714000
Do you have root in your current ROM ?
If yes then you need to change the MID to PN0714000

Nothing ... until you fix the wrong MID
Or make a total change to EU version, then you can start with a EU RUU with lower version and do many OTA to the latest version.

open it in 7zip and extract the firmware.zip to your desktop
this has the stock recovery in it.
then back in 7zip you need the system/priv-app folder
this should contain the missing files from unlocking the bootloader. They could also be in system/app. You'll have to check what errors you get during the update to see what files are failing the check / Missing

Great ... you fixed the main problem.
And the second problem is the recovery, as mentioned before you need a stock recovery
Grab it here : http://d-h.st/7di
You may have another problem ... how to flash this stock recovery.
Since you managed to fix the variant version problem, then I guess you have root in your ROM.
Unlock the bootloader with this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475914
see : to UNLOCK your bootloader, enter the following:
then fastboot flash the stock recovery
try again and see whether you have any error. The only one I can guess is your ROM may not have the preload files ... fix this one later if there is a problem. If no problem then everything should be good.

Modified firmware = variant system version error
You can't update automatically or manually when you have this error
Check that you have CID HTC__044 and MID PN0714000
If no ... read a few post that mentioned before
Also note that "relock bootloader" is not necessary

CID__044 is wrong and HTC_044 also wrong.
The correct one is HTC__044 (notice the double underscore)
To make thing easier why don't change it to SuperCID
fastboot oem writecid 11111111
(there 8 of 1)
I don't advise to manually update OTA, since you insist :
1. Put the OTA.zip on the root of sdcard
2. Boot to hboot and select recovery
3. press power + volume up to enter recovery
4. select install from phone storage
5. select 0 then select the OTA.zip
6. the system will install and it will ask you to reboot to flash firmware
7. reboot and let the system do its task
8. system will reboot and done

[Q] Tempered root and stucked

Hello,
My phone is Htc one m7 unlocked and tempered root, also my hboot is 1.57 and s on and clockwordmod recovery v6.0.4.8
I'm basicly stucked now cause i was planning to turn my phone gpe edition but cause of my hboot i can't be able to s off.
How can i turn back to stock recovery and get off that tempered root thing?
You should be able to return to Stock Software easily enough. Depending on your current os and what files are available for your device.
But to go back to 100% Stock with a ***LOCKED*** bootloader and no ***TAMPERED*** flag requires the device to be s-off.
Can you please post the output of
Code:
fastboot getvar all
. But remove your imei and serial numbers before posting :good:

Ok the fact your on the stock Rom still may help. Unfortunately there's not a lot of files about for your device. What su app do you have some have an option to unroot and uninstall. Then a factory reset with Stock recovery should do the job. Only problem then is missing preload data. This gets wiped when you unlock the bootloader and OTA updates won't work without it.
I'm still looking

I think it's an OTA .zip if I'm right you can download it. Open it on your pc and inside there will be a firmware.zip. extract it and open it. Inside the firmware.zip you'll find the stock recovery you need. You can flash it with fastboot like any custom recovery.

HTC One M7(rooted) trangle with a red exclamation mark

Hi guys,
Yesterday i finally got my lollipop OTA update. As I am rooted I had get back to the stock recovery.
So my CID IS HTC__032 and i found a recovery 3.28.401.6 for the matching CID.
Once the recovery was loaded and I tried to process the update, phone restarted and got stuck showing "entering recovery".
Searching the web i found another recovery matching my CID which started with a 6.XX.XXX.X. I tried loading it and once i tried processing the update the phone didn't boot into recovery anymore but the update screen showed me a triangle with a red exclamation mark.
I would like to fix this issue without doing a factory reset. Any ideas how?
Maybe I used the wrong stock recovery version and this is causing the issue?
Thanks!

A factory reset will not fix that problem anyway. You use have the recovery version matching your firmware version. You also need 100% stock /system partition and /data/preload

Post your fastboot getvar all without imei and serial number so we can locate the correct recovery for you please, you need to base it on your version main really, not so much your cid, or you can pull the one out of the ota and flash that one before trying to update, you'll find the ota in your internal storage / downloads folder, it's just a zip file.
The red triangle thing is stock recovery, sounds like your just using the wrong one.

Good Morning!
Got the issue sorted. I did the following. I went into the setting - software information - Software number.
I noticed that on the stock recovery collection link there was exact the same software number stated as stock recovery. I downloaded it and transferred to the phone. After that the update run smoothly and I have my long awaited Lollipop.
Best regards,
Anton

AT&T M7, Soft Brick, Desperate for help!

I post as a final measure, as after two days of being unable to use my AT&T HTC One M7, I am in need of help. Badly. I have tried everything I could find, it either errors, fails, or crashes, nothing is working for me. I am without an OS, and have an unlocked bootloader, TWRP, and sleep deprivation. This all started when attempting to update to the newest Android available, and has left me stranded with a soft brick. If anyone has any ideas for me, PLEASE speak up. My phone was working fine until yesterday, and I am NOT interested in going back to my Iphone.

What issue the update caused exactly? The phone is stick at the HTC splash screen?
Post the output of "fastboot getvar all" (remove you irmei/sn before posting)
Is you bootloader locked/unlocked?

The phone will freeze at the htc splash, and then reboot into TWRP.
Unlocked
1st install any lollipop recovery, latest would be good
2nd search for latest RUU.ZIP (Lollipop) and install with "htc_fastboot.exe" (google for these 2 terms!, follow the htc_fastboot.exe commands instructions which should be explained on that site of the file)
3rd be happy.

This is the typical problem of updating a lollipop rooted rom. Relock your bootloader and flash the latest at&t ruu, then install all updates (if any) before unlocking and rootimg

Thank you so much! This finally fixed it. I tried flashing the ruu, but I didnt realize my bootloader had to be relocked.

Ive Been Trying Every Damn Guide Out There to Unroot my HTC ONE M7... HELP PLEASE

So ive been trying to unroot my HTC ONE M7 before sending it back to the carrier as im getting it replaced, then will sell that other phone as I already have a new phone with me. Im on Rogers Canada, ive tried the RUU.exe and it just goes on for hours and does nothing.
Ive tried flashing different custom roms to the device, my fastboot and ADB works perfectly its just nothing is working. The last error I got was "FAILED (data transfer failure (Unknown error))" but I get so many errors with every way Ive tried, im beginning to give up.
I was wondering if I can get the same help I got here two years ago, where I was having issues rooting and someone helped me. He was a high rep member and I trusted him with using teamviewer on my comp. Im totally open to skype screensharing or using teamviewer.
Info:
HTC ONE M7 (ROGERS,CANADA)
Rooted w/ cyanogen mod
I have no idea if its S-off or S-on as I did this like 3 years ago
Thanks

Try the 7.17.631.7 RUU from this thread. This ruu is in the ZIP format, not EXE so you'll have to flash it using fastboot. You'll also need to use htc's version of fastboot.exe to flash this ruu as the regular fastboot version you can find from Google (from the android sdk tool) won't work.

When I tried to flash the RUU I get an error saying "Could not allocate [random number] bytes".
Is it because the image is too big to handle?

Are you using htc_fastboot.exe? https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24341993505161791
If so, try command

I erased the cache but the error remains and yes, I used htc fastboot.

If you use the htc_fastboot.exe you need to put it in the adb folder and rename it to fastboot.exe otherwise the commands are not working with it and your pc uses the usual fastboot.exe. For an easier usage you should also rename the ruuxxxx.zip to just ruu.zip. (also make sure you see the file extentions and dint rename it to ruu.zip.zip)
