[Q] HTC Sync backup manager - backup gone? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I backed up my HTC yesterday to HTC Sync Manager thinking it'd be safe. I had it factory reseted today and when i plugged it in to back it up, the HTC sync manager just made a new backup instead! I can't seem to find the backup from yesterday. Was it erased?

Don't know if it was erased but use these steps to try and restore your backup.
* Connect your phone to your computer.
* In HTC Sync Manager, click Home > TRANSFER & BACKUP.
* Under Backup and restore, click Restore.
* Select a backup file to restore from.
* Choose whether to replace existing content on your phone with the content from the backup file.
* Click Restore Now.
* If the backup file has a password, enter the password, and then click OK.
* When you see a message that shows the backup has been restored, click OK.
* On your phone, slide open the Notifications panel, and then tap Home screen restored to apply your personalized Home screen layout to your phone.

Yeah I looked at those steps but there's only one backup file and it's the newest one from today. They should have backups from multiple points in time but I think it's only the most recent one right?

There should have been more than one backup listed. I don't use HTC Backup but I understand you can enable it in Settings and if you have a dropbox account it will automatically send your data to the cloud. This might be a better system than using HTC Sync Mgr for backups. One method that I use is to copy my phone's contents to my computer before I install a new rom, recovery or do a reset which could result in the lost of my data.

Hi Christine, thanks for this helpful information. I am at the stage 4 on how to "Restore your HTC One Backup from Computer using HTC Sync Manager" as explained above, my new phone is similar is the same as the old one .. htc one m9 ...but i had used a password during the backup which I no longer remember and there is no option on how to retrieve it. I'm just wondering if you may be able to help me with the process to follow; any guidance will be helpful please? Thank you.

Backup Contacts

Does Sprite Backup, backup your contacts? I'm not sure of your contacts are stored in the WM6 File system or not anyway. If Sprite Backup doesnt backup your contacts can anyone recommend a way of doing this as I have to many to store on the SIM card so i store them in the phone.
(I did search the forum for this but nothing of use came up)
Here is an easier method with no applications needed.
go to my device and copy the pim file using file explorer and when you do need to get your contacts back, simply copy the pim file back under my device.
If I flash my kaiser rom with a newer one will I lose my contacts, and just need to copy this file back or do my contacts remain untouched?
your contacts will remain the way it was when you copy it.
HUH? So i do need to back them up before I flash the rom or not?

Here is also a good idea. If you have Windows Outlook just sync your phone with that and it will place all of your contacts in outlook. That way when you flash to a ROM of your choice you will always have your contacts saved. That's what I do.

yes, sprite does back-up your contacts if you specify in it's setting.
but for backing up just the contacts (as my fail-safe plan), i have always used a tiny app called PPCBackupContacts v1.6 authored by the great dotfred which can be found in this forum. it had always worked perfectly 100% each time. you can even select delete all contacts from it and restore the whole database again whenever you please to avoid duplicate contacts when restoring.
i hope this works for you too.

to avoid the shared file error. how do u paste back the copy of the pim file? Pim is locked whenever the phone is on and I can't delete it
I like PIM Backup as well. I use it not only to backup my contacts, but also my call history, ringtones, alarms, and various other custom files and folders. That way, when I flash a new ROM or do a hard reset, I just install my software and then use PIM Backup to restore all my customizations. It's great! And it'll do scheduled backups, so I get a nightly backup without even thinking about it.

[Q] Contacts wiped after flashing, help?

Hi guys,
After flashing Slick2x-G, all my contacts are gone. I did a full wipe since it's neccesary, but after turning my phone back on all my phone numbers are gone.
I remember that when I saved a new contact I always chose LG PC Suite in the options. Is there any way to get them from somewhere?
Thanks!

I did a clockworkmod backup and i did a backup with titanium backup, but no idea IF they saved it and if they did, where the files are.
Could you explain me?
The ClockworkMod backup wont help, but look for Contacts in Titanium.
I tried, but in the new rom I'm using right now is no titanium, where can I find the backups?
Should be in /sdcard/TitaniumBackup

You can do another thing.Full Wipe the phone restore the clockworkmod backup.Reboot phone.Open contacts.Press the options "hard key".Select more.then select Import/export.Export to sdcard.Wait for it to finish. It will save all your contacts in the sdcard. Then boot to recovery.Full wipe again.Flash the desired Rom.After that reboot phone.Open contacts...Select import/export from options...Import from sdcard.Select the file.Wait for it to finish. You will have all the contacts.A little long process but the best.
Thanks for the explaination, I'm going to try it tomorrow or so. I guess it will work! Thanks!

If you did a Titanium backup you just have to re-install Titanium and restore your contact app + data. it's what I do for Go contact. If your contacts were set as google contact they should be back automatically with sync.
Edit: doesn't work I looked at my contacts and only the google one are restored. You must use the built-in save feature in your contact app our use a specific backup app.

Yes, at some point I would recommend changing all your contacts from LG to Gmail contacts. Not only is it far easier to sync, it helps prevent issues that arise from apps that also use your contacts list, and it allows you to easily sync contacts onto any future Android phone.
I changed back to my backup since i couldn't get my contacts back. Is there any way to make Google contacts of all or do i have to do it one by one? Thanks!
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
very easily yes
in the contacts application, select menu, select export to SD, then select all contacts and these will be saved as a vcf file on the SD memory
then go back to the contacts application again, select menu, then select import from SD - it will ask where you want to import to, select import to Google contacts and it will be imported and synched to your google account.
After that you can delete all the phone contacts and just leave the google contacts - easiest way to do this is turn off view of google contacts first, it will then only show phone contacts, select all and delete them and finally turn on google contacts view again.
When i select export tot sd, it only exports like 21 of my contacts, which are my whatsapp contacts. Can't find any options to change that?

Google sync does not work properly. If there are no memos on the phone and you try to sync back from google docs then it inserts the notes as pictures within notes. After a couple of such syncs the original note becomes a picture in a picture in a note. Needless to say the loss in resolution makes it impossible to read them.
A friend has the same problem so it is not just me. Does anyone know of a solution? The best would have been a folder that could simply be on the sdcard. I love using the S Memo application and just wish they had given some thought to the storage issue.
Thanks,
damn another unsolved thread!
for me syncing with "evernote" works fine, it also gives me the option to edit notes on the pc and sync it back to my phone, it is quite nice as my secretary shares a folder with me and she can send me in real time notes.
Unlike to Google evernote is really syncing, but this means if you delete a not or Snote then it is going to be deleted on the phone as well.

I have found a method of backing up the drawings / text from S-Memo exactly as they are (as in you are still able to draw and erase on them) but the backup process isn't exactly "easy".
NB: Now I am just going to assume that users who are reading this have never heard of Titanium Backup or are not familiar with the program.
====================
To backup S-Memo data:
1. Go into your app drawer and open the file explorer program My files (or any other file management program you have like Astro or ES etc).
2. Navigate to your external SD storage (/sdcard/External_SD) and create a folder there called Titanium (or any other name you desire). Once that's done you can exit.
3. Then you need to download the app Titanium Backup Free or Pro (Free version from Google Play here), Install.
4. Open Titanium Backup > click your phone's menu button > Preferences.
5. Select Backup folder location. Now, using your phone's back button to (suprise!) go back, navigate to the folder you created in step 1 of this guide (if you followed the guide it will be in /sdcard/External_SD/Titanium. After you are inside the folder you created, select Use the current folder. Now hit your phone's back button.
6. Still in Titanium Backup app, select the Backup / Restore tab from the top.
7. Scroll down and find the S-Memo app (screenshot 1 attached below). Single-tap it, then press the Backup ! button (screenshot 2).
8. Done!
p.s. Just a quick explanation of what we did, essentially we created a folder for Titanium Backup to store its backup files in a place that is not on the internal SD. Therefore if we decide to do a full system wipe which included the internal SD (whether deliberately or accidentally) our backup data would not be wiped with it (I think the default Titanium Backup location is /sdcard/TitaniumBackup i.e. on the internal SD for our phone).
====================
To restore S-Memo data:
1. Install Titanium Backup again (remember we wiped our phones, so the app is gone?).
2. Same process as steps 4 and 5 from above: Open Titanium Backup > phone's menu button > Preferences > Backup folder location > navigate to /sdcard/External_SD/Titanium (or wherever you saved it) > Use the current folder.
3. Now hit your phone's back button > then press the Backup / Restore tab.
4. Find the S-Memo app > select it > press Restore (screenshot 3). When you're done you can exit Titanium Backup.
Now here is where it gets interesting...
5. Open S-Memo... and you may notice the drawings / text you have created have been restored, but have one of the following problems:
- Image missing from the note preview.
- Only part of the image is visible in the note preview.
- The image preview is displaying something random.
This is what has happened: The drawings / text you have created from before have been restored, but the preview of the drawing / text has not been updated on your new system (I have no idea where S-Memo stores that). So if you select the drawing / text, it is an exact copy of the original, but you just can't see it in the S-Memo preview.
6. To get that preview back, do the following:
For drawings: Open the drawing > draw something (like a dot) > then you can erase it during the same drawing session > click Save.
For text: Open the text > type a letter or something > delete it during the same drawing session > click Save.
7. Now the preview of the note should accurately reflect the contents of the note!
====================
I'm not sure if there is another easier method than this, but I have been using this method successfully through multiple wipes (I should really stop messing around with system files ) to restore my S-Memos perfectly. A very long, but (I'm pretty sure!) a garuanteed method to work. If anyone else has another method do let us know.
Enjoy your restored notes

You could try to search on the file system for the folder where the files are stored by the app.
Then use a file restore program to try and undelete the files.
ANd oh yeah, make BACKUPS! then you would not be in this situation (yes it is stating the obvious).
I have some additional info for users who update there Note app to the newer version.
You can use the same procedure as above to restore data + app.
Just rename the Smemo.apk, do a restore of app+data, remove the restored app, rename the newer Snote app to it's normal name and start it.
You will see some conversion, then it works (at least it did for me).
To restore the preview images, back up the /Sd Card/S-memo folder before you flash, then overwrite with your backup afterwards. The thumbnails / Previews are stored as ordinary JPGs.
Now if only I can manage to extract that folder from my nandroid backup... :silly:
why not use Titanium backup pro's cloud sync option - you can password protect all files too.
Even if my phone dropped to the bottom of the sea, i will always have my contacts, cal, apps and selected folders backed up and password protected online.
I have not tried restoring S memo data, but im sure TB pro will restore it fine.

Helium (formerly Carbon) - Backup/Restore

Hi folks,
I've done a fair bit of searching and although it has been briefly discussed before I can't see any recent mentions about Helium (aka Carbon) from clockworkmod (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup&hl=en).
The Google Play store page for the app mentions that the app doesn't work on the Xperia S and Z due to some changes Sony made, however when I first got my Xperia Z (at launch in the UK), I was able to backup app data (and some apks) from my Galaxy S3 and restore them onto the Xperia Z without any issues.
Given there have been a few software updates from Sony since launch, does anyone have any recent experience with Helium, specifically whether it works correctly to backup and restore to the Xperia Z? I couldn't find a suitable thread or forum to try to ask the developer directly what the specific issues were with the Xperia S and Z that led to the warning on the app page.
I had a problem restoring Apps with this app after full factory reset. It always crashed. Tried to restore from SD card and CLOUD. on my galaxy s3 it works fine. The build in sony's backup and restore app is doing great.

Then make backups of them again.. Then they will have those backup up files in the "Carbon" folder. Then copy the folders inside without the "nomedia" file. It then the app will show the backup & viola... Apps restored...

Is there something weird about the way messages are stored in general? Everything else seemed to work - the one thing I can't seem to figure out is how to restore text messages (com.android.providers.telephony.ab) - I've tried to do it as a whole app using the PC interface, tried copying the folder as a replacement via Android File Transfer to the 'carbon' folder, etc.
When I try to restore via helium server, it quickly shows me everything as restored but I don't see the messages. When I try to do it manually (e.g. force copy), I don't see an option under "Restore and Sync" to actually select messaging.
Am I missing something stupid / obvious? The raw data seems to be there (for example, call logs were uploaded just fine, text messages seem to have an issue).

So I came up with a solution based on what works for others. Why this works when it didn't previously is beyond me, but hopefully someone else can use it if individual parts of their Helium backup don't work properly (in theory it should work for any app / SQL dataset). The whole point of Helium is that we're running non-rooted phones and so Titanium Backup or the like aren't applicable. For reference, I'm running an N4 to OSX 10.7.x
1. Use the Helium Server to create a full backup.
2. Wipe phone or whatever you need to do (I had to do a factory reset for Google since it's an N4 and my proximity sensor is dead).
3. Install the apps you had previously via Play Store (pain in the a**).
4. Run Helium server and upload the backup data.
5. Update apps as needed (should be auto but who knows for individual stuff).
6. Check app data in apps. Texts are obviously easy to see for me. Hopefully everything restored nicely for you here.
***Now for the bit for people who got corrupted restores.
7. Unzip the backup file on your computer, select the .ab files that correspond to the missing / corrupted restores and then zip those into a new file on your computer (for step 9). Keep these files handy in unzipped form as well for step 10.
8. Perform a new Helium backup of those sections onto the internal SD card (yes it will be blank, worry not).
9. (Optional step): Run Helium server and upload that new zip file (with the stuff that didn't make it) alone. Try restore. Unlikely to work but worth a shot.
10. Running Android File Transfer, find the SD card, find the folder 'carbon' and then find the corresponding sub-folders that have the modules that were corrupted. Replace the SD card backups of the broken modules with the good ones from your computer.
11. Run Helium restore again, but only for the sections you want (I swear, for me Messaging didn't show up the first few times but after step 10 it did).
12. Wait, hoepfully it works well. I would reboot after running the restore to a) kill Helium and b) confirm functionality.
FWIW, my telephony.ab was 1.8MB and took SIX hours to restore. Seriously. Yeah yeah, that's a lot of texts but six hours? I've since added "SMS Backup & Restore" to my phone and will probably just use that, map out my phone layout and functionality and just manually replace apps from now on since most data is in the cloud. You lose some stuff, but prima facie it's boat tons easier.
Hopefully that helps someone else who had the same issues.

Somehow my phone got soft factory reset (lost all the apps but the files) when i tried to install the apps that I had before it throws a play store error while installing saying it couldnt be installed because of an unkown error "-24" plz helpp
Why are you mocking Koush? Yes the Koush. He made this app. He specifically said in the app description that:
Note: Helium is NOT available to Motorola devices. This is because Motorola phones have a bug that break Android's backup mechanism. Until this is fixed by Motorola, Helium will not work on those Androids. You can download Helium manually here:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/apks/Backup.apk
If you find that Helium *does* work on your Motorola Android, please notify me.
Note: Some Sony devices have issues with Helium. This includes the Xperia S and Xperia Z. Sony has *disabled* backup on these devices completely.

When you select the restore option you have a chance to uncheck any Apps you don't want so it doesn't hurt to look through the list to make sure you only install want you want.
You can also go to the Backup/Restore menu and restore Wi-Fi Access Points. It saves you from having to reenter Wi-Fi passwords.
EDIT: If your launcher lets you save and restore your screen layout then copy that folder from your sdcard as well. I use Atom launcher and that worked fine except that it doesn't restore widgets, but that seems to be true of most launchers I've tested.
